Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, is renowned for its vibrant food scene, cultural attractions, and unique urban landscape. The first impression I got from here was how similar it was to Toronto. The streets in Melbourne CBD have the same kind of vibe as Toronto downtown. Their city planning too is kind of similar in the way that their city planning does not use a body of water as the main feature of their cityscape.

Brunch, Magic Coffee, Chocolate, and Pasta Perfection

Melbourne’s reputation for excellent brunches was confirmed at The Hardware Société. I enjoyed a beef brisket with pearl onions and a soft-boiled egg, as well as an ahi tuna dish served with soft-boiled eggs and hummus.

I had heard of Melbourne’s reputation of having a really strong coffee culture, and I was eager to try the local specialty known as a “Magic”. This Melbourne invention consists of a double ristretto (a short, concentrated espresso shot) topped with steamed milk in a smaller cup than a standard latte. The result is a strong, creamy coffee with a rich flavour profile. While the coffee didn’t impress me as much as I expected, I really enjoyed the latte art.

The city’s culinary scene extends beyond coffee. I noticed a trend of adorning dishes with edible flowers, which adds visual appeal and subtle flavours.

I also visited Koko Black, a local chocolatier. While their actual chocolate tasted mediocre, their chocolate with embedded Tasmanian honeycomb stood out. The sweet, crunchy honeycomb added a nice crunchy texture and flavour to the chocolate.

One of the culinary highlights was dinner at Tipo 00, where we tried their pasta tasting menu. The freshly made pasta was cooked to perfect al dente, offering just the right amount of resistance to the bite. Their squid ink pasta was particularly memorable. This striking black pasta had a subtle briny flavour, with a silky texture that paired nicely with seafood. We took some leftovers home and they still had that al dente texture even after going through the microwave. Although I tried some wine pairings, they paled in comparison to the exceptional wines we had experienced at Oakridge Winery. We also attempted to dine at Serai, a Filipino fusion restaurant, but our poor planning meant we were still too full from our earlier meals to fully appreciate the experience.

On a lighter note, we spotted an ice cream shop called “Bing Chillin,” which I thought funny because it’s essentially a reference how John Cena says “ice cream” in Chinese. No idea if it even sells ice cream or whether it’s good.

Oakridge Winery

The culinary highlight was an indulgent four-course meal with wine pairings at Oakridge Winery in the nearby Yarra Valley. In my excitement, I committed a traveller’s cardinal sin – I forgot to take pictures of most of it.

The menu featured dishes that were a symphony of tastes and textures. We savoured duck with celeriac, chard, and blood orange. Another standout was the Smith & Jackson sirloin (local from the Yarra Valley), accompanied by spinach, charred leek, and horseradish. I particularly enjoyed the interplay of the beef’s richness with the sharp horseradish and slightly bitter charred leek. Even the potatoes served alongside were perfectly crisp, adding a satisfying textural element. For dessert, a chocolate torte arrived paired with artichoke ice cream (I was skeptical about the artichoke, but found surprisingly delightful). In addition, we indulged in a silky smooth buttermilk panna cotta served with sorbet.

Being at a winery, it seemed only fitting to opt for the wine pairing. The 2017 Oakridge Blanc de Blancs was a particular standout. This sparkling wine offered crisp multi-dimensional notes of citrus. Too bad this wine isn’t available where we live. For one of the wines, the waitress could point out in the distance where the grapes came from because those grapes came specifically from this plantation as opposed to the other Oakridge plantations in the area.

After our leisurely meal, we had hoped to take a stroll around the winery to walk off some of our indulgence. However, the weather had other plans. Despite it being only 12°C, the cold felt more biting than we expected.

Queen Victoria Market

This sprawling complex houses vendors selling everything from touristy trinkets to fresh produce. While some areas featured items of questionable quality, the stalls offering movie poster prints and art prints of landmarks of different countries interested me the most.

The market’s expansive food section was particularly impressive, reminiscent of markets I’ve visited in other cities like Vancouver’s Granville Island Market or Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market.

Laneways and Arcades

Melbourne’s laneways are a defining feature of the city’s urban landscape. These narrow streets and alleys, once neglected, have been transformed into vibrant pedestrian thoroughfares lined with cafes, boutiques, and street art. I explored Degraves Street, one of the most famous laneways, and was captivated by its European-style atmosphere and array of eateries.

Nearby, The Block Arcade offered a glimpse into Melbourne’s Victorian-era architecture. This elegant shopping gallery, built in the 1890s, features mosaic-tiled floors, a glass canopy, and wrought iron fixtures. Inside, I discovered the oldest tea rooms in Australia and, surprisingly, a Dr. Seuss art store selling high-end paintings inspired by the beloved children’s author’s works.

