<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Arriving at Pamukkale in the morning, the first thing that caught our attention was the dazzling sweep of white, rising from the plain like a tiered amphitheatre. The travertine terraces, created over thousands of years by mineral-laden hot springs, shone in the sunlight. After having lunch and chilling by at the hotel pool with the rest of the tour group, we made our way up to the terraces at dusk.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Water Built a &#8220;Castle&#8221;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We learned from our guide that each terrace is a natural bowl of travertine, a limestone deposited when hot, calcium-carbonate spring water loses carbon dioxide and solidifies. Over millennia the process stacked basin upon basin, producing a 200-metre cliff that gleams as if it has never known a footprint.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ/photos/c5d486b2-10c8-48a2-a086-c46998ba6e4b" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/c5d486b2-10c8-48a2-a086-c46998ba6e4b/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ&amp;c=3%2FcNDIJad3h%2FhoiLeIuVoFsIeA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">UNESCO recognised both the geology and the adjacent Greco-Roman spa of Hierapolis in 1988, ensuring stricter water-flow management so the terraces retain their snowy coat.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ruins with Stories in Stone</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the hilltop the ground levels into the ruins of Hierapolis, founded by the Attalid kings in the second century BCE.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ/photos/477c75a6-fe5f-4b65-9ab4-8902968134d1" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/477c75a6-fe5f-4b65-9ab4-8902968134d1/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ&amp;c=nucNLIhqZnZvd3h3eIa8cLEKJw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The theatre dominates the skyline. We hiked up to the top an watched the sunset.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ/photos/1c80a106-2ebf-4d48-894f-83828bf0ef4f" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/1c80a106-2ebf-4d48-894f-83828bf0ef4f/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ&amp;c=GwgSFIJ3iIePh3eMeHaDVUAZBg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The city sits atop the Pamukkale fault zone, a geologically active area responsible for both the mineral-rich hot springs and the site’s seismic instability. Major earthquakes are recorded in 17 CE under Tiberius and again, even more devastatingly, in 60 CE under Nero. The city was rebuilt with Roman imperial funds, but the threat of further destruction always loomed. Additional earthquakes in the 14th and 17th centuries CE led to significant structural collapse and abandonment by the surviving population.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within the ruins, stray animals call it home. Among the stray cats and dogs, a turtle stands out, a pet-trade species now ranked among the world’s most invasive reptiles.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Myth of Cerberus</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">South-east of the stage lies the Ploutonion, once famed as “Pluto’s Gate”. Ancient writers described sacrificial bulls collapsing here while priests emerged unharmed. Modern gas probes explain the trick: a fissure still vents carbon dioxide strong enough to reach lethal concentrations near the ground.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ/photos/a53e2031-6778-4eb4-9bcc-625731b75e6a" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/a53e2031-6778-4eb4-9bcc-625731b75e6a/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ&amp;c=nfcJLIZ5Volvhnl4iYiJcJQIRw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the viewing deck we could see the statue of Pluto and Cerberus guarding the gate to hell.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Bare-Foot Gauntlet</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The guide offered us two options to go back into town: 1) to take the bus back, or 2) walk down the terrace &#8211; reluctantly, I opted for the second option.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ/photos/5f7a8659-dc03-46f2-91f6-1b96ecde547a" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5f7a8659-dc03-46f2-91f6-1b96ecde547a/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=-nBGmFr6KGO1CywQz_39cNRhdesie9C2N_VGjAAqTYtdpPAFhhZZUUa9H_OdZwZJtLQ&amp;c=mvcFDIJod2ifhXhReYnJgEENOw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Galápagos Islands continued to impress us, and the expedition crew always managed to find something different for us to experience Rábida and Bartolomé offering entirely different experiences from the days before. From American flamingos in a secluded lagoon to volcanic formations and curious penguins, this day was packed with wildlife encounters and geological wonders.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rábida: Brackish Lagoons and Flamingos</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our morning began before breakfast with a nature walk on Rábida Island, known for its deep red volcanic sands and its brackish lagoon. The lagoon is home to a small population of American flamingos, one of the Galápagos &#8220;Big 15&#8221; species. Our guides told us the odds of seeing them were low, so we considered ourselves fortunate to catch several wading gracefully in the shallows.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/71lrgRJKWkhnI76HrYzHSGqjYeMVV35RNYlV6RNeUP_LEYREGEjgMoYLRL5g07HkhzE/photos/26db83b4-3d62-4720-b995-75b46de71d05" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/26db83b4-3d62-4720-b995-75b46de71d05/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=71lrgRJKWkhnI76HrYzHSGqjYeMVV35RNYlV6RNeUP_LEYREGEjgMoYLRL5g07HkhzE&amp;c=CvgBBYIBicWdSZiBdgeHdgSGRgUJ" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/71lrgRJKWkhnI76HrYzHSGqjYeMVV35RNYlV6RNeUP_LEYREGEjgMoYLRL5g07HkhzE/photos/36e7f60d-9f38-4163-95ad-2fd42244bfbc" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/36e7f60d-9f38-4163-95ad-2fd42244bfbc/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=71lrgRJKWkhnI76HrYzHSGqjYeMVV35RNYlV6RNeUP_LEYREGEjgMoYLRL5g07HkhzE&amp;c=mMcNLY57iHifh3hoiHeFdbNwUgpH" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among them was a juvenile with distinctive blue legs &#8211; a telltale sign of its age. We also got a good look at their black-tipped wings, which I never even knew existed. Flamingos, surprisingly strong fliers, most likely reached the Galápagos from mainland South America. One interesting fact the guides pointed out was how what looks like their knees are actually their ankles. They get their pink colour from their diet.</p>

<div class="wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/71lrgRJKWkhnI76HrYzHSGqjYeMVV35RNYlV6RNeUP_LEYREGEjgMoYLRL5g07HkhzE/photos/631ea5fc-4526-4e6a-9353-bca1ad7c4f57" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/631ea5fc-4526-4e6a-9353-bca1ad7c4f57/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=71lrgRJKWkhnI76HrYzHSGqjYeMVV35RNYlV6RNeUP_LEYREGEjgMoYLRL5g07HkhzE&amp;c=XigGBIJveZXTZXiUlZZQxYcGfg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we circled the lagoon, we passed a dead seal partially buried in the sand. It wasn&#8217;t clear what caused its death, but we didn’t speculate, but it was a stark reminder of the harsh realities of nature. </p>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We returned to the ship for breakfast after our walk. One of the passengers had a health scare that morning; he collapsed on the ground as we were observing the flamingos due to low blood sugar. Thankfully, he recovered quickly. He was lucky that it didn&#8217;t happen when we were on more rugged terrain.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Glass-Bottom Boat Ride</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After breakfast, we boarded a glass-bottom boat to observe marine life without getting wet. While it sounded ideal in theory, the reality proved less comfortable. The rocking of the boat while staring down made it easy to feel seasick.