<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The following blog post was written with the assistance of ChatGPT</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Returning to the vibrant city of Berlin, I embarked on a journey filled with intriguing sites, delicious flavors, and profound moments. As I wandered through the streets, I encountered both familiar landmarks and new experiences.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMHiVa3gVoKmGKjpMQfaSUk8rjTaLBJEvw9f5kT?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXR4vpktVyPXobaNQM0On_FuNCj3LbXXj13bS5ZbPx0eGRoo7yjuYJ6FjV2Jbe8vr46x_2CAaZy4BRKm4jchrUbrtLFgHcUkUmrZx5OD783jObLwvNa8MacBdkpgvGL4erqZVQVhdM9XbVUdzbyP7MHZA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s well known that Germany has a large Turkish population, and as a result, Turkish food is prevalent across the country, especially the döner kebab. We stumbled upon <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://www.terasrestaurant.de/" target="_blank">TERAS Berlin</a> and I can safely say it&#8217;s the best döner I&#8217;ve had. There is even a framed photo of Angela Merkel eating their döners!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipN-qN5LTvWWaEamTSYCwzbxL6whB1Ler3PEiLT-?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUFYeT0uVoBOlgcF-Cn__xqdUTM1amfV9NUBQrQDctQpFpEzUS4vxXU5rlV7jIIbh1OV72CAb5PoYG6Bdo21KiDivT7PITFZpRryggl2XFjYId7qXfOEkHhS21AlegflEuYN-hhl4rpEf7bZg_Grlb3Bw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We walked around the city, and eventually made our way to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Somehow the irregular placement of each concrete block gives the whole area an eerie feeling &#8211; something just doesn&#8217;t feel right, which is pretty apt for the purpose of the memorial.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipONRxkQWiBrs2-bi0Gcn47SuuB_uzRBycZqoINf?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUyBCIi_LqEA6gVEBER56itHWUZyzZ_21-IzioT-lGztPAHwrfDNyi_49uTIPNT4R8Ei0_syMRELKdY_hc91TQ2b9beEPhrL3p0G2dEi-tf82hQdNMNNGHoxXjIWqVWgRpj8_PlINMN4OFDiKlWoE8rDw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not far from memorial, there is a sign indicating the location of where Hitler&#8217;s bunker used to be. Nothing of the old bunker remains and the area is now apartment blocks and parking lots. If it weren&#8217;t for the sign, people would have forgotten all about it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next day we took a tour of the Reichstag. The Reichstag is the seat of the German parliament, and it has been since the founding of the Germany as a country.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipPsBu7AEvnWncIJOg5rooKT_tlRw6TuF1j0dTf8?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUBPphi8cwQfuyyczbeCJcRnufbni-6ZD9PF5U_Fcy6-LDsLfrro5XJeULRBoR3a5cWCp4VsCnZ9aUFG0lHS97aM7vcKyOTs8nREY2MxaVCeLst2BpHhs3kCNxJ6tjPz3T8jJmM_gtLoSdw0vJPmOmWdg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The dome at the top has since been rebuilt since the war. It&#8217;s replacement is a panoramic glass done that allows people to have a 360 degree view of the city. The glass represents the transparency in government.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipORh7i7pYsi77BTXyXmhjsV38-VWmGJyQQDoP-i?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUkF21u58050vuXRqP1Po6k3lh1pkNvxjJ63Tk3r7jKZsiu5_oazmfO6bJQAYOA8GGYI2g7kCMv2m8d4CwHAA4uZtOHkUXkCTc0F-m4aiZLuylw5ryal2JGNs8NXOC8z6LGAIL6xjXaEZtpnDz30RyqtA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first went to Berlin in 2011, I learned about the Ampelmann, the symbol used on pedestrian walking lights in East Berlin and other parts of former East Germany. I thought it was kind of a cool quirk of Berlin, but now its popularity has exploded. There&#8217;s almost always an Ampelmann shop in every tourist district.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNHo-qVz7tQJQPtAo-FrDf11TlPtKxELnd5W1bu?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXJP2DmQEmj82Z1Ob4GSsDXFcC3mEalo5cHTqO2DmY20rTN9d3hbmAkItboJveoCdi-qdLjh_DPu9lKMDbKtSVXG-ouwJL8eVzMf2iPBHTmFByXbNX-EcFX8z3QrVHiMZ2bl9n8NroS763iO1qIzmHcNw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We visited the Rausch Chocolatier near our hotel. I always thought it was a chocolate shop targeted at tourists. But now knowing more about chocolate and having a better palate, I found that they do in fact do chocolate well. They still make the typical sugary kind, but also the single origin stuff with specified percentages of cocoa.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipOh6-KEihz9OQLbitrE7j6X4GAWhnAMn7-p_KCL?