<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The nice thing about driving in Belgium and the Netherlands is that the road quality is super good. There were hardly any potholes anywhere and the speed limits are higher than what I&#8217;m used to. The speed limit on most highways is 130 km/h in the Netherlands and is 120 km/h in Belgium, while where I am it&#8217;s 112 km/h (70 mph). The signage is super clear, albeit in Dutch/Flemish/French depending on where we were. Also, having a decent base in German and French vocabulary allowed me to guess the meanings on road signs, which was nice. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1280" height="720" src="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=1280%2C720&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4888" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?w=1527&amp;ssl=1 1527w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=1024%2C576&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.henrypoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Road_Trip_Day2.png?resize=171%2C96&amp;ssl=1 171w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our second day takes us to Oosterscheldekering, Ypres, and Dunkirk.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Oosterscheldekering (Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We began our day two heading back into the Netherlands, to a network of storm surge barriers, designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding. Large sets of doors can open and close to control the water flow coming in from the ocean. They&#8217;re important because most of the Netherlands sits a few metres above sea level or lower, and thus are prone to flooding. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="Oosterscheldekering" width="1280" height="720" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/28LxAcynF8Y?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we drove in the area of Oosterscheldekering, we encountered a lot of windmills spinning noticeably in the wind. And I wondered where all the old traditional windmills went, as in the ones with a tower made of brick with four rectangular fan blades . Netherlands has a stereotype of having a lot of them. We barely saw any of them and then it occurred to me that most of them were probably upgraded to use modern technology.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ypres</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our next destination, Ypres, is known for the many battles that occurred there during the First World War, where the Germans introduced chemical weapons in the battlefield in the form of poison gas. During the course of the war, the town was destroyed, mostly by artillery fire.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPdQfgJH63a783DNAzB1UMRs9eRv2ZLaYc-C8gVoQmHrtLElma5Pydyf4leBOEXBw/photo/AF1QipMQCSxpy8mt9paq_KZX9JnaXPg1FQ5OK1ND8aWo?key=ZUViTU1qWWN0bmxwZlpPUXpvQkRvVVFsZFYwQTZB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/la1pEdzxNsjNq_5-mzf58PUIFpTlmOWN4cGJvfXCH7TlIdBooN6DJCZ-euUgGb2bWr6Acy3ie3lTwHtWsuE6Uw0A9ZNZGwFDHkkboyl7DzgsUii8MVhz8NPaHUin6xtOCWYLxT6O6c75rK9zvCnSzvW3wrgaFVoM3sxumOXipU9dpsFzKADsYN1jyUv7wbW0aqNmJPRQ1lbf1gBSYMcflFt_BfepCebop7E6TFcLNiA_mkPRog9iLc3br0eF7Hqx8TjP_rNQmk9pwKqzTp6BKShDbizzw4qohZLup34OXrP0s_kU6mjQ-Sg1oUjQoTTlt1L0p-BFvIKmrelFwK57H6TJS-DjSAoqrVBureTdYqTVqZPXBHMb5-zLhvvqzdSORX_LUrXEo8Go_OQhfysjnFQmpg5neDwPmfhkCjP9aDjWIxutBkSqQQ25SbUI9lUJ7KqLBbozWnsTaiIQFPZgwT_3kPBZqoR0FO2vItEEN-pn1F6euFyuJpewzBpWjIbdOdNld3u2UGJtwdxxtjrA-8PUJtQaFnfFp0Kx98HYTbnyE2bIY1rpNv_NF9rNbKUsrmtc-8cmoNHsXbZduHjtegAm1jXDp9G8gvHOefYd8WzUFwZoxtFB6Nz62GPquAYFafmjYJEZ1SPE7UUiFlqZpmWlf9TIYW_spjCePPVNhSVwi54ERqZmfpkNzHvaXrnPfBLPKaJuO91sevE2KYY6aBNlyHO7KLxzjzNbWv1MZXMHfl8wKg=w1320-h743-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The town was rebuilt after the war using German war reparations, with the main square following the original design as closely as possible. The In Flanders&#8217; Fields Museum (the big building in the above picture) is a museum dedicated to the First World War.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Dunkerque (Dunkirk)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our final destination for the day was the French port city of Dunkirk, known for the role it played during the evacuation of Allied forces from France. The Germans had achieved a breakthrough in France and had surrounded the bulk of Allied forces around Dunkirk. The German airforce was tasked to destroy these forces, so that the Germany army could conserve its ground forces for other operations, but the Germans failed to destroy the Allied forces and over 338000 soldiers were successfully evacuated to Britain.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPTPqwaY3LnXeU4ZVmq1gSmsCvqBMixpJNIwJI2CvS9tcnSvPjdXxJkBcpylfA4oQ/photo/AF1QipNWCPL-oXd68oyinNaRXyEilxdszbXzZtEP7rZm?key=emdXRkVDM2xYV0NzYTl5Q3phcHRuVGVlN0RsbXln" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OhPYoMzFqx_avvbRI24V-DFeSAVCfG9H6NsmJ8_tE-RUiRngTepWZwMhONAjTEytXhgE3BwFERJc-eEBY1xZ5IekFNWs-42dkCxH_2-iO2ynv6mJjvM34_g9fyitOFIrgEdizWshodnyKO256-vL5rrOjECk225AygHyj-C5cW-_ggCCD5fOvtFPTu2oYXPNV_eT8hh7Qgb3ccT5YShyH-vtvJrxaYW7QNdllzjWgkBmYbUJPwdDVv62QeDIz2d1PfB64cSY2sRyalXYdlkTOANjBxkvMv0buWVrSFgW9E7Kl7BrwwUyeScvoQJti0nNmPgi6Z3eBC2DJIqhowVm_5q0azcBwxIdjVJyDagWcAbCEt-RxxkGV8TufaPgy6k_ELZRquLrJ7bXBHJ_jIaadTYn7DfjVEgB-FsG1hREVbQgfiRDWB9-cxAKPam-htEasItYf9-WC13lvEgEGi35_rZIy3bU_DAwCnZ3phpvDF6fm-kndtvZDnzv95AyuzFoUlbaSjpiEoQ-nybHzTTBSC9RHbVOYYzw74mg-I6qkHPLasG_y_UMFGaelNsKcYSSIh9A7Ww-aDwkoY2WFIdTRlh7LkdCDKDnCeDe_ZV66SsWTHDsImw9O4hPJkhZS-rL_al3oT52lf7RysVxAVmBqt5jTN11jTqxkvK0i4C-cs5ce4gdQ8vtllNtHeBFCE8U6kaaFKttTokb_oYx8JHvI89OCiV51XkPu1TcztQdZD80Z7LWOA=w1320-h743-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That night, the locals were having a festival, called the &#8220;Bal du Chat Noir&#8221;, probably loosely translated as &#8220;The Black Cat Ball&#8221;. It&#8217;s so obscure that as of this writing, an English Wikipedia article for this festival doesn&#8217;t even exist. The French Wikipedia describes it as a festival to celebrate the opening of the carnival season (i.e. the Christian Carnival), and that it&#8217;s local to Dunkirk.