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bartolomé: Snorkelling and Penguins</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After lunch, we visited Bartolomé Island, a small but geologically striking islet famous for its towering volcanic spire, known as Pinnacle Rock. We began with a snorkelling session around the base of it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs/photos/5735d2c6-a9f0-46bf-9ad0-a58b7e915e16" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5735d2c6-a9f0-46bf-9ad0-a58b7e915e16/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs&amp;c=4tYJPIrDh3h6h3evdHRoYIcGhQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After several days in the water, I started feeling more at ease, whereas before I never felt comfortable in the water, and this made the session much more enjoyable. We started to swim around the rock. The underwater scenery was rich with life: bright schools of fish, the occasional shark.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5e932bfc-467f-44dd-98b9-a10b84b8b069/video/playback?key=V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs&amp;c=oocFFIaAeodYmXebZ4l8kPiHiQ%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I swam around the rock, I was busy looking around in the water, until I was suddenly startled by a sea lion sleeping near the surface. At first I panicked, but the sea lion paid us no mind. As it swam away, other snorkelers followed it.</p>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eventually we made it around the rock, and spotted some Galápagos penguins &#8211; another member of the &#8220;Big 15.&#8221; They stayed onshore this time, and we observed them resting on the rocks. It would have been school to swim in the water with them, but they didn&#8217;t jump in.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs/photos/ac89ea99-674b-4ceb-bb7e-8d95c96ccba1" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/ac89ea99-674b-4ceb-bb7e-8d95c96ccba1/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs&amp;c=WccNHoZQiXdph4iJd4h4d4d32ZOwqwc%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later we found out that one snorkeller returned with rashes after being unknowingly stung by jellyfish (apparently from a few days ago, but didn&#8217;t the rashes didn&#8217;t appear immediately). None of us had realized jellyfish were in the water.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Volcanic Landscapes and Iconic Views</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later in the day, we hiked to the summit of Bartolomé to take in its famous view &#8211; the one often featured in postcards of the Galápagos. The trail was constructed with a special local hardwood known for its resistance to salt and corrosion. The path included many stairs, which made some hesitate, but was no problem for me. Funny thing is that the guide was panting harder than I was.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs/photos/5a8a830a-caf1-46ad-8ca7-beb5f730395a" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5a8a830a-caf1-46ad-8ca7-beb5f730395a/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs&amp;c=XKYNTIyJZnePh4h3iHV3YHMHRg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we walked up, the black lava fields and stark, dry terrain stood in contrast to the more vegetated islands. Bartolomé is relatively barren, and is considered a geologically young island, having emerged from volcanic activity only a few hundred thousand years ago. Unlike older islands that have had time to accumulate soil and vegetation, Bartolomé&#8217;s surface is still largely exposed lava, ash, and tuff. Because it hasn&#8217;t developed significant plant cover or topsoil, its ecosystem remains in an early stage of ecological succession, providing a glimpse into what the earliest phases of island formation look like in the Galápagos.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lava tubes scar the landscape &#8211; formed when the outer crust of a lava flow solidifies while the molten core continues to move. When the lava drains away, it leaves behind hollow tunnels. The ropey textures we saw on the ground were from lava flows, which cool into smooth, undulating surfaces.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs/photos/f0763a90-a3c2-4531-a7d6-44482116914f" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/f0763a90-a3c2-4531-a7d6-44482116914f/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs&amp;c=F5cRLY6Vd4d%2Fh3h4h4iHdmRgRgd2" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The summit offers a sweeping view of Pinnacle Rock and the surrounding islets. From this vantage point, we could also see the contrast between the barren lava terrain of Bartolomé and the greener neighbouring islands like Santiago. The turquoise waters outlined the curves of the coastline, and we could spot sea birds gliding in the air currents.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs/photos/c6c46e2d-3635-4b23-aa48-1cdb1f0494f8" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/c6c46e2d-3635-4b23-aa48-1cdb1f0494f8/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=V9edEGvA1HjsjXBwb-kaTszQYiRe4RLGiVlG3_rXMJUoXcW48vW2K5AAS98F5_06nPs&amp;c=3fcJFISAZ3eZd3diiHJ%2FSv%2BX9A%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After the hike, we took a short boat ride along the shoreline and spotted several more Galápagos penguins perched on the rocks. These curious birds seemed unfazed by our presence, occasionally flapping their wings or hopping between stones. We got to see a closer view compared to snorkeling.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Evening Science and Stargazing</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those who had opted out of the climb spent time with the ship&#8217;s naturalists collecting seawater samples. After dinner, they showed us the samples under a microscope. Even in just 3 mL of seawater, we saw fish eggs, miniscule shrimp-like creatures, and other microorganisms. Then I wondered how many of them I ingested from accidentally drinking the seawater while snorkeling.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/e2dc2f11-1eed-4572-a383-72ffe1ff7e63/video/playback?key=CShBpTs8uB_8HyWD2jK40XIgFVVkFtg9CA-x-A5EtknLdRg25OmHQ4O1kCYH-ar2Ic4&amp;c=h%2BcFHIYIq4SHeHeSbXv5d52P1w%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later that night, the skies cleared and we joined the guides on the top deck for a stargazing session. Thanks to our equatorial position, we could see both northern and southern constellations. The guide used a powerful laser pointer to trace the outlines of Scorpio, Libra, the Southern Cross, and even Ursa Major. They pointed out bright stars and planets like Antares, Alpha Centauri, and Beta Centauri. The clarity of the sky, with minimal light pollution, made the session feel so much richer than at a planetarium. This day was so much more than just wildlife. It combined also geology, and scientific curiosity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our Antarctic journey has taken us through stunning landscapes and close encounters with wildlife, but Day 6 was a test of endurance. With plans to visit Palaver Point and embark on a zodiac tour around Harry Island, we braced ourselves for the coldest and most challenging day yet. As the snow flew horizontally in the relentless wind, we layered up and set out for the adventure ahead.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Palaver Point: A Frigid Visit to a Chinstrap Penguin Colony</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Palaver Point was our first destination, home to a colony of chinstrap penguins. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg/photos/f676f734-b658-4631-a66b-b139b9030952" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/f676f734-b658-4631-a66b-b139b9030952/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg&amp;c=p%2BcRFIJ3d3h%2FiHiId3Z4gHgHeQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike the gentoos and Adélies we had seen on previous days, these penguins seemed to stay close to their nesting areas, seemingly reluctant to venture far in the harsh conditions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg/photos/1dc70124-0a69-4a93-9fcc-30fb789f28ec" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/1dc70124-0a69-4a93-9fcc-30fb789f28ec/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg&amp;c=oPcJDYKWZZefl4ZjhploeEhwmAN2" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The harsh weather conditions may have contributed to this behaviour, as the penguins sought shelter from the intensifying Antarctic elements.