<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The following blog post was written with the assistance of AI</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On this day, we went back to road tripping across the Netherlands, seeing Delft, Rotterdam, and Kinderdijk.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA/photo/AF1QipOiIx8lsK_h8ZTbWY2QdDHWsbUC4CN6v4NY9pLO?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMfSjQwtqe3OoI68CslcChrhdW1Hvq9fcVkVEH7Xl-bv1vCEPBE0v2isf0Y-r1UgMw12YZ5boAKuEPY_VjFm4pAzRhU7gm1BumPD1Bnrg8bHw4FtlIvhw2xl7EenAKGcJ3LnvpLgvXLVeRNUCzx1CpVWQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We spent our time walking around the town square, where the city hall was located. The city hall is an example of the Dutch Renaissance architectural style, characterized by a symmetrical facade, ornate gables, and intricate detailing that reflects the artistic and cultural influences of the time. The facade showcases red brickwork, sandstone embellishments, and elegant windows. The central tower rises proudly, featuring a clock and a carillon, adding to the building&#8217;s visuals.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA/photo/AF1QipMfTvTRjUsiyzEb3TR18-hqkw0e6Miuuk2fN0Zf?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczO_s9tZa6AhZ5p41OqyQfdP2W1g9voLhrBTCypCoOb1VMxfHW220lGJ92S4STadSMDCBT5enKA347dvxPdjXL7bo9FgKkL-in79FEuGEl05XsRWv8WzUDqaJWJDJebULibd2KkGOqv0LfSTi_fzSJd1Kg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In front of the city hall, there was a outdoor exhibition by <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ecorunner.nl/" target="_blank">students from the Delft University of Technology</a>, whose goal was &#8220;promoting a sustainable future by building the world&#8217;s most efficient hydrogen powwered city car&#8221;. It really reminded me of something similar <a href="https://www.supermileage.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">students from UBC</a> had been doing back in the day when I was at UBC, except it was a gasoline car (renewables were not that big at that time).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA/photo/AF1QipOt6hOSYwKACuATdCGIgOJDMiBY6nwAcOLlKXVQ?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczM-Rf8TCeC9s7YAL7zq7TE31T3_3yjs_7hwBbzcMM_IR3Aecif4U5s84cHzjDbQ2g0Lrr56Mt6qJEPOlpint7DgiASEOIU-0pidvvjJn-xKumufaCi7rm4a7z_hPomd1EkZxy6jqaQtf_uuKSae9Sf9og=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other side of the square is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), renowned for its impressive Gothic design, rich history, and its role as the final resting place of members of the Dutch and Prussian royal family. Other notable people, such as Johannes Vermeer, also found their final resting place in Delft. This is something I missed out on &#8211; I only realized this after I had left.</p>

Countless stalls and vendors showcase a kaleidoscope of fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, aromatic spices, succulent meats, and an array of international cuisine. We ate a variety of things like a duck confit burger, satay skewers, stroopwaffles, samosas, and pickled herring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We walked over to the nearby old harbour from the markethall, a historic waterfront area dating back to the 14th century and was once a bustling hub of maritime activity. It&#8217;s also the home of heritage bulidings like the Witte Huis, known as the first high-rise buildin gin Europe. Today, the area has been transformed into a picturesque urban space adorned with vibrant terraces, cafes, and boutiques. It&#8217;s a huge contrast to the Cube Houses next door that are a set of residences shaped like cubes tilted at a 45-degree angle.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPYXyei0ds2FbeCvWBWs97n7eYnROZTjhScBbJrgRJKLnJedw1ziiyCGBn2tWi94g/photo/AF1QipPw1Mq68Pkmz-mavgb9c2OKw23i-yLO0IWcWgSu?key=UWdQYjMtYnVhLWVzN1hxVDYzTy1XZm44Z1hNd1FR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMi2sOWHctlFOf7rSRrdmyQpLGa7XxCVgdWESRuPiVQa-32-4t5OOvJ4O2octMta_AMAAMigmOvUEp5CsMwIEcd0d5Nqm_vjy7pjwBrIzulW5baDEUcy9WnAFZBIKf2mS3lT19yAsr2S6FdUcVm4sTq1g=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our final destination of the day to the town of Kinderdijk, we saw a different set of windmills from what we saw <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2023/08/01/windmills-canals-and-cheese-a-journey-through-edam-marken-volendam-and-zaanse-schans/" target="_blank">a few days back</a>. Netherlands&#8217; windmills are a testament to the centuries-long battle against the sea. The majority of the Netherlands is situated below sea level, making it vulnerable to flooding from rivers, and the sea. Windmills played a crucial role in pumping water out of low-lying areas and draining marshes to reclaim land for agriculture and habitation. Both Kinderdijk and Zaanse Schans are popular destinations to see Dutch windmills, but Kinderdijk seemed to have a more serene and rural atmosphere, surrounded by quiet waterways and fields, while Zaanse Schans is more accessible since it&#8217;s close to Amsterdam, where most international travelers fly into.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s more of <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Delft</a>, <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOy9XOeo-Em9rLaLUASVE0N1vgkKDFxRJtq_hRJSYULDD-iogxBFiADFH_vyyZABw?key=RkhfMUprZW1WTTdtWnl0ejNZeWgxbHpCeDRRWFNn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rotterdam</a><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPQ1NBGWDpMDfysk0ObWSKPOJkHdW6-9gzJg6Ec_Ac1boIJ-ARJrWHgqln_KbXvdQ?key=Q2d3bWdCNnIwNkNDUGNBLXhWN2pOa3oxbHUzU3Bn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">,</a> and <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPYXyei0ds2FbeCvWBWs97n7eYnROZTjhScBbJrgRJKLnJedw1ziiyCGBn2tWi94g?key=UWdQYjMtYnVhLWVzN1hxVDYzTy1XZm44Z1hNd1FR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kinderdijk</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The following blog post was written with the assistance of AI</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The easiest flight path to the Netherlands from North America often lands in Amsterdam. So naturally, this is where we landed to. Having already been to Amsterdam before, we didn&#8217;t stay very long and mainly spent our time at the Rijksmuseum. Ideally, we would have liked to visit the Van Gogh Museum, but the tickets were sold out when we tried to go.