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPTPqwaY3LnXeU4ZVmq1gSmsCvqBMixpJNIwJI2CvS9tcnSvPjdXxJkBcpylfA4oQ/photo/AF1QipPtJSr2h6yQsZpLawKw_GXtFsUcblpbAIYCWJys?key=emdXRkVDM2xYV0NzYTl5Q3phcHRuVGVlN0RsbXln" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/HQoG0qB123jjBYaTfRInoOx3bINaHB1A7ppkrzPL-DCcsAnuDv6Q-uu13z4FYhGK5kFSzoCpLKpbBMcDQA4PQihoW1VFUnoxzU9890T13j24hFj__yJi3rCjXF8hbTUJK-Xk8BKD0uyH-IBMVpMTLAXHaQeuzbHv10MpkuTWsvxwoM_UkwsFaPQEYer3Ky89bAvjOEscXXlhmp1B7HEd4e4Mayj1DM7drnPwBRwUlIauGQtpjctMJwEJLivMXwH9A2Mm7XWskr3s6gIW6kkq0xR9x1-7zwkpyLeO8CWqMGwla0o96r9hu-VV-YT9Q840nPFPsle7SflYaBdfhu93OjADY3C7WlScqX3CYLnxuMWr2BrPIkNUm02mb9GYTpVJYmNfKZiKrB_msnZ5lssMSVMVR8zIyw8U0fLzTy54lWJLw-uZszgiSUItlnOYEd22eg12mwSx-qY3jippIbVl2wOA10VfCv2MJC_pbTjpeCsPNC7QvdyqJDjyI_eKWBzKiTsvMJ93okaftThlBR4fK38cr7nFjlrP6u5kMdJvoViF9vZBoz49VB2pAG9MCc-281ZvLNmmf8cwimhyWye-46WdRzKWqGmhlocnS30rhSDhSMXEb1HDfyx82XINtU4UX_MOYDWdzuYu_uacMHg50vp7lx2HFz8wKvR0mGa_6pwmrlN3g7N-rSO4FLBcVkL66eAQSKkTmbOLRS6Q4073Kc4_TyZG96X0r0byJB7oPx7guvkbTw=w1320-h743-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From what I can tell, it&#8217;s kind of like the Carnival in Cologne, where people party in the streets dressed up in costumes. There&#8217;s no shortage of reasons for people to party!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stay tuned for day 3!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I first thought about going to Kathmandu, without having done any research, I thought there&#8217;d be a lot of mountains, glaciers, lakes, crisp mountain air and such, but nope, it&#8217;s actually a giant bustling city. It&#8217;s not quite like a city full of skyscrapers and things, but a vast sprawl of low rise buildings. I would have liked to go out of the city, but I didn&#8217;t have enough time.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMk4-KxghgwGhJgrnzcvRPgcRwzuCuvoKRW9uXa-flXrS2RpTt6Pb4Wr81FQnw7Yg/photo/AF1QipPpUMEt2slKeXa0mEECrJMxOAb_avMT6pRg1wHY?key=QThFcnV3WWlCaWJ2eVpkbWMteXVVcE1rR2Y1ZzR3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/FopWEyXbhfWlBb_G8cbcmPZy2G9J4F4T4JKee13OYAQX7bsN356pvYhAEflxm31ffCI-Uwhm6n08u3nayvdmEAoPOrwVepfmsiuYLS-bm9o2mFQDi4d3J1HbiGZ0lrvYNhlmniyLPlXzLQ5ciY7tkOuBgzjOvAWiW9KqLz7Keh8mktuYL_82mb9FE1gLkfaacvgYhSS9Ng5nZQ3gau8XbNSAKVnmP0TyXFnPDXGVN1dcz537jKij2r5fQxAy4iEvOO0jd6C2cet2AM78lioEoLCjID4FhhPKSOWWolKv0FTkp5pyh97qVVHTbUlClgjiFlSBqem2y8OmLaZRV0QYNoTvnsjsddTnSXO6krKvIXWdWn3DfPKMsiJcaC6LSbcNJ5sFsUVs5sYXOtg1BDwmX7u9xxL5KbMVJTHJfosx0KoSaHjiRuI6qb33PtXe1Qze17SGDuvsTNiuQv--Qtz_eulZroUezFymxMUlHJeUglm9AUQhCAonfILXVyKgwaCED0verKY7LTIiATwWU4mneUjVhEUHIGJPxDgSJgN2jKYI8n8JIgPirgKCNGbqEpB4ihuWhBPz9BGpm0tGsaZx25Baxqi4AGnu1ONW0Cgot35zo37TgTX5awcugYmwjWfYGZDGrKgoOuhyKuZEtZ-gcHIOhxVoABRZaNz20wLZUrft2MnCs8ELKGzkHKyPouMmODqgRqV5XKZu6v5vCIDIOMyIW9kd6LMnn3CHfvNnQuEi3jsM=w1464-h824-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s reminiscent of other developing Asian nations. People are riding around in motorbikes, pedestrians cross the street by weaving through vehicles, and there&#8217;s so much traffic that it kicks up a ton of dust. Cars here often don&#8217;t have AC and more often than not have hand cranked windows. The official language is Nepali, but many people speak Hindi or at least know some words. It&#8217;s timezone is also quite interesting&#8230; Its offset is 5:45 from UTC meaning it&#8217;s got a timezone that shifts in 15 minutes instead of a whole hour. And I thought India&#8217;s 30 minute shift was annoying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Durbar Square once held the palaces over the kings that ruled over the city. In the surrounding area, there are also some courtyards and temples. The architecture of the temples is reminiscent of temples in China, which makes sense since Buddhism is quite prevalent in both countries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most shocking thing to me in Nepal, is that as a part of their Hindu and Buddhist traditions, people worship &#8220;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="kumari (opens in a new tab)" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumari_(goddess)" target="_blank">kumari</a>&#8220;, young prepubescent girls that represent the manifestation of divine female energy. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>The worship of the goddess in a young girl represents the worship of divine consciousness spread all over the creation. As the supreme goddess is thought to have manifested this entire cosmos out of her womb, she exists equally in animate as well as inanimate objects</p><cite><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumari_(goddess)" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wikipedia</a></cite></blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Within Durbar Square, in an almost non-descript brick building, the kumari appears from time to time within the windows that look into the courtyard of the building, but no photography is allowed. I had randomly stumbled upon this building only because there were so many people around it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Boudhanath is one of the largest Buddhist stupas Nepal, and it&#8217;s architecture is unlike anything in the city, so it&#8217;s quite prominent. The prayer flags have five colours, which represent different &#8220;elements&#8221;: earth, water, fire, air, and space. The elements are also represented as a part of the structure with the base as earth, the dome as water, the square platform as fire, the spire as air, and the umbrella as space. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Pashupatinath Temple is situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, and is a Hindu religious place. Where the fires burning in the picture is the actual place where cremations happen. Within the area are a collection of different temples, but I wasn&#8217;t allowed to visit them because I&#8217;m not a Hindu. I never thought I&#8217;d ever be discriminated for my religion (or lack thereof)!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the American Thanksgiving week, I visited some family out in Montreal. I spent most of my time with family, so I didn&#8217;t do as much touring around as I had liked to. Besides, this wasn&#8217;t my first time in Montreal (<a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2012/07/22/old-montreal-and-mount-royal/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2012/07/24/random-wandering-around-montreal/" target="_blank">here</a>).