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/cc86be49-8d81-48d2-9576-7633a340ceb5/video/playback?key=1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg&amp;c=ofcFFIJxmYivdoeXiXmLcLkIpw%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite their limited movement, the colony was surprisingly vocal. The penguins communicated with loud, persistent calls that echoed across the few colonies present. This vocalization might have been related to the weather conditions, or serving as a way for penguin families to maintain contact during limited visibility.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg/photos/2983af52-eab9-44e8-9cd5-23d3b9a96028" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/2983af52-eab9-44e8-9cd5-23d3b9a96028/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg&amp;c=Z%2FcFBYB6ZIk4tmm%2FWIdYqYuA1VoI" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our hike around Palaver Point proved more challenging than previous excursions. The combination of extremely dry air and intense cold caused my facial skin to dry out and crack. Without a balaclava for protection, my face remained numb throughout the entire expedition on land.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg/photos/9d2ae3e7-99cf-4b12-9a84-88af830301bb" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/9d2ae3e7-99cf-4b12-9a84-88af830301bb/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=1mpqYcTARXBJNPziq_vtU-ZcGY6n2PvfP6P4unyMvkfxFmpvy23i0bLURLoBHZzgYQg&amp;c=6tYFBIAPaHi7d4d6eGrQSAh4hQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Antarctic continent is technically classified as a desert due to its minimal precipitation, and the air contains almost no moisture, particularly in these coastal areas where temperatures can fluctuate dramatically. Riding the zodiac only intensified the cold, as the wind cut through every layer, making it hard to focus on anything other than staying warm.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Harry Island: A Zodiac Tour in Whiteout Conditions</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the afternoon, we joined the scheduled zodiac tour around Harry Island, despite the worsening weather conditions. The fear of missing out on a potential wildlife sighting or spectacular ice formation motivated our decision. As we set out, the visibility quickly deteriorated. Heavy snowfall and dense fog obscured the landscape, making it difficult to see much beyond the boat. The ride itself was far from smooth &#8211; the zodiac bounced over the rough waters rather than gliding through them, creating a jarring and prolonged exposure to the elements. The splashing got us all wet, making it us all even colder. We passed by a few seals lounging on ice floes, but it was difficult to even pay them any mind.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/pOy2SIXHeZ0crJQqIV9YvhlPh3LuPGnudaWTe4JK4ZZTO6eqV8iGePFVH63G6U9N1Es/photos/2f3b7574-8c7c-48be-b940-14ae988314ac" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/2f3b7574-8c7c-48be-b940-14ae988314ac/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=pOy2SIXHeZ0crJQqIV9YvhlPh3LuPGnudaWTe4JK4ZZTO6eqV8iGePFVH63G6U9N1Es&amp;c=59YNDIBceHh%2Fh3h1iHrCkCoNqQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the snow reducing visibility, the highlights of the tour were limited to a rock tower emerging from the water and a small grotto. While these geological formations were interesting, the extreme conditions made it difficult to appreciate them fully. It didn&#8217;t help either when our zodiac driver was an older fellow who droned on about Antarctic poetry &#8211; of all things &#8211; while the wind whipped across the open water. Poetry and subzero temperatures are not a great combination. In retrospect, skipping this tour might have been the better choice, and we later learned that many others had opted to stay on the ship instead of braving the cold.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nature Always Has the Upper Hand</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The sixth day of our Antarctic journey provided a valuable lesson in respecting the continent&#8217;s unpredictable and extreme environment. They remind us that we are visitors in one of Earth&#8217;s most extreme environments, where conditions can change rapidly and where nature always maintains the upper hand.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On our fifth day of Antarctic exploration, the weather shifted. The temperature dropped several degrees, the wind picked up, and snow began to fall. Despite the harsher conditions, we continued our journey, starting with Neko Harbour and later heading out on a zodiac cruise in Paradise Bay.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gentoo Penguin Colony at Neko Harbour</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our visit to Neko Harbour brought us face-to-face with a colony of gentoo penguins. Due to the colder, windier conditions, many of the adult penguins were sitting tightly on their chicks, shielding them from the elements. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA/photos/399b88a0-6b85-43e1-81cc-309d58888d8d" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/399b88a0-6b85-43e1-81cc-309d58888d8d/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=pecNHIZnh3d%2FiIeLd5aJgJYIaA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The penguins cope with Antarctic temperatures through a combination of dense feathers, thick subcutaneous fat layers, and specialized circulatory systems that minimize heat loss in their extremities.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/2cac991b-8a0d-493a-bad4-56e939304f69/video/playback?key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=pecJDIJzZ3ePd4eWiHmKkKgJmg%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6ee32528-d686-4465-81a1-98a0ba21e94b/video/playback?key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=4vcBFIQticRwWJWFmFmHcIoIlw%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gentoo penguins are the fastest of all penguin species, capable of reaching speeds up to 36 km/h underwater. Watching them swim was almost like seeing a laser beam darting through the icy waters.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6f09936a-6d42-4b1c-9cf6-d236be858560/video/playback?key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=4fcFBICMUK5utmiKYon3VlafNQ%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They still look goofy when they walk on land, and this awkward movement on land contrasts sharply with their remarkable swimming abilities. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA/photos/fa6e92d7-1a7b-4461-8011-25e68320a9ad" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/fa6e92d7-1a7b-4461-8011-25e68320a9ad/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=KOcFDIBYeHe%2BiHiQh614QW8n9A%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also observed their well-worn &#8220;penguin highways&#8221; &#8211; small, carved-out paths in the snow they use to travel between their colony and the beach. These highways are formed by the repeated passage of penguins, gradually compressing the snow into defined trails.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/8da715d1-ff46-45f2-8e2b-78bfff15a28f/video/playback?key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=H%2BcNDIB6eIiQiIhzeGaVX1r5dQ%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When crossing these highways during our hike, we followed strict instructions to give the penguins right of way and to avoid stopping at any intersections that crossed their paths. We observed the gentoo penguins&#8217; distinctive waddling gait as they travelled along these highways. </p>

