<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visiting Vienna during the Christmas season offers a blend of history with festive markets. The city transforms into a hub of holiday activity, with several Christmas markets scattered across historic sites, each filled with seasonal goods, food, and glühwein. This trip also brought encounters with Vienna&#8217;s imperial past through its museums and palaces.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Christmas Markets and Festive Atmosphere</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vienna transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, with Christmas markets dotting the city landscape. We explored markets at various iconic locations such as St. Stephen&#8217;s Cathedral, Rathausplatz (City Hall), Schloss Schönbrunn, and Schloss Belvedere. Each market featured rows of wooden stalls selling ornaments, handcrafted gifts, and warm seasonal drinks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxGdbxQ-AqUcknGad4LP5GxUpfpgQS4JoQ5j6DDMncSDS47bei42N7_IsM5-Eu0A/photo/AF1QipNA0c2XiyJH2b-eLORDrkVMm1sdPo7XYakJz6gs?key=aFNILUdzTDZaRFFGbGVrYTlfMlo0NjlGWkMtTl9R" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczP7N-II7-iQlv82kmxQLkyhw2lXnYk0jWOjWRE7GR8I33BoIPtNcOcEzeqRdM5yXLi9gm7WEaxkDe7Dci0ZpQPChgnkYyo7IiuozoqiB4HlkGe3ojm1rzxVNE1byp_U6ped_aitlCXsGn2YfEHWZ0s1PQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The markets feature countless stalls serving Glühwein (mulled wine) in decorative mugs, which visitors can keep as souvenirs for a €5 deposit. The hot drinks were perfect for when walking around in the cold. There&#8217;s also food like Kaiserschmarrn (like a fluffy shredded pancake with sugar and jam), hot dogs, and chimney cakes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxGdbxQ-AqUcknGad4LP5GxUpfpgQS4JoQ5j6DDMncSDS47bei42N7_IsM5-Eu0A/photo/AF1QipP4HDovBo1CyZod_R_9KVXY1pQ1GhED0oE01OLJ?key=aFNILUdzTDZaRFFGbGVrYTlfMlo0NjlGWkMtTl9R" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMquKRPBiklxbUQ1tfHDWU_o26BVeYso2vOiGZSvIllLRscBkQsrMOWTem6g4wuL8axPzXg7jcbJQ9TFVLpIYc6L31IpQn7QzkfOjpPIQUhX3xTLpshY23LcOJyLF90LFKE_VnnnFmvJ5JKkeNFwJHrmA=w1560-h877-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While many stalls offer Christmas merchandise, we discovered that most vendors source similar items (likely outsourced). However, we learned of an artisanal market featuring exclusively local craftwork, though we weren&#8217;t able to visit it during our stay.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We heard about a market that exclusively sold locally made items, though unfortunately, we missed the chance to visit it. Another notable scene was the line of people outside Stephansdom, awaiting Christmas mass, reflecting the importance of the cathedral in Vienna&#8217;s holiday traditions. Despite this, the atmosphere remained lively</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Museums and Palaces</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vienna is known for its rich collection of museums and palaces. Among the highlights of our visit was the Albertina, though art museums are not my usual preference. A more engaging stop was the Schmetterlinghaus, the butterfly house, located near the Hofburg Palace. This greenhouse contained numerous butterfly species that fluttered among tropical plants, including banana trees. The butterflies flew around at their leisure. Some would land on the leaves, or even on the walking path, so we had to be careful as we walked.</p>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxGdbxQ-AqUcknGad4LP5GxUpfpgQS4JoQ5j6DDMncSDS47bei42N7_IsM5-Eu0A/photo/AF1QipOM83LV6jzVKDLThhzJsjSl-AcdNR8Rl3-LP9Ke?key=aFNILUdzTDZaRFFGbGVrYTlfMlo0NjlGWkMtTl9R" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOqaJjhIvOfEzFcFEQLROnABc6l69KJFrsUnxSyoiZePK_nwhDyeCswOIbqk3875Ng7Th_ClVvyWtf4VoithdSm69nnXY72D4ZhpjuFWKrUkZ98-wHN9omGDaA4qy3OlUbacY3RQVBwiC0g7V5SU4sNoA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the more memorable moments was witnessing a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis. However, the warmth inside contrasted sharply with the cold winter air outside, making heavy winter clothing less comfortable during the visit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Schatzkammer, Vienna&#8217;s imperial treasury, presented a vast collection of jewellery and regalia from the Habsburg era. The treasury holds significant historical pieces, including the Imperial Crown of Austria and the Royal Scepter, reflecting the power and influence the Habsburg dynasty once held. The collection includes the largest emeralds in the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Schloss Schönbrunn (a UNESCO World Heritage site), we took a guided tour through Maria Theresa&#8217;s private quarters, which are only accessible with a guide. Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions, was a pivotal figure in European history, known for modernizing the empire and her diplomatic maneuvers, including the marriage of her daughter Marie Antoinette (one of her 16 children) to Louis XVI of France. Schönbrunn, often likened to Versailles, served as a summer residence for the Habsburgs and features intricate Rococo interiors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Kapuzinergruft, the Imperial Crypt, provided a sobering experience as we explored the tombs of the Habsburg family, including those of Franz Joseph I and Maria Theresa. Franz Joseph, who reigned for nearly 68 years, oversaw significant political changes in Europe. The crypt narrates the legacy of the Habsburgs, a family that ruled Austria and much of Europe for centuries.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Culinary Experiences</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vienna&#8217;s culinary scene combines traditional Austrian dishes with influences from neighbouring regions. We sampled Flammkuchen, a thin flatbread from the Alsace region topped with crème fraîche instead of tomato sauce. The local Schweinsbraten (roasted pork) came served with Knödel (potato dumplings). This hearty dish involves slow-roasting marinated pork until tender, and the dumplings soak up the rich gravy, creating a filling and comforting plate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wiener Schnitzel, one of Austria&#8217;s most famous dishes, did not particularly stand out to me. I found the Japanese variation, tonkatsu, to be more enjoyable.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Flight Home in Comfort</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The return flight offered a chance to experience business class. Upon boarding, sparkling wine was served, and throughout the flight, options for higher-quality food and drinks were available, including steak, cheese plates, smoked salmon, and Johnnie Walker Black. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We landed late in the day in Auckland, and at that time many restaurants were already closed. We managed to get to <a href="https://beastandbutterflies.co.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beast &amp; Butterflies</a> fifteen minutes before the kitchen closed. We indulged in two standout dishes: the first was a lamb rump from Hawke&#8217;s Bay, a region in the North Island famous for its quality meats, and the second was a whole yellow belly flounder, a fish native to New Zealand waters. The lamb was cooked to perfection and was accompanied by sweet mini peppers, and briny olives. The flounder had a satisfying char on the exterior and was dressed with confit lemon, adding a subtle citrus note, and scattered with capers and parsley for bursts of salt and freshness.</p>