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXVAiOhCnHcK97s9h6dCM7PokPS1mEPtzSA3gVpioKZSQr6InemTXE412w6bzpVpb4AAEZ7JhLQZ87Kqcld7vUb1SH2rnrbfC7FoJ-lbQiNBVQCfl20HlRCPEIbnsBdYlc0AfVGX0h16D4IV3pJhFlqEg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nearby was the Gendarmenmarkt, normally a picturesque square bustling with activity. However, it was under maintenance during my visit. I guess this is typical of travelling during low season (February in our case) &#8211; this is the time to do maintenance on stuff.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNOxm41pThOv5hsu3DbHgit9z1FgE4UlTpv1oCk?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaVTOi-hb0rzjJtgv2JQ77e-oJa_heZ0nGF-4pWRz_nuSv36moX_gaXpKllV52BqE_pp50-a98XX7v0wJL3PvRTZFUH3tbKfRNekM5hJhTnyE4J9lCM3Rlz_lm3onARfxHHp6TU3gPLYWZeJ8YLIotnEhw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later, we made our way to Checkpoint Charlie, a legendary checkpoint in Berlin&#8217;s history. It was once a border crossing between East and West Berlin. It stands as a symbol of the Cold War era and the division of the city. Today, a replica of the guardhouse and a sign mark the historical site, attracting visitors who seek to understand Berlin&#8217;s past. It serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles endured by those seeking freedom and reunification.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMZ08IG83M3O_p9k-RbYnzfZvhNj7pnH2O8uh4V?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaVVL8p2Bfr-hEM8Ap48uWk26cIgv_5MN9oYW0acinsvMfTVajysMx-iCLOYUdJW2A1O3SgK63yqM_YWc4pOw_KeK_QN_S-vatqzwqzRXDwJhzAZkWYPbrQf2wxkvYVTvPlVy7WJ6VDGHVHjb_LeGqY_rA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Topography of Terror, we delved into the darker chapters of Berlin&#8217;s history, reflecting on the atrocities committed during the Nazi regime. It&#8217;s a free museum documenting the Nazi war crimes. The biggest surprise for me there was seeing so many of the perpetrators of the crimes either committed suicide or were handed short sentences, which felt like they were let off easy considering what they did.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipM0UNs9l9nGIvUu0M1bR3FBGTmRXejhG8PwWN3R?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXP2zYGnv3h2yeGu3f_BzCeI4c7i577ljJkiqFvsKpMoN83gG93_KNTtuytJYeM_4G6bMUBZ9LYmpTnCtrvy22K1INZJ3HjYcA7d6HVa1Z2pWOmWReg0jQ05A2bBG8zTmsHx-oQI6S03sfPNcaNIRMmdg=w1635-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to finding the best döner, I&#8217;ve found the best currywurst &#8211; at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://www.curry61.de/" target="_blank">Curry61</a>. Currywurst is a beloved German street food delight. A juicy sausage is generously slathered with a zesty curry ketchup and sprinkled with aromatic curry powder. The result is a harmonious symphony of savory, tangy, and slightly spicy notes for the palate. Each bite of the sausage releases juices, mingling with the vibrant sauce to create an explosion of flavour.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNODeoFwlV5VSQoCbqmkzjcvdY6EcmQxD3tvsgS?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXJNGgBIYFYHPtfExX1cxXZvPbvgL71iIdDWM927JaksEIiDtfdERtPtbGvunHzatRMPG6gKqYt5lDH_57c6SURWOqHVnFdKbjH0laXNG2hSrZNSsM-wgXZNaCfEmPuOwabAKanmvI-lopOg_pnZqBTYA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the rain, we visited the Berlin Wall Memorial. It stands as a reminder of the division that once existed. This solemn site encompasses preserved segments of the wall, offering a tangible connection to the past. As we walked along the memorial, we could see the stark contrast between the barren death strip and the vibrant cityscape beyond. People can still buy pieces of the Berlin Wall &#8211; apparently there was so much of the wall that they can sell these pieces for years.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipOg1YExlk_nOEpceh6CxIF5aGHde5MQ8c5fNqpv?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaUooiOonehmzTY5RLEilPVaEdW9mphoB4DISyaKIJ4rbk-tYnd0KcIT7tMlKtWkT-oc6_p-ePcIkHhy8-nOmqawrQQXhlSH39lZ0DZzKtBxvdkYVxI1EkWrVFDPCDM9cG12g5GW2ThROijrQrecdh6syA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Totally by chance, that morning, I saw a news post about a destroyed Russian tank parked in front of the Russian Embassy in Berlin &#8211; we had to see it. This bold and symbolic protest highlighted the ongoing tensions and conflicts surrounding the Ukraine War. It&#8217;s a brutal reminder to the Russians that what they were doing in Ukraine isn&#8217;t working. This showed me that visiting places isn&#8217;t just about the tourist attractions, but also the zeitgeist that influences them. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMsT9xsQr3iJpHOyAnt47BvNKFmb64XpQ_anLVz?