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reaching the colony required a challenging uphill walk. The increasing wind made it even more difficult, and by the time we reached the top, my face had gone numb. However, the effort was worth it, as the higher vantage point provided a sweeping view of the harbour, with icebergs floating in the bay below.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA/photos/084b1d25-91f6-4048-a026-02dabd9169d6" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/084b1d25-91f6-4048-a026-02dabd9169d6/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dfSa7XNLGbs6FOn5L6XN0ySAy2_KvpNdZHBJuOrUDDPjbZnTYfnA_82lT4eJvSkVgRA&amp;c=ZvcJDYKDd4e%2FeIdrh1eHnItDvzr1" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Across the water, a massive glacier towered in the distance with massive crevasses. Every glacier, ice shelf, iceberg, etc. was like a natural sculpture.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wildlife Spotting in Paradise Bay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the afternoon, we embarked on a zodiac cruise around Paradise Bay. The purpose of this excursion was to get closer to the inactive research bases in the area and to observe wildlife from the water.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY/photos/658a37c7-4c85-48c6-81d6-96dae0461409" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/658a37c7-4c85-48c6-81d6-96dae0461409/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY&amp;c=qecFBIB5eGh%2FeIdzeHfxdEeI9w%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During our cruise, we spotted a small vessel in the distance. Our guide informed us that it was likely a private expedition and noted that such a small boat would have faced a much more challenging journey across the Drake Passage than our ship. While our crossing of the Drake Passage took approximately two days, a vessel of that size might require 8 to 10 days to navigate the same waters, not to mention being thrown around a lot harder in the waves.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY/photos/7547b313-6be2-4faf-9b7d-58a87886d0cd" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/7547b313-6be2-4faf-9b7d-58a87886d0cd/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY&amp;c=58YNDICId4d%2FiHeFd4d3cLsx8w%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The wildlife sightings began with more gentoo penguins resting on ice floes. It&#8217;s remarkable to see these penguins in these places, so far from their colonies. They have adapted to life in Antarctica through specialized features including dense waterproof feathers and the ability to drink salt water. Their bodies contain special glands that filter excess salt, which they expel through their nasal passages.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY/photos/8a9cb9fd-dac7-4269-a5c3-b38f1d684ec2" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/8a9cb9fd-dac7-4269-a5c3-b38f1d684ec2/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY&amp;c=JtcFDIJYiXifh4iJd4iagKgJiA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our cruise transformed into an impromptu whale-watching expedition when we encountered several humpback whales swimming nearby.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">

</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY/photos/56a08c89-66c9-42cf-a72a-9d113bac2cb3" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/56a08c89-66c9-42cf-a72a-9d113bac2cb3/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY&amp;c=avcRDYB4eIiPh4eHd2eIdXqf2ffL" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We paused to observe them, and soon discovered that we were surrounded. As we focused on one pod of whales, another would surface elsewhere, reminiscent of a game of whac-a-mole. The whales appeared curious about our presence, with one even swimming directly underneath our zodiac, briefly making me worry it might tip us over. Fortunately, these gentle giants seemed aware of our presence and moved carefully around us.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY/photos/ac5249fa-250c-4139-92c0-b8f8475289aa" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/ac5249fa-250c-4139-92c0-b8f8475289aa/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY&amp;c=avcNBYCYZ4h%2Fh3h7h2iId0V8XzX3" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While we saw many whales, none of them breached as dramatically as the whalewatching tour brochures often depict. Our guide explained that breaching is not as common as people expect, making it a rare sight even on dedicated whale-watching excursions (very misleading in those whalewatching brochures). In 20 to 30 minutes, we saw more whales than in the entire expedition combined.</p>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each iceberg presented a different shape, texture, and blue hue, appearing as naturally sculpted art installations drifting across the bay. The distinctive blue colour results from the ice&#8217;s unique crystalline structure which absorbs red light while reflecting blue wavelengths. Some icebergs contain ice that fell as snow thousands of years ago, preserving ancient atmospheric conditions within their frozen layers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY/photos/252eb4f1-faab-4578-8d22-a333d169c03f" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/252eb4f1-faab-4578-8d22-a333d169c03f/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=PbVNVsRe0z0RpJ_TL9UMD_dECAlYifaCWob_plFbHNuWjYxYbaV6M9PPz3i9ow0t1ZY&amp;c=5cYFBICAh4xGiKgztUl%2F9Za4jw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We spent so much time watching the whales, and the other wildlife that we ran out of time and didn&#8217;t even make it to go see the abandoned research bases. This was totally okay, seeing the whales was better than doing a drive-by of the abandoned research base.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Driving from Carcassonne to Andorra ultimately took four hours. We started in the evening and watched as the sun set during the long drive. Eventually the flat plains of southern France disappeared as we climbed up the Pyrenees, the mountain range separating France and Spain. As we drove through the mountain range, the winds got windier through the switchbacks. We were lucky that there was still light out as we did the drive &#8211; we encountered a crashed car in the trees at one of the hairpins. Surprisingly, there were hitchhikers trying to get a ride in the middle of nowhere in the mountains.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOELgosqXTS47ZA5BdjLlW56jWXtCQMCcJiUCU6mljlS0T-TXjVyDa3yZWHPH9iSw/photo/AF1QipNGHZ255MhRakVVrZzWYbj8yWTPhVpZ8wDy1bA0?key=emxMM2kzX1VfcEJ5anhRZ3BJZXRFNE9ka0UyWUZR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXeJVnfMDu1yMBuueCGZPGbqfYRjPVNEQ8nD67Bac0as5C2Kw6hkXpyxh2EzGFE1y8CYORjCKak6q6fIGWwD4Q7DI6K7zkRdI1i-3dHxtVNUWuNuRclO5ppBjzIB9l1oRAqGW0AMXzPKFhYoPV48jbeWg=w1454-h818-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Andorra is the 6th smallest country in Europe and its capital is Andorra la Vella, the European capital with the highest elevation. It&#8217;s a principality like Monaco, except that it&#8217;s headed by two co-princes: the bishop of Urgell, Catalonia, and the president of France. Even though it&#8217;s not part of the EU, it still maintains open borders (there&#8217;s no way to get there except by land) &#8211; so no extra passport stamp for us.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Its official language is Catalan. In fact, Catalan originated here and spread outward to Barcelona, the place more commonly known to speak Catalan. Initially, we thought Andorra was a Spanish-speaking country until we saw welcome signs at the border saying &#8220;benvinguts&#8221;. I don&#8217;t know Spanish, but I at least knew their word for it was &#8220;bienvenidos&#8221;, so I deduced that Andorra would be Catalan-speaking. There are other words like &#8220;obert&#8221; means &#8220;open&#8221;, and &#8220;xocolat&#8221; means &#8220;chocolate&#8221;. Even though Catalan is the official language, Spanish, French, and Portuguese is also prevalent. Luckily, I knew a tiny bit of Spanish, so getting around there wasn&#8217;t a huge struggle. I didn&#8217;t really know much about Andorra before going there &#8211; I figured I&#8217;d just be going to a new country.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOELgosqXTS47ZA5BdjLlW56jWXtCQMCcJiUCU6mljlS0T-TXjVyDa3yZWHPH9iSw/photo/AF1QipPdexwgBhzt2ozjLKeEoBFCaUL99HQk9HJ8l462?key=emxMM2kzX1VfcEJ5anhRZ3BJZXRFNE9ka0UyWUZR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXwY_ZShbe0Ji9XYaBCGKzDep8XCBDiLERDlP6FUs-XZgd2PrV6FuBi7jR6V79F1_1WSn-4KWKUwRPyUkisJH7WwBluV7aYH4xQ33JDPYlJneKT7WIgplRFKnL35dGGgrCblL8RMsART0ep1-qzkWC1_w=w1454-h818-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The lady at the tourist info center was really nice and gave us free postcards. She also noted that Andorra doesn&#8217;t have its own postal service. The let the Spanish and French postal services set up shop there so people can send letters &#8220;locally&#8221; to these respecive countries. She also taught us how to say &#8220;thank you&#8221; in Catalan &#8211; &#8220;gracie-es&#8221;, as opposed to the Spanish &#8220;gracie-as&#8221;. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Afterward, we took a short break at a local chocolate shop and had some drinking chocolate. It was like being Aztec royalty. But it was very very rich &#8211; to the point it was difficult finishing the entire cup. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because of all the mountains, there are a lot of hikes and viewpoints in the area. Even the city itself had a short 20 minute hike to get a view of the city. The city itself is very quiet, and hotels are everywhere &#8211; all there to handle thewinter skiiing/snowboarding traffic. Traffic must be bad in the winter &#8211; most of the roads in the country were single lane per direction.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOELgosqXTS47ZA5BdjLlW56jWXtCQMCcJiUCU6mljlS0T-TXjVyDa3yZWHPH9iSw/photo/AF1QipM-njIOtK9GUAUQlzCpKZsN-zzQPdt0VKLjkc53?key=emxMM2kzX1VfcEJ5anhRZ3BJZXRFNE9ka0UyWUZR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUGpw2GWW_6YL5GrrB6nK9RNBcZX7WvGUE8lQ0QVoMOAYCGyghTlyctz6Qx1_u62egvbP5M8VTVCB9WK_Rf2y85LKMpRWofVCGVcbZtx1CGaDK4Ck4oJIBOlqJuPIOCfwSLUohFWPMBNrQJZ14xyrw4LQ=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We visited the viewpoint of Mirador Roc del Quer to see mountains in the day. Interestingly, even in the summer, there are no snowcaps on the mountain tops.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOELgosqXTS47ZA5BdjLlW56jWXtCQMCcJiUCU6mljlS0T-TXjVyDa3yZWHPH9iSw/photo/AF1QipNd5d4S9RUxdDZKSv8DvdhENq9usG6q15vYTEeb?key=emxMM2kzX1VfcEJ5anhRZ3BJZXRFNE9ka0UyWUZR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXgYxm9oQ1HOr50A8BeTX1kSFWk-bdebVG5C871iRO_Z1fKVcq7nyXjywewoOAI41kAT4ibWVSzlDtVlJTmSwaJtc36OIO7XR8ZRlHklGXDSbqArzRP2FkJ5sLQ02am-NKg_LgU2PWgJqW12juMDEIqWQ=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After visiting Andorra, we headed to Toulouse where we&#8217;d spend our last night before we returned home. We had only momentarily escaped the heat and humidity of southern France &#8211; it came roaring back when we reached Toulouse. We spent the night walking around town to see sights like the Pont Neuf (&#8220;new bridge&#8221;), which lights up at night. There&#8217;s also the beautiful and ornate city hall, which also lights up at night.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dinner service was very slow &#8211; maybe it was just from the place we ate at, but it also fit the stereotypes we knew of southern French culture. We thought we could eat quickly and spend the rest of the time walking around, but we spent a good portion of time waiting for our food. We did get to try the Touloussian style cassoulet, but felt the one from Carcassonne to be better. The one from Carcassone had a richer duck flavour. We also got to try a chicken medallion with mushroom stuffing inside, which was really good. I still found the majority of the bread served in restaurants that we tried to be quite underwhelming &#8211; I could do better.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMmZdBUvE0PPymtkaLj_5_WGqejWXYWnpwImPBoW2pN5FX9Qp8lGLOblhvWiuOBOQ/photo/AF1QipMknAVQZxN-YE6jejXOgN5pKGQV-WPy16F7A4N_?key=MmFmZzdPRW1CZHRkLU1ZU21Yd3hfV19zYWN0Yk1n" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWulQ6AO7n-EgEmKGyuJ3MuTjVPDda2efO8GTeMIlo7AaNsmBAdAtm3qW1VShjmzwvboxakkseaoM8z0Ko7biPPcTqh4Vh0RTzIBU4_30fhnUGquG8QEQ2LIeaTvSFzeHwZoDhW2_FrXypuc2YFJyBOAw=w1633-h919-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We had a great time here and am grateful that we got to explore more new places! It was great to get a broad view of the south of France but it was a shame we couldn&#8217;t stay longer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Avignon, we headed to Carcassonne. The AirBnB we stayed at didn&#8217;t have any laundry detergent for us, and we were able to copy what the people in Marseille did &#8211; we made our own soap flakes using a potato peeler, mixed it in water and poured it in the laundry machine. It worked! We slept in and woke up at the time we were supposed to check out. We got ready quickly and headed out to see the medieval fortified city of Carcassonne.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNZCoH3cremffzfaRRAxJubBH5tPbmeSKuIODN3TssEXWcj0vn82WtAWg-_6Bugsg/photo/AF1QipPGUpqbvv1kPZKJ3q-NK_ee8Bu4ixRQ3a0boVA3?key=S25vLXlpZVYyUlhMOFZfV0s0dXZvREJHWkszUzhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVuCNWwrExPhZ6LfLep_ogUvW6sMy6ZWf-kwT94du8UKu2TKcLH0Vi7271d6Sj74WeuQE52vdeEb1UcmcXCn4UtZisukJs4ZE1-sZQhHVRBwPg-d5ohr7e1_mkw39h6XUXGYRo2l_xnzV_cy3P4szQCPg=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fortified city was almost demolished in the 19th century but after much protest by the locals, it was restored and now it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNZCoH3cremffzfaRRAxJubBH5tPbmeSKuIODN3TssEXWcj0vn82WtAWg-_6Bugsg/photo/AF1QipNXzqzAOTAoD7F-kbGN44ThtmDAaFnTmWnzdG2d?key=S25vLXlpZVYyUlhMOFZfV0s0dXZvREJHWkszUzhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWGsvGTYRZDAyUyitRvv3nE2HvrYew8nzE3gfG6ws4YsRkp9poRHUi243xpTKPMaIqc9zeTWOSPhZP_-YL23ML0X6zsjpa4VRAGKMxIE31uS95RlXzMmiU7cJjU5Mo9SQywGH85aR_UmkM423KYuashQw=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We happened to visit Carcassonne at the same time as the Carcassonne Game Festival &#8211; a Carcassonne board game themed festival. I had played the board game before, but I had no idea that it was connected to the actual medival city itself. People got to play the board game Carcassone inside the walled city of Carcassonne. How cool! There were other events like axe-throwing, archery, and bowling (using the little meeples as the pins)! If I was a kid, I would have definitely enjoyed it a lot.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNZCoH3cremffzfaRRAxJubBH5tPbmeSKuIODN3TssEXWcj0vn82WtAWg-_6Bugsg/photo/AF1QipPNZoho1bGYrKO0uLl6_FYV0qVlR75VcJnYTn33?key=S25vLXlpZVYyUlhMOFZfV0s0dXZvREJHWkszUzhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUItpnkr5vXBZPJuBmrtpKKfA8zGAP1e9qo8zQ7YcN7YlLLmV5wgsQLX1nJfVzOkc7LNw-d-RQ_5JJGbnLNGZll1wRLq5W5mQpSedndb490v3KcROwO4-EoVUYEaFLLG44SApkAabAif34uQl1SLBoMDQ=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are paths to walk along the defensive walls of the city. Luckily by today the weather had cooled down compared to the previous days and it was actually comfortable walking outside.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNZCoH3cremffzfaRRAxJubBH5tPbmeSKuIODN3TssEXWcj0vn82WtAWg-_6Bugsg/photo/AF1QipMnoW_f5E4repmOVm3KMG0vOt462rBnFPUsqlNs?key=S25vLXlpZVYyUlhMOFZfV0s0dXZvREJHWkszUzhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWa0CUpyeVXMW7TtQtTK08WnHf-HR97R8FZXh6O7m9nM5ggiYGp2m96SNPPC_FllaCQPXf9rRkS7lKwCqYWSBtRyfbaCNkAIrKi4TVOWmHbuMqkt-5lriYNVooSzNzSzlzPESZ0Y6sLM5SXQsC9JCoSJw=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As usual, the castle is built on top of a hill &#8211; it&#8217;s the best defensible position. But because of that, visitors have access to views down into the town.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNZCoH3cremffzfaRRAxJubBH5tPbmeSKuIODN3TssEXWcj0vn82WtAWg-_6Bugsg/photo/AF1QipP59DeLKRG-1Rk_UmSVFCbWWMzgU52bRu3pSmUk?key=S25vLXlpZVYyUlhMOFZfV0s0dXZvREJHWkszUzhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUlwQCGBmixqPLmXYsd6rojk8VrK5C3mxCwxmDJCE0qQ-sJEq_5h0V2AVY8Ij8QsqI4_Ckio13qflg3mRkcJjaRwE4zieoZNsHLl0xG85fSVM3ira8RFI9iIibQdreW02p9s3hwb6LiKx853cbVuryl1g=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The castle itself isn&#8217;t just a fortification, there&#8217;s also a city inside of it too. Mostly it&#8217;s souvenir stores and restaurants. From a local store owner, I learned that the animals in French don&#8217;t sound the same as in English &#8211; it makes a &#8220;quah quah&#8221; noise &#8211; the guy made what I thought to be a super strange noise at first as I walked by his store presumably to attract customers, and after giving him a super confused look, he explained what it was.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNZCoH3cremffzfaRRAxJubBH5tPbmeSKuIODN3TssEXWcj0vn82WtAWg-_6Bugsg/photo/AF1QipONmADEJi-jo4hzw8rgse0LCwWha4zOQ0fxapNU?key=S25vLXlpZVYyUlhMOFZfV0s0dXZvREJHWkszUzhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVHXc5CqwpMCMbNCSkwLlPj2JHt9YHeb8lMp3FwADsPT-tx_c1J7HJrAh6fhxeEaVtPTX4LEATfer7Q0vbon3HKMrPGJ_sfhd33uEYi36h9SZCJyQA9d4MVk81Ed8GoZ9SPWd373fBbt6u10hiKgsT2Fg=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The storeowner was actually selling earthenware for cooking cassoulet, a local dish. The dish is said to have originated in the town of Castelnaudary, and is particularly popular in the neighbouring towns of Toulouse and Carcassonne. We got to try it at a place called Méli et Zéli. It&#8217;s a slow cooked stew with beans, sausages, and goose/duck confit. It&#8217;s super rich and heavy. The duck flavour is very apparent. I want to learn how to make this.</p>