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For one reason or another, I never made it out to Saint Joseph&#8217;s Oratory the other times I visited. According to my cousin, &#8220;it&#8217;s one of the best free attractions in Montreal&#8221;.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Saint Joseph&#8217;s Oratory is Canada&#8217;s largest church, and it enshrines a statue of Saint Joseph within it, I wasn&#8217;t able to take a good photo myself of the the oratory in all its beauty, so here&#8217;s one from Wikipedia.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="https://i2.wp.com/upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/69/Oratoire_Saint-Joseph_du_Mont-Royal_-_Montreal.jpg/1280px-Oratoire_Saint-Joseph_du_Mont-Royal_-_Montreal.jpg" alt=""/><figcaption> By Paolo Costa Baldi &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=17469968" target="_blank">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=17469968</a> </figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We weren&#8217;t allowed to go inside the main nave (where the people sit in church) of the basilica since it was closed for an event. But we were able to go to the Crypt Church on the floor below.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOOVixZTF-Qg3xYQpaudHPzqb4PV3ZQ_uFISp2_jxhUboCFuR52DM8j6IEqAhhYWQ/photo/AF1QipPIMRh1zjeEJSzFe83VxJdm66dmYM5fB9ZjVfdL?key=TWc0ODVBU3U0TTRWb0dBaHJXMk9JdzFtWWdYdWJR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/WYPaqtRj5Ks3kdKA1dP47rmZx3zP3slehBP5k6kkMaVxHHokHNSg7CyKw0qv9xNB9Nb8wUT1VFkngC47Az6HAtJhiW27CFuqsoWnmFAjs8aC14u4vyXsiKSfJBaT17G2m6CFz5MqLY4_Z6Bv1luJ5EHK9OjOA83s-BZrtnep8ePIwbS107qhZY8C5wNqTuSc-83xR1CfMA3VK4_WRn2qfpEmN68f5CJmBLutFe7Z9x3Lstm06QeBAkKY4GS9bqPPAGVW6k-Ooa88GJV_QWEuQ_RsaCs1FMorxLCX0masGcS5IsFFECsPXbmvnSaPvhlF3aSm9MUK0ngd2o50OMRPLRAScSW2FaeL612do-U8uEJpwoIGARj4e0ElxWDLBL7p9CpDWuAAEe445clOtgve4I968JZg2ssKsUs_jWG6orcY1FA1QCdw2TlRmoaUOrCBF4OkvzcAS3o7VB4FZqOleHlEBODO3IvbxT-i3DCiJR2C2Cv2v6LXNqtwZmI_Db6NFTzV3cvcUe6OqyMqkZZnfmufUNpB2iAUTr9XdC9KPkATxF7BaZhCtSuZ2BL7FnCF-0b6tiDjAen7IdQsBwURYJkOoWFNdXNmEtor56wayV7NcjpGyiiLOGnOeR_c_-HYsx8yrssNdINZBo1cKQ9wVhGncUw6897wg5eTRgJH3E22oRiXmrRtSXDw5B4aj2UA2vxVucBFck46hzdOy50=w1680-h945-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The statue of Saint Joseph is located in the Votive Chapel. People all over come here as a pilgrimage to pay their respects.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next place we went to was Old Montreal. It was pretty dead, even for a Sunday afternoon. It makes sense since I&#8217;m way past the busy tourist season! In the summer, all the restaurants set up patio seating outside, but it was too cold to do any of that in November.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A day after getting back from my work trip in USA, I went on my next adventure to South Korea and Japan. As a part of the trip, my friend and I went to the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The DMZ separates North and South Korea along the 38th parallel and is a result of the end of the Korean War. To this day, tensions between North and South Korea are high. On the tour bus ride there, our passports were checked multiple times as the UN had to account for each person who would be travelling in a potentially dangerous area.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bd/Korea_DMZ.svg/681px-Korea_DMZ.svg.png" alt=""/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Demilitarized_Zone#mediaviewer/File:Korea_DMZ.svg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&#8220;Korea DMZ</a>&#8221; by Rishabh Tatiraju is licensed under <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CC BY-SA 3.0</a></p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Joint Security Area at Panmunjom</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most worthwhile part of the trip was to be able to visit the Joint Security Area in Panmunjom or the so-called &#8220;Truce Village&#8221;. This is the part of the DMZ where people from the North and South can see each other face-to-face. Travelling here allowed me to see a piece of history that I was already interested in.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOyu6YKchv-rj5bfOXxfQ1Xw-grK8IlBhkA8CX8tVNApsgRCC9-ml0WkM9vaIaWog/photo/AF1QipMnzgqqayOcDUprvh-ku6184B5mlhczN0gsM5tL?key=R2wzMlc3WWtZNWxMTW9nblJ1OEdqeGNRX2tVODh3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/NeRzTBEbFxb0G1FJNbH7Ie40ONZReD11KmCoVkm3kIKq=w1358-h764-no" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before going in everyone had to sign an agreement, where one passage says, &#8220;The visit to the Joint Security Area at Panmunjom will entail entry into a hostile area and possibility of injury or death as a direct result of enemy action.&#8221; Luckily, the US soldier informed us that it was &#8220;highly unlikely for anything to happen&#8221;. We were also told to not make any gestures toward the North Korean guards or any tourists on the other side.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The blue buildings are conference buildings where meetings with both sides take place. They are placed such that half of the building lies on each side of the border. The gray/white building is the Panmungak, a North Korean building. On the first door on the left, a North Korean soldier stands on guard. Concrete slabs show the separation between the two sides. I guess this means I&#8217;ve technically been to North Korea &#8211; at least for a few minutes.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Third Infiltration Tunnel</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another destination we went to was the Third Infiltration Tunnel, which had the potential of being used to attack the South and its location was revealed by North Korean defector. This was known because there were clear signs of holes drilled in the rock for the next blast, and the holes were aimed toward the South side.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To prevent injury, everyone had to wear hard hats &#8211; which was a really, really, really good idea since there was a low ceiling and I hit my head at least a dozen times. Unfortunately, we weren&#8217;t allowed to take any photographs underground.