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w/photo/AF1QipO-Ko5JyCfwuG1mboSTpRAimn3mEkmkYvtw5K76?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AIL4fc96RguyIELG62j-rl_pdO4BXtkyt7Igm4-P50X1s4fm0oZFDWvFP_ztdn7cvotDSoyWDnYvbMRrDiI_1JL0HmYq8YxmU2L2AL0oIeAK8YRMU478siYoOmIEBe0EK5lDRcJeeBVFKk5a-EEq9o-6uo0bJQ=w1633-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rijksmuseum itself doesn&#8217;t have too many works from Van Gogh, but we did manage to see one of his many self portraits. Van Gogh is famous for his exceptional artistic talent, unique style characterized by bold colors and expressive brushwork, and the profound emotional depth he infused into his artworks. His tragic life story, including struggles with mental health, further adds to the fascination and enduring legacy of one of history&#8217;s most celebrated artists.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w/photo/AF1QipMUNGh3jIwqpBDViJH1C_GILL5SvL9NBfgvYTCR?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AIL4fc_Br6OUbc729rH1G4NV2AnSaJ90GM9baHL7IdPNiUuE4X3N0sGCjIVGls3uAV8ocm-av5d4f-wOq6dtVsYsfE6iaz9yeFeO6hUY327EcmAkJWCt5jqG_oYD_Zh-uwXz0NSzxGuwWgPXnssO3Zxmr5v1NQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also got to see some paintings from Rembrandt, who had the biggest presence of all the other artists in the museum, with an entire hall full of his paintings. Rembrandt is famous for his extraordinary mastery of light and shadow, and ability to capture the depth of human emotion in his paintings. His unrivaled skill in portraiture and storytelling through art has solidified him as one of the greatest painters in history. Rembrandt&#8217;s artistic legacy continues to inspire and influence artists and art enthusiasts worldwide.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w/photo/AF1QipPhqoKeX_6m57dVJ4RYiWEIjoMeUmet8pIfBbIy?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AIL4fc8bO4CPw32MFWAhm6DbdSpuvaFiAbOtn7UPD6fgbFvWf_qmLgDBpBZbrzONGZusoZ7DP1LUYETzHesztKqYKPmGgwgPvKWT5YoqArlqESCe8ugrQ-ERdhMe-1KRdAvrWzVGc9MMsejOHpztYtzXkFeJaQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also featured there is the Cuypers Library, a historical space filled with over 35,000 books and periodicals related to the arts and history. Designed by the architect Pierre Cuypers, the library&#8217;s grand and ornate interior features intricate woodwork and stained glass windows. It serves as a significant resource for researchers, art historians, and anyone interested in exploring the museum&#8217;s extensive collection and Dutch cultural heritage.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w/photo/AF1QipPy-na0JVS1xGgRbXmtScwTjIfGpScu_0EEw0K9?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AIL4fc80Rf6sLNnqJSLHGSE2g8l9X4eGht2kHqAlK3pl8P6V8rHWHgY3X8nm4rBS2MiJO6eDLZ_29-5h4ioRk1KPs3ytxwqsr7up5-F0sDodjOB7W1j1-kZDMrqp0ivaEFKXieoL5rBnj_xqfWK2bBp0d7LQ-w=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Naturally, since Amsterdam is a coastal city, we found a nice spot for a seafood feast with shrimp, squid, salmon, crayfish, prawns, etc. We avoided stuff like raw oysters after our experience in <a href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2023/02/12/lisbon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portugal</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w/photo/AF1QipM87x1z3o5MjNNTS4YWGqlGHZCXcepLI-_8LDl5?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AIL4fc_b-okc6hm3TdQvC2BBkqMJBNJ4cb_M_xO4ykQygpNjBPYU8HmugzXxsSv6yoIdOr-A_0gru5sIKlgHmU1TzzYQeI6mc76YDWDOPQFvtWBhL4kiCBboD7vcv57Omn4CyrqVwrvFKYpLrp8TXlYOaRktfg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What I noticed this time as opposed to the other times, was the abundance of flowers in the streets. It&#8217;s really cool that the rose bushes can climb up vertically against buildings. This kind of beautification is really lacking in most major North American cities.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w/photo/AF1QipOfEVNckkXcnddqJn1Ptc-hvO83SUoXTMbflVNV?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AIL4fc-NuPBI4zCL3qHOC5Ygn-ZrV_SlJKyJ2FFBJ0AiMY0lNOCFqHgYBjg-9GkUt2mANQmh1_wrD-rcb5_pL6Z0-R1nK-jpBGHGH3ne1x9X0tYi9d8hlceiyG7MQc4WW8mclFvkpGGxFcI8EhdvRsnmWlPGfw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A peculiar thing I noticed were these parking spots reserved for Polestar cars only. Not just any electric cars, but specifically from Polestar &#8211; a brand that most people haven&#8217;t even heard of.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, we had a short but eventful time in Amsterdam, revolving around our visit to the Rijksmuseum, enjoying the food there, and walking around its charming streets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">See more of Amsterdam <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPEDZUoBtT95GyFQZr0nFAhit9izxGE2DCKJ978rgEoFd802PQx3kuyiZWmR8PG9w?key=WnEtUkRQcFhETU9DMnpkVi00cEloVDR5V2hKTU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Arnhem</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now we&#8217;re back in the Netherlands, in the city of Arnhem. During Operation Market Garden in World War II, the western Allies attempted invading Germany through the Netherlands. Allied soldiers (mostly British) attempted to secure key bridges throughout the country; one of which was in Arnhem. The operation ended in disaster, and the Allies failed to advance in to Germany.