For a lot of Vancouverites, Seattle is a common travel destination for day-trips or weekend trips. Some friends and I decided to take a trip down to visit another friend of ours for the weekend. After going on this trip, I’ve realized again how much I enjoyed travelling around even if this trip was somewhere close to home. Even though it can get tiring to walk for over 20 kilometers in a day, but it doesn’t matter because there’s so much to see and do. It reminded me of my previous travels and how free I felt while I was travelling.

It was quite quiet in the car on the way there as the two girls in the back slept while the guys in the front didn’t talk much (I was busy finishing up my homework for a course because I forgot to plan my time accordingly). We departed Vancouver at about 8 PM and arrived at my friend’s flat at about 10:30 PM. We spent the rest of the night having some beers and playing Pandemic on its hardest difficulty (it started out pretty mild, but the plague escalated quickly and went out of control).

Space Needle

The Space Needle is probably about the most iconic building in the entire city.

Around the vicinity, there are a lot other tourist attractions such as the Pacific Science Center, the EMP Museum (formerly known as the Science Fiction Museum), and plenty of green space.

We also visited the Amazon campus, which is where our friend was working at. What surprised me is that there wasn’t any huge signage that Amazon was there. The only Amazon sign I could was by staring really hard through the glass into the building lobby.

Just Chilling

We stopped to rest a bit at the lobby of a nearby apartment complex. While we rested, I learned how to play Shuffleboard (albeit badly) and played a game or two.

Seattle Underground

Our next destination was a tour of the underground portions of Seattle. To get to the tour location, we walked through a neighbourhood full of hobos that I would have otherwise avoided at night (it’s relatively mild compared to what East Hastings in Vancouver is like). On one occasion, a hobo asked me if I was ready for the Seahawks game where I promptly replied, “very readys”.

The tour guide told us that where we were in Seattle used to be a lot lower in terms of elevation. After a fire that destroyed the city, the city regraded the land and so all the buildings that used to be above ground were now underground. The tour took us around the underground sections to show the history of the area.

The picture below shows what people use the space for now – storage.

Because of the regrade, sidewalks had to be rebuilt one story higher than before, so city engineers added skylights onto the new sidewalks in order to illuminate the underground areas. On the surface of the sidwalks, one would be able to see the skylights from the other side at ground level.

In the past, the underground area was used for a lot of questionable activities, such as organized crime, speakeasies, prostitution, etc. Because of its history, this area of town is still considered by many locals as the sketchy part of town.

Pike Market

Pike Market feels like the market in Granville Island in Vancouver, but is a lot bigger. I can’t explain it, but for some reason I greatly enjoyed staring at all the seafood.

We happen to visit Seattle on the weekend where there was a football game between the Seahawks and the 49ers to see which team would go to the Superbowl and because of that all over the city, people put up flags with the number 12 in support of the team.
Shiro’s

This restaurant is so popular that when we tried to walk in at 7, to get a spot, the waitress told us to come back at 9. We had heard really good things about this place, so we actually starved ourselves until 9.

My friends encouraged me to try and order in Japanese, so I did. I started by saying to the waitress that I’d try to speak Japanese (私は日本語を話してみます), and then I listed off the food one by one and then success! While it was nothing complicated to do, it was cool doing that anyways.

After lunch, we stayed for a bit longer at our friend’s flat before heading back to Vancouver. Seattle was a much welcome change in scenery and it has further enforced my desire to travel around to different places.

As many people are aware, Karaoke is popular among Asian people. Generally, people go to a Karaoke establishment to enjoy it, but it can also be done at home. Current methods involve juggling a bunch of VCD’s, DVD’s, or even LD’s to get the wanted song. Karaoke establishments have all set up systems for people to use a computer to choose a song from a database (by artist, name, gender, etc.) that will be played on the TV. This set up can be replicated at home.

This guide presents how to mimic the system used in professional karaoke establishments at home. The software this system uses revolves around a Taiwanese program called JetKTV. Much of the content from this guide was drawn from Chinese language websites discussing the usage of this program (scroll all the way down for References). There is little literature on this subject in English and so this guide presents basically an English version of the reference sites plus a few added notes.