Flinders Street Station

Flinders Street Station, with its distinctive yellow façade and green copper dome, serves as a major landmark and transport hub. Built in 1910, it’s Australia’s oldest train station.

It reminded me a bit of Toronto’s Union Station in the sense that they’re both iconic transportation hubs of their respective cities.

Motorsport and Automotive Experiences

As a mild Formula 1 enthusiast, I visited the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit at Albert Park. I tried to drive around the track, but found some sections blocked off.

Dutton Garage is a great place to go for car enthusiasts. This rare car dealership and showroom houses an impressive collection of vintage and exotic automobiles. I was particularly drawn to the classic Porsche 911s, with their iconic sloping rear deck, round headlights, and rear-mounted air-cooled engines. The showroom also featured sleek Ferraris and a few McLarens too.

While not available in North America due to market dynamics and potential import restrictions, I got to get a glimpse of these Chinese-made electric cars, that to me had Tesla-like qualities, but at a lower price point, thanks in part to Chinese government subsidies. A cool fact I learned about BYD’s innovative battery technology that they can make batteries that don’t ignite when punctured, potentially allowing the batteries to be integrated into the car’s frame to reduce weight.

We attempted to take the City Circle Tram, a free service that loops around the central business district. We had hoped to learn about the city from the onboard commentary, but unfortunately found it difficult to hear over the noise of the tram and decided to explore on our own instead.

Our exploration also included a leisurely walk along the Yarra River, which winds through Melbourne. On the Sandridge Bridge, it features the “Travellers” exhibit, which is a series glass panels that offer information about the indigenous peoples of Australia and information about the demographics of immigrants (where they’re from, how many there were, why, etc.), reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of the nation. A common theme was that in the 21st century, across the westernized world, we’re being less and less likely to take on immigrants from weaker economic backgrounds.

I spent one of my days in Iceland on a glacier hike at Breiðamerkurjökull. It’s kind of pricey (> $250 USD), but it’s super hard to get to the glacier yourself, unless you know the way, are driving a 4×4 vehicle, and have the gear to hike the glacier. The tours also only have max around 8 people so it feels a bit more private. What I was going to see was this.

The tour started at 9am, and since it was winter, the sun was only starting to rise at around 10am. Our tour guide was a fellow from France who fell in love with an Icelandic girl and moved to Iceland to be with her. Now he works as a tour guide and has aspirations to run his own tour company.

As a part of the tour, we got all the gear. Hiking boots with crampons, an icepick and a harness in case we fell and needed a rope to get back out. I didn’t have real waterproof pants, and the next best thing I had were water resistant bike pants with jeans underneath.

When we walked over large patches of ice, we’d have the crampons on, and when the terrain went back to rocks, we’d take them off. I had no idea that kind of profession paid that much considering he was travelling around Iceland and talked about his Porsche!

That snow eventually turned into heavy heavy wind and rain. As chance would have it, that’s when I needed to fill up my car. I stopped by the gas station to fill up only to realize that my inferior American credit card wouldn’t work on those machines because my card didn’t have a pin set up. The gas station didn’t have an attendant either. Luckily I found another gas station further down the road, and I was able to fill up and continue the rest of my journey.

Another concept car was the BMW GINA. There isn’t a lot of information about this car. I guess it stayed as a concept car.

The museum also had a bonus exhibit for Rolls Royce, which is one of BMW’s child companies. Not really a car I’d buy, but it would still be pretty sweet to own one.

The BMW Museum was pretty interesting and I wish I had booked the factory tour ahead of time. Apparently I was supposed to book the factory tour a few weeks in advance in order to get a spot. That would have made the visit to the museum even better.

Day 173

From watching the TV show Band of Brothers, I learned of the Eagle’s Nest, a surprise birthday gift for Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday. Situated on the ridge on the Hoher Göll (or Kehlstein Mountain) at an elevation of over 1800m in Obersalzburg, Berchtesgaden, the house served as a private retreat for Hitler.

Because this area was so remote and hard to access by train, we chose to rent a car to drive there for a day trip that Saturday. In our group of three, only one person could legally drive. I had lost my driver’s license and my other friend only had a learner’s license. Our car reservation said we were supposed to get a Mercedes A Class (the cheapest car they had with automatic transmission), but we got a Renault Megane instead. I think that worked out better for us though because I think that car was a little bit roomier.

Originally, we were supposed to leave at 9 in the morning, but we had to make a stop at our friend’s house to pick up someone, because he apparently partied too hard and crashed at another friend’s place. He was quite hungover when he got in the car and he stayed that way for pretty much the whole trip. I was invited to that party too, but I didn’t go precisely because I didn’t want to end up like the way he did.