We reached the base of the mountain, but we weren&#8217;t prepared to hike the whole thing, so instead we looked for a car road up to some sort of view point.</p>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The road I could see go to the top was a single lane road and it wasn&#8217;t apparent whether or not it was a one-way, but after seeing another car go up, I decided to follow. I just hoped that there weren&#8217;t any cars coming the other way because it was either drive off a cliff or into the trees.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We found a wider part of the road and pulled over to get a good look. If we had more time, we would have hiked up there &#8211; it looked fun. I ended up going back town the same way, again hoping I didn&#8217;t encounter another car. Eventually I did, but luckily the speeds were slow, the road was bit wider at that point, and I was able to swerve enough just in time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We started the day in a sleepy town we couldn&#8217;t pronounce, Arles. It&#8217;s mostly known for its rich history as part of the Roman Empire. It&#8217;s main attraction is the Arles ampitheatre. The night before, we had walked by it with our bags walking to the AirBnB, but in the morning, we could see it in all its glory. It was built in 90 AD and still stands to this day. Back then, when Arles played an important role in the Roman Empire, the stadium drew massive crowds, but nowadays, Arles&#8217; prominence is not what it once was and now the ampitheatre hosts local events. However, one local event in particular is the Feria d&#8217;Arles, a bullfighting festival. It&#8217;s hosted in mid September and we saw people posting signs for it &#8211; apparently we just missed it by a couple of days.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the Roman times, the main rival of Arles was Marseille as a port town. Back then, the town was closer to the Mediterranean and the Romans built a series of canals to the sea, but over the centuries, the silt flowing from the river has buried the former harbour. Marseille is the bigger city today, but in that time, Arles was of considerable importance to the Romans. The leaders of Arles sided with Julius Caesar in his war against Pompey. Once Julius Caesar won and consolidated power, Marseille&#8217;s possessions were transferred to Arles. The city went into decline during the barbarian invasions that led to the fall of Rome.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For breakfast, again we found that the French, at least in this part of the country, don&#8217;t open any of their restaurants until noon. Even the places that are open, only serve drinks. This often left us hungry from morning till noon. At least for lunch, we went to La Gueule du Loup (literally translates to the Mouth of the Wolf). There we got to try a bull steak and a bull tataki (maybe a reference to the bullfighting event). Apart from the bull meat, the steak itself is prepared the standard way with a red wine sauce. Upon ordering the steak, I realized I didn&#8217;t know how to say rare in French, but the server was nice enough to explain it to me &#8211; &#8220;saignant&#8221; (the same server later also taught us how to pronounce Arles, like &#8220;arrrl&#8221;). The tataki was much more special &#8211; a blue rare bull steak with a miso/sesame sauce, mushrooms, and a black rice risotto topped with truffle oil (tataki is a Japanese culinary term, but the only thing Japanese about the dish was the use of miso and sesame). The black rice is grown locally in the region of Camargue, that Arles is a part of. They even brew beer with the rice, but the taste isn&#8217;t too different from other types of lagers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After lunch, we headed over to Avignon, which used to be the seat of the Catholic church (as opposed to the Vatican) for 7 successive popes in the 14th century. Eventually, there was a dispute resulting both Avignon and Rome both declaring their own line of popes and for a time the papal succession had branched. The line of popes from Avignon were subsequently declared as illegitimate &#8220;antipopes&#8221; (but we like to say &#8220;bastard popes&#8221; for fun). The last antipope eventually agreed to relinquish the title and became a bishop. The popes resided in the Palais des Papes. The palace itself was both a fortress and a residence for the Avignon popes. The walls were intentionally very thick to withstand long sieges &#8211; to add on to that, the city has its own walls too.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPi51OmI4GRnwoR3Lr1aCkFrJt93ooaFfOFgeeGGnaMnAkH09qcF394vf7MF3g_4Q/photo/AF1QipP69VHVZkCZHVZ6bPb6ZD_d2h5bFnpVHE3SySWx?key=eWdqbTBIRFMycGVUcUEydk9vYV9rdUxpcko3aVFR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUuS6H0s8OHsLSlR0vhr_YYdJPdWojU6DjY4vKLOzktzE2-2WwPrkmJwIwb52sLhnAh-3mqwe_nsubKfadF-5z6-v_SWmj2EUwFytbY_raE4uloeITEkdoVvYfQ07GVPSZ_vdVPcK5g4_mtmbnyry-67A=w1814-h1021-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The inside of the palace explains the long history of the Avignon Papacy along with different rooms in the palace. Like European history in general, it&#8217;s pretty tough to follow because there are so many interconnected people and events happening concurrently.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post is long overdue. I went on this trip in July 2021, and now posting it over one year later. I guess I got lazy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the time we went, Iceland was one of the few countries in the world that allowed vaccinated foreign visitors. All that was needed was proof of vaccination &#8211; not even a pre-entry COVID test. The fact that most people were vaccinated meant that most people were not wearing masks in the city, but this was before even the Delta variant &#8211; it seems like so long ago now.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOilkMtHC-MUWZE2bctBC6wazanmcN-tN3qb76wfjPezSXFtfnpq-xP7tdBxvdV-w/photo/AF1QipPt-bFwMURQtI-VqeKfXFPkgPo6---uPN2Xm83X?key=LVZraFp4YjNmZk9TVmdRbWZ0dnNyZUYydlpZV25R" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AM-JKLVu3OeWO8ko4F0vxm-pkPx2hUSynJi2-ALgrknzJChZ1J2hIybQuICGUQgsxv6PW2fep9eTdjs9urDuX8wxRhUXTnicnGHFcK8vEBQwOnuXiPu315BWnNBsfyYCJPywDk6phzFFQcoCSHU2ID8DFP5SSg=w964-h723-no?authuser=0" alt="" width="1136" height="723"/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had been itching to go travel somewhere since the pandemic began, and this was a very welcome nudge towards normalcy. Flying with Icelandair was the same as before: the seat and leg room is pretty comfortable, but there&#8217;s no food included with the airfare. The only difference is the extra bureacracy related to COVID, which increased how long it took each person to get through immigration, resulting in long lines after the plane. It didn&#8217;t help that we arrived so early in the morning that the food places weren&#8217;t even open yet and we had to wait in line while hungry. Eventually, we picked up the rental car and drove into Reykjavik for breakfast. We took the day easy by just exploring Reykjavik on foot, and took a nap in the afternoon when the jet lag caught up to us.