Media technology – Henry Poon's Blog https://blog.henrypoon.com Tue, 04 Oct 2022 22:27:51 +0000 en-US hourly 1 83044199 DVD Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check) https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2010/08/08/dvd-data-error-cyclic-redundancy-check/ https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2010/08/08/dvd-data-error-cyclic-redundancy-check/#respond Sun, 08 Aug 2010 08:17:55 +0000 http://henrypoon.mooo.com/blog/dvd-data-error-cyclic-redundancy-check While trying to back up a DVD that I had, I came across a cyclic redundancy check error that prevented me from reading the disc with DVD Decrypter.  The error means that some of the sectors on the disc are corrupt.  Usually this error is caused by physical damage to the disc (can sometimes be solved by cleaning the disc), hardware (loose cables, or a bad drive), and DVD’s that have been poorly burned to begin with.  I found this to be a little strange since Windows Media Player could play this disc just fine, so I was convinced that I could still back up this disc.  I looked around for fixes for this error and here it is (for DVD Decrypter specifically, although this may work for other programs if the options can be found):

And since it’s been a while since I had burned a DVD, I couldn’t quite remember what to do with the VIDEO_TS folder that I got.  After the files on the DVD have been copied on the hard drive, then you can follow whatever instructions you usually follow to get those files to work as a playable DVD