I set a course to the Eagle’s Nest on the GPS and off we went. Originally, our route involved going through Austria, but I had to modify the route such that we stayed in Germany because we didn’t want to have to purchase a vignette (it’s an identifier on the car you pay for that lets you drive in that country if the car isn’t from there).

We all knew that some parts of the Autobahn had no speed limit, but we had yet to see this for ourselves. Near the outskirts of the city, there were still speed limits, but as we got further, those limits disappeared. Although for a lot of the journey there, we couldn’t really make use of that since there were traffic jams all over the place.

The drive ended up taking nearly six hours rather than the four hours that Google Maps told me. And for the whole journey, my hungover friend slept in the back on his side while I chatted with the driver so that he wouldn’t get so bored.

When we arrived, we parked the car near the Berchtesgaden railway station and proceeded to take the bus up (the house itself is only accessible by bus). We left Stuttgart at around 10, and reached the top of the Eagle’s Nest at around 4:30 in the evening.

As the bus went up the mountain, we began to see the view getting nicer and nicer. I guess it was kind of like seeing an airplane lift off and watching the houses below getting smaller and smaller.

The bus dropped us off at the entrance to the elevator up to the main building and when we got out of the bus, we all felt the chilling rain that started. I don’t know what the temperature was at the time, but it felt like it was less than five degrees. Before leaving the house in the morning, I knew it’d be cold up there, but apparently it was colder than I thought. For the whole time that I was up there, my extremities were super cold, but at least the rest of my body was warm enough. Luckily the rain had stopped when we took the gold-plated elevator up to the house itself.

After the end of the war, the house was denazified, and converted into a restaurant. All that remains is the architecture. The house itself isn’t really that amazing looking, but it has historical significance. Also, the view from up there is amazing. What surprised me was how accurate Band of Brother’s portrayed the house. They pretty much built a set that looks exactly like the real thing and even had scenes where they tried to get up the mountain (and that mountain looked really similar too).

There was nothing on the mountain except for this one house. And from there, we could see Salzburg (about 35 km away) and other nearby towns. We could also see the Königssee and other mountains in the Bavarian Alps. Because of the rain earlier, there were still some rainclouds hovering around, and with the rain, we also got to see a rainbow. The best part about that was that we were at so high of an elevation, we got to look down at the rainbow.

We only stayed up there for less than an hour because we had to take the last bus back down, but that was okay though. It was nice for me to be able to visit the Eagle’s Nest and enjoy the view from the mountain (even if it was damn cold). It’s also a place where most North American tourists won’t be able to go because it’s so remote and that there are so many more popular places to go for them.

On the way home, the roads had a lot less traffic than earlier, which let us really try out the Autobahn. My friend had reached the car’s top speed of around 190 to 195 km/h (perfectly legal by the way). The whole time he drove, I had a really strong urge to have a try myself, but I didn’t have my driver’s license. After we gassed up the car, I couldn’t resist the urge anymore and so I drove. We all knew that if anything happened, we’d be pretty screwed. Because of that, I didn’t drive for very long. I probably only drove for about 20 minutes.

Even though there was no speed limit, I felt quite uneasy driving at 190 km/h and it just didn’t feel right. I didn’t really feel that I had control of the car, but that might have been because I hadn’t driven for six months. It was fun while it lasted I guess. Even though our car was going pretty fast, we saw a few Benz’s and Porsches go by at speeds of over 200 km/h. They just zoomed right past us.

After three and a half hours of driving, we safely arrived back in Stuttgart. It was great being able to see the Eagle’s Nest (even if for such a short time). It was one of those places that I had to see before I left Europe. Driving on the Autobahn was great too and now I can say that I’ve done that. It was a great trip.

The City Center

We began our journey in the city center. There we saw much of the historical buildings like the Rathaus and the Frauenkirche. While walking around the city, I saw many people wearing the traditional Bavarian clothing with those really old style German mustaches, like the ones that the Prussian Kaisers used to have.

Hofbraeuhaus

For lunch, we decided to eat at Munich’s famous Hofbraeuhaus. Founded in 1589, it was once the royal brewery, but now it serves as a restaurant and tourist attraction. There, I ate their Surhax’n (salted pork knuckle), a Bavarian specialty. It tasted so delicious, but it was so incredibly fatty. Layers of fat were sandwiched in between the skin and the thinner meat. We also ate a brezel that was almost one and a half feet wide. The ones I eat in Stuttgart are only around 8 inches wide. For our drinks, we each ordered a “Mass” (usually the “ss” is replaced by the beta sign), which was one liter of beer. I think the only people that didn’t drink that were the kids. It also seemed customary for people to write something on the table since every table had graffiti from previous customers all over it. I did the same and wrote Newton’s Second Law, representing mechanical engineers and physicists everywhere. While we ate, there’d be a band playing traditional Bavarian music.