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOilkMtHC-MUWZE2bctBC6wazanmcN-tN3qb76wfjPezSXFtfnpq-xP7tdBxvdV-w/photo/AF1QipM8pH_UmrW60MF8ewUXRXiMl7XhrPu00JySvIZc?key=LVZraFp4YjNmZk9TVmdRbWZ0dnNyZUYydlpZV25R" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUPRjGNakwIQgYYjDKVzYPl7_yFssKgGrNkA5tHnvv8eqJHEDZjUdGfbQ0UuC0eLcnZehOxtMjsoqHcJOZyVA0Nmx-WKJfN6WkY6J4O29ow8XjpdSSfVKofNamVJStV_SRkZz59CMKbp7EcCDaMspuatQ=w1633-h919-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That night, we had probably the most memorable meal we&#8217;ve ever had at Tapas Barinn. The great thing about tapas is that as tourists, we get to try a little bit of everything as opposed to ordering entrées.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOilkMtHC-MUWZE2bctBC6wazanmcN-tN3qb76wfjPezSXFtfnpq-xP7tdBxvdV-w/photo/AF1QipNEAjLynLyevf1G36majp2HiPoc3M9KAJuSFQ1B?key=LVZraFp4YjNmZk9TVmdRbWZ0dnNyZUYydlpZV25R" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVjh1T-4k90Ny67SUsHbprhnpYhjIKMB9m4Jg9WinF6wNMo8j-b3cbvS0q7zTG76Q3UbQXiRx_3DHr2vgZ15RX2yYxIL5dvac_iTAWvLEc23UNtgZUrq-tWZDkJMHUF7lOr0KvBYqjkYnZNjlT3U5Er_Q=w1633-h919-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I even got to try some Flóki single malt whiskey. The smokiness from the whiskey actually comes from the barley smoked using sheep dung, a traditional cooking method. I also got to try some more brennivin like my last trip to Iceland &#8211; it&#8217;s essentially a grain alcohol (40%) and flavoured with caraway seeds, which gives it a sweeter flavour than something like vodka.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had visited Iceland a couple years ago, but it was in the winter where there was only 4 hours of light per day, and even then the sky looked like dusk.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This time, travelling there in the summer, I didn&#8217;t see the night sky the entire time I was there. I could more clearly see and appreciate the nature around me, like the endless fields of moss growing on the rocks, and sheep freely roaming the fields.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is thought that the Icelandic sheep were introduced to Iceland by the Viking settlers. Farmers allow them to freely roam around in the summer months, and as winter comes, they round them all back up again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2019/01/14/iceland-driving-the-ring-road/" target="_blank">my previous trip to Iceland</a>, we travelled along the Ring Road to see the waterfalls, and the volcanic beaches.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is what the view at Seljalandsfoss looks like in the summer versus the view I saw in the winter. I had no idea Iceland could be so green. In the summer, people can even walk behind the waterfall, between the rock and the falls itself, but in the winter, the trail is closed because of ice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike travelling to Iceland in the winter, there were no restrictions (4WD) to drive up to Dyrhólaey in the summer. As we drove up, I could see why. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next day, we took a Superjeep tour to see ice caves on an active volcano known as Katla. The reason why it&#8217;s called Superjeep is because it can deflate its tires (for icy roads), and inflate them back up again depending on the terrain, but otherwise it looks like your typical Ford Excursion but with big tires.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite the summer season, the temperature still felt like a mild winter. But it still meant the ice caves would not be as fully developed as in the winter season, and this could clearly be seen when comparing the ice caves from this trip versus the previous one. In fact, the winter ice cave was really more of a tunnel, while the picture of the summer ice cave was taken from the end of the cave with the camera pointing out.</p>

If the movie had shown the whole cave, one would see why people call it the &#8220;Yoda Cave&#8221;.</p>

It has a brown colour because of the rye flour and milk used, and the milk gives a finer crumb on the inside with richer flavours from the milk fat. The crust isn&#8217;t as crispy due to a longer bake at a lower temperature. When they bury the baking pot in the ground, they mark it with a small rock to remember where its location.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next step along the Golden Circle was Geysir. The geothermal heat creates pressure underground causing the water to explode upward every few minutes. The entire area is filled with geothermal pools, some of which are so hot they&#8217;re bubbling from the heat and pressure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOilkMtHC-MUWZE2bctBC6wazanmcN-tN3qb76wfjPezSXFtfnpq-xP7tdBxvdV-w/photo/AF1QipM_PxoetOoB2AfpU1OJyLKlO3E7MlSUA9AloXpm?key=LVZraFp4YjNmZk9TVmdRbWZ0dnNyZUYydlpZV25R" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUT2ckL3SGtUaXw2ZLo1dOt7yf27VFa6FdX27QT4hmKWBPyJtgZPJc-3iZDoaygNlbgmkcBI_pXUQmk0imrkCUcFgGCt0XeZbsLpL1AuFSLdRVI2IxTKGCzXjuxBTxvQMaS8uZorWctLhROK6cX8NJgcw=w1633-h919-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s cool just to just stand in anticipation of the eruption. From looking at it, there&#8217;s no indication that it&#8217;s going to explode at all, and then it just does. At one point, the wind carried the water toward us and got us all wet, but luckily by the time the water hits the ground, it&#8217;s cooled down.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the Geysir, we drove to Gullfoss. Unlike other waterfalls, this one has a unique feature where the water does a zig zag before hitting the bottom.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOilkMtHC-MUWZE2bctBC6wazanmcN-tN3qb76wfjPezSXFtfnpq-xP7tdBxvdV-w/photo/AF1QipMCDszZdw-wiE4bqZkF3gRsUUhPGbNMBnGrgqPM?key=LVZraFp4YjNmZk9TVmdRbWZ0dnNyZUYydlpZV25R" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWCSyC9u1UmfZbMoqlaYPIyr2KX3KMvlI6tvDXfusNUAHjtLAr7-UM0Dkk7luJFs5ASHQ6ZxQ4vjeBv-k0GC2h_mkavR46Az9_MzeNtZQtOoLeFeoMRh8Rff9UpVlNa0S6yluk9zeGM-ApkEvVKLq0X3w=w1634-h919-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There were attempts in the past to build a hydroelectric plant here, but those efforts have not succeeded, and since then, the waterfall is now under government protection.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The last destination of the Golden Circle was Kerið crater. It&#8217;s believed that the crater formed through volcanic activity. Once the magma chamber emptied, it collapsed, forming the crater. The accumulation of water is not formed by rainfall, but is actually ground water.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s not often that I would rave about soup, but I liked it so much I&#8217;ve been trying to <a href="https://www.icelandfoodcentre.com/kjotsupa-icelandic-lamb-soup/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.icelandfoodcentre.com/kjotsupa-icelandic-lamb-soup/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recreate the flavour at home</a>. It&#8217;s savoury soup with vegetables, lamb, and herbs/spices. I can&#8217;t say I was a huge fan of the dried fish and fermented shark though. The dried fish is served with butter and its flavour reminds me of super tough beef jerky with a light fish flavour, while the fermented shark has a texture of a ham with a soury tang. Perhaps it&#8217;s an acquired taste. The beer was great though.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s pretty much it for Iceland. We got the chance to try all sorts of local delicacies, and see a piece of nature we wouldn&#8217;t normally see in our part of the world. At the airport duty free, I even got to pick up some Brennivin, and a bottle of the Flóki sheep dung whiskey!</p>