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a place where one can look toward North Korea from afar &#8211; but photos are not allowed past the yellow line for fear of being mistaken for sniper scopes. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dorasan Station is one of the few places one can actually go to Pyeongyang, at least before 2008. Our tour guide happened to be named Dora, so when we got to Dora Mountain she said, in her accented English, something like, &#8220;Look! This is my mountain!&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Salt Lake City is home to the headquarters of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints</a> (aka The Mormon Church or LDS Church). During the day, visitors are allowed to visit the Temple Square and get free guided tours by members of the church (except for inside the temple itself). My co-worker and I had a bit of time in Salt Lake City before flying back to Vancouver, so we decided to make a stop here.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw/photo/AF1QipMYbrBEyWakxTEtuvgL3AZYe8WpZkGeXqjN4BVy?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVt-ZLb2hVwOADCP3HMGNCWzftOI7MWSe5rjIfJrkirXdxZA8v_QNE47SZKP3vk1nMwcMF12vXWUwAdDfcpmqdCHLzePhOaPxmEAE2s1W8IsAPNgh0DpSyNo-lxTBIXwKbmdsdxVH9t-t0uTsVUVwUK6w=w1186-h889-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since members of the church are encouraged to do missionary work, some of them are assigned to Temple Square to work as tour guides. In the Visitors’ Center, there were many of them from different countries and the tour guides we got happened to be from Canada and USA.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The guides took us to the top of the North Visitors&#8217; Center to show us an 11-foot tall statue of Jesus (picture from Wikipedia). While up there, the guides played a short audio clip about Jesus&#8217;s purpose and told us about their beliefs. Even though I&#8217;m not Christian, it was clear that they were quite devout and dedicated and such qualities are definitely admirable.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cb/SLC_replica_of_the_Christus.jpg" alt=""/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, the guides took us to the Salt Lake Tabernacle to see the pipe organ.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw/photo/AF1QipPBC7QLSxeusxGBGz4_nGvDaPBa3ccGvl_k9-rI?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXTIztSuO48AYfsKXU0dsVSRFiMinPspu-Oly9NVEfDWFnoxEqLZSFcYpohgvfX0R6H5GsOOiXlO6ZKrQr8DRnQgN6lJ6ZeHIOPfq1Ae5Q58fkrrRzJZpNGQbBLd19UFqJkPTLLFRBg7moECVbovg73bg=w1186-h889-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then the guides asked us, &#8220;how many pipes do you think there are?&#8221; Me, not knowing anything about organs, merely counted the ones I saw on the surface and naively said, &#8220;maybe about 30&#8221;. It turns out I was off by several orders of magnitude. The answer: 11,623.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The building was built to house meetings for the church and was used for the LDS General Conference, but the church grew so large, that the occupant capacity of the building was exceeded. After that tour ended, we visited the newer and larger conference center.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw/photo/AF1QipMS3sfrtRawmXsWrS_nBKkp9GR37lhMDLUyvfFM?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUrvRlsn-PozSJwrY1djxu7m6ntkYdo4_mD112pcPiqxvq5ZqI69gl5MvL2p2r1Z06gLJEt4mVtrveAHhJQFHREUz9WGDeM3k_Mjqs2JrUE0vBrfSDRklk-UvyVyXQ4_VwYVUCooAURpgyoOsBQ0l3LmQ=w1186-h889-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We got a tour of the inside and it was massive with 21,000 seats. We were told that to play the church organ, the organist would have to have a PhD in that field.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw/photo/AF1QipMm6ttp0mCjhvQVu2Vpv3CEot2qB9lo2emanFPh?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEU6vhs-AQdS7KLJgPiU_xyXDRHd1mNamQIk5q6_kzLbq16Q3FgYRvE8cGvdsZjWL5MnNOIZKF9Wg1o68rQw5ON6JKGa4LdDaoZVQsFF7s5yjBHzXmdd3PPJnkfLiqtCKpZxVMulqi3rqmf8sbDBQdbogw=w1186-h889-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The roof of the building had a beautiful view of the Temple Square and had a nice garden full of many varieties of plants.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw/photo/AF1QipMepHTMqCN5Vx0z2LLW3GGZrJmFImcn5dy7XrLV?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUez41I9c87xZz2g-zoNnFrHHC4cVrx_ycgY03FyFDuppxwOL0XL7-FsUSIVBbMqly4_LrGV6QtvjBg4jeAvxuAveJhdiJf-WM1P8Hjvxd7h3DDTG8NSuSeoJtJK0eXdxJ7YBaNvtfMMrpg6h-kf4QV5A=w1186-h889-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lastly, there is the temple itself. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public as it is sacred and there are strict <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_recommend#Entrance_requirements">entrance requirements</a>. But at least it looks nice on the outside!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw/photo/AF1QipMeR8ErQrZqox4Uvs3tmnHsOdgpZwbwqJIpDF9v?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUjKj0PKTiLp4PwHZtWXKr8IgZPIKS79UihRaLZiFAwYn-6uYoV22xtuPI9sMPTrkR7hU_NqHF6kzVcxcB3Hwv5EspBe7q71k1_hnQg184VoQghuR4arhkG-_zWvTqUzvm2zlvBTeAn8Fqt9tBWdY5CmQ=w667-h889-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That concluded our tour of the Temple Square in Salt Lake City and then we made our way to the airport and flew back to Vancouver.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM7RKvCEBh1mKEOK6M3qphKe_3tpk_vNVdTirsLc7WCG4Ttq_IxOAFjsenfQXFcEw?key=cFpKVVZhYUdQUlpHU2FZRW5QT0pKZUQ2dm1rWHlR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Link to more photos</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For work, my company sent my coworker and me to a mining tradeshow in Elko, a small town in the northeast corner in the state of Nevada in the United States. This post isn&#8217;t about my experience at the tradeshow, but rather my experience in a small American town.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most interesting thing I experienced here would have to be the ridiculous portions of food that is served &#8211; it really fulfills the American stereotype. For example, this is what we got at the restaurant at the Star Hotel:</p>