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXnzg6_Rb5z8LUIynZrGgKJ3OMcjit2C6fQ39Ob6vZrPbPCqkTZhBkAhf6RheC7RT5H0Pis9Pb4qBMAtAeNyO5En8j6KQIB6f1KvEvYXHd0fPtT2s4DrNfl_YQauAWT1bRXDQclBmNTrVxumljpRQl4Rw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another piece of the zeitgeist is seeing more and more electric car stores popping up everywhere &#8211; this time from a Chinese brand called Nio in the shopping district of Kurfürstendam. It feels as if tons of these companies are coming out of the woodwork now that Tesla is so big. It&#8217;s also one of the many luxury stores in the Kurfürstendam. The neighbourhood epitomizes the city&#8217;s cosmopolitan flair. Lined with luxury boutiques, trendy cafés, and bustling shops, it is a haven for shoppers and fashion enthusiasts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipPmSYRgsyoBa4Ma7HYhF5mlGc0374_lJVv8O6W7?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXvUDwhBrTnxsj20U1uuDVbcZtQUq5x56WnkNPJw-6ry_pAOlxhQv9xrj5hMyuTljMltkXSvJZcR9YwuYXViImcnNCkOBkdTcZt_9CBurb-S_OTQLsv2qWi42Mvj8J4yMEsjs22hw38yspkIfpGm1QDeA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the end of the day, word had spread and now a giant crowd gathered around the destroyed tank in front of the Russian embassy. People all over the city came out to show their support of Ukraine.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipN9BJ8-qxIfz2BMVD-JX4mwXx3bIH8x6miB6p8t?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaX46IG03BUymIY_XdFdhBI3f32RrZMVGgcOTOscQP2RcAXgvl4kshFg4wSCXNNe2CLZ5LvLizmqV0hSHKCLj8eHFm_motZPLBPHFWhlnvVWtEuX-CJcXswuTAGBogVPppbcv8bxHwEWpOgq3hE7Izow_Q=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The protest continued at Brandenburg Gate. By then a whole stage was set up with someone at the mic calling out for peace and justice. It was quite a sight to behold. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At that moment, it occurred to me that the Ukraine War is a lot closer to the people in Berlin than it is to people like us who live in North America.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipOgKKaDvZVboLH0xQ0kf0c_e0icsw7GoHTl87Z_?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaVfZyHXaqGMQjLiqQ-i0UsVoCRdMU99WWr8Ust7ZIvwAxRepoJ4vorBGtjeQXDO4A_e3nnJOTD2fwE2BQLGNOQrJLXkBe2N9OXNWk3XS_ReC05OcsK0TJGB9QCyESoxCbxuYuVA6gQpZLmlusBaOVmLjg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On our last day, we visited Museum Island. Museum Island is a cultural treasure trove, a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses an extraordinary collection of museums and art galleries. From the impressive Pergamon Museum to the Neues Museum&#8217;s ancient Egyptian artifacts, each institution showcases a unique aspect of history, art, and culture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipNHeWxtGK8gM4DJWmbuUCjr0ZdjbS1arfFoB7wM?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaXrB4I8DKdAKqH5PwGVVrphUqrWchDtZGD6hNKC09Kym2XAzP6N2ATgTmSeglZhe08l6bQzgzukHNiqdl-k6OwjX9n1cuAWiSdJ5ev_nSkQYUmy5iKi0uRjdHuccKDAmAe_YxT8rytuFo_hBrBFFLSAEw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also on Museum Island is the Berlin Cathedral, a majestic architectural marvel. By random chance, entry that day was free. We got to see its magnificent domed structure, adorned with intricate details, as it dominates the city&#8217;s skyline. The cathedral&#8217;s significance extends beyond its religious importance, as it is also the dynastic tomb of the House of Hollenzollern, the former royal family of Germany. Unfortunately, the tomb was under renovation, so we could not visit it.</p>

</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow" style="flex-basis:66.66%">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A short walk further, we reached Alexanderplatz, the bustling heart of Berlin. It&#8217;s a cool area showing the remnants of the former East Berlin, but otherwise, I didn&#8217;t find what was so enticing of a place to go except that it&#8217;s picturesque aside from visiting the Fernsehturm, which didn&#8217;t exactly align with my interests.</p>
</div>
</div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipMDxSnRCIce3iRmDW90EcWmldj6hK3Wz8jfTF_e?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaU-BH2nObxfPnrAjQv8lUFSDNg2z-KO6QmHfTbv3d7tlodgy8uuZOdc9CiWSVcXz46b0C7FlD5URgs1KlqHqIHQIBm9DDuj9n33XrLt_Tn5XQFj_8rVXpHA723KU-iJrH9C-jpMichg1xJft6YWALIX6A=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The East Side Gallery, a living testament to freedom and artistic expression, stretches along a remaining section of the Berlin Wall. This open-air gallery showcases a captivating collection of murals created by artists from around the world. Each artwork reflects the hopes, dreams, and struggles of a divided city and the triumph of unity. Originally, it was painted by artists after the opening of the Berlin Wall, but now different sections of the wall get routinely repainted to show the zeitgeist of our society.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q/photo/AF1QipP52HmLSNJZUhtdKwDZ1A6XgQIA4Rr4lRzRYN82?