But it&#8217;s probably best known for it&#8217;s connection to Lawrence of Arabia, who spent some time in the desert during the Arabian revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our tour took us through the desert in a pickup truck. All we had to do was sit in the back and admire the views. At first it was a little bit disorienting because I literally have never sat in the back of a pickup truck before. I&#8217;d seen it many times in movies and what not, but that was it &#8211; especially from news clips where insurgents in Iraq or Afghanistan would do it, so it was pretty hard to not compare my experience with that.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPeMKBhzfINGDoRokDKh3j5CayfsXNtc5Aml88xzq1RWOBB5eeh56sExp5icsoLSQ/photo/AF1QipNA-PPEdK5u43S4yMXPTnIxqPkHRG0dp0ez9ISG?key=RXowdEJYVUNCOXU1ZTBYbHFlZWx3bWk5dmZveXJR" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPNdE6XFumTF6xgoLXUd6tVjmvzD3Rhqba53otIR2S0JQaZ7LMK2BPXlA0egAFZZZI0RlSOZjuugNHMDPbrWn0tzeNyeSepQ4B4ILFOA7bYfFbs8yo_H1Q17Yuq94mytIp6ncD5bE-38NNbprQJpArURQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Along the way, we stopped by some old carvings on the rocks (so called petroglypths) from the Thamud, an ancient civilization that existed around 8th century BCE.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We hiked around the desert a little bit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then we stayed in the desert for the sunset. I normally don&#8217;t pay attention to the sunset, but it was pretty amazing to see how fast the sun actually set. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPeMKBhzfINGDoRokDKh3j5CayfsXNtc5Aml88xzq1RWOBB5eeh56sExp5icsoLSQ/photo/AF1QipMLC1uNGzAh03Txy-58U_rY__91LijJEJu-Rea5?key=RXowdEJYVUNCOXU1ZTBYbHFlZWx3bWk5dmZveXJR" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPVrzNu_LRDyiM0e6ixRVNm9h8f64f8CI1XU9wR2hCRajYUcGcrcANlI5aek79evPbnfVxfkUyTQCSlSbmqm3zJQ8DHLzyji_yE6xpu8ZcrGfqmd2l-TYqAZ8XC_dALQrEHSyc1HS_j5ZgwgO4AFm3nxA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For dinner, the staff at the camp prepared a feast for us &#8211; zarb, they called it. It&#8217;s similar to the chicken/lamb on rice meals we had in the previous days, but this one was cooked underground inside a barrel. This was the best meal in Jordan by far!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPeMKBhzfINGDoRokDKh3j5CayfsXNtc5Aml88xzq1RWOBB5eeh56sExp5icsoLSQ/photo/AF1QipPnohtT-F4l9hPfKeyca60yXwyDWJNtZ4Ft011N?key=RXowdEJYVUNCOXU1ZTBYbHFlZWx3bWk5dmZveXJR" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczO0B3SKzylqwLHvkygjkkqwV2oqOPdljz6O3HWvv1pR8ETV8p_zbKVeuruRS45H9IomlqMesGZU5jwU0_m9zMnzkNraqnZTQ_wlKCoHRBGPj305GqijcUnCGyXFnmdVkIuDrwweqJZ5lAGL-QvzyYNBLQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That night, we stayed in a camp in the desert. The best part about it was being able to see stars without all the light pollution in the city, and hanging out with the rest of the tour group around a campfire.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The worst part of it was the actual camping. There was some running water, but no hot water. To make it worse, we had to leave the next morning at 04:00 because we had a couple hours drive back through the Israeli border in time before it closed (what kind of border crossing closes during the day?).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The desert was our last destination in Jordan, before we went back into Israel/Palestine (not to take sides here&#8230;), to visit the Dead Sea and Tel Aviv.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Jerash in the north of Jordan, we made our down all the way down south to Petra. Petra is the most visited attraction in Jordan is the main reason why people want to go to Petra in the first place. The first time I saw it was when I watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as a kid, and at the time, I didn&#8217;t even think about it too much &#8211; I didn&#8217;t even know it was called Petra until years later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always thought that Petra was just a single structure &#8211; the same one that gets shown everywhere, but that structure is just The Treasury that&#8217;s a part of an entire city built in the rocks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOPGlVy0NaXBBCSIKbI6m89NY_t-lkdZS3RUnDSJNVt2yYDnofM9g1Ltvz3TaS_J26ShCxA5WJwv_omA6uMbkxl1EIMfkqkRBPuPR1efyVxWxH5KtXRPbBtiY-OCQNQqAmepGuhSJ9NeP8RyMNGlcPl6A=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the entrance, we walked 30 minutes through a winding gorge formed by a fault line that tectonic forces split apart until we reached The Treasury. Stray dogs followed us every step of the way hoping for scraps of food. Leaving at 6:00 didn&#8217;t help because the only people that the dogs could beg from was us.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipMd9SblcCPDaTJxfwWfE6q7aPN1RYarmUchVBJL?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczNg1MjDSbKBlIEHfffzhgUQh0Xfe6rDepPGOB_V75EQzDuBu8CunxSp34hrA5Pf5zD21gzsvRM3bcLyX1W0bCWJW6RW3eRAJjM2Ckd2wPFrer_NWyzBTnObwzXw7eGTX3jtWiUD3ZsL6cdbaZX0jbd7ug=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipOWVVxuTOrhFnC8vx7TYT0sib_BTYwBIb24hmtB?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOix3HJHs0ArjNLP4j9qUwod85r2rqLDOOpx6yaH7bfgPvR3JMkDyfd04dDrXcbm9AHl0XjrhXfugeCZzNxyCpNnGA825CMMCf-ZzPEAT57XozFZCbwZuKmVqiHL-4LfLffGax61G16-Yvyq8soEhfgqA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We arrived so early we were practically the only people there. We admired Petra on our own without the large crowds of tourists everywhere. We took our time walking up to it, all around it, up the slope to get a better view (nobody is allowed inside it though). We did all of this before the crowds showed up.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipPngPYecWRYSTWj0zuFuYUUHI5cJ8PfA1_TSb39?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMyZlmv_36huADNt3QJrQGvbUlLB_vim6L0jJTnAXi4i4gSg-SLNMMZHCWCu7_mP5O744jo9eM033CbE4ptKTyqwIH45BH6nNrF0PVnWWGif_cC5tOO-GFrpZfUYM-57XMZOU4l70wFhfWPE3cYFUY_PQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Petra was the capital of a kingdom of the Nabataean, a group of nomadic Arabs who established the city as a major trading hub. The Nabataeans constructed massive structures by carving it all out of the sandstone. Although it&#8217;s called The Treasury, the building is believed to have been the mausoleum of the Nabataean King Aretas IV.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area around Petra is also home to the Bedouin people, a group of nomadic Arab people who inhabit the desert regions in northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In the modern times, many have abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and many Bedouin around Petra work as tour guides, offer camel rides, among other things. One of the Bedouin people there is actually the descendent of a woman from New Zealand who married a Bedouin man and wrote about it, called Married to a Bedouin.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipM4dy-b2gwWj_KnozSyYPgQqE9nkT9KuyX5C_b5?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPRA4x_-vFKvFtfAKA9hGoXLMJmIU8iRFsSSz4tR6QXcEk97FhTCKANAfr_MQdtFyeHHFgWAhdH8rUJjjORagaoaJgrBJ0MTX1rTUF_yOh5hdyk21Yn8EoP-YBCkInKcAJlcFQkDiybuMopFwlq-QpPqA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area is over 250 square kilometers, something I totally didn&#8217;t expect (because I totally did not do my research before I went). I&#8217;m not too big on hiking and I was totally not prepared for a hike that day &#8211; I would have totally brought more water, and more food along with me that day. Despite that, I hiked up the 900 or so steps to the monastery anyway, while getting hassled by vendors trying to sell me their junk. Temperature-wise, the temperature shot up to a whopping 20 degrees Celsius from the 0 degrees Celsius just two days before. My body did not like that.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipPVozKvhd5KoY4EUEwbT8SllZvZkPufO3wVqX0G?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczO0J4ZUqPRfphZTxOQcefXME_RoL8r03OLuFqCHOXxDUOkX0LXHrNPHzl3K694HXC0XhZMWNcy3Fn_u6udLAhY907S9UO8I-Acmw0mHuYEcW-sJV39H3S7gsZueJB_13uCCnPC3U7SWQubmzxY1JrRwHA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We spent about 8 hours in Petra, walking along the rock faces, seeing the ancient ruins, hiking up the hill, but if I had more energy I totally would have hiked up the other trials for even better views of the area.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipPXfF3hhmGaObiG6X1t6JiMVZ5Eqb6HDlCG0d-J?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOvM8w4yrXYL4D2fILr3NwZmFlMNZos8-uPTNVvqWuiXTqXKNe3wr6GWWFDS92poaByJca4AQ-lOWJ9miJhsEYvJdQRLlDdNzJUapQvvTWKL4VTTOznkfxMacQ6jgdY15VhL5ffOenkqfKQy8Q9cmI43w=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For dinner we had mansaf, probably the national dish of Jordan. It&#8217;s a delicious dish made with lamb and rice dish mixed with a yogurt sauce! This tasted even better than the chicken rice dish we had the day before. I had no idea that lamb and yogurt was such a great combination. It was a great meal to refuel after such a long day.</p>