<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Elko#6032059004985601490" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SwMQoz95JqQ/U7YttLBc7dI/AAAAAAAAWpQ/dKg73GHC46M/s1280/2014-06-03%252020.26.31.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Elko#6032059116485126802" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Y9kYOYUlIMA/U7YtzqZAqpI/AAAAAAAAWpY/94xMXcIcHV4/s1280/2014-06-03%252020.35.19.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now a standard fork is probably about 7 inches in length, so using the fork as a scale in that picture, the steak is probably about 9 inches long and about 2.5 inches wide. I was expecting a steak of half the size. Not to mention it came with spaghetti, beans, fries, soup, salad, and bread on the side. I ate all of that over two meals.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Naturally, we also explored the town. The road we mostly travelled through was Idaho Street and we really saw how small the town was. When we were there, the temperature was about 30°C and not very humid, making it very unpleasant to walk outside.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/Elko#6032061735474912578" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FmJvy_nEn7c/U7YwMG41XUI/AAAAAAAAWpI/hEAPMb7bmqY/s1280/2014-06-04%252017.01.48.jpg?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Wikipedia, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elko,_Nevada" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Elko</a> had a population of 18,297 people in 2010 &#8211; that&#8217;s pretty small compared to what I&#8217;m used to. The primary industry in Elko is gold mining &#8211; hence the reason to hold a tradeshow. The tradeshow lasted two days and after that we drove to Salt Lake City to catch a plane back to Vancouver.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Six months ago, I had the chance to fly with my friend, Matt, around Vancouver for a little bit. &nbsp;We flew again, but this time, he took us to Powell River, a small city on the Sunshine Coast in BC, which is about 4 hours north west of Vancouver by car. &nbsp;As usual, the flight was very scenic and this time I attempted to take most of the pictures with my friend&#8217;s DSLR (my first time actually taking scenery shots with one). &nbsp;The &#8220;victim&#8221;, as Matt calls it, was the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_DA40" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Diamond DA40</a>, a small four-seater airplane.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we lifted off, I got a good aerial shot of Boundary Bay Airport</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950407273681793394" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-T4Iki0tPCEE/UpQX44i0MXI/AAAAAAAATCA/-aq44gOxLmA/s1280/IMG_9661.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We happened to fly over SFU just because air traffic control instructed Matt to fly this way. Doesn&#8217;t quite look like the prison that everyone seems to think.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950407865881386146" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-aAHTxmmShRo/UpQYbWqM3KI/AAAAAAAATB4/LWZrQLc4zJQ/s1280/IMG_9677.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then we flew over the Burrard Inlet toward North Vancouver.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950407895176648978" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-jHE811sm14o/UpQYdDyvGRI/AAAAAAAATCU/41WuInfIclk/s1280/IMG_9678.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We flew over the water for the next little while and got a view of the Coast Mountains.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950408026297373490" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh5.googleusercontent.com/-aq-N8tyj5io/UpQYksQWkzI/AAAAAAAATCc/HK6RP9NOoWk/s1280/IMG_9686.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it turns out, Powell River is not a large city at all. According to Wikipedia, the city has a population of 13,165 (2011).</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950408256906398370" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-CsOQI7ze-E4/UpQYyHV1CqI/AAAAAAAATCk/CYI5Xy6DKwk/s1280/IMG_9693.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since we arrived there on Sunday, there was almost nobody on the streets and nothing was open. We couldn&#8217;t go to the tourist info center because of it. It made the small town even smaller. I thought cities completely shutting down on Sundays was a European thing, but apparently not.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950408785219704242" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-L3lUDbUbgDM/UpQZQ3diVbI/AAAAAAAASx8/yvbT3n8IrUU/s1152/IMG_9707.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It looked like people were still working at the nearby lumber mill though.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950408618636099138" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P6W5bP3UnO4/UpQZHK46PkI/AAAAAAAASx8/knyxAsXGSxU/s1152/IMG_9703.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We walked around the time randomly for a bit in the freezing cold, and then flew back as the sun set. I managed to capture a picture of rays of light coming through the clouds. If I knew how to work the DSLR better, I might have been able to capture an even better picture.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950409283921748642" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3xopWDjNFFc/UpQZt5RXoqI/AAAAAAAATC0/7DWuYUjF3-c/s1280/IMG_9736.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the coast of Vancouver Island, I managed to snap a picture of some low lying clouds in the distance over some small islands.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950409318005303394" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N8SJ-miyc9Q/UpQZv4PhaGI/AAAAAAAASx8/1BwDGco-xyM/s1152/IMG_9737.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another shot of the sunset on our way back.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/PowellRiver#5950409412783193810" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6BB_7urnDyg/UpQZ1ZUVPtI/AAAAAAAATDE/h6hLvnkOn9g/s1280/IMG_9744.