By the time we arrived, dusk had already settled over the city. A thick blanket of fog obscured much of the harbour. The true culinary gem of our Auckland experience was <a href="https://ahirestaurant.co.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ahi</a>, a restaurant that takes pride in sourcing ingredients from across New Zealand. The menu even lists the local origin of the main component for each dish.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each dish showcased a different region of the country. We began with a unique appetizer from the Hunter Hills in the South Island: wallaby tartare served on a chip made from puffed wagyu beef tendon. Tartare, being a preparation of finely chopped raw meat, offers a pure, unadulterated taste of the protein. In this case, the wallaby tartare presented a lean, mild gamey flavour profile with a subtle sweetness. As for the crispy chip underneath, while it was good, I wouldn&#8217;t have known it was a wagyu beef tendon without being told.</p>

Despite his humble origins on this rugged island, Napoleon rose to become one of history’s most legendary military leaders.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beyond Napoleon’s legacy, Corsica offered plenty of natural beauty as well. We spent some time soaking up the sun on Ajaccio’s picturesque white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear turquoise waters. The scenery looked like a postcard.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the help of our guide, we had the chance to sample some local Corsican delicacies like cured meats and cheeses. I even enjoyed some delicious upscale tacos, that made up for the really mediocre food we had in Italy, and it reminded us that anecdotally, we tended to find good food spots in the south of France.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A particular highlight was sampling various local Corsican honeys at the local market. The flavors were incredibly intense and complex compared to commercial honey. It&#8217;s well known that high fructose corn syrup is used to dilute commercial honey to make it cheaper, so it was nice to experience <em>real</em> honey. The beekeeper had honeys from bees feeding on different seasonal flowers, and each honey variety had distinct aromas and flavors. This experience helped me understand what pure honey is supposed to taste like.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There was no shortage of entertainment onboard. A lively couple danced for hours every evening in the ship&#8217;s nightclub. We attended a stand-up comedy show by comedian Al Ducharme. While some jokes didn’t land with us, the older crowd found him hilarious. This improvisaton while roasting members of the audience was funnier than his actual show. A musical act from the trio Divas3 delivered an energetic performance of classics from the 60s to the 90s. They even tried “My Heart Will Go On” from Celine Dion, but even their combined vocals could not match Celine Dion’s sheer power.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For some cultural enrichment, we browsed an intriguing art gallery on the ship showcasing works from famous artists like Salvador Dali and Rembrandt. Watching our first art auction was a unique experience. Its remarkable that cruise ships worldwide exhibit such precious art collections. Do they truly have so many original pieces from renowned artists or are some copies? Or is it just a way to sell to people who would buy them impulsively because they can&#8217;t research because the wifi on the ship isn&#8217;t free? If there are say hundreds of cruise ships constantly sailing, and each of them have art galleries, are there that many paintings from these masters to go around?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The following blog post was written with the assistance of AI</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On this day, we went back to road tripping across the Netherlands, seeing Delft, Rotterdam, and Kinderdijk.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA/photo/AF1QipOiIx8lsK_h8ZTbWY2QdDHWsbUC4CN6v4NY9pLO?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMfSjQwtqe3OoI68CslcChrhdW1Hvq9fcVkVEH7Xl-bv1vCEPBE0v2isf0Y-r1UgMw12YZ5boAKuEPY_VjFm4pAzRhU7gm1BumPD1Bnrg8bHw4FtlIvhw2xl7EenAKGcJ3LnvpLgvXLVeRNUCzx1CpVWQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We spent our time walking around the town square, where the city hall was located. The city hall is an example of the Dutch Renaissance architectural style, characterized by a symmetrical facade, ornate gables, and intricate detailing that reflects the artistic and cultural influences of the time. The facade showcases red brickwork, sandstone embellishments, and elegant windows. The central tower rises proudly, featuring a clock and a carillon, adding to the building&#8217;s visuals.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA/photo/AF1QipMfTvTRjUsiyzEb3TR18-hqkw0e6Miuuk2fN0Zf?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczO_s9tZa6AhZ5p41OqyQfdP2W1g9voLhrBTCypCoOb1VMxfHW220lGJ92S4STadSMDCBT5enKA347dvxPdjXL7bo9FgKkL-in79FEuGEl05XsRWv8WzUDqaJWJDJebULibd2KkGOqv0LfSTi_fzSJd1Kg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In front of the city hall, there was a outdoor exhibition by <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ecorunner.nl/" target="_blank">students from the Delft University of Technology</a>, whose goal was &#8220;promoting a sustainable future by building the world&#8217;s most efficient hydrogen powwered city car&#8221;. It really reminded me of something similar <a href="https://www.supermileage.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">students from UBC</a> had been doing back in the day when I was at UBC, except it was a gasoline car (renewables were not that big at that time).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA/photo/AF1QipOt6hOSYwKACuATdCGIgOJDMiBY6nwAcOLlKXVQ?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczM-Rf8TCeC9s7YAL7zq7TE31T3_3yjs_7hwBbzcMM_IR3Aecif4U5s84cHzjDbQ2g0Lrr56Mt6qJEPOlpint7DgiASEOIU-0pidvvjJn-xKumufaCi7rm4a7z_hPomd1EkZxy6jqaQtf_uuKSae9Sf9og=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other side of the square is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), renowned for its impressive Gothic design, rich history, and its role as the final resting place of members of the Dutch and Prussian royal family. Other notable people, such as Johannes Vermeer, also found their final resting place in Delft. This is something I missed out on &#8211; I only realized this after I had left.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Rotterdam, we returned to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2020/03/07/european-road-trip-day-1-the-hague-rotterdam-baarle-hertog-antwerp/" target="_blank">market hall</a>, which offers a bustling food market, gourmet shops, and residential spaces. Countless stalls and vendors showcase a kaleidoscope of fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, aromatic spices, succulent meats, and an array of international cuisine. We ate a variety of things like a duck confit burger, satay skewers, stroopwaffles, samosas, and pickled herring.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We walked over to the nearby old harbour from the markethall, a historic waterfront area dating back to the 14th century and was once a bustling hub of maritime activity. It&#8217;s also the home of heritage bulidings like the Witte Huis, known as the first high-rise buildin gin Europe. Today, the area has been transformed into a picturesque urban space adorned with vibrant terraces, cafes, and boutiques. It&#8217;s a huge contrast to the Cube Houses next door that are a set of residences shaped like cubes tilted at a 45-degree angle.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPYXyei0ds2FbeCvWBWs97n7eYnROZTjhScBbJrgRJKLnJedw1ziiyCGBn2tWi94g/photo/AF1QipPw1Mq68Pkmz-mavgb9c2OKw23i-yLO0IWcWgSu?key=UWdQYjMtYnVhLWVzN1hxVDYzTy1XZm44Z1hNd1FR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMi2sOWHctlFOf7rSRrdmyQpLGa7XxCVgdWESRuPiVQa-32-4t5OOvJ4O2octMta_AMAAMigmOvUEp5CsMwIEcd0d5Nqm_vjy7pjwBrIzulW5baDEUcy9WnAFZBIKf2mS3lT19yAsr2S6FdUcVm4sTq1g=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our final destination of the day to the town of Kinderdijk, we saw a different set of windmills from what we saw <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2023/08/01/windmills-canals-and-cheese-a-journey-through-edam-marken-volendam-and-zaanse-schans/" target="_blank">a few days back</a>. Netherlands&#8217; windmills are a testament to the centuries-long battle against the sea. The majority of the Netherlands is situated below sea level, making it vulnerable to flooding from rivers, and the sea. Windmills played a crucial role in pumping water out of low-lying areas and draining marshes to reclaim land for agriculture and habitation. Both Kinderdijk and Zaanse Schans are popular destinations to see Dutch windmills, but Kinderdijk seemed to have a more serene and rural atmosphere, surrounded by quiet waterways and fields, while Zaanse Schans is more accessible since it&#8217;s close to Amsterdam, where most international travelers fly into.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s more of <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipME8_9DOlUZ0yRNI3mSEoMaEwRa7L8_Bs6z_h__LV0IJgKaRQLnlkUTHiFr6LTcWA?key=bjQzOHNNQXZyYUFhSEFwZElVNUdSYXVSY0FPS0Rn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Delft</a>, <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOy9XOeo-Em9rLaLUASVE0N1vgkKDFxRJtq_hRJSYULDD-iogxBFiADFH_vyyZABw?key=RkhfMUprZW1WTTdtWnl0ejNZeWgxbHpCeDRRWFNn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rotterdam</a><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPQ1NBGWDpMDfysk0ObWSKPOJkHdW6-9gzJg6Ec_Ac1boIJ-ARJrWHgqln_KbXvdQ?key=Q2d3bWdCNnIwNkNDUGNBLXhWN2pOa3oxbHUzU3Bn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">,</a> and <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPYXyei0ds2FbeCvWBWs97n7eYnROZTjhScBbJrgRJKLnJedw1ziiyCGBn2tWi94g?key=UWdQYjMtYnVhLWVzN1hxVDYzTy1XZm44Z1hNd1FR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kinderdijk</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among the iconic varieties of Dutch cheeses, Edam stands out with its distinctive round shape and unmistakable mild, nutty flavour.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM3ru1_wFszAiev0t9rRQaDWwbk_M2x95uaKLjj2SDKbbsFerY08UZffoViWxd6Dw/photo/AF1QipPPjMafIaRa7Xgna3HLOg2bn9ojNIXGfaXeHwG7?key=UkQzSUVyTlVZZ3ljdG5LeDVIVXNXZ05ucWVaUVhR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczNYbJXXly4Bf4m7qs-ye0tpyPkBiL_0uMB_mpUdZ6Np0mL5PlxXR3RTwb2z7sbJByb90X9G24hpmbQD2leG9lJPUr0jpVwO7FwfYRvXr2EdNPm7DmtTqWxALdVn0Pd5ODQVIlypZ99ZrVbkQ9q-9HlR8g=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Originating from the picturesque town of Edam in the Netherlands, this cheese has a storied history dating back centuries. We visited the Henri Willig cheese store and a lot of fun sampling different flavours of cheese, and brought back home a 2kg ball of Edam.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM3ru1_wFszAiev0t9rRQaDWwbk_M2x95uaKLjj2SDKbbsFerY08UZffoViWxd6Dw/photo/AF1QipP5iKCj0py_v6PgfFH4Zh8dtf6gnZBNQnQZO2Fc?key=UkQzSUVyTlVZZ3ljdG5LeDVIVXNXZ05ucWVaUVhR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczNYt-tXF5IFY--M0GF7p9a33Mql4wfk_zV0zKrax4FMoX8JDy4moUJT6qUnF98vmPqWciYq0hLVHbCSbODx8zC388h6FRPtPdRhEnb8xy8pYA9ZrEoG9xk4aXeciOi4jsDrM-5bAQgBe8Uj1JHBdIw-Ew=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Edam boasts a rich history steeped in maritime trade and medieval architecture. Strolling along its cobblestone streets, it felt like I transported back in time, passing by canals, centuries-old bridges, and beautifully preserved gabled houses. It&#8217;s only a short 30-minute car ride from Amsterdam, and is a popular destination for cycling tours too.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM3ru1_wFszAiev0t9rRQaDWwbk_M2x95uaKLjj2SDKbbsFerY08UZffoViWxd6Dw/photo/AF1QipMUOm2VY5QW8xU8Cu-hcQSmE3QSuI3UKR-sR1GN?key=UkQzSUVyTlVZZ3ljdG5LeDVIVXNXZ05ucWVaUVhR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMPWCij_i6GI50bQdo4PfhnZ1KNEoNjZSgLhhID8dZgfdVAR1Dasp3G4_O9fka1E1H1_94b_0y4MGyqMFrhWQJfiH3fzXWepgPBvxFzW-W5iAUWQlsUD4CtEttpfYS5Tk2Q9PWJUbXjI1ensdFneqMBwA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The town&#8217;s iconic cheese market (though closed on the day we visited), would have added a dash of old-world charm.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPQ1NBGWDpMDfysk0ObWSKPOJkHdW6-9gzJg6Ec_Ac1boIJ-ARJrWHgqln_KbXvdQ/photo/AF1QipNSD2n9CU1b8m8Jr0orRThtstQPH4T3zTQIM4OE?key=Q2d3bWdCNnIwNkNDUGNBLXhWN2pOa3oxbHUzU3Bn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMbuWBC_NhU-MQAuQ3fXEkM7BFUB0BKWmz3iTK6c0K2ZORS1AprEYh2IInpREdssDkTaFS33ehwNI9x_qidSzqt9aJIiM4xc68dMUqHc7_hZxNRovuIKzyCrqTOMv4HMh0dm8RTgrBK2VFThgcBlOP7Lw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moving on from Edam, we reached the nearby village of Marken, a village nestled on a serene island in the Markermeer. We wandered through its picturesque streets and admired the architecture of the quaint wooden houses.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPQ1NBGWDpMDfysk0ObWSKPOJkHdW6-9gzJg6Ec_Ac1boIJ-ARJrWHgqln_KbXvdQ/photo/AF1QipNDzxnUg5XoyofvF_m6GM2PAxgN3F2EBqqZCjJA?key=Q2d3bWdCNnIwNkNDUGNBLXhWN2pOa3oxbHUzU3Bn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOsvejC-JQTiBzsn0O1S0tSjbCO2HsVvRAUTUP410mwtkXjF_hStJjpPlhBpaNSZR_y_gDeh2AO1GvIz_Oh2gxfhUV05rVLM2IYTQVvFu-SvGCvWUoWzItoucYnE4wQdftTwOgylBDIewrRvZL1JiUZmA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eventually, we reached the harbourfront and enjoyed the scenery. Life here seemed so much simpler, free of the complexities of modern life. It&#8217;s as if each day begins with the gentle lapping of waves against the shores and the sun rising over the horizon, casting a golden glow on the water. And in this small town, all the neighbours know each other by name and a greeting is never far away. The slower pace of life allows for a deeper appreciation of nature&#8217;s beauty. Sunsets over the water become daily spectacles, with evenings spent savouring simple pleasures – perhaps a freshly caught fish grilled by the water&#8217;s edge or a bonfire on the beach.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Though not far from Marken, immediately we&#8217;re teleported back to civilization. Their presence reminds us of how the Netherlands has advanced so much from the olden days of windmills.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP8s43TF9K7LnlqZnB39-2r2SGXkMjyAkTcL0cnJ679hFCcjp7e87j5W1a8HxHmCg/photo/AF1QipOb5LtldOCEdqoIr7OQYrlbPz8ko6m6D6X5jDlC?key=RUhWVHhaZjBnRC0zR3lTdjFxNjhjaEJRam5vQUd3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczN3U6hYgmUSsGhjl3BCyYZMPVKpq48zFtGGRVLTTfog9_fKEcCSrNQGQCApBSB5QO0By5wgi2Ll22mqYe75v-P7ZNB6VI0CjaXfljYZD6WFznINAPLiLyW-75EkrQdCORb_HKy3e-j5h3P6nxEAGXbPcw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our next destination, was a nearby village called Volendam. We walked briefly along the seashore and along the inner streets, but didn&#8217;t stay long. After our enchanting experience in Marken, Volendam seemed to echo the same charm of Marken.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMK2SLVKur0SX7xfkzbUc755h5k9miboMTkQRpzN3aNb2EZC5jrIMVnPc3TuNLIQQ/photo/AF1QipM4MIIUaXndznZcS1kEvE95eX5gFeyDfaIw01rT?key=blBLWFZFS2ltTzFHZzdLdXlqdTREa0dMbUppWWhB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczM_5hI6ulUzbsHlEswY2Z9lwbeqsCuwV7tDGs5nYFI9BMRFlVjjNRpxx-CN9atbW74-Y0okdvx07X6T4zOSmQO5DY767IssVEs9cdwilyN3uM6prD6RdpA7tWS4jwc7os57gcJ_5ySSmzqPkJtkTGJZ4A=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a bit of a shift, we moved away from oceanside villages and made our way to the last destination of the day at the windmills of Zaanse Schans. Zaanse Schans is a living open-air museum that whisks visitors back in time to the Dutch Golden Age. This captivating village showcases an array of meticulously preserved windmills, offering a genuine glimpse into the Netherlands&#8217; rich industrial heritage. After so many visits to the Netherlands, this was actually my first time seeing actual windmills!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMK2SLVKur0SX7xfkzbUc755h5k9miboMTkQRpzN3aNb2EZC5jrIMVnPc3TuNLIQQ/photo/AF1QipP_QHo3EcdHIrCjS79sMBcGNRBRlI1bzZv1kU4W?key=blBLWFZFS2ltTzFHZzdLdXlqdTREa0dMbUppWWhB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMDDw_WtvSMNsK6rLaCEEVhY8qO8bjUrTsalYHSDzsZuKu_nxDgTWZl9osnUqve4p6nkcO7K4AQVXcvCR_apDrWn1LPfNLgxdqjpoUsOzjDKkfVXKO2wgNXzBWZT6SO0cjeQu7zNHJcrPhI6UrH4ZySbw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we tried to enjoy the scenery around us, one visitor found himself in a sneezing spree from the pollen-rich air. The sneezes were so strong we could see the particles coming out, and it was tough walking behind him ever since having to deal with COVID. It was kind of comical.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The following blog post was written with the assistance of ChatGPT</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Returning to the vibrant city of Berlin, I embarked on a journey filled with intriguing sites, delicious flavors, and profound moments. As I wandered through the streets, I encountered both familiar landmarks and new experiences.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMHiVa3gVoKmGKjpMQfaSUk8rjTaLBJEvw9f5kT?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXR4vpktVyPXobaNQM0On_FuNCj3LbXXj13bS5ZbPx0eGRoo7yjuYJ6FjV2Jbe8vr46x_2CAaZy4BRKm4jchrUbrtLFgHcUkUmrZx5OD783jObLwvNa8MacBdkpgvGL4erqZVQVhdM9XbVUdzbyP7MHZA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s well known that Germany has a large Turkish population, and as a result, Turkish food is prevalent across the country, especially the döner kebab. We stumbled upon <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://www.terasrestaurant.de/" target="_blank">TERAS Berlin</a> and I can safely say it&#8217;s the best döner I&#8217;ve had. There is even a framed photo of Angela Merkel eating their döners!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipN-qN5LTvWWaEamTSYCwzbxL6whB1Ler3PEiLT-?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUFYeT0uVoBOlgcF-Cn__xqdUTM1amfV9NUBQrQDctQpFpEzUS4vxXU5rlV7jIIbh1OV72CAb5PoYG6Bdo21KiDivT7PITFZpRryggl2XFjYId7qXfOEkHhS21AlegflEuYN-hhl4rpEf7bZg_Grlb3Bw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We walked around the city, and eventually made our way to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Somehow the irregular placement of each concrete block gives the whole area an eerie feeling &#8211; something just doesn&#8217;t feel right, which is pretty apt for the purpose of the memorial.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipONRxkQWiBrs2-bi0Gcn47SuuB_uzRBycZqoINf?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUyBCIi_LqEA6gVEBER56itHWUZyzZ_21-IzioT-lGztPAHwrfDNyi_49uTIPNT4R8Ei0_syMRELKdY_hc91TQ2b9beEPhrL3p0G2dEi-tf82hQdNMNNGHoxXjIWqVWgRpj8_PlINMN4OFDiKlWoE8rDw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not far from memorial, there is a sign indicating the location of where Hitler&#8217;s bunker used to be. Nothing of the old bunker remains and the area is now apartment blocks and parking lots. If it weren&#8217;t for the sign, people would have forgotten all about it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next day we took a tour of the Reichstag. The Reichstag is the seat of the German parliament, and it has been since the founding of the Germany as a country.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipPsBu7AEvnWncIJOg5rooKT_tlRw6TuF1j0dTf8?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUBPphi8cwQfuyyczbeCJcRnufbni-6ZD9PF5U_Fcy6-LDsLfrro5XJeULRBoR3a5cWCp4VsCnZ9aUFG0lHS97aM7vcKyOTs8nREY2MxaVCeLst2BpHhs3kCNxJ6tjPz3T8jJmM_gtLoSdw0vJPmOmWdg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The dome at the top has since been rebuilt since the war. It&#8217;s replacement is a panoramic glass done that allows people to have a 360 degree view of the city. The glass represents the transparency in government.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipORh7i7pYsi77BTXyXmhjsV38-VWmGJyQQDoP-i?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUkF21u58050vuXRqP1Po6k3lh1pkNvxjJ63Tk3r7jKZsiu5_oazmfO6bJQAYOA8GGYI2g7kCMv2m8d4CwHAA4uZtOHkUXkCTc0F-m4aiZLuylw5ryal2JGNs8NXOC8z6LGAIL6xjXaEZtpnDz30RyqtA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first went to Berlin in 2011, I learned about the Ampelmann, the symbol used on pedestrian walking lights in East Berlin and other parts of former East Germany. I thought it was kind of a cool quirk of Berlin, but now its popularity has exploded. There&#8217;s almost always an Ampelmann shop in every tourist district.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNHo-qVz7tQJQPtAo-FrDf11TlPtKxELnd5W1bu?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXJP2DmQEmj82Z1Ob4GSsDXFcC3mEalo5cHTqO2DmY20rTN9d3hbmAkItboJveoCdi-qdLjh_DPu9lKMDbKtSVXG-ouwJL8eVzMf2iPBHTmFByXbNX-EcFX8z3QrVHiMZ2bl9n8NroS763iO1qIzmHcNw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We visited the Rausch Chocolatier near our hotel. I always thought it was a chocolate shop targeted at tourists. But now knowing more about chocolate and having a better palate, I found that they do in fact do chocolate well. They still make the typical sugary kind, but also the single origin stuff with specified percentages of cocoa.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipOh6-KEihz9OQLbitrE7j6X4GAWhnAMn7-p_KCL?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXVAiOhCnHcK97s9h6dCM7PokPS1mEPtzSA3gVpioKZSQr6InemTXE412w6bzpVpb4AAEZ7JhLQZ87Kqcld7vUb1SH2rnrbfC7FoJ-lbQiNBVQCfl20HlRCPEIbnsBdYlc0AfVGX0h16D4IV3pJhFlqEg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nearby was the Gendarmenmarkt, normally a picturesque square bustling with activity. However, it was under maintenance during my visit. I guess this is typical of travelling during low season (February in our case) &#8211; this is the time to do maintenance on stuff.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNOxm41pThOv5hsu3DbHgit9z1FgE4UlTpv1oCk?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaVTOi-hb0rzjJtgv2JQ77e-oJa_heZ0nGF-4pWRz_nuSv36moX_gaXpKllV52BqE_pp50-a98XX7v0wJL3PvRTZFUH3tbKfRNekM5hJhTnyE4J9lCM3Rlz_lm3onARfxHHp6TU3gPLYWZeJ8YLIotnEhw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later, we made our way to Checkpoint Charlie, a legendary checkpoint in Berlin&#8217;s history. It was once a border crossing between East and West Berlin. It stands as a symbol of the Cold War era and the division of the city. Today, a replica of the guardhouse and a sign mark the historical site, attracting visitors who seek to understand Berlin&#8217;s past. It serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles endured by those seeking freedom and reunification.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMZ08IG83M3O_p9k-RbYnzfZvhNj7pnH2O8uh4V?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaVVL8p2Bfr-hEM8Ap48uWk26cIgv_5MN9oYW0acinsvMfTVajysMx-iCLOYUdJW2A1O3SgK63yqM_YWc4pOw_KeK_QN_S-vatqzwqzRXDwJhzAZkWYPbrQf2wxkvYVTvPlVy7WJ6VDGHVHjb_LeGqY_rA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Topography of Terror, we delved into the darker chapters of Berlin&#8217;s history, reflecting on the atrocities committed during the Nazi regime. It&#8217;s a free museum documenting the Nazi war crimes. The biggest surprise for me there was seeing so many of the perpetrators of the crimes either committed suicide or were handed short sentences, which felt like they were let off easy considering what they did.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipM0UNs9l9nGIvUu0M1bR3FBGTmRXejhG8PwWN3R?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXP2zYGnv3h2yeGu3f_BzCeI4c7i577ljJkiqFvsKpMoN83gG93_KNTtuytJYeM_4G6bMUBZ9LYmpTnCtrvy22K1INZJ3HjYcA7d6HVa1Z2pWOmWReg0jQ05A2bBG8zTmsHx-oQI6S03sfPNcaNIRMmdg=w1635-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to finding the best döner, I&#8217;ve found the best currywurst &#8211; at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://www.curry61.de/" target="_blank">Curry61</a>. Currywurst is a beloved German street food delight. A juicy sausage is generously slathered with a zesty curry ketchup and sprinkled with aromatic curry powder. The result is a harmonious symphony of savory, tangy, and slightly spicy notes for the palate. Each bite of the sausage releases juices, mingling with the vibrant sauce to create an explosion of flavour.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNODeoFwlV5VSQoCbqmkzjcvdY6EcmQxD3tvsgS?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXJNGgBIYFYHPtfExX1cxXZvPbvgL71iIdDWM927JaksEIiDtfdERtPtbGvunHzatRMPG6gKqYt5lDH_57c6SURWOqHVnFdKbjH0laXNG2hSrZNSsM-wgXZNaCfEmPuOwabAKanmvI-lopOg_pnZqBTYA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the rain, we visited the Berlin Wall Memorial. It stands as a reminder of the division that once existed. This solemn site encompasses preserved segments of the wall, offering a tangible connection to the past. As we walked along the memorial, we could see the stark contrast between the barren death strip and the vibrant cityscape beyond. People can still buy pieces of the Berlin Wall &#8211; apparently there was so much of the wall that they can sell these pieces for years.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipOg1YExlk_nOEpceh6CxIF5aGHde5MQ8c5fNqpv?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUooiOonehmzTY5RLEilPVaEdW9mphoB4DISyaKIJ4rbk-tYnd0KcIT7tMlKtWkT-oc6_p-ePcIkHhy8-nOmqawrQQXhlSH39lZ0DZzKtBxvdkYVxI1EkWrVFDPCDM9cG12g5GW2ThROijrQrecdh6syA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Totally by chance, that morning, I saw a news post about a destroyed Russian tank parked in front of the Russian Embassy in Berlin &#8211; we had to see it. This bold and symbolic protest highlighted the ongoing tensions and conflicts surrounding the Ukraine War. It&#8217;s a brutal reminder to the Russians that what they were doing in Ukraine isn&#8217;t working. This showed me that visiting places isn&#8217;t just about the tourist attractions, but also the zeitgeist that influences them. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMsT9xsQr3iJpHOyAnt47BvNKFmb64XpQ_anLVz?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXnzg6_Rb5z8LUIynZrGgKJ3OMcjit2C6fQ39Ob6vZrPbPCqkTZhBkAhf6RheC7RT5H0Pis9Pb4qBMAtAeNyO5En8j6KQIB6f1KvEvYXHd0fPtT2s4DrNfl_YQauAWT1bRXDQclBmNTrVxumljpRQl4Rw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another piece of the zeitgeist is seeing more and more electric car stores popping up everywhere &#8211; this time from a Chinese brand called Nio in the shopping district of Kurfürstendam. It feels as if tons of these companies are coming out of the woodwork now that Tesla is so big. It&#8217;s also one of the many luxury stores in the Kurfürstendam. The neighbourhood epitomizes the city&#8217;s cosmopolitan flair. Lined with luxury boutiques, trendy cafés, and bustling shops, it is a haven for shoppers and fashion enthusiasts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipPmSYRgsyoBa4Ma7HYhF5mlGc0374_lJVv8O6W7?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXvUDwhBrTnxsj20U1uuDVbcZtQUq5x56WnkNPJw-6ry_pAOlxhQv9xrj5hMyuTljMltkXSvJZcR9YwuYXViImcnNCkOBkdTcZt_9CBurb-S_OTQLsv2qWi42Mvj8J4yMEsjs22hw38yspkIfpGm1QDeA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the end of the day, word had spread and now a giant crowd gathered around the destroyed tank in front of the Russian embassy. People all over the city came out to show their support of Ukraine.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipN9BJ8-qxIfz2BMVD-JX4mwXx3bIH8x6miB6p8t?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaX46IG03BUymIY_XdFdhBI3f32RrZMVGgcOTOscQP2RcAXgvl4kshFg4wSCXNNe2CLZ5LvLizmqV0hSHKCLj8eHFm_motZPLBPHFWhlnvVWtEuX-CJcXswuTAGBogVPppbcv8bxHwEWpOgq3hE7Izow_Q=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The protest continued at Brandenburg Gate. By then a whole stage was set up with someone at the mic calling out for peace and justice. It was quite a sight to behold. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At that moment, it occurred to me that the Ukraine War is a lot closer to the people in Berlin than it is to people like us who live in North America.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipOgKKaDvZVboLH0xQ0kf0c_e0icsw7GoHTl87Z_?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaVfZyHXaqGMQjLiqQ-i0UsVoCRdMU99WWr8Ust7ZIvwAxRepoJ4vorBGtjeQXDO4A_e3nnJOTD2fwE2BQLGNOQrJLXkBe2N9OXNWk3XS_ReC05OcsK0TJGB9QCyESoxCbxuYuVA6gQpZLmlusBaOVmLjg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On our last day, we visited Museum Island. Museum Island is a cultural treasure trove, a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses an extraordinary collection of museums and art galleries. From the impressive Pergamon Museum to the Neues Museum&#8217;s ancient Egyptian artifacts, each institution showcases a unique aspect of history, art, and culture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNHeWxtGK8gM4DJWmbuUCjr0ZdjbS1arfFoB7wM?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXrB4I8DKdAKqH5PwGVVrphUqrWchDtZGD6hNKC09Kym2XAzP6N2ATgTmSeglZhe08l6bQzgzukHNiqdl-k6OwjX9n1cuAWiSdJ5ev_nSkQYUmy5iKi0uRjdHuccKDAmAe_YxT8rytuFo_hBrBFFLSAEw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also on Museum Island is the Berlin Cathedral, a majestic architectural marvel. By random chance, entry that day was free. We got to see its magnificent domed structure, adorned with intricate details, as it dominates the city&#8217;s skyline. The cathedral&#8217;s significance extends beyond its religious importance, as it is also the dynastic tomb of the House of Hollenzollern, the former royal family of Germany. Unfortunately, the tomb was under renovation, so we could not visit it.</p>

</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow" style="flex-basis:66.66%">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A short walk further, we reached Alexanderplatz, the bustling heart of Berlin. It&#8217;s a cool area showing the remnants of the former East Berlin, but otherwise, I didn&#8217;t find what was so enticing of a place to go except that it&#8217;s picturesque aside from visiting the Fernsehturm, which didn&#8217;t exactly align with my interests.</p>
</div>
</div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMDxSnRCIce3iRmDW90EcWmldj6hK3Wz8jfTF_e?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaU-BH2nObxfPnrAjQv8lUFSDNg2z-KO6QmHfTbv3d7tlodgy8uuZOdc9CiWSVcXz46b0C7FlD5URgs1KlqHqIHQIBm9DDuj9n33XrLt_Tn5XQFj_8rVXpHA723KU-iJrH9C-jpMichg1xJft6YWALIX6A=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The East Side Gallery, a living testament to freedom and artistic expression, stretches along a remaining section of the Berlin Wall. This open-air gallery showcases a captivating collection of murals created by artists from around the world. Each artwork reflects the hopes, dreams, and struggles of a divided city and the triumph of unity. Originally, it was painted by artists after the opening of the Berlin Wall, but now different sections of the wall get routinely repainted to show the zeitgeist of our society.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipP52HmLSNJZUhtdKwDZ1A6XgQIA4Rr4lRzRYN82?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaU3YyhoVueWghMrttn63WnItiTwk8AULDKWVXrLut3qQjaX5ql59d9UcRmSfw3ilJQA810njuMSF-pmkhaF1GaATLC5Na8gqeSN3h_g5vYcSnI4L1ZVgKqto12MfBo8fhyJhLN9GfkPHMg6467EJZbEYQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our last destination was Markthalle IX. This historic market hall has been transformed into a bustling food destination, where local vendors showcase their artisanal products and delights. While it had lots of stalls ranging from produce to specialty cheeses, baked goods, and international cuisines, it seemed to cater mostly to tourists (it&#8217;s also expensive). It was also super crowded and grungy and not exactly the type of place I wanted to be at.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am convinced that the best way to explore Europe is by car. Having a car allows you to stay on a schedule that YOU define, you aren&#8217;t bound by any plane or train schedules, and you can go to the places less travelled &#8211; it&#8217;s the ultimate flexibility. Our journey starts in the Netherlands and will go through six more countries in the span of a week &#8211; something very difficult to without a car. Our first day takes us to The Hague, Rotterdam, Baarle-Hertog, and Antwerp.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1460" height="821" src="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?fit=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4885" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?w=1460&amp;ssl=1 1460w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day1.png?resize=171%2C96&amp;ssl=1 171w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Hague (Den Haag)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first stop is The Hague in the Netherlands. It&#8217;s the home of the International Court of Justice (pictured above). This is the international court that resolves international disputes that the UN is involved in. It was involved in well known cases such as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to judge the perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to judge the perpetrators of crimes committed during the internal struggles in Yugoslavia that eventually led to its dissolution.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For lunch, we searched around for something to eat and we could try some herring since that&#8217;s a popular dish in the Netherlands. We found a street food stall near us not far from where we were and proceeded to go inside and order. One problem though&#8230; the entire menu was in Dutch and there was no English to be found anywhere. We stood there looking confused for a moment, before I piped up and simply asked the staff (knowing that the Netherlands has a very high degree of English literacy) what we should order. He simply replied, &#8220;herring sandwich!&#8221;. It&#8217;s raw herring preserved in a brine in a sandwich along with condiments such as raw onions and pickles. It&#8217;s got a nice fishy freshness to it (like sashimi), but a saltier and more sour flavour because of the brine. This is going to be one of those foods that I&#8217;ll crave once I leave and can&#8217;t get anywhere else.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another cool place to visit in The Hague is the Madurodam &#8211; it&#8217;s a park built purely on minatures. Imagine famous landmarks in the Netherlands, like the canals of Amsterdam, old town city squares, and palaces, but in miniature form! As a fan of Lego, I can definitely appreciate looking at miniatures!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rotterdam</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, we drove to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and stopped by the Market Hall for more food (I&#8217;m always down to eat). This time, we had yet another Dutch speciality: the stroopwafel. It&#8217;s hard to say no to two thin crispy wafers with gooey caramel in between.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And because I really enjoy eating protein, I couldn&#8217;t resist trying some cured meat. I think this is more of a Spanish thing as opposed to Dutch thing though. I found the flavour way too salty for my tastes (and I use a lot of salt when cooking), but I&#8217;m not sure what it&#8217;s supposed to taste like.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After leaving Rotterdam, we headed towards Belgium &#8211; well kind of. The cool thing about Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau is that a border between Belgium and the Netherlands cuts right through the town in seemingly random spots. You could just be walking down the street along the main avenue of the town and randomly end up in the Netherlands, then in Belgium, and then back again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On our way out of the town, we noticed lane lines that we hadn&#8217;t seen before in North America. At first, we didn&#8217;t know why the lines were painted like that, but upon closer analysis, the road is simply a road shared by both cars and bicycles and the red section shows where the bikes should be, and the grey area is the section where cars should be when passing a bicycle. By allocating a space for the car to pass, the cars don&#8217;t get too close to the cyclists, thus reducing the risk of an accident. How cool!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Soon, we were fully in Belgium in the city of Antwerp and took a stroll in the old town square. The buildings here look pretty Belgian because of the way the roof inclines &#8211; it&#8217;s as if there are little steps as opposed to a smooth incline (so-called stepped gables).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After just about a week of travel, we were pretty exhausted. Bali was a really welcome change. We could just literally do nothing and relax. Our villa came with an indoor pool!! I&#8217;ve never had such nice accommodations. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We got to try some Indonesian Roti. Each dish was like a dollar!! We watched the staff at the restaurant tossing and spinning the dough and everything. They have plain roti, roti with sausage, cheese, onions, or even dessert roti!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Getting around is pretty easy with the many taxis around or even a motorbike rental. I&#8217;ve read that there have been altercations between taxi drivers and Grab drivers, but I didn&#8217;t experience that while I was there, except for some areas clearly marked as not Grab friendly. There aren&#8217;t a lot of gas stations around, but a lot of stores fill up petrol in vodka bottles and sell them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This section of the beach was part of a restaurant/bar/resort called Ku De Ta, and people could just sit back and enjoy a drink or two (cigars are on the menu too!) while enjoying the beach. Locals own the chairs on the beach and charge people to sit on them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We couldn&#8217;t chill on this beach, but we did have a pool in our villa! Mike made an amazing video tour of the villa in his video below!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I spent my time in the pool learning how to swim (at this point, I didn&#8217;t even know how to float). I started off being super uncomfortable even leaning back to float, and was really frustrated at not being able to do basic actions on the water. I looked up YouTube videos on how to float and tread water and eventually figured it out! We basically stayed in the pool until we got hungry for dinner &#8211; this time to try local seafood. Mike, if you&#8217;re reading this, you missed out by not recording this part. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The day after the bike tour, Tobias drove me and his two friends to Chiemsee, the Bavarian Sea. &nbsp;It&#8217;s called a sea, but it&#8217;s really just a lake.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Chiemsee#5897601481479986994" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ubieIfuApEM/Udh9TPJunzI/AAAAAAAAOMo/s41dpBfY9yE/s912/IMG_9343.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Herrenchiemsee</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We took a ferry to some of the islands in the lake. One of them is called the Herreninsel, and on that island there is an unfinished castle, built by <a class="zem_slink" title="Ludwig II of Bavaria" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_II_of_Bavaria" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia noopener noreferrer">King Ludwig II</a>. The castle is called the &#8220;Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee&#8221;, which translates to the &#8220;New Palace of Herrenchiemsee&#8221;.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Chiemsee#5897601982423151170" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-JBK_SpYJReQ/Udh9wZT4skI/AAAAAAAAShw/jSt8hDPbs9I/s1280/IMG_9352.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ludwig II was inspired by the construction of the French palace of Versailles and so he wanted to build a palace just like it. Unfortunately, he didn&#8217;t have quite as much money as <a class="zem_slink" title="Louis XIV of France" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_XIV_of_France" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia noopener noreferrer">Louis XIV</a>, so he couldn&#8217;t finish his castle.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Chiemsee#5897602217593761378" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qIL6O98cbMU/Udh9-FY7bmI/AAAAAAAASh4/hZVwb7xm8ew/s1280/IMG_9356.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I would have liked to take more pictures of the castle, but we were forbidden to take any. From what I can recall, a lot of rooms were modeled after rooms in the Palace of Versailles, except they were unfinished.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Fraueninsel</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another island is the Fraueninsel. On this island, there is a monastery.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Chiemsee#5897602578658257570" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8AapDzU0JAA/Udh-TGdaaqI/AAAAAAAASiA/d2ofsZMuL2Y/s1280/IMG_9362.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some people also live on this island, but there aren&#8217;t many. The houses here are probably vacation homes for rich people.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Leberkäse</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For lunch, I had Leberkäse, which is a traditional Bavarian dish. Directly translated, it means liver cheese, but I&#8217;m not sure how much liver was in it though. The meat actually consists of corned beef, pork, bacon and onions baked into a shape like a slice of bread. I guess it is Bavarian meatloaf. &nbsp;The fried egg on top was also a nice touch. &nbsp;The roast potatoes on the side was also really good. &nbsp;It&#8217;s probably the best way to cook potatoes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Chiemsee#5897602456172512434" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-qF1LHiVaBeo/Udh-L-KiRLI/AAAAAAAAOOw/tYr1xZLuwjY/s912/IMG_9360.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Chiemsee</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The weather was really good that day despite the 38°C heat wave weather and the visibility was really good.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The nice thing about Chiemsee is that it isn&#8217;t as famous of a travel destination for North Americans and so it makes it a lot less touristy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I flew to Europe this time with a friend, Edward, who was somehow able to take time off at the same time! It made the entire trip a lot more fun. The plane landed some time in the afternoon and at the airport, seeing all the German signage, somehow made me feel a bit at home. &nbsp;It seems I&#8217;ve gotten quite used to German signage everywhere.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was quite a walk from the main train station to the hostel (especially after getting lost a few times). &nbsp;If we had known there was a closer station at the convention center, we would have gone there instead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The hostel we stayed at was quite nice (but expensive). &nbsp;The breakfast was amazing too. &nbsp;It&#8217;s been a while since I had a giant bread roll with a huge stack of meat and cheese with yogurt and muesli on the side. &nbsp;It was so simple, but so delicious. &nbsp;Something I wish I could eat more of in Canada. &nbsp;I also got the chance to have German beer again. &nbsp;That was delicious too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We had one day to explore Frankfurt before we flew to Kiev, so we visited the old town and Senckenberg Museum. &nbsp;As with any German city, there&#8217;s probably an old town district. &nbsp;Frankfurt was no different, despite &nbsp;how modern the city is.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/FrankfurtAmMain02#5897666817722243058" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LYXvw4O8Ep0/Udi4uTnxV_I/AAAAAAAAPkc/n4RttG05pZY/s576/IMG_8730.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/FrankfurtAmMain02#5897666845846957122" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-JHfe2gpEoI4/Udi4v8ZObEI/AAAAAAAAPkk/gbohpSG5nL8/s576/IMG_8731.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, having been to many of these during my first Europe trip, seeing the old architecture just seemed pretty ordinary. &nbsp;There wasn&#8217;t anything exciting in it anymore.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Senckenberg Museum was a lot more interesting for only one reason. &nbsp;Dinosaurs.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/SenckenbergNaturmuseum#5897613234088937314" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh5.googleusercontent.com/-gAKdrE47OHc/UdiH_VCDh2I/AAAAAAAAOkc/W7Ore3L3l5E/s640/IMG_8711.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There was a lot more cool stuff there too like brains and preserved half-developed baby tigers inside jars. Preserved cross-sections of hearts or a brain with spinal cord laid out in a line. I think the cool factor was that everything was in a jar.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For me, that was as cool as Frankfurt got. The trip got way more exciting once we arrived in Ukraine.</p>