The program used is in Chinese, so people who are not fluent in Chinese may have a hard time navigating through the software. Those who are brave enough to continue or have a basic knowledge of Chinese with better English fluency may find it helpful to see English instructions. The Chinese sites on this subject are also written for older versions, and the setup procedure for those older versions are slightly different.

Contents

Proposed Setup

Setting Up JetKTV2010

Inserting A New Song

Inserting A New Artist

Testing

References

Proposed Setup

The proposed setup of all the hardware (TV’s, amps, computer, etc.) is in the diagram below.

The computer will play the chosen Karaoke videos and transmit the video signal to the TV (via extended display like in a dual monitor set up). The computer’s audio will go to an amplifier or a mixer, which is then transmitted to a set of speakers. Microphones are plugged into the amplifier/mixer is well so that the speakers can also play the sound picked up by the microphones. Depending on the hardware, the cables could be different (some TV’s may not have HD output etc.)The computer is the source of all the signals transmitted to the other devices and must be set up with the Karaoke software.

Setting up JetKTV2010

The PC will use the following software:

JetKTV2010 (link)

SongMgr (optional – not helpful on English language PC’s – more on that topic later)

It is helpful to set up the software using a dual monitor setup. That way, it is easier to test without having to go and plug the computer to the TV each time.

Unzip the contents of the JetKTV2010 program in a folder and open JetKTV2010.exe. The GUI buttons are for searching through the database (by looking for the artist, song name, etc.) to find the wanted song. Once a song is selected, it will be added to the list of songs to play just like the software at actual Karaoke establishments. The video will play in full screen on one monitor and the song picker GUI will say on another monitor. To close the program, click on the top left corner of the GUI (hidden button).

Some of the software features in addition to searching and adding songs:

Skipping songs

Fast forwarding, pausing, etc.

Switching from one audio channel to both audio channels (alternating between vocal on/off)

This program reads from a database that contains the song names, artists, language, etc. Therefore, it does not come with songs. Songs must be downloaded separately and added on. These can come from existing DVD’s or YouTube. The next section will explain how to populate the database.

Populating the Database

The SongMgr program mentioned above can add/remove contents from the database, but there are problems with it when using it on English language PC’s due to problems in encoding some of the Chinese characters. Even Microsoft AppLocale fails to rectify the problems. The solution is to use Microsoft Access to open up the database file directly and make changes.

Adding one song can seem like a lengthy process at the first try, but it will get easier as one becomes more familiar with the system.

Inserting A New Song

To insert a new song, one must navigate to the table where the songs are stored and then add an entry to it.

Open Song.mdbin the JetKTV program directory

When prompted for a password, input “tmwcmgumbonqd” without quotes

Navigate to the table Tbl_Song. This is the table that records all the song entries.

Below is an explanation of each column:

Song_ID: numerical identifier for each song (the program lists them as 5 digit numbers starting at 10000)

Song_Title: song title

Song_Singer: each singer has a unique number associated with them (see next section)

Song_Singer (2nd one): the name of the artist in text

Song_Word: number of characters in the song name

Song_Type: a number representing a language (Mandarin,Taiwanese,Cantonese,Hakka Chinese,English,Japanese,Movies,Cartoons,Other in that order starting from 1)

Song_Volume: song volume, but not sure what units they are in. Default value is 70.

Song_Channel: the audio channel that does not have the vocal track. (1-Left, 2-Right, 3-Both)

Song_FileName: filename of the video without the directory

Song_Path: the directory to the file (could use absolute pathing only, but unsure of whether relative paths work)

Song_Create: the time that the song was added in

Song_Count: the play count of a song

Song_Juyin: the Zhuyin characters representing the song title

Song_Stroke: number of strokes in the first character of the song name

Some of the columns can be left out, but that means that it will not be possible to find a particular song using the omitted information. For example, Song_Juyin can be left out for those who dont use the Zhuyin system, and that feature won’t be used for song searching anyway.