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the way back, Matt even let me take control of the stick for a bit. This time I was a lot more comfortable using the joystick unlike last time. I managed to maintain the desired altitude without the plane screaming at me and I even stayed on the correct heading! This is why Matt&#8217;s the pilot and not me.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More photos <a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPvS0i2pdxQvMw2ZmZlIaQhOjc_qOtGM6iqXFWwM-6hN-IEDnXUXOKVa-g19WiQNw?key=QzJTMDUzVmZwUmR5NUxwZi11T1hRSWRrem9ZaU9B" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the way back to London from Normandy, we stopped by the Canadian Memorial in Vimy Ridge. &nbsp;The Battle of Vimy Ridge occurred in April 1917, and it was a major military success for Canada during the First World War. It was also the first time that the four Canadian divisions in Europe fought together during the war.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the highest point of the ridge stands the memorial. On the base of the memorial, the names of the Canadian soldiers who were missing/presumed dead are inscribed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the strategic purposes of this area (so called Hill 145) was that it served as a vantage point.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/VimyRidge#5897612698085733410" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-isYvdoWKNgI/UdiHgIQ7tCI/AAAAAAAAOiw/0j7EeNJgxHY/s576/IMG_9199.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the strategies during World War I was the use of trenches to defend against enemy attack. Some of the trench networks have been preserved.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tour guide explained that the trench networks are not perfectly straight because if an enemy force were to attack the trench, neither side could have perfect line of sight through the entire trench line. &nbsp;At the same time, the height of the trench in the rear is slightly lower so that artillery shells may glide over, rather than bouncing off the trench wall and landing in the trench.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/VimyRidge#5897612026490484082" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DipBqUBxyoY/UdiG5CYJdXI/AAAAAAAAOhA/AIgLSpQMkDw/s576/IMG_9183.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking out of the trench, one can see the so-called &#8220;<a class="zem_slink" title="No man's land" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_man%27s_land" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia noopener noreferrer">No man&#8217;s land</a>&#8220;. Neither side could freely move here without danger of getting fired upon. This area was once littered with mines, barbed wire, and corpses among other things. Repeated artillery bombardment and mine detonations created large craters in the terrain, which are still visible today. An electric fence still blocks the way into the no man&#8217;s land since there are still live mines here today.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/VimyRidge#5897611404455948898" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZGTefavSb_Y/UdiGU1HjsmI/AAAAAAAAOfY/QFyMEakUZHs/s576/IMG_9170.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Canadian divisions transported personell and supplies through an underground tunnel, which a part of is also preserved. During the war, it was also way darker than shown in the picture and also infested by critters like rats. It was also quite common for some soldiers to sleep here.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/117972094293741244551/VimyRidge#5897611772143837058" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wl7eVSN1zwg/UdiGqO3Ln4I/AAAAAAAAOgQ/0KKRgsXJb9o/s720/IMG_9177.JPG?w=1280&#038;ssl=1" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For reference, this is what the battlefield looked like at the time (courtesy of Wikipedia). &nbsp;It is pretty hard to see the resemblance between the historical pictures and what it looks like today. &nbsp;Part of the reason is also that only a portion of the battlefield was preserved and the rest of it was redeveloped.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Canadian_tank_and_soldiers_Vimy_1917.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Canadian_tank_and_soldiers_Vimy_1917.jpg" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Social Studies class in high school, I had learned about this place and its significance to Canada. I had seen a lot of World War II sites during my time in Europe, but this is one of the few times where I see a site related to World War I.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 161</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After my <a href="https://henrypoon.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/my-horrible-experience-in-brussels/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">unfortunate disaster</a> in Brussels, my friend and I took the first train out of the city.&nbsp; When we arrived in Amsterdam, I immediately felt a huge tourist vibe in the city.&nbsp; Unlike Brussels, the tourist population here was much larger.&nbsp; It also felt safer.&nbsp; By the way this post might have some “mature themes” because of the Red Light District stuff.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Coffee Shops and Other Strange Places</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During our walk to the hostel from the train station, we began see some pretty strange yet touristy places.&nbsp; For example, along the way, there was a Vodka Museum and a Torture Museum (they’d actually present different pre-modern torture devices), and of course a lot of “coffee shops”.&nbsp; For those who don’t know what a coffee shop in Amsterdam is, it is where people go to legally smoke weed.&nbsp; A place for people to drink coffee is simply called a cafe.&nbsp; Many people go to Amsterdam for that reason, but not me though.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipM-J8jOBVZZDobL8jO0r7SkgEv1IvfidBCCCPi5?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEWFfLYn8WXCLXIC9fltM4Kc-jkIP0O0mp3hirtnWCkCSGzYZA-6ZCJHOu0sr-ycILcgumakXhieHcH6lrTaE9uAoQ-e1m7dB_Q7bvh7IDT3mV9UlTBjYlDC06xmGdfI4fUdp7heir3TTjSitTBoyiWm-A=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipMchETHbzMSM4VFjdZF02VbnPJiNWFoLx60cYQO?