<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Haridwar and Rishikesh are both considered to be holy places in Hinduism. Both of these places are mentioned in Hindu legends, and both of these places are situated along the Ganges River, and is considered sacred.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the banks of the Ganges in Haridwar, people congregate to bathe themselves in the holy water of the Ganges. There were even naked little children doing the same. Since my trip here somewhat coincided with <a href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2019/10/04/kanwar-yatra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kanwar</a>, there were people (the ones in orange) here collecting water for their pilgrimage. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM_1P1nFkCGv6Tif1O8jQLXpfZslVqhAp0M5E1tnY96jrVNzNFzXrwAkxGDRbZ6mA/photo/AF1QipPS3cVghr9IvLmEvTX_CyzJkUfrimSFbsWmkE_8?key=M2RiSVdvRGdjRkpqd1BjeElqLXhiQ0l4WVRva2Fn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/PtXZYOh9k5LM_coao5-Nwgf-QvFGqd24g1etm7Oben493anM19yyNlNd0qVFZiWH0zxb0y8xfX58l2aLB2fCnSIajUIsJpZI-VA_HEBG08p9vrn_jSXfucZxxc6B7I5xhZiBceHxOYvFi8hliJsWRVTxAKoEB1dz1DTlC1-oqfrlo7s_m8NZa78chfQG-NDfrrz4USE5OrKYl2gHs8fBbDNeLkkfuVp5Nt7gEN84nO5SMTiUBIR_E8GX0UEF1upes-5yxF6udxBmLTX9heyoyjmlwSuA32jZnoieCMyLiWmeOJXNntsD49tOCINT5Dntbadiuq9s0sVBx0OXTqHT3Y5zGk_agmwVU4b7otnmDjqc99JGxbCz_2S3MR4sgQ4NXPO8Qm7AS3VQlHqvUXxbrbpnAuTxvQpb7l34ttfpUwcUNV2TXF4LkutkgoRb6s8jUJlaqgLEj5bc31Mo1nYrd_gbV8F_29UcrEg2MUaHCcFY-krh3APNJfX21182Vq_RZRV3P-rswkdqxV3kD7hlNDE_haaVdGaR_c4O0EB5YfKiDNygn13IRf6LKrHQaag95ScQ7S-Sgkra67QGACLjU-m_DwojkD8NCieonnQBiS7wHfGk0XdTzJ1h3SCc-cyUf0aFiz18ySXmi_klqZ2ie8u1isN-1FeekWwnlhTW65IfGVrhWp9kXja2NaFkBKjA7ZPhALwgvZEgjWFMcqC89LO9p7l6q6vcbPps8pWUq4izI9hI=w1464-h824-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I seriously question the cleanliness of the water with so many people swimming in it and the constant stream of garbage that the locals throw into the river (at one point, I saw a rat run across the street in front of me in broad daylight). Despite this, the water is still considered holy.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMwfCFHF5-pmISyLRPEGwDazQ-gQIvf9CLUNzyCF3viV3j59bTEviYvM1fmhF5jFA/photo/AF1QipO97TcM_l3fiInpd0Sog2R9XwQ4W1t61pKCBchI?key=UUxPYUZvY2VKNmlMVXdoUmhGOVZuOXZzeEQ4a053" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/uRdGX6az4O-JVF333HF42zr46F3Qsuacr3i61K-HYIt771nwxSdoEztzLyFn9JBiPFayo4DIYBC9qAONiiD9m7P0D0BslVFuLbpffzeGUpvuE-UvEMPZ7tQLuAJcWlbFll0pHAxfSfqpoKCKOm952VI7fWsAuRtLt9qhUzVy7H6eYJOnCU1pvGRM_ADCBfZ1BRGMDiTDRq7-_hBEEVsHOLdlNECirO4b6_6Suen7aAkpXLMXCqOghcIhawpHHwVhidUjafXo3j6WTaX4EzKV2um0fBAxuJJsUF8O5z5-GGlk7gGfbtIjyy0GbPYNHGm3t1um4EH4UZb_bKpegg9tyIiZ84ind5q6c9A2f7ytJUg_52Ph3FyXWID_an4_75EBdYZMrCCxcFqI0-O3c6wmRXhzbY3pWUdj2CFWTv2p0hMtKbEwG-KcCy6sdprVBYcO4lO11wSC1dNwjGKux-AFXoI47x7BoieKS9kM8jsRjRxNRWwU8YBYNbhTlfdCYW_tbTVRko-mBu5q3D9z5ed1Q5nDRZOUjvC3OukQddizaobBlCIcoy9loVfqaebliXbKbmmVlT-jFWtfVgnmdQ4Q8KZT3usPDhvxRzOShBVUyN_Fj7QpiIVnWlZSdl4r0rNuzXYXizaF8RDxSLgVHvmXf4ZlX95wmaajfkJE7py1ZjBJM5vN7YXVcM3NQRMb2OQBB9Cdv8q4T8S2T8ZZupl-8z4yLP_iKutZ5qBFzaGw7KWUUdaa=w1464-h824-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Upstream of the Ganges at Haridwar, and situated at the foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh is another holy place to Hindus and is famous around the world as the yoga capital of the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here, a bridge connects the two sides of the river. Both sides of the river have many temples and yoga retreats where travellers from around the world come to learn yoga, and Ayurveda (tradition Indian medicine).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By pure coincidence, I arrived in India at the same time this festival was happening. Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of worshippers of Shiva carry holy water from the Ganges to certain holy places in India. The water is carried via the contraption (also called a kanwar) similar to the one the man is holding in the cover photo. Roads that the pilgrims travel on (in particular the Delhi-Haridwar national highway) are often closed to cars, so traffic becomes super congested.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Kanwar Yatra by day" width="1280" height="720" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/boJBClb2u3o?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many I saw travelled on foot, but some took scooters too. People along the way set up camps for the pilgrims to stay the night and to feed them. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At night there are huge parties dedicated to Shiva, with giant trucks playing music on giant speakers with lights shining everywhere. The festival lasts for five days with the streets blocked and the parties happening for every single day.</p>