Physics Experiment on the Way Home

While on the back, my friend put his water bottle on the table and every time the train accelerated, the bottle would move due to the inertia. Like the nerd I am, I got the idea of measuring the train’s acceleration. But to do that we also had to know the train’s speed after acceleration. We’d do this with basic vector kinematics. We measured the time it took for the train to travel 200 m, by looking at when the train passed the markers on the side of the track (at least I hope it’s 200 m). We then timed how long the train took to accelerate. Our results: the train travelled at 120 km/h and accelerated at 0.85 m/s^2. It was really nerdy of us to do that, but since we’re all mostly engineers, we found it quite hilarious.

Day 68

During lunch, I spoke with a colleague about how I my work term was going so far. I told him that I didn’t really have a huge interest in Microsystems, but I didn’t hate it either. I feel more or less indifferent towards the subject. Because of this, he asked me what I wanted to do. What field do I want to work in? What kind of work do I want to do? Do I want to stay in research or go into design? I didn’t really know how to answer those questions. This colleague is older than me by probably seven or eight years so I was quite sure that he had been through the same ordeal at some point.

A lot of advice people typically give are similar in the way that they just say to follow one’s own interests. Apart from saying that, he also asked me what my goal in life was. He clarified his question by giving examples such as being super rich, or doing something that people will remember me for when I die. I already knew my answer to this question.

My goal in life isn’t anything grand. I don’t need to be able to afford a Porsche or a Ferrari. I’m not looking to change the world. My goal is just to lead a happy life. Well everyone wants that. But different thinks make different people happy. For me, it’s the idea of leading a chill life, not how many Porsches and mansions I can buy. As I said before, money can’t buy happiness, but the lack of money can’t either. I believe it’s about having enough money to not have to worry about it. Yeah, rich people don’t worry about money, but that’s not what I’m referring to. Take my family for example. My parents own a house, two cars, and are able to send both my brother and me to university. When we go out to eat, we don’t have to worry about the money. I’m not talking about only these things specifically. It’s about not having to worry about every penny being spent. People don’t have to be super rich to do that. In a way, it’s like always having enough money to go out with friends for a few beers. I suppose with a goal like this, I chose the right major. The next question is what field in engineering I will work in.

After I told him the way I wanted to live life, he told me his view on it. He started by saying how he didn’t like staying in one place a lot and likes a change in scenery every now and then. He was born in Germany, but he’s worked in the Netherlands and in Switzerland. By going to all of these places, he’d get a lot of life experiences and moving around is what he enjoyed. He’s following his interests and that is certainly good. He then added when he’s old and sitting on his rocking chair, he will be surrounded by his grandkids that would ask him about his life. He wanted to be able to tell the kids stories of his youth and listen intently and enjoy his stories until the kids get tired and fall asleep, but he would know he lived a fulfilling life if the kids come back again and again to hear him talk about all the adventures in his life.

I never heard anyone put it like that before. Everything he said seemed so profound and I probably did a really bad job replicating that here, but the stuff he said really got me thinking. From something like my future career path, he managed to dwarf that entire issue and expand it to the idea of how to live life. Telling interesting stories to my future grandkids sounds pretty cool to me.

Day 61

People describe Stuttgart as the cradle of the automobile because of the invention of the automobile in this city. Many people also consider the city as the origin of the automotive industry. Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Maybach all produce their cars here in Stuttgart. Even automotive parts giant Robert Bosch Gmbh set up their headquarters in the region. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche both opened a museum in Stuttgart to show off all the cars they designed over the years. In January, I went to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, and yesterday, I visited the Porsche Museum.

The Porsche Museum differs from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in the way that Porsche displayed their sports cars and racing cars more than their other cars. The Porsche Museum is also smaller than the Benz Museum and contains less cars. I thought the cars that the Benz Museum displayed seemed much more interesting, but that has to do with my interest their pre 1950’s cars more than the new Porsche sports cars. One thing I thought was very cool about the Porsche Museum was that they had a car that everyone could sit in. I can’t think of any other time where I’d be able to sit in a Porsche! As usual, I take lots of pictures whenever I go places, but unfortunately, I left my SD card at home, so I had to take all the pictures with my phone camera.

My photo album for the Porsche Museum