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXUWkoJy5xyQ4JuXYEI4dLvmJFbPSdNlhzFYTqAPHhHSA7KEq7JJGd51QBSyQzuzA_hJwOJ9dxegAg_SRR342PMFA81aBm6FxqT_Cr5XNMjj3eg2PI9w6hUGxIsFu5ZAif_KfvMRidfxuq8Aq1aZShA7w=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It wasn’t just the Vodka Museum that was weird, they even had stores selling cannabis seeds, which I guess is okay because weed is legal, but coming from a place where it isn’t, it definitely struck me as weird.&nbsp; To take that even further, there is even a Cannabis Museum.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipPPUOVzQKCfUJEgf5SM-bvoYHoTdVwv24R3mSKZ?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXrulLI9ZDzVnVEqwhVT1Suacu_e50fsd7omEWlHA5ONqHJvmBegcpNM_R1UQu9k0bcz4Y2VEStPdeYPx1REaqsqH7M3ScqAtkM3nr-UuGb0RfX6tyJpkkPNU5TfAx9KbzMlsooZrHEeVE13TKt3PJHRw=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After walking through the town square for a little bit, we arrived at Dam Square, the historic center of Amsterdam.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Dam Square</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the historic center, this area has a lot of notable buildings such as the Royal Palace, New Church, National Monument, and Madame Tussaud’s Museum.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> <br> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where I noticed the ridiculous amount of bicycles.&nbsp; In fact, I saw more people riding bicycles than people driving cars.&nbsp; When I crossed the street, I looked for bikers and not drivers.&nbsp; Making our way further into the city, we began to see the large network of canals.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Canals</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another thing that Amsterdam is famous for is its canals.&nbsp; Built in the early 17th century, city planners had the idea of constructing this network for the purposes of defense and water management.&nbsp; Today, people dub it as “The Venice of the North” and it is quite a cultural landmark.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipNPKJNNkji9_XHqytMBH9z89Efc0kX-dOuRbELZ?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUH0gHX03-cLUydNAQcis7xJYoGDlw560VpyCcJsy0Y_M0te0sRi-aZJRzsvih7E3jnNS4-obuEWKNmsCBKs-zR23E4ay5a6t6Q-kg44c1HVpB0EV8ANbN95tI4vvyVnG38njy_fZdXpJVEEPfC9z33HA=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipNAsN-F_JSv9iGAG8G7NU70ANDxtGHSz04hnFZI?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVyXentuJX0HrpxuCp-BtVSpHf-sO-NODRBcqazmqTKaUXHbr1RxAmKgXs23yP2iDGhmLi8B9r2OUFJ4wrbC2FiTaBXFuxDdlJCNeO3tSZuSBHKt7v-0pgvonKyVeVWprqo_WtY5X8kDPZJdhizcwZTbw=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The canal receives its water from the Amstel River (there is a <a href="https://henrypoon.wordpress.com/2011/04/27/the-beer-post/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">beer</a> named after it).&nbsp; According to Wikipedia, because of the canals, there are about 90 islands and 1500 bridges.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Nieuwmarkt</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While walking to the hostel, we reached the New Market, which is another city square.&nbsp; In the center there is a city gate that has been long converted into a cafe/restaurant.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipNnucs5kbKJIXyGnmUidagur9Q6IV6Nv4NyYzpm?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEW3eG3OXJSnjzSF1qTLWXtbG8ozVgxtgpiikFnrJLl8OknhwueKAzIxQf6aurmI9OVAUERekP-PZLYw2uFV2wgwhWhlLqCWCLCS1EaWHdRV8MpVgHXIsj-RLYg_oqPQIzyNguWhbRwzRAIvDBxoWyIcag=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turns out our hostel was less than 100 meters from here.&nbsp; We went there and dropped off our stuff before we continued exploring.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Christian Hostel</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we left, Germany, my friend booked a place for us at this Christian hostel.&nbsp; I’m not even Christian, but that didn’t matter.&nbsp; It had a lot of rules like no smoking, no alcohol, no weed, etc, which was okay.&nbsp; The ironic thing was that when I walked into my room (this was at around 2 PM in the afternoon), I saw a few people passed out on their beds.&nbsp; I thought to myself, “they probably just drank too much beer or smoked too much weed.”&nbsp; The hostel didn’t really care, so long as they didn’t bring that stuff in.&nbsp; They even had a “bible study”.&nbsp; I really wonder who would go to that.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Chinatown</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next to the New Market Square was Amsterdam’s Chinatown.&nbsp; My first impression of this place was that the Chinese stuff here was really traditional unlike the multitude of westernized Chinese food places I always see in Germany (not a big fan of chicken chow mein or kung pao chicken).&nbsp; This place even had a temple with Buddha and various people from Chinese folk religions like Guan Yu.&nbsp; The butcher’s shop even sold entire slabs of an entire pig (like the ones that some Chinese people use for celebrations).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipMxlDlPZG4koqhDzWUpVKsysRHy1KZ5ccb7kbWq?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEU7knDQPYwXZili6bOZvo4q5p3WcEdW4MPvesxVoNPyfWMU7vmX8eNYulOWul09pXXuIUqLLnTRhCF9VwZ60_gQu1UMedejodDhwV398prr6_fpfuGKVewCecUX6hhJ65ogPJRYfwPGW1q1G6F-l8DO-Q=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipMhtlUPIACmG9AxWdmMRlFHwMX22WM0unRNzyEu?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVZ_EbO9tm0a6c_8uZH0oE2djv0z_UnuDU1gthUP77wVTYafciwDF6vrb8zEb1HUMIqYqbZAqYo8PbB7wUK6G0sjK1b9ZFp_i8xvYCZui4XG2L8jE06g8Ci6qyJ0U2UMZeLqQitdxo5s7pMK_OEbmtocA=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After walking through Chinatown, we proceeded to our next destination: the infamous Red Light District.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Red Light District</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before going to Amsterdam, I already knew that the Netherlands legalized weed and prostitution and so I figured that these things would be really prevalent in the city.