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNqpVCGg1nJDCMQzlwqPM0GsYtFNPYW8v8Anfhnv9uGUrcYAQC-jZ-d13WVGo3orQ/photo/AF1QipNi8CHWjflxQKwZtzMWWk-FcVbtgeGdmfKkh6fS?key=a2lKbGFmRkx1aGdIODBKTXNTSEhCS1VNb1BSb2t3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/g9ZMPnadUpBQpxmGhKRQsItbCBiuqWzQizxnJYAFTWwT5nVQfmHlMW7gHowwa0MnWWcrPB62pic9oRXaeT15N2b8ei728k78U9lkuImHynxiqiqsSDLBGW8-b8jF7tRTDRu1HLpvrfJCTd6ifE2PwddrzKvPR_i76BZVHDB6pgtEf_Q2GIAkwY0sQjVCIMfGOME3x4cf3POjTpV-KA7jzz-0UVL-RpaTVOHkdNPklDXzAUsXvirxLoNbg05dfCsa6j4g0qijTJK9-zYdlC3wELhJLOB2c1YLmeVuS7TiPdsJ5dnGZ29c817_rv63FlQQ3Bpq3ysJ11TkCVMsk6nYRAP23GZ_joTXK-sqtwffG0HfvcCdPduCazicFgi4XLCHYBiPjPOoA6pqWl_kMlPPNXjPdyNJNJkXdj-_dYl2MCQRAMBmtSIHTAbD_rjs8f_h3j4Iae40U9mciFNs3SdJlZT-M23lNciXDSf4NddX-bnYEKuWEUh_o9gQ-DAhyuWayxuyOrNq0Og8rr4ciwrXszs-ct4xflFlrYkeGSLxk7YVYI0LWOf8qtGpGVhk4tpAKwQ-fkgDLVmdyIjNtxRca0KJNFmpfzfmnpF0tx86mucg9fHNsx4rVFRvHKcDQR4iMoM0qO3bYYt6P5pK282iZZ8Yyqp1eE2o1jXPaXl3kx7afj4KbC-qAlbZSyqAQVaQfYw9UJ_IezH2RQzefop6cczDNP6tjRMOeG6KYSkYHQCT7vOhHKNotxdw=w1680-h945-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The John Frost bridge was constructed on the same location as the old bridge that was destroyed by bombings after Operation Market Garden. John Frost was the leader of the group of British paratroopers that actually arrived at the bridge during the battle. The Airborne Museum in Arnhem is dedicated to the Battle of Arnhem, but it was closed for renovations (out of all the war related museums we went to on this trip so far, most of them ended up being closed&#8230;). The city centre itself has the same vibes as other cities in the Netherlands. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am convinced that the best way to explore Europe is by car. Having a car allows you to stay on a schedule that YOU define, you aren&#8217;t bound by any plane or train schedules, and you can go to the places less travelled &#8211; it&#8217;s the ultimate flexibility. Our journey starts in the Netherlands and will go through six more countries in the span of a week &#8211; something very difficult to without a car. Our first day takes us to The Hague, Rotterdam, Baarle-Hertog, and Antwerp.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1460" height="821" src="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?fit=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4885" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?w=1460&amp;ssl=1 1460w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=171%2C96&amp;ssl=1 171w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hague (Den Haag)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first stop is The Hague in the Netherlands. It&#8217;s the home of the International Court of Justice (pictured above). This is the international court that resolves international disputes that the UN is involved in. It was involved in well known cases such as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to judge the perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to judge the perpetrators of crimes committed during the internal struggles in Yugoslavia that eventually led to its dissolution.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For lunch, we searched around for something to eat and we could try some herring since that&#8217;s a popular dish in the Netherlands. We found a street food stall near us not far from where we were and proceeded to go inside and order. One problem though&#8230; the entire menu was in Dutch and there was no English to be found anywhere. We stood there looking confused for a moment, before I piped up and simply asked the staff (knowing that the Netherlands has a very high degree of English literacy) what we should order. He simply replied, &#8220;herring sandwich!&#8221;. It&#8217;s raw herring preserved in a brine in a sandwich along with condiments such as raw onions and pickles. It&#8217;s got a nice fishy freshness to it (like sashimi), but a saltier and more sour flavour because of the brine. This is going to be one of those foods that I&#8217;ll crave once I leave and can&#8217;t get anywhere else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another cool place to visit in The Hague is the Madurodam &#8211; it&#8217;s a park built purely on minatures. Imagine famous landmarks in the Netherlands, like the canals of Amsterdam, old town city squares, and palaces, but in miniature form! As a fan of Lego, I can definitely appreciate looking at miniatures!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, we drove to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and stopped by the Market Hall for more food (I&#8217;m always down to eat). This time, we had yet another Dutch speciality: the stroopwafel. It&#8217;s hard to say no to two thin crispy wafers with gooey caramel in between.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After leaving Rotterdam, we headed towards Belgium &#8211; well kind of. The cool thing about Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau is that a border between Belgium and the Netherlands cuts right through the town in seemingly random spots. You could just be walking down the street along the main avenue of the town and randomly end up in the Netherlands, then in Belgium, and then back again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On our way out of the town, we noticed lane lines that we hadn&#8217;t seen before in North America. At first, we didn&#8217;t know why the lines were painted like that, but upon closer analysis, the road is simply a road shared by both cars and bicycles and the red section shows where the bikes should be, and the grey area is the section where cars should be when passing a bicycle. By allocating a space for the car to pass, the cars don&#8217;t get too close to the cyclists, thus reducing the risk of an accident. How cool!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Going to try posting in German and see how that is like! &nbsp;I welcome any grammar corrections!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/AmsterdamII#5897884267931737378" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PZyuH2XU84E/Udl-fkxvnSI/AAAAAAAASnE/w-lzlzVsejc/s1280/IMG_9604.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/AmsterdamII#5897884280386433714" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RO_HICimIFI/Udl-gTLLMrI/AAAAAAAASnU/BwNIvdrze5E/s1280/IMG_9605.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/AmsterdamII#5897884298727000546" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3F35DYjW9mY/Udl-hXf6CeI/AAAAAAAAP4w/plKENVcpGAI/s912/IMG_9606.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wir fuhren auch mit dem Boot auf die Amstel und hatten die Kanäle gesehen. Viele Leute wohnen anscheinend in Häuser auf dem Fluss!