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AJFCJaU3YyhoVueWghMrttn63WnItiTwk8AULDKWVXrLut3qQjaX5ql59d9UcRmSfw3ilJQA810njuMSF-pmkhaF1GaATLC5Na8gqeSN3h_g5vYcSnI4L1ZVgKqto12MfBo8fhyJhLN9GfkPHMg6467EJZbEYQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our last destination was Markthalle IX. This historic market hall has been transformed into a bustling food destination, where local vendors showcase their artisanal products and delights. While it had lots of stalls ranging from produce to specialty cheeses, baked goods, and international cuisines, it seemed to cater mostly to tourists (it&#8217;s also expensive). It was also super crowded and grungy and not exactly the type of place I wanted to be at.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">See more of Berlin <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMsFAAHmWOJ-0zAuSNS7SIRCVDM6Jb1FPI9ykg4q6c6XmLRiarbYKlvym-MS62u9Q?key=a3F2WXJmSWZ3Y21nMy1mYlhSYnV6VXVDd3NTT1lB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Heidelberg</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Heidelberg probably has the most picturesque old town in the entire Germany. Out of all the views I&#8217;ve seen in Germany, this is one of the best.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The view is from the ruins of a castle that was destroyed during the Thirty Years War (17th century). I believe the old town is mostly in the Baroque style.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For breakfast, we had a very traditional German pastry, known as a Berliner. It&#8217;s similar to a doughnut, but without the hole, and it has a jam filling on the inside and powdered sugar on top. They&#8217;re super delicious and not insanely sweet like a lot of American doughnuts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For lunch, we had more traditional German street foods. The top of the bottom image is currywurst, cut up sausage with curry ketchup on top. The flavour is a very savoury sausage with a slight sweet and spicy zing of curry. The bottom of the image is a bratwurst in a breadroll with mustard. Everything about this is better than the American hot dog. Better sausage to bun ratio, better bread, better sausage, and better mustard. And of course, fries are seasoned with mayonnaise instead of ketchup.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After lunch, we drove up the hill across the river from the old town and visited an old ampitheatre. Why is this amptitheatre interesting, you might ask? It&#8217;s actually a relic of the Nazi period for holding propaganda performances.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main allure of Heidelberg itself is its picturesque views both in the old town and up on Heidelberg castle. Visitors can easily enjoy this by strolling through the old town and making their way up to the castle (there is also a tram), which are main attractions of the city.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Zweibrücken</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Heidelberg, we drove to Zweibrücken. It was a slight detour from Luxembourg, where we were actually trying to go, but we had read about a cool observatory decorated like R2D2, so we thought we&#8217;d check it out! It would have been cool to look through the telescope &#8211; after all the sky was completely clear of any clouds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From there we continued our drive to Luxembourg.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Luxembourg</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We crossed the border into Luxembourg at dusk and stopped by the town of Schengen. This is the place where the Schengen Agreement was signed &#8211; the agreement that removed the hard borders between its European member states.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Normally, it&#8217;s possible to walk across to the island to see the small exhibit that discusses the Schengen Agreement, but we were super surprised to see the river at such a high tide (it did rain a lot the past couple of days). On the right of the picture, there&#8217;s a little shrub, street signs and flagpoles poking out of the water. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the time we reach Luxembourg City, it was nighttime. To our surprise, the city looked deserted even though it was only 19:00. People walking on the street appeared drunk. There was even a guy taking a leak in the street without even trying to do it in an alley!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 194</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As one of the largest port cities in Europe, we got a chance to go to Hamburg to see its beauty.&nbsp; We went there by car and saw much of the historical part of the city as well as took a ferry ride along the coast of the Elbe River and walked along the city&#8217;s canals.&nbsp; The weather was pretty much raining for the whole time we were there.&nbsp; As my friend put it, “when you go to Hamburg, plan for rain”.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Drive</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We left work at around noon to pick up our rental car.&nbsp; It took us a bit longer than we expected because we had to go grocery shopping so we could have lunch and dinner in the car on the way there for our 6 hour drive (or so we thought).&nbsp; The drive ended up taking 8 hours because of a stau (traffic jam).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The car we got from the rental company was a Mercedes-Benz C220.&nbsp; When we got into the car, it smelled like new and being in such a new car for a road trip was undoubtedly awesome. We only got this car because it was the cheapest car with automatic transmission available.&nbsp; I guess the Renault that we got last time was booked for today.&nbsp; I wish that I got the chance to drive it though.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipNhW7CcjkDf3f89MS3XvQRjccUZ9vFmw1Gk25qz?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEW458IXCrRssxPBPhTpP0F3UCTB82i5HDmvqF6Wgx-852cBm0kRstTaUk3KqGaedFiWMOEnJtiZzujevitEyK0jnpMjoPcKESn4atZSjKhykmg64FPw19nGDOXHcSBpppUt8ejUFZfEJEGb7xDQZac3Ow=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the way there, we got to see a lot of the German countryside (as anyone typically does when going from one major city to another).&nbsp; On the grass plains and knolls, we saw countless villages, farms, vineyards, and the like.&nbsp; We even saw farms of wind turbines and solar panels.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a few hours of driving, we stopped a few times.&nbsp; We stopped at a rest area and at this middle-of-nowhere village.&nbsp; The GPS guided us off the highway and into this village just to avoid the traffic jam.&nbsp; For the first third of the trip, I sat in the front while three of my friends had to squish together in the back.&nbsp; When it was my turn to sit in the back, I didn’t really feel the discomfort while I was reading on my friend’s Kindle.&nbsp; I ended up going through about 90 pages of Band of Brothers.&nbsp; Maybe the book was so interesting that I just completely zoned out of the real world for a little bit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We reached our hostel at around 9 at night and parked the car.&nbsp; After moving our stuff into our room, we began our sightseeing tour of Hamburg.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Rathaus</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At around 11, on a cloudy day with a large and persistent ocean breeze (it was super cold even with my jacket on), we showed up at the meeting point for the walking tour – a Starbucks.&nbsp; This tour company receives some sort of sponsorship from them.&nbsp; Our tour guide, didn’t look like a German, and when he spoke, a clear Northern USA accent came about – apparently, he had been living in Germany for some time.&nbsp; He led us to the first destination of the tour – the Rathaus (city hall).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other side of the river, miles of cranes lined up the shore, ready to unload any cargo on ships that docked.&nbsp; What we were seeing was the second largest port in Europe, the largest being the one in Rotterdam.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Bar District</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Supposedly, this area is known as the bar district (at least that’s what we called it).&nbsp; Despite its name though, there was a really tight concentration of bars here, but the cost of beer was even more than Stuttgart.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipOsJ9YBSH6hf4LxUITxukQgjOVgM7W9Uountpqn?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWIrEWxOuB89N14Zr6WN_Baoq14C3cDrdZ2vGHZxSmOklsHIUUH-uQSEuuIz982oJLiUTOXEUfr2uwg9aGxukpbbtWVgCo0PAnGYb1Ijtl0iH47V7596vrMfHgxLA-4NzKn55uCuxeaDnHVlB-qgXZKQA=w1226-h919-no" alt="" width="840" height="630"/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the bar/restaurant, I ordered an apple strudel to help combat my hunger from walking around all day instead of going for beer like everyone else did (although I did have a little bit).&nbsp; The apple strudel I got wasn’t that expensive and it looked and tasted amazing.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Fish Market</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next morning, we went to the fish market – Hamburg is famous for it.&nbsp; However, we got there a little late, so by the time we got there, a lot of the places were closing down.&nbsp; As a last ditch attempt to sell more stuff, a lot of shops there started giving people really good deals on food like selling a whole box of fruit for only 1 euro.&nbsp; I would have bought it if I could eat all of that.&nbsp; A pile of garbage behind all these people went to show how much food they sold that day.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipPWh7OYjkCEUQ69-NoZtfKXLXjv16LCNHuvYCSG?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVSf6jYLcyY0E5oqROXp6I8lBFuczBmDJ-rlLZ3IXpu5pzQD1xilboV1H-ToQygSQA17eREiHvsJnIaFFk3LEZJpskhVwCDNmKr6sNvLVyCOP1pRUcFLR-v0KrbHMnt5srtl662MOymbna9BGCHgNsFBg=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although the market by named says “fish”, people sold all sorts of things in addition to fish.&nbsp; Many sold bread, cheese, and various types of meat.&nbsp; I wondered if I’d see something similar to the <a href="https://henrypoon.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/the-hamburg-fish-market-and-the-german-wurst-man/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wurst man</a> I saw a while back, but I didn’t.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The market even had an indoor beer garden with a live band playing.&nbsp; It was quite a nice place.&nbsp; If only we were there early enough.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Driving Home</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I probably should have known, I could not resist the urge to drive.&nbsp; I ended up taking the wheel for about half an hour and managed to get the Benz up to 200 km/h.&nbsp; While driving at that speed though, the steering wheel was really shaky.&nbsp; I felt that if the car ran over a pebble or something like that, the car would just plunge into the side of the road.&nbsp; If it wasn’t for that, I would have reached the car’s top speed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before I started driving though, we stopped at a rest area.&nbsp; When we took a good look at the back seat of the car and noticed a giant mess of crumbs from all our snacking during the trip.&nbsp; I don’t think I had any to do with that since I never considered myself to be a messy eater.&nbsp; Just as we finished commenting about the messiness of the car, one of my friends had apparently stepped on dog poop and got it in the car.&nbsp; It smelled horrible.&nbsp; He even got it onto another friend’s pants.&nbsp; He cleaned it up right away, but a faint smell of the poop lingered in the car for the rest of the journey.&nbsp; It’s a shame that the car rental company gave us a car smelling like new just so we’d give it back with a bad smell.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN_XqGejb5vvVv2MiWG5elKVJTJVW5hz0boeCFvx-JltwU5VsXTGF54FYfO_pT73Q/photo/AF1QipPWTZrJW3BeoGoOd_pUAK5NfrPAdMtMdWL1PLQN?key=cF95ZFFrZHZjMDlMcFcxMjloTFJJQm1fZ054VXhn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWWNlYE5AaPnplSHWPO9hnBG5ppHhGmDVKOuhHmTvsBnxYZM1_LwIthiuOzHH1LmQj17uw0g4PNSCHHOZZYNWpf_z0cjjkYnB8OtKlmMrg_uEi4DRECFlvzIVnZO_Nd62HW6ZzQihrsZd30W0QwggukSA=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In another rest area near Frankfurt, we stopped for a bite to eat and went up to the observation tower there to look at the Frankfurt skyline.  That was a nice sight except for the giant high voltage line that blocked part of the view.  By then we were already pretty much 3/4 of the way home.  I continued reading Band of Brothers on the Kindle and managed to get through about 65% of the book in total.  We got back into Stuttgart at around 7:30 in the evening, returned the car, and went home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 109<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also known as the spring festival, the Fruehlingsfest takes place in Stuttgart in the middle of April and early May. The city sets up an entire amusement park in an area in Bad Cannstatt filled with roller coasters, and an assortment of rides. Every year, the amusement park gets packed up after the festival ends. Seems not worth the effort to me. It looked and felt a lot like the Fair at the PNE in Vancouver where parents brought their children. But despite its German style, like the Bavarians, the bars served a maβ of beer as well. Many stayed in the beer tents of the Stuttgart Hofbraeu drinking nonstop and stood on the benches waving the giant beer mug around. Others linked arms and danced. The atmosphere felt super German. Although in Munich, my friends and I visited The Hofbraeuhaus, the atmosphere felt more tourist-like, which took away from the real German part of it. Not many tourists visited the Fruehlingsfest. My friends and I all drank a maβ of beer (and more later on) to stick with the tradition. I went to the Fruehlingsfest with some friends from Bosch and others I met from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Ironically though, most of the people we went with came from Canada or USA, with one coming from France and another from Brazil.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While all the parents and their children stayed outside playing on the rides, everyone else stayed in the beer tent to drink the day away. We stayed in the beer tent for about an hour before we walked around the park. I went home at around 10 pm, after an eventful day of taking part in the German beer culture.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 49</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being in a different country, it&#8217;s pretty much a necessity to try out the local cuisine. However, since I&#8217;m not rich enough to try really unique and high quality German food all the time, I&#8217;ve kind of failed in this regard. Luckily for me though, I get to try different types of German from the cafeteria at work. But then again, it&#8217;s not quite the same thing, but I&#8217;ll try my best. And since the German food I&#8217;ve been eating comes from the cafeteria, I didn&#8217;t think it seemed appropriate at the time for me to take pictures, so the pictures I won&#8217;t be from me, but from Wikipedia (the best source for all knowledge).</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Bratwurst</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pretty much everyone who lives in a western country knows what bratwurst is. In short, it&#8217;s a German-style sausage. It&#8217;s different from North American sausages in the fact that a whole lot better. I haven&#8217;t got a clue at the differences in the what parts of the cow/pig they use, but it tastes damn good. I eat bratwurst pretty much every morning.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Kaiserschmarrn</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Simply speaking, Kaiserschmarrn is pretty much a German/Austrian pancake. People in Austria eat it for dessert. When it comes to food, I rarely ask what it is made of. I just eat it, so I&#8217;m going to have to quote Wikipedia on this one to find out what it&#8217;s made of.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kaiserschmarrn is a light, caramelized pancake made from a sweet batter with flour, eggs, sugar, salt, and milk, baked in butter.</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wikipedia said it&#8217;s a dessert, but I ate this as my main meal. Personal taste I guess.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6b/Kaiserschmarrn-mitPreiselbeeren.jpg/800px-Kaiserschmarrn-mitPreiselbeeren.jpg" alt=""/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Maultaschen</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maultasche are a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swabia" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Swabian</a> food, which is like ravioli. It&#8217;s got pasta on the outside and meat on the inside. Wiki says its got different kinds of meat, spinach, bread crumbs, and onions with flavoring from various herbs and spices. It wasn&#8217;t super delicious (but still good), and doesn&#8217;t look super delicious, but it&#8217;s worth a try just to get a taste of Swabian culture.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/33/Maultaschensuppe.jpg" alt=""/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Spaetzle</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also a Swabian specialty food, Spaetzle is a type of noodle. I was explicitly told by a colleague of mine not to call this pasta. Apparently Swabians like to make a distinction between Spaetzle and pasta. To go with the Spaetzle, I had lentils and sausages. It tasted okay I guess (if you&#8217;re Swabian and reading this, don&#8217;t hate me). It&#8217;s not one of my favorites, but for those who want to eat Swabian food, this is something to try.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8c/Linsen_Spaetzle_2.jpg/800px-Linsen_Spaetzle_2.jpg" alt=""/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Semmelknoedel</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A southern German and Austrian specialty food, semmelknoedel is made of mostly bread. That probably doesn&#8217;t make the food sound delicious, but when I ate it, i thought it was good. It&#8217;s not super fancy or anything, just something unique that people in Germany eat.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b9/Semmelkn%C3%B6del.jpg/607px-Semmelkn%C3%B6del.jpg" alt=""/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is way more German food that I ate since I&#8217;ve been here, but unfortunately most of the time I eat the food, I have no idea what it is or that I can&#8217;t remember the name. Oh how inconvenient it is to not be able to read/speak German. As I try more and more different kinds of food, I&#8217;ll be sure to post more.</p>