To add a song, fill out the following information at the minimum on one row:

Song_ID (must be a unique number and should have five digits)

Song_Title

Song_Singer

Song_Volume (70 is the default)

Song_Channel

Song_FileName

Song_Path

For the Song_Singer information, refer to the next section.

Inserting A New Artist

Artist information is stored on a different table called Tbl_Singer

Open the table called Tbl_Singer

Fill out an entire row to add a new singer (see below for the reference for each information column)

Below is an explanation of each column:

Singer_ID: unique identifier for each singer (this is the unique ID that is to put inserted in the Song_Singer column in Tbl_Song)

Singer_Sex: singer gender (0-Female, 1-Male, 2-Group/Band)

Singer_Name: artist name in text

Singer_Juyin: the Zhuyin characters representing the artist name

Singer_Stroke: number of strokes in the first character of the artist’s name

Testing

One a song or two has been entered into the database, one can test it by opening up the JetKTV program and trying to pick a song. It is working when one screen shows the video playing and another screen showing the JetKTV GUI.

One can also try clicking the button labeled “導唱” to test if the audio channels are set up properly (toggling it turns on and off the vocals).

The next step would be to plug in the computer with all the television components and then trying it again. Once everything works, the system is ready.

Day 181

The day after my friends and I went to Berchtesgaden, we went to Wilhelma, the Stuttgart Zoological Botanical Gardens. It has a fancy name, but it basically is a zoo with exhibits for other life such as plants and insects.

Seeing as how I’ve never been to a zoo before (at least I don’t remember), but I have been to the safari and Biodome in Quebec, this trip to the zoo was quite interesting for me.

To get in, my friends used their student ID’s to get a student discount, but I however, didn’t have my ID anymore since I lost it. I ended up using a letter of enrolment from my university to prove my student identity. The best part about doing that was that I managed to communicate what I wanted speaking only German.

When we entered, we looked on the park map to see the best route we could use to see everything, but since the zoo had a plan for that, we decided to follow it. It had a strange system of showing visitors which path to follow. The intended path was marked by a yellow elephant with a direction to walk in and the path back to the beginning was marked by a blue elephant. We tried our best to follow this route, but we didn’t really manage too well. We still ended up diverging from the path.

Our first destination was a group of greenhouses that had plants from all over the world, but in particular, we saw a lot of cacti. For some reason, the people at the zoo really like cacti.

Moving on, we saw a flock of flamingos just chilling there. They didn’t really do much except just stand there and drink water. We did get to see some flamingos standing on one leg just like what a lot of animal documentaries show.

Moving further along, we saw a peacock just wandering around the park. We didn’t get to see it open its tail, but it was still pretty cool to see one live. It kept trying to move away from the little kids that kept trying to chase it, but I still got a picture. Apparently, according to Wiki, the umbrella term for the animal is “peafowl”, while the name “peacock” only refers to the male peafowl.

While we walked around the zoo (while deviating from the yellow elephant path), we came across a lot of signs that pointed to the “Titanenwurz”, which in English means “Titanum”, the tall and large plant local to Sumatra that has a smell similar to rotting corpses when it blooms. Apparently, this zoo holds the world record for the tallest Titanum plant during blooming.

Moving further along, we ended up indoors and the only lights that illuminated the inside were a set of blue lamps inside a display. In the display, there were bats. Some of them hung there while others flew around randomly. They didn’t shriek or make any noises for echolocation or anything like that though. They were also bigger than I thought they were.

Moving further along, we came across plants that reminded me very much of Pokémon. I guess the Pokémon were modeled after this plant.

The next part was the best part of the zoo: monkeys. The monkeys here were really small and all they did was jump around from one branch to another. While I was taking pictures of them, I moved my camera a little too close and it tried to grab my camera strap. I felt its fingers brush against my hand before I moved my camera away. While watching the monkeys, I kept hearing little kids yelling “baby monkeys!” in German.

There were other monkeys too, but those weren’t as interesting because they mostly just sat around eating (especially the apes). Next, we moved on to see the more exotic animals – the big cats. For some reason, these animals weren’t really in the mood to do anything. Instead of sitting around like the monkeys, the big cats pretty much were just lying there. None of the cats did anything special except the leopard when it got up to eat.

Next we saw other exotic animals like okapi (never even heard of this animal before) and various African/South Asian animals. It was pretty cool to see an elephant duck down to grab food with its nose to eat. I’ve never seen anything like that before. The giraffes were cool too, but they weren’t quite as tall as I expected, but maybe these ones are of a different species or are just younger. The rhino wasn’t very cool either since the zoo staff got rid of its horn, but maybe it’s safer that way. But then again, a pissed off hippo could probably destroy a rhino.

The zoo also had some less interesting animals such as cows, chickens, lambs and various other farm animals that people eat on a regular basis. This was probably the most boring part of the zoo. These animals smelled absolutely terrible and weren’t very interesting to look at. The cows here were only penned in by a electrified rope (which my friend touched and received quite a nasty shock – that was quite hilarious). The next bunch of animals were saw were the bears. Seeing the bears promptly reminded me of Stephen Colbert’s famous quote, “bears are godless killing machines!” They do look quite menacing, except for the polar bear, who didn’t really feel like doing anything at all. Maybe it was too hot or something.

UPDATE: It looks like the jumper that can be used to reset the CMOS. By putting this over the two jumper pins, the CMOS is shorted and reset.

The basics for any network based on *nix hosts is the Transport Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) combination of three protocols. This combination consists of the Internet Protocol (IP),Transport Control Protocol (TCP), and Universal Datagram Protocol (UDP).

By Default most of the users configure their network card during the installation of Ubuntu. You can however, use the ifconfig command at the shell prompt or Ubuntu’s graphical network configuration tools, such as network-admin, to edit your system’s network device information or to add or remove network devices on your system

Configure Network Interface Using Command-Line
You can configure a network interface from the command line using the networking utilities. You configure your network client hosts with the command line by using commands to change your current settings or by editing a number of system files.

Configuring DHCP address for your network card
If you want to configure DHCP address you need to edit the /etc/network/interfaces and you need to enter the following lines replace eth0 with your network interface card

sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces

# The primary network interface – use DHCP to find our address
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Configuring Static IP address for your network card
If you want to configure Static IP address you need to edit the /etc/network/interfaces and you need to enter the following lines replace eth0 with your network interface card

sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.3.90
gateway 192.168.3.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.3.0
broadcast 192.168.3.255

After entering all the details you need to restart networking services using the following command

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Setting up Second IP address or Virtual IP address in Ubuntu
If you are a server system administrator or normal user some time you need to assign a second ipaddress to your Ubuntu machine. For this you need to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and you need to add the following syntax.Below one is the only example you need to chnage according to your ip address settings

sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces

auto eth0:1
iface eth0:1 inet static
address 192.168.1.60
netmask 255.255.255.0
network x.x.x.x
broadcast x.x.x.x
gateway x.x.x.x

You need to enter all the details like address, netmask, network, broadcast and gateways values after entering all the values save this file and you need to restart networking services in debian using the following command to take effect of our new ipaddress.
After entering all the details you need to restart networking services using the following command

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Setting your ubuntu stytem hostname
Setting up your hostname upon a ubuntu installation is very straightforward. You can directly query, or set, the hostname with the hostname command.
As an user you can see your current hostname with

sudo /bin/hostname

Example
To set the hostname directly you can become root and run

sudo /bin/hostname newname

When your system boots it will automatically read the hostname from the file /etc/hostname
If you want to know more about how to setup host name check here

Setting up DNS
When it comes to DNS setup Ubuntu doesn’t differ from other distributions. You can add hostname and IP addresses to the file /etc/hosts for static lookups.
To cause your machine to consult with a particular server for name lookups you simply add their addresses to /etc/resolv.conf.
For example a machine which should perform lookups from the DNS server at IP address 192.168.3.2 would have a resolv.conf file looking like this

sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf

Enter the following details

search test.com
nameserver 192.168.3.2