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/AmsterdamII#5897610075377185490" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh5.googleusercontent.com/-QF1-Tw5Ipl0/UdiFHd6fMtI/AAAAAAAASoU/pKlMCDQ7zq8/s1280/IMG_9626.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/AmsterdamII#5897610469437530370" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l-Ep6x4aNv8/UdiFeZ5y4QI/AAAAAAAASok/c7U9fUKhdLU/s1280/IMG_9635.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 194</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As one of the largest port cities in Europe, we got a chance to go to Hamburg to see its beauty.&nbsp; We went there by car and saw much of the historical part of the city as well as took a ferry ride along the coast of the Elbe River and walked along the city&#8217;s canals.&nbsp; The weather was pretty much raining for the whole time we were there.&nbsp; As my friend put it, “when you go to Hamburg, plan for rain”.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Drive</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We left work at around noon to pick up our rental car.&nbsp; It took us a bit longer than we expected because we had to go grocery shopping so we could have lunch and dinner in the car on the way there for our 6 hour drive (or so we thought).&nbsp; The drive ended up taking 8 hours because of a stau (traffic jam).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The car we got from the rental company was a Mercedes-Benz C220.&nbsp; When we got into the car, it smelled like new and being in such a new car for a road trip was undoubtedly awesome. We only got this car because it was the cheapest car with automatic transmission available.&nbsp; I guess the Renault that we got last time was booked for today.&nbsp; I wish that I got the chance to drive it though.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipNhW7CcjkDf3f89MS3XvQRjccUZ9vFmw1Gk25qz?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEW458IXCrRssxPBPhTpP0F3UCTB82i5HDmvqF6Wgx-852cBm0kRstTaUk3KqGaedFiWMOEnJtiZzujevitEyK0jnpMjoPcKESn4atZSjKhykmg64FPw19nGDOXHcSBpppUt8ejUFZfEJEGb7xDQZac3Ow=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the way there, we got to see a lot of the German countryside (as anyone typically does when going from one major city to another).&nbsp; On the grass plains and knolls, we saw countless villages, farms, vineyards, and the like.&nbsp; We even saw farms of wind turbines and solar panels.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipMoQKXezs-x6O265bbo11OEx9vtSsc8q8FR5axk?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWh_2DmTX4FUuhwN-0tKWk3SG5HOmz4IrhVBXObaxaCv7X08D79IwMptpMK2jgLuFdXK1WBoLROiEg7CwvcIFf2loPMycsMyqtjJwJa_MWlCDJtXz6CKVTDkwgGnwxS4QxT_0EbEqrX1I1bH88qBqLmag=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a few hours of driving, we stopped a few times.&nbsp; We stopped at a rest area and at this middle-of-nowhere village.&nbsp; The GPS guided us off the highway and into this village just to avoid the traffic jam.&nbsp; For the first third of the trip, I sat in the front while three of my friends had to squish together in the back.&nbsp; When it was my turn to sit in the back, I didn’t really feel the discomfort while I was reading on my friend’s Kindle.&nbsp; I ended up going through about 90 pages of Band of Brothers.&nbsp; Maybe the book was so interesting that I just completely zoned out of the real world for a little bit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We reached our hostel at around 9 at night and parked the car.&nbsp; After moving our stuff into our room, we began our sightseeing tour of Hamburg.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Reeperbahn</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our first destination was the Reeperbahn street.&nbsp; Similar to Amsterdam, this area is one of the most famous red light districts in the world.&nbsp; The whole area was full of sex shops, strip clubs, and brothels.&nbsp; On the street corner, many women wearing fanny packs kept trying to approach tourists and we figured that these women were all prostitutes (that stuff is legal in Germany).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipMQEKMXVN3UjhPW-6FkyQJk5Mez_d1ADxzzse-S?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXJDsILo0hW35nC8vl7eMw7jdrZdAYMetQIEY4gvpX_5EMKixvN6ftIPacEaLZ0B2RqNS2YgYBL9HFoEbthXs5S0KWBAO4Nh8CrS3NbJCwbJqQSIMBc3eZUnhdftB9btijNCGJSMxmvVnvQbm0n9Z85xQ=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipON6rjFLP5Y9dToGP0M489njZknqLUhs5M_IQrr?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVI_QP0VCz1jhGBROP22Rrz-vPRqc6N65pxhHkQRpGQD14Lo0oF9Bypm6ytys4Wz8ICF8Ykr4bCTrGfWPj92SBdW0naugolw9Rij067DWTyVsvKlfPkC68gL3JNfN1DscBgv6CS4EBFeRlK1taSpxBFkw=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the more peculiar things was that there was a church that stood pretty much in the core of the whole area.&nbsp; Really convenient for people to go to confess their sins I guess.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We meant to find a bar here for a drink, but pretty much all of the places reeked with pungent cigarette smoke or was way too loud.&nbsp; Two of my biggest pet peeves in one place.&nbsp; We ended up just going back to the hostel instead.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipN9dSLTd-1coBT0YRR4GzQSqGUzd-vqkH_l2h7c?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUuNFYsSbOsE2I-rMDFnXJFbjP2PBva3SrkL6COhWKaIZ_biCTbx45O4SdBBvk_hxWgl3dmHR8Vtgu6ESdIsUjMfNSSruSdWNVUb1xfDetINax01VLRMJ8oIf0AR-iWT3nnT_XElSHSD7V6Mc0U3H4m_w=w690-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In order to keep up my “try-as-much-kinds-of-beer-as-possible mentality”, I tried a type of beer called Astra Urtyp.&nbsp; It tasted horrible – too much of hops flavour.&nbsp; Some of the others drank a few more beers and got tequila shots before heading out again.&nbsp; As usual, I went to sleep.&nbsp; The next morning, I found that they returned at around 5:30 in the morning.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Rathaus</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At around 11, on a cloudy day with a large and persistent ocean breeze (it was super cold even with my jacket on), we showed up at the meeting point for the walking tour – a Starbucks.&nbsp; This tour company receives some sort of sponsorship from them.&nbsp; Our tour guide, didn’t look like a German, and when he spoke, a clear Northern USA accent came about – apparently, he had been living in Germany for some time.&nbsp; He led us to the first destination of the tour – the Rathaus (city hall).</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipPMJW5EWyV8Nc8PVIdAwQcWBE3RNU9HpX86uZRX?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWnDOJjtb8GfmVSEzaTkBOzZ98B-HPe922LwvmG9oL01RcKSiGJKdGJlsNJZ2WZ06UYdGpSfTrcci8yDxPDXXERk8VlgsRbyboktyX18mgLLKy7d6nR1X2_2YjUyYspjsq4vUmy0RiOyAJMSbmg9Pt3Og=w690-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Located by the Alster River, this rathaus replaced the old one that was destroyed in the fire of 1842.&nbsp; This building looked quite similar in form to other city halls, like the one in Munich and Vienna, with a clock tower-like structure that extended directly above the main entrance.&nbsp; Right above the gate of the main entrance, the Hamburgers proudly displayed their coat of arms that depicted the old fortress of Hammaburg (where the city got its name) that used to exist in the area before its destruction by the Vikings.&nbsp; Once more this coat of arms was displayed on the clock tower of the rathaus, just beneath a large antiquated mechanical clock.&nbsp; Statues of German Kaisers decorated the side of the building as each one stood in a line just beneath the rooftop.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later on, we went back to the old part of Hamburg for traditional Hamburg cuisine.&nbsp; We entered a restaurant that had a theme of sailing.&nbsp; The wall had on display some schematics and black and white photos of various types of ships.&nbsp; The color scheme of the place even coincided with the stereotypical blue and white colour combination of sailors. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before I started driving though, we stopped at a rest area.&nbsp; When we took a good look at the back seat of the car and noticed a giant mess of crumbs from all our snacking during the trip.&nbsp; I don’t think I had any to do with that since I never considered myself to be a messy eater.&nbsp; Just as we finished commenting about the messiness of the car, one of my friends had apparently stepped on dog poop and got it in the car.&nbsp; It smelled horrible.&nbsp; He even got it onto another friend’s pants.&nbsp; He cleaned it up right away, but a faint smell of the poop lingered in the car for the rest of the journey.&nbsp; It’s a shame that the car rental company gave us a car smelling like new just so we’d give it back with a bad smell.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In another rest area near Frankfurt, we stopped for a bite to eat and went up to the observation tower there to look at the Frankfurt skyline.  That was a nice sight except for the giant high voltage line that blocked part of the view.  By then we were already pretty much 3/4 of the way home.  I continued reading Band of Brothers on the Kindle and managed to get through about 65% of the book in total.  We got back into Stuttgart at around 7:30 in the evening, returned the car, and went home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 161</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After my <a href="https://henrypoon.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/my-horrible-experience-in-brussels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">unfortunate disaster</a> in Brussels, my friend and I took the first train out of the city.&nbsp; When we arrived in Amsterdam, I immediately felt a huge tourist vibe in the city.&nbsp; Unlike Brussels, the tourist population here was much larger.&nbsp; It also felt safer.&nbsp; By the way this post might have some “mature themes” because of the Red Light District stuff.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Coffee Shops and Other Strange Places</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During our walk to the hostel from the train station, we began see some pretty strange yet touristy places.&nbsp; For example, along the way, there was a Vodka Museum and a Torture Museum (they’d actually present different pre-modern torture devices), and of course a lot of “coffee shops”.&nbsp; For those who don’t know what a coffee shop in Amsterdam is, it is where people go to legally smoke weed.&nbsp; A place for people to drink coffee is simply called a cafe.&nbsp; Many people go to Amsterdam for that reason, but not me though.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipM-J8jOBVZZDobL8jO0r7SkgEv1IvfidBCCCPi5?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWFfLYn8WXCLXIC9fltM4Kc-jkIP0O0mp3hirtnWCkCSGzYZA-6ZCJHOu0sr-ycILcgumakXhieHcH6lrTaE9uAoQ-e1m7dB_Q7bvh7IDT3mV9UlTBjYlDC06xmGdfI4fUdp7heir3TTjSitTBoyiWm-A=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipMchETHbzMSM4VFjdZF02VbnPJiNWFoLx60cYQO?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXUWkoJy5xyQ4JuXYEI4dLvmJFbPSdNlhzFYTqAPHhHSA7KEq7JJGd51QBSyQzuzA_hJwOJ9dxegAg_SRR342PMFA81aBm6FxqT_Cr5XNMjj3eg2PI9w6hUGxIsFu5ZAif_KfvMRidfxuq8Aq1aZShA7w=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It wasn’t just the Vodka Museum that was weird, they even had stores selling cannabis seeds, which I guess is okay because weed is legal, but coming from a place where it isn’t, it definitely struck me as weird.&nbsp; To take that even further, there is even a Cannabis Museum.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipPPUOVzQKCfUJEgf5SM-bvoYHoTdVwv24R3mSKZ?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXrulLI9ZDzVnVEqwhVT1Suacu_e50fsd7omEWlHA5ONqHJvmBegcpNM_R1UQu9k0bcz4Y2VEStPdeYPx1REaqsqH7M3ScqAtkM3nr-UuGb0RfX6tyJpkkPNU5TfAx9KbzMlsooZrHEeVE13TKt3PJHRw=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After walking through the town square for a little bit, we arrived at Dam Square, the historic center of Amsterdam.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Dam Square</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the historic center, this area has a lot of notable buildings such as the Royal Palace, New Church, National Monument, and Madame Tussaud’s Museum.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> <br> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where I noticed the ridiculous amount of bicycles.&nbsp; In fact, I saw more people riding bicycles than people driving cars.&nbsp; When I crossed the street, I looked for bikers and not drivers.&nbsp; Making our way further into the city, we began to see the large network of canals.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Canals</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another thing that Amsterdam is famous for is its canals.&nbsp; Built in the early 17th century, city planners had the idea of constructing this network for the purposes of defense and water management.&nbsp; Today, people dub it as “The Venice of the North” and it is quite a cultural landmark.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipNPKJNNkji9_XHqytMBH9z89Efc0kX-dOuRbELZ?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUH0gHX03-cLUydNAQcis7xJYoGDlw560VpyCcJsy0Y_M0te0sRi-aZJRzsvih7E3jnNS4-obuEWKNmsCBKs-zR23E4ay5a6t6Q-kg44c1HVpB0EV8ANbN95tI4vvyVnG38njy_fZdXpJVEEPfC9z33HA=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The canal receives its water from the Amstel River (there is a <a href="https://henrypoon.wordpress.com/2011/04/27/the-beer-post/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">beer</a> named after it).&nbsp; According to Wikipedia, because of the canals, there are about 90 islands and 1500 bridges.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Nieuwmarkt</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While walking to the hostel, we reached the New Market, which is another city square.&nbsp; In the center there is a city gate that has been long converted into a cafe/restaurant.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipNnucs5kbKJIXyGnmUidagur9Q6IV6Nv4NyYzpm?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEW3eG3OXJSnjzSF1qTLWXtbG8ozVgxtgpiikFnrJLl8OknhwueKAzIxQf6aurmI9OVAUERekP-PZLYw2uFV2wgwhWhlLqCWCLCS1EaWHdRV8MpVgHXIsj-RLYg_oqPQIzyNguWhbRwzRAIvDBxoWyIcag=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turns out our hostel was less than 100 meters from here.&nbsp; We went there and dropped off our stuff before we continued exploring.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Christian Hostel</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we left, Germany, my friend booked a place for us at this Christian hostel.&nbsp; I’m not even Christian, but that didn’t matter.&nbsp; It had a lot of rules like no smoking, no alcohol, no weed, etc, which was okay.&nbsp; The ironic thing was that when I walked into my room (this was at around 2 PM in the afternoon), I saw a few people passed out on their beds.&nbsp; I thought to myself, “they probably just drank too much beer or smoked too much weed.”&nbsp; The hostel didn’t really care, so long as they didn’t bring that stuff in.&nbsp; They even had a “bible study”.&nbsp; I really wonder who would go to that.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Chinatown</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next to the New Market Square was Amsterdam’s Chinatown.&nbsp; My first impression of this place was that the Chinese stuff here was really traditional unlike the multitude of westernized Chinese food places I always see in Germany (not a big fan of chicken chow mein or kung pao chicken).&nbsp; This place even had a temple with Buddha and various people from Chinese folk religions like Guan Yu.&nbsp; The butcher’s shop even sold entire slabs of an entire pig (like the ones that some Chinese people use for celebrations).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipMxlDlPZG4koqhDzWUpVKsysRHy1KZ5ccb7kbWq?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEU7knDQPYwXZili6bOZvo4q5p3WcEdW4MPvesxVoNPyfWMU7vmX8eNYulOWul09pXXuIUqLLnTRhCF9VwZ60_gQu1UMedejodDhwV398prr6_fpfuGKVewCecUX6hhJ65ogPJRYfwPGW1q1G6F-l8DO-Q=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After walking through Chinatown, we proceeded to our next destination: the infamous Red Light District.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Red Light District</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before going to Amsterdam, I already knew that the Netherlands legalized weed and prostitution and so I figured that these things would be really prevalent in the city.&nbsp; Indeed they were.&nbsp; Walking down the street, I could smell the odour of weed coming out of every coffee shop.&nbsp; On top of that, if the business I walked by wasn’t a coffee shop, it’d be a sex shop.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At first I walked by a lot of brothels without really knowing that I did (I had no idea what they looked like).&nbsp; It was only when I noticed that some buildings had a row of windows with curtains over them.&nbsp; In one of the windows, a woman wearing lingerie displayed herself for potential customers.&nbsp; I noticed that the building didn’t have a banner or any label.&nbsp; I guess people see that and just know (notice the guy who appears to be in deep contemplation in the picture).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This city has such a strange blend of an old European vibe mixed with the vices of modern people.&nbsp; It is kind of interesting yet sad to see people indulging in such things.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The XXX Flag</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a lot of places, we kept seeing a flag with a giant “XXX” printed on it and at first, my friend and I thought it just meant what everyone knows it as.&nbsp; Then we started seeing this on the side of old churches and even on police badges.&nbsp; We wondered what its actual meaning was.&nbsp; Apparently, that’s the flag of Amsterdam.&nbsp; What a crazy coincidence.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are more, but I didn’t bother posting them.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Anne Frank House</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While randomly walking, we stumbled on the Anne Frank House, the building that her family lived in during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.&nbsp; For those who don’t know who Anne Frank is, she was a victim of The Holocaust who wrote a diary, now published into a booked called “The Diary of a Young Girl”, documenting her life between 1942 and 1944.&nbsp; The building has now since become a museum for people to visit.&nbsp; Inside the museum, people could see the conditions that she lived in and some of her personal paraphernalia.&nbsp; Unfortunately, I couldn’t go in to see the museum for my self since my wallet got stolen (damn bastards!).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipO_cNvbAKR2Z7IWAXUJN68rlpPN06FxNFaEKb_P?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUjy4h3fGzjkG56-UY6CJDfyE1xpho3S2bmyHwSPe-uDqeo69zcJ4ExaB74eDzz2wzo5MS93Avf2ccUe1g-TlL5EnEUTQRex-soMhuS5mNIOO6ihmn5mFFp-GQ8So_eiMNPBxZ2d4LV-ES7fcJIIO0C5w=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After walking for almost the entire day (I reckon we walked about 30 kilometers that day), we went to go buy food.&nbsp; We would have been hungry a lot earlier if we didn’t stuff our faces at the breakfast buffet at our hotel back in Brussels.&nbsp; Knowing that the Netherlands was famous for its fries, that’s what we got.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Dutch Fries</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most unique thing about their fries is that they do not serve it with ketchup.&nbsp; The main sauce they use is mayonnaise.&nbsp; When I first heard about that, I thought it was the weirdest thing.&nbsp; I had never thought of combining those two things together.&nbsp; After trying it, I can say that I’m never having fries with ketchup ever again.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another cool thing about their fries is that they serve it in a nice conic container with a wooden fork-like utensil.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Other Dutch Delicacies</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although not as significant of a consumer of cheese as Germany and France, Amsterdam still has shops dedicated completely to cheese.&nbsp; Now I don’t know much about cheese, but the cheese in the store looks so delicious (I like the colour too).</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another thing that the Dutch are famous for is their beer.&nbsp; Everybody knows Heineken in North America (probably), but it’s really expensive there.&nbsp; Here, it’s like a staple, so I had to try it.&nbsp; We sat at a table overlooking the canals and enjoyed the view while we drank our beer.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Museumplein</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We went here that night and also the next morning.&nbsp; This area houses four museums: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Diamond Museum.&nbsp; In addition, there is also a concert hall and a giant sign for the city.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After going here, we went to Museumplein to see the place during the day.  After chilling out there for a little bit, we went back to the town center for some food before our train back.  We left in the early afternoon and by the time we went back to Stuttgart, there was time for a beer before going home.  Throughout the whole trip (Brussels and Amsterdam), I only spent around 80 euros with accommodations included, but not train tickets.  I ended up borrowing that money from my friend and we both had just enough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 160</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whenever one mentions the city of Brussels, a few things come to my mind, mainly chocolate and beer.&nbsp; Before actually visiting the city, I really expected that sort of thing, but I was wrong…oh so wrong.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We left in the morning of the 11th in a very uneventful train ride that lasted for about six hours before we actually reached the city.&nbsp; Upon arrival, we got off the train in a very typical looking European train station.&nbsp; We walked around the city and found our hotel.&nbsp; They assigned us a room for four people even though our party only had two people (we would have had more people if we could have arranged it in time).&nbsp; The room even had a flat screen TV and a bathtub (not just a regular shower!).&nbsp; What a great first impression.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After dropping off a few things, we went out to explore.&nbsp; We didn’t really have a plan as to what we wanted to see, so we walked from one place to another with an attitude like, “hey, that looks cool, let’s go there.”&nbsp; Using this method of exploring, we saw a few buildings with really cool architecture, like the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the Square Ambiorix.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> <br>
 </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After reaching the basilica, we realized that we ventured really far from the city center, so we decided to take the metro to the city center.&nbsp; At the metro stop, we looked on the map to see which direction we needed to go in.&nbsp; One of the local with his family waited at the metro stop and saw us looking at the map and so he explained how to get to the city center.&nbsp; I suppose he could instantly tell that we were tourists.&nbsp; The guy seemed nice, but almost too nice.&nbsp; I found that kind of suspicious and we avoided him for the rest of the metro ride.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We went on the metro, and off we went.&nbsp; A direct route to the city center didn’t exist from where we were so we had to transfer to a different train.&nbsp; One thing I noticed right away at our transfer station was the fact that there were so many people trying to cram on a train.&nbsp; I saw this and knew that could be trouble.&nbsp; Before going to Brussels, I had read on the Canadian foreign affairs site about <a href="http://voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/report_rapport-eng.asp?id=28000" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">what to look out for in Belgium</a>.&nbsp; It explicitly warned travellers about pickpockets operating at metro stations.&nbsp; Knowing this bit of information, I pretty much kept my hands in my pockets the whole time to prevent anybody from getting in there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I got on this crowded train, I did my best to get on the train while watching out for any petty thieves.&nbsp; At one point, my mind wandered, and my hands left my pocket.&nbsp; During the time between getting on the train and cramming on with everyone else, the dextrous hand of a pickpocket reached into the left front pocket of my jeans and grabbed hold of my precious wallet.&nbsp; Not long after, I noticed my empty pocket and immediately knew what happened.&nbsp; I had let my guard down for less than a minute and disaster struck.&nbsp; In a panic, I looked around for where my wallet could have gone even though I knew that all of my attempts would prove futile.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I looked at my friend and simply said, “somebody stole my wallet”.&nbsp; My friend then looked at me with an expression that said, “are you kidding me?”&nbsp; Normally, I joke around a lot, but never about something like this.&nbsp; I was dead serious.&nbsp; I knew what I had to do next.&nbsp; Call the credit card company to block my credit card and go to the police station to report the crime.&nbsp; I didn’t really see a point in reporting the crime since they couldn’t really do anything to get my stuff back, but I might need the report as proof for losing the cards that I had in there.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I talked to the first staff member of the metro I found and asked him where one would go to report a crime.&nbsp; I followed his instructions and when I arrived at the station, I found a police outpost.&nbsp; I went inside to talk to the police about the crime, but they simply told me that they were closed for the day and directed me back to the place I came from for help.&nbsp; Really?&nbsp; Are the police in this city that incompetent?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Knowing that I couldn’t really get these people to help me, I went back to where I came from.&nbsp; I went up to the information point and asked an employee there where I could go.&nbsp; Two security guards came out and directed me to yet another police outpost.&nbsp; This one had closed too.&nbsp; Okay, whatever, so what if the police here suck?&nbsp; At the very least, I had to call to cancel my credit card.&nbsp; I asked the security guards where I could have access to a phone to cancel my card.&nbsp; They led me to the nearest phone booth.&nbsp; Really?&nbsp; My wallet was stolen.&nbsp; How could I possibly have any money to make a phone call?&nbsp; They clearly weren’t very bright.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Afterward, one of the security guards took out his cell phone and called a number for stopping credit cards.&nbsp; After talking to the guy on the other end, I found that he could only block credit cards local to Belgium and he gave me a different number to call (I really hate bureaucracy).&nbsp; The security guard looked at the number I just wrote down and just shook his head.&nbsp; He probably didn’t want me calling it because it was a long distance number.&nbsp; I guess he cared more about his phone bill than helping someone out.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next thing they did was direct me to an actual police station nearby.&nbsp; Luckily, they were still open when I arrived.&nbsp; I borrowed their phone and called the number that the security didn’t let me call earlier.&nbsp; The guy on the other end told me that this number only works for Visa cards.&nbsp; I had a MasterCard.&nbsp; I was given yet another number to call except this time, the number didn’t work.&nbsp; I don’t know how I was able to interact with so many incompetent people in one day.&nbsp; I thought about what I could do next and realized that I could call home and ask my parents for the correct number.&nbsp; I briefly told them about what happened over the phone, assured that everything else was okay and that I didn’t lose my passport.&nbsp; They gave me the number; I called it; and then got my card blocked.&nbsp; I even arranged for a new card to be sent to me.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next step thing to do was to get the police report.&nbsp; I waited around for an hour or two and finally got everything done.&nbsp; I basically told the guy what happened, where it happened, and what was in my wallet.&nbsp; My wallet had 170 euros, driver’s license, my student ID, two bank cards, a credit card, my Bahn 25 card, and my Stuttgart metro pass.&nbsp; By now it was 8:30 at night.&nbsp; I hadn’t eaten since the morning either so I was immensely hungry.&nbsp; Using money I borrowed from my friend, I went to eat at McDonald’s.&nbsp; Afterward, I spent the rest of the night walking around the city.&nbsp; Despite the fact that I wasn’t in the mood to do anything anymore, I still walked around the city and saw what I could.&nbsp; During my walk, I could see how shady the city actually was.&nbsp; Some parts of the city were dominated by shady streets full of foreign immigrants.&nbsp; I suppose that’s the reason for why some people here need to resort to stealing to make a living.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next morning, we took the first train out and went to Amsterdam.&nbsp; We had already booked our accommodations there before leaving Germany, so it didn’t make sense to go home early.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I told my friends this story about my wallet, a few of them found it really surprising that pickpockets managed to steal out of a front pocket.  It surprised me at the time too.  Some of my friends even shared stories about how someone they knew once got pickpocketed in Brussels too.  If only I had known that earlier.  I guess it’s like what my parents said afterward, “I learned my lesson the hard way and paid for it with my wallet.”</p>