&nbsp; Indeed they were.&nbsp; Walking down the street, I could smell the odour of weed coming out of every coffee shop.&nbsp; On top of that, if the business I walked by wasn’t a coffee shop, it’d be a sex shop.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipOY5udZiXZPjvyPkkTuZ2Mv1yT2eSpDOa7TC7cT?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUdRraVe6zm4cgSDUNp92ogk9lMH7Q5YjPlM0UTWP3nqLCmyWbL8g0z8tSCjMAnEwDPV_jMQGI5CiLgy69VMWgtoc8iaYkuUzK5vLTlMxXWYh7LkZoEQow3Y3Z2ccXMDDP5kDHF3jBoUNUj3ZFJnInOag=w690-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There even some businesses geared towards gay people.&nbsp; They proudly waved a rainbow flag outside their establishment.&nbsp; The Dutch are clearly really open about these things.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipPAYuy-JfGeFI7ndYS_rGwm6HVeV7L3lSnShDRf?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVAprL3gjuj1ecPmGDNvn5LPe0iCjKBua4RiluV2_2_JA8QnUP06TXjccSS8XQV9iKgYeToxv61MH-0lrG55Gs1IqI-wtGodNQhYB0xDKpKVDu3182AbGKnkon48KXcOy3QWVqKwqyDU4iQ9uG-woqaFg=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At first I walked by a lot of brothels without really knowing that I did (I had no idea what they looked like).&nbsp; It was only when I noticed that some buildings had a row of windows with curtains over them.&nbsp; In one of the windows, a woman wearing lingerie displayed herself for potential customers.&nbsp; I noticed that the building didn’t have a banner or any label.&nbsp; I guess people see that and just know (notice the guy who appears to be in deep contemplation in the picture).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They even had a condom shop that sold condoms with different shapes (they even had a Statue of Liberty condom).</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This city has such a strange blend of an old European vibe mixed with the vices of modern people.&nbsp; It is kind of interesting yet sad to see people indulging in such things.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The XXX Flag</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a lot of places, we kept seeing a flag with a giant “XXX” printed on it and at first, my friend and I thought it just meant what everyone knows it as.&nbsp; Then we started seeing this on the side of old churches and even on police badges.&nbsp; We wondered what its actual meaning was.&nbsp; Apparently, that’s the flag of Amsterdam.&nbsp; What a crazy coincidence.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipOVt3XxoZzn-7J39A4w_EoGuE6nbq-Uu5ZTvnTq?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEV5N6GLDimty7GnYcl9khemZtTX8tCtwm4M6ml0NnbgywbFdqylYRJi7MLMOk2v39US4LIySUiqF627oCM7pOVgno_mQ7mmkzuuOjukvBsg-zuMFiVR-ogprknzh9YhH7NFHM5pMRDtkRox0tp7mloxCw=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another thing really common in the city is the crazy amount of churches.&nbsp; I didn’t really count how many I saw, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw at least five or six of them.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Lots and Lots of Churches</h1>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> <br> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are more, but I didn’t bother posting them.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Anne Frank House</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While randomly walking, we stumbled on the Anne Frank House, the building that her family lived in during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.&nbsp; For those who don’t know who Anne Frank is, she was a victim of The Holocaust who wrote a diary, now published into a booked called “The Diary of a Young Girl”, documenting her life between 1942 and 1944.&nbsp; The building has now since become a museum for people to visit.&nbsp; Inside the museum, people could see the conditions that she lived in and some of her personal paraphernalia.&nbsp; Unfortunately, I couldn’t go in to see the museum for my self since my wallet got stolen (damn bastards!).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipO_cNvbAKR2Z7IWAXUJN68rlpPN06FxNFaEKb_P?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEUjy4h3fGzjkG56-UY6CJDfyE1xpho3S2bmyHwSPe-uDqeo69zcJ4ExaB74eDzz2wzo5MS93Avf2ccUe1g-TlL5EnEUTQRex-soMhuS5mNIOO6ihmn5mFFp-GQ8So_eiMNPBxZ2d4LV-ES7fcJIIO0C5w=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After walking for almost the entire day (I reckon we walked about 30 kilometers that day), we went to go buy food.&nbsp; We would have been hungry a lot earlier if we didn’t stuff our faces at the breakfast buffet at our hotel back in Brussels.&nbsp; Knowing that the Netherlands was famous for its fries, that’s what we got.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Dutch Fries</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most unique thing about their fries is that they do not serve it with ketchup.&nbsp; The main sauce they use is mayonnaise.&nbsp; When I first heard about that, I thought it was the weirdest thing.&nbsp; I had never thought of combining those two things together.&nbsp; After trying it, I can say that I’m never having fries with ketchup ever again.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipMrqjtNlzxfQHCEKyoVCiEv8btHPOD_E-4xorwV?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVqUMgbgt6YOUjfJmRoQ0_ERy9rnuLuTVce0WD9PsouB_nU6h9_jl8IMLNmw9Iyz_TbFwgz--BL_-EA_AmVM-AfuoBtAWnUZEqVQSWqhub_Cpb6iRPokmSvq3hOQmb3SGC3wmmyKYoBhWrnFUFhYd17cw=w690-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another cool thing about their fries is that they serve it in a nice conic container with a wooden fork-like utensil.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Other Dutch Delicacies</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although not as significant of a consumer of cheese as Germany and France, Amsterdam still has shops dedicated completely to cheese.&nbsp; Now I don’t know much about cheese, but the cheese in the store looks so delicious (I like the colour too).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipPuIutIVc5qfKChaIvzUJqQHJQ0gGX3zQWBqgVr?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXA-P4vScyGgep_yN50xJZPcgfbIOefFOmTBqfQvxsbVQXpohzdTFsjDKOs1KjjZsAQtGWoGezDjkrFