<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our third day of the trip landed on a Sunday, which meant most businesses would be closed, so this made it a good day to do most of our driving. Today we would drive from Dunkirk in the north of France, visit the Maginot Line and Verdun in between, and then end in Strasbourg, in eastern France, 600 km away.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1200" height="675" src="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?resize=1200%2C675&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4918" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day3.png?resize=171%2C96&amp;ssl=1 171w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Originally, we had planned on visiting Sedan too. This was where the Germans made their initial breakthrough into France that eventually led to the French surrender. We intended to go to the Museum of the Last Cartridge, the local museum there, thinking that it was about the World War II battle, but actually it was about the Battle of Bazeilles during the Franco Prussian War (which I had never heard of before). In the end, we didn&#8217;t have time for it anyway so it was okay that we didn&#8217;t go.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Maginot Line</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not far from Sedan, was a preserved portion of the Maginot Line in northeastern France, known as the Ouvrage La Ferté. The Maginot Line was a series of defensive fortifications stretching along the French border from Luxembourg to Italy built after World War I to protect France from a future German invasion. The location at the Ouvrage La Ferté saw the heaviest fighting during the Battle of France in World War II. It eventually was overwhelmed by German forces and its entire garrison was killed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s exterior still shows the damage from the battle and grass has grown over the craters that were once there. It is possible to tour the inside of the bunker, but it is only available to large group tours.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Driving through the area, it&#8217;s pretty common to still see bunkers on the side of the road.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPylgM8Qw6H9r2brCeAiFKgFgYb80tvL3VMzt8-jw-SYrNyXWOsV2HwzTSnCFl_-A/photo/AF1QipPUL9Js7f3OezBx6XGH04UEkVCzFAOhDrlf1jmG?key=OXJHaUdVMWx4eXRSQjNZX1VpOXJZY1UzR2E2OVdB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/W6hFkyHYJjLrfux8CbG6aftH-GZ0vbe7Q7qSjSZdlqZh3Nm5W4k8_3poK3G6cga5Njk4n8k8uQieW4aacZDtmHkKr9Kqm-7YJngHPbdnDrLPcLpt9f-0vNsWtjKcEM0WTY4odLknO3pDsbLskEO4axCkE6pLBo3GMl4AFMqsWMB6jMVvVq9y2Gak_c6pVPZEATFVE5nDlXEEdo1DnJz_X6nBI4kpOQyQgkpSiIRjhtivPGSEGbQujV-X0tdoutDPIP1nTPb2m3nWmnU0kNU1bw5wunHQdoYE0MlJj-6cSw7fubfBoCRqwY0yCyhmulk_mLbm3Nc-jOuuiZdyvifUHLW81ASNTdlFkVBkuvTrG-9hXSEGGZVjSzQNEat1jm4wDOVyikK-hfWyNmfUT_OOqhshDjLwtlLmuhBM9VPw4FB2NlPbyMFXLyLhd_TFl1AsbN83334uNZ2dcWZt1584AcDfkEQwS9My9wP9T5Rd2yuzpPKQP3ovrua8wnsMK18iUBFTda6uPrbjQzRanPii2CRli7AErmAZqVBpg0GDNo5g21HKXjVBH-vqm3U8Qhzq5hvIO58jEVr87TlEkF454i9N-cPiM7NND8YsFCSOU8cjZTvrdNQCfZ9kMAjaqyj5TTsdHTzMMCRcATAw3b2v2iORCPYe526x7mJjz7DNr1TXOawrRDEaFbPrwxfcxlkCYvV60EUF3pWXAFMKxr0zA-bxYHFgKqfqXB2tzAwkcv-p83p3oA=w1320-h743-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ouvrage La Ferté is in a pretty remote location, which makes sense considering it&#8217;s a defensive fortification, and because of the rain the night before, we ended up driving on some flooded roads, and even narrow farm roads that even Google Maps didn&#8217;t have a name for.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Verdun</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Ouvrage La Ferté, we drove to Verdun. Verdun was the site of another major battle in World War I, and to remember the fallen soldiers, a memorial containing their skeletal remains was constructed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unbeknownst to us, the ossuary was actually closed when we arrived, so we never got to go inside. We could only peek through the windows and see was a blurry view of stacks of bones. In front of the monument lies a military cemetery.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nearby the ossuary is the actual fort that played a role in the Battle of Verdun. The fort fell to the Germans without a fight since the French had abandoned the fort thinking that the fort would have been ineffective against the heavy artillery that the Germans were using. Eventually, the fort was recaptured.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The road leading up to the fort was interesting too because some of the old trenches were preserved. The zig zag of the trenches can still be seen. Its purpose was to ensure that shrapnel exploding inside the trench would be contained. A straight trench would have allowed a clear path for the shrapnel to fly through more of the trench.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The nice thing about driving in Belgium and the Netherlands is that the road quality is super good. There were hardly any potholes anywhere and the speed limits are higher than what I&#8217;m used to. The speed limit on most highways is 130 km/h in the Netherlands and is 120 km/h in Belgium, while where I am it&#8217;s 112 km/h (70 mph). The signage is super clear, albeit in Dutch/Flemish/French depending on where we were. Also, having a decent base in German and French vocabulary allowed me to guess the meanings on road signs, which was nice. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1280" height="720" src="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=1280%2C720&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4888" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?w=1527&amp;ssl=1 1527w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=171%2C96&amp;ssl=1 171w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our second day takes us to Oosterscheldekering, Ypres, and Dunkirk.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Oosterscheldekering (Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We began our day two heading back into the Netherlands, to a network of storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding. Large sets of doors can open and close to control the water flow coming in from the ocean. They&#8217;re important because most of the Netherlands sits a few metres above sea level or lower, and thus are prone to flooding. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Oosterscheldekering" width="1280" height="720" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/28LxAcynF8Y?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we drove in the area of Oosterscheldekering, we encountered a lot of windmills spinning noticeably in the wind. And I wondered where all the old traditional windmills went, as in the ones with a tower made of brick with four rectangular fan blades . Netherlands has a stereotype of having a lot of them. We barely saw any of them and then it occurred to me that most of them were probably upgraded to use modern technology.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ypres</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our next destination, Ypres, is known for the many battles that occurred there during the First World War, where the Germans introduced chemical weapons in the battlefield in the form of poison gas. During the course of the war, the town was destroyed, mostly by artillery fire.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPdQfgJH63a783DNAzB1UMRs9eRv2ZLaYc-C8gVoQmHrtLElma5Pydyf4leBOEXBw/photo/AF1QipMQCSxpy8mt9paq_KZX9JnaXPg1FQ5OK1ND8aWo?key=ZUViTU1qWWN0bmxwZlpPUXpvQkRvVVFsZFYwQTZB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/la1pEdzxNsjNq_5-mzf58PUIFpTlmOWN4cGJvfXCH7TlIdBooN6DJCZ-euUgGb2bWr6Acy3ie3lTwHtWsuE6Uw0A9ZNZGwFDHkkboyl7DzgsUii8MVhz8NPaHUin6xtOCWYLxT6O6c75rK9zvCnSzvW3wrgaFVoM3sxumOXipU9dpsFzKADsYN1jyUv7wbW0aqNmJPRQ1lbf1gBSYMcflFt_BfepCebop7E6TFcLNiA_mkPRog9iLc3br0eF7Hqx8TjP_rNQmk9pwKqzTp6BKShDbizzw4qohZLup34OXrP0s_kU6mjQ-Sg1oUjQoTTlt1L0p-BFvIKmrelFwK57H6TJS-DjSAoqrVBureTdYqTVqZPXBHMb5-zLhvvqzdSORX_LUrXEo8Go_OQhfysjnFQmpg5neDwPmfhkCjP9aDjWIxutBkSqQQ25SbUI9lUJ7KqLBbozWnsTaiIQFPZgwT_3kPBZqoR0FO2vItEEN-pn1F6euFyuJpewzBpWjIbdOdNld3u2UGJtwdxxtjrA-8PUJtQaFnfFp0Kx98HYTbnyE2bIY1rpNv_NF9rNbKUsrmtc-8cmoNHsXbZduHjtegAm1jXDp9G8gvHOefYd8WzUFwZoxtFB6Nz62GPquAYFafmjYJEZ1SPE7UUiFlqZpmWlf9TIYW_spjCePPVNhSVwi54ERqZmfpkNzHvaXrnPfBLPKaJuO91sevE2KYY6aBNlyHO7KLxzjzNbWv1MZXMHfl8wKg=w1320-h743-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The town was rebuilt after the war using German war reparations, with the main square following the original design as closely as possible. The In Flanders&#8217; Fields Museum (the big building in the above picture) is a museum dedicated to the First World War.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Dunkerque (Dunkirk)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our final destination for the day was the French port city of Dunkirk, known for the role it played during the evacuation of Allied forces from France. The Germans had achieved a breakthrough in France and had surrounded the bulk of Allied forces around Dunkirk. The German airforce was tasked to destroy these forces, so that the Germany army could conserve its ground forces for other operations, but the Germans failed to destroy the Allied forces and over 338000 soldiers were successfully evacuated to Britain.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That night, the locals were having a festival, called the &#8220;Bal du Chat Noir&#8221;, probably loosely translated as &#8220;The Black Cat Ball&#8221;. It&#8217;s so obscure that as of this writing, an English Wikipedia article for this festival doesn&#8217;t even exist. The French Wikipedia describes it as a festival to celebrate the opening of the carnival season (i.e. the Christian Carnival), and that it&#8217;s local to Dunkirk.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPTPqwaY3LnXeU4ZVmq1gSmsCvqBMixpJNIwJI2CvS9tcnSvPjdXxJkBcpylfA4oQ/photo/AF1QipPtJSr2h6yQsZpLawKw_GXtFsUcblpbAIYCWJys?key=emdXRkVDM2xYV0NzYTl5Q3phcHRuVGVlN0RsbXln" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/HQoG0qB123jjBYaTfRInoOx3bINaHB1A7ppkrzPL-DCcsAnuDv6Q-uu13z4FYhGK5kFSzoCpLKpbBMcDQA4PQihoW1VFUnoxzU9890T13j24hFj__yJi3rCjXF8hbTUJK-Xk8BKD0uyH-IBMVpMTLAXHaQeuzbHv10MpkuTWsvxwoM_UkwsFaPQEYer3Ky89bAvjOEscXXlhmp1B7HEd4e4Mayj1DM7drnPwBRwUlIauGQtpjctMJwEJLivMXwH9A2Mm7XWskr3s6gIW6kkq0xR9x1-7zwkpyLeO8CWqMGwla0o96r9hu-VV-YT9Q840nPFPsle7SflYaBdfhu93OjADY3C7WlScqX3CYLnxuMWr2BrPIkNUm02mb9GYTpVJYmNfKZiKrB_msnZ5lssMSVMVR8zIyw8U0fLzTy54lWJLw-uZszgiSUItlnOYEd22eg12mwSx-qY3jippIbVl2wOA10VfCv2MJC_pbTjpeCsPNC7QvdyqJDjyI_eKWBzKiTsvMJ93okaftThlBR4fK38cr7nFjlrP6u5kMdJvoViF9vZBoz49VB2pAG9MCc-281ZvLNmmf8cwimhyWye-46WdRzKWqGmhlocnS30rhSDhSMXEb1HDfyx82XINtU4UX_MOYDWdzuYu_uacMHg50vp7lx2HFz8wKvR0mGa_6pwmrlN3g7N-rSO4FLBcVkL66eAQSKkTmbOLRS6Q4073Kc4_TyZG96X0r0byJB7oPx7guvkbTw=w1320-h743-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From what I can tell, it&#8217;s kind of like the Carnival in Cologne, where people party in the streets dressed up in costumes. There&#8217;s no shortage of reasons for people to party!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stay tuned for day 3!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first arrived in India, I landed in Delhi. The guard asked, &#8220;you are going to Meerut?&#8221; in a tone that showed he was puzzled why a foreigner like me would ever go to such a place. Upon hearing that I was there to visit a friend, he understood.</p>

Within the lotus flower, structure has almost no rooms &#8211; it&#8217;s mainly a giant atrium filled with pews. It&#8217;s unique construction has won it many architectural awards and is one of the most visited buildings in the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The India Gate is like the Indian version of the Arc de Triomphe. It&#8217;s a memorial to the 70000 soldiers of the british Indian Army who died various wars (The Great War among them). Like the Arc de Triomphe, an eternal flame for the Unknown Soldier burns.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As someone who really enjoys eating meat, this place is like heaven. Imagine eating barbecued skewers seasoned with Indian spices. It works like a buffet, but with two parts, the &#8220;appetizer&#8221; which is the skewers, and the &#8220;main course&#8221;, which is the standard Indian food, i.e. curries, naan bread, etc. But the appetizer is so good that I would just only eat that. But of course while in India, one must try everything!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The food in India is so different from what I normally eat, it&#8217;s pretty much impossible for me to tell what anything is. At best, I can tell what&#8217;s chicken, lamb, chickpeas, paneer, etc., but I have no idea what spices are in what dish. But it doesn&#8217;t matter, because everything tastes good. Despite what a lot of people think, not all Indians eat with their hands.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxrQqUgXmKhkD5Dvb2DVIf81tvj6l0koy3fJ7R2rF26AsKQex0zP9abI7LahIUlg/photo/AF1QipMbVVsamOZU1hHQ4pWCqMw_vGMllpj9B9Gn1fxg?key=RlktS1NTbnh4N0FHXzlDWTNPOHNhMUNUYV9xTVl3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/U_mY_q5Q566gDDm7cWWKykv79ZMixCtmwcgzqEe6ltaY0m35yS__HH1B5HylnLjDmO3hU6VB3mkpKFLZpNyTqV6ep0GXr1FCGnUIazIAfBhxd4Lc2LniH_0pU4rTG-dTVmvYIaTZv8IEYBgC6GKgQ3uLhM8x-h4yr6Djt1vcFSA8vnUuo5C3MTrwC2cQBBb_HycgCaN-ZJX2Tl7UcJDhBcy9ZcXZX_ILovovFHKVvc_9cK9DfPNnhlSlzvk8U8eqhJOG9vJrAHWTCDszutQsUAElv9qrsphYK_BFGmkjG1Fi77sFMUhasGnM8IJpV5SbsFerXClL4gcWQEoq4bUaNhKLfZt8AN5mut7hENbwrqWSYxDplvonT7n0d3KMxmT6PiFRC2gStgHUSItnBw1v5jmhOP2HwSXPc4fHm4M3MAjKR84w3hm0b-QlXmTCLR7KvCO_uvyy142Mhs4UszBVm-yyAtuqLaqZMc5eDvV0dLkIK0I4pe_gnuyEyecPoTRzlXsyMdCRzocEER-PHBypI80qjjQdGD91HSVBPpLBBZA6KP9hSJTozoQLHM288bQXGrb0iIpcUDAji_IdnQ5U14mWfarkcdTaEqZHc4VXLlm5bmSa8NstfcmUoQU_dzego4mRUK_iUT6I9L74j9yGQ7gsNv6HVjhRVY0dDrD3E8HaB1i84kMbRv7lOOFwFiv09Omwh3BGbi5ixH983HdzrtVxGZ-MPKB8zDKE359Z6lU9v0Zw=w1464-h824-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People don&#8217;t really follow driving rules here. This is us driving in the oncoming lane. Everybody honks, nobody follows lane lines, and when there&#8217;s heavy traffic everybody bunches up bumper to bumper with only a few inches between each car. Cars peek left and right to find space to try to get ahead, but the problem is when everybody does it, it slows everyone down. Big trucks have signs saying &#8220;horn please&#8221; to encourage people to honk as they pass because of their blind spots.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOjb-6DwUaA0dNH_of_mTv6eaOqKX-Ar8iA7mX03OSYK0E93OCyESet2xa0h3CRHw/photo/AF1QipNqdJvgCfVp8QLd6ubzsFjD-rPMCIafQ9UE3_ZP?key=dGtFcXpoaWl3Rm5laGdkQzN4UktGUkptR0ViYU5n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/BXrpHNl5Pe6aA8ChslERqf2Mdl3Twptf76wcd71NnBhCOdal6sGXMkQLoVFU4PDnNolNRNDAFc8yNrqt7u64ZjQORFWXMJgLR1I39Uk0rhFsYc22ifsjTjSNVrMdtJALah9xlmmWZ_dN_X_jbLUhbkRtUZvgN52JY2iYFCbQbSGZbNn9OKpR5AuUmAJkGYztFEfxo82cgBE-tro0WNNqSam0l2RQzJu9ovm-IRyOmBMrENDvqVgkHU5Fy93o1lhTfyNuOg8a7WIR3mnqZJ_FNjwY4MxNETVPaFfk3bQS8cHGJcyS1jlo_LGJRbEqe6W8_fopMmjfWTGHQxr124MiuXn9Ud8fVI6ejev2zqMMhGQ5GoeN8DAQKUnlNJ_pkZVE-LaFv_xhECS5MfSz_Huz6-rsjIYAA9UQTa9ERoZhmXxLfbxk8FqfLIiEihDvp9aEpd2gqHuEZ17rjFsOdwlSBa5Zw2lTffXxcd4_VotV4GCMrhAN1gr5Y2zHujmFOXmZOGjACj-V3eoU0npvYG_HNvKKulyst0zUYE3PN7-1m6f5gSn514T43cr-FWzHswQ8XEwYgPH3Y33hPR044hpCOmeQ09lO4r5LgeocMqfzQ5wfJhNeDj6P58kgekXPNr7lKn-P_msZEEbYuxGf5qYLzIM1BBKI4uHmWXL7m4JUErgQFjR4yGv8Pv-amLZsPxzxiwzqFAXIUM6GMBNo7A3ujgdl3UXv49Nyzvv1_95A6H-e2n6-=w1464-h824-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Occasionally, traffic can slow to a halt just because of some cows blocking the street. Or traffic can be slow because some local townspeople decided to pour their own concrete on the road to build a speed bump &#8211; because the city didn&#8217;t do it. Roads are bumpy pretty much everywhere. Freeways are slowly being built, but a lot of driving is still done on these patchy roads. Oh, and people pee on the side of the road on a regular basis.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buildings on the other hand range from giant mansions to literally five sheets of metal stacked together to form walls. The wealth gap is huge. Poorer neighbourhoods have ditches full of trash, while richer neighbourhoods have guards standing watch in the night. But despite having a big house, the power company is notoriously unreliable. Intermittent power outages happen on an almost daily basis, so those who can afford it have backup power in their homes. Some homes also have a water pump as a water supply for their home. It&#8217;s such a reversal from what people in the western hemisphere are used to.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 215</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Flight to Barcelona</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I woke up at around 3:30am to get ready for the flight to Barcelona.&nbsp; I had slept at around 10:30pm the night before in order to not feel absolutely terrible in the morning.&nbsp; We took the first train out to the airport at 4:40am and got there about an hour before our departure at 6:45am.&nbsp; While going through security, I forgot to take of my belt and because of that, the security personnel checked me with the metal detector wand all over the place.&nbsp; For some reason, he seemed to also have a huge suspicion that I was hiding something in my pants.&nbsp; Once he let me go, we were on our way.&nbsp; On the plane ride there, I tried by my best to take a nap, but this little kid cried for the whole duration.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Sagrada Familia</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After dropping off our stuff at the hostel, w went to the Sagrada Familia, an unfinished church that began construction in 1882.&nbsp; When I saw it, I thought it was really weird that the construction crew used modern cranes to build architecture of the old style.&nbsp; We tried to go inside, but there was a huge line up.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOWM5vJmvIy9pgAZ4t89onQw-c-5-27_GnrOWkO4zcRKfjIrTdK9v3Nwh9jDK4uAA/photo/AF1QipPhe5Kr1V9SOBdK8vYBUIo_ndXs0rzQm0qU9LQ-?key=ZUJKNDBEcWMxbGI5bmhsc2NOT29kaWlBa1dXUXN3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUTwwPsDsVJ8YzzkxcMcbJu3K2BOnS6FjKo1NvWSqlvd71ZwYAwfAiUZEe-APSsCUocWN3wmDNzWnGrqvNeZr-z9dmEUaiWMZMpTq4i90Sw3aGSc4aiTd1bVUdw07n3Fj9MQw_yKFN-kgRj1aOBQ2vgyA=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After wandering around town a little bit, we came across this market that sold all sorts of things.&nbsp; Apart from pretty normal items like clothing, vendors there sold N64’s, used power tools and even military regalia.&nbsp; A lot of that stuff was probably stolen.&nbsp; We walked around some more and then headed down to the beach.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOWM5vJmvIy9pgAZ4t89onQw-c-5-27_GnrOWkO4zcRKfjIrTdK9v3Nwh9jDK4uAA/photo/AF1QipMECTsvpjMmTOeYO6iitz5JldRe0fayH8Kunvjm?key=ZUJKNDBEcWMxbGI5bmhsc2NOT29kaWlBa1dXUXN3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEX9IwmVXxhM4nMmpn3toHcovvGVzNKPsnKVbqBN5lHUI3GpgYMr-ys3w0ym1hnWCWM1jshr5BdfK-wU3AzhFHjLp7iB6He6iWWbWOKf08EYy8C6Ootg6RCMDKKxbRI-zgMdWRNtmm2P-N9x2OHNSTGHHg=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Barceloneta</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area we were in, the Barceloneta, was a stretch of beach coastline looking into the Mediterranean Sea.&nbsp; It had the nicest beach water and sand – even better than what I saw in Volos.&nbsp; Looking around the beach, I learned that it was legal for women to sunbathe topless. It was actually quite prominent.&nbsp; The weather was really hot too – perfect beach weather I suppose.&nbsp;</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Walking Tour</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first destination in the tour was in the Gothic Quarter.&nbsp; We reached the memorial for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eulalia_of_Barcelona" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Eulalia of Barcelona</a>, a 13 year old girl that was brutally subjected to torture from the Romans for refusing to give up Christianity.&nbsp; She died from the 13th and final torture that involved her being put inside a barrel with blades shoved inside it and then having that barrel rolled down in incline.&nbsp; It is said that a dove flew out of her dead body as she ascended to Heaven.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next destination was the oldest synagogue in Europe (as opposed to the one in Prague, which is the oldest active synagogue).&nbsp; From the outside, it doesn’t look anything like a synagogue.&nbsp; It just blends in perfectly with the buildings around it and the building itself doesn’t have any valuable looking ornaments or decorations either.&nbsp; The only things that separate it from the other buildings is sign in Hebrew on the doorway and some signs for tourists to know that it’s there.&nbsp; In this Jewish district, the tour guide mentioned the expulsion of Jews during the Spanish Inquisition.&nbsp; I thought it was kind of amusing when I was caught by surprise at the mention of it – kind of like that quote from Monty Python.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOWM5vJmvIy9pgAZ4t89onQw-c-5-27_GnrOWkO4zcRKfjIrTdK9v3Nwh9jDK4uAA/photo/AF1QipPwrOi2-06ALhuGPVL-6Vk-jv9LRqx7X9GDZki0?key=ZUJKNDBEcWMxbGI5bmhsc2NOT29kaWlBa1dXUXN3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWi9pX1gkro2cRge9ehnTVrAFdiA1lJncMYG2FyrwydeijSIoM0_hWnGQc-4H59lPSKsCj9cVDpTSfUnHLrGLc_QY9v9vdNSiFE1lb9w82ZTiHuabSd_ld4lXju7jrZrEdojXJqhh8Zecj3Hjiy775LUA=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Afterward, we went to Plaza de Sant Felip Neri.&nbsp; The significance of this place was that the plaza was the site of a air attack from Italian bombers during the Spanish Civil War.&nbsp; Shrapnel damage from the bombs still scar the walls of the plaza.&nbsp; On another side of the plaza, the bomb damaged was repaired but one can still see the slight difference in colour between the bricks which shows how much of the wall had been destroyed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That night, we spent a little bit of time at the hostel bar.&nbsp; We all drank Sangria and the thing about that drink is that it tastes a lot like juice, which means it is really easy to drink too much.&nbsp; And that’s what I did.&nbsp; I puked a bunch and got a pretty bad hangover the next morning.&nbsp; I never intended to drink that much in the first place.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While we were drinking, we talked with this black dude and he always had racist jokes to say.  He went on about how white people could never get away with saying racist comments, which was so true. </p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Park Güell</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I spent the next morning puking too which sucked a lot.&nbsp; We went to the beach again that morning, but I felt so bad at that time that I decided to go back to the hostel to rest up a bit before doing anything.&nbsp; I felt a lot better in the evening and so we all continued sightseeing and went to Park Güell.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Park Güell was basically a park that featured a lot of Gaudi’s architectural exploits.&nbsp; Since he hated the use of right angles in his work, much of the design had curvy edges.&nbsp; Spanish architecture here was so different from the architecture I’d seen everywhere else.&nbsp; It was really distinct and unique.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">A Less Intense Night (at Least for Me)</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After visiting the park, we went to the hostel bar like the night before.&nbsp; Except this time, I didn’t do any crazy drinking.&nbsp; We met the same black dude from the night before again and this time he went on about how much he loved eating fried chicken, which just made me crack up so hard.&nbsp; He perpetuated that stereotype.&nbsp; Once the hostel bar quieted down, my friends went out for clubbing while I stayed at the hostel and went to sleep.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Mini-Sandwiches</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I found out later that they returned at around 6 am.&nbsp; Two of them were really high on weed apparently when they came back too (weed is legal in Barcelona so long as one possesses less than 50g).&nbsp; They missed the hostel breakfast that morning and slept in until 12pm.&nbsp; Once we all got ready, we went out for lunch at a mini-sandwich restaurant.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being able to pick meat off bones and peeling the shell off of shrimp was so satisfying.&nbsp; It was totally unlike the German dishes that involve none of that peeling whatsoever.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Writing at the Beach</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We spent the rest of the night at the beach to get one last look at it before leaving the next morning.&nbsp; When we got there, the sun was already setting so it was quite comfortable at the beach without the sun constantly cooking us.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the sun set, it actually got really cold.&nbsp; While sitting at the beach, I started writing bits of this blog entry in my notebook.&nbsp; Writing on the beach was really satisfying.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">My Joint-Rolling Experience</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we got back to the hostel, two of the people I went with wanted to use up the rest of the weed that they bought.&nbsp; I refused to do any weed when they offered it to me – even if it was legal here, but I did want to try rolling a joint.&nbsp; They passed me some of the weed and rolling paper and then taught me how to do it.&nbsp; In the end, I rolled a better joint than both of them and it was only my first try too.&nbsp; They called me a “stoner prodigy” and said how I’d be a really good stoner if I ever did weed.&nbsp; No way I’m going to smoke it for real though even if rolling a joint was an interesting experience.&nbsp; When the others started smoking the rest of the weed, I returned to the hostel and went to bed.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Flying Back</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next morning we all woke up at 6 am to get to the airport for our flight back to Stuttgart.  For pretty much the entire trip home, our whole group barely talked.  We all had this zombie look on our faces from waking up way too early and not sleeping enough.  It took a few hours for us to return back to our normal state.  We all felt it was a good trip – except for the part where I had too much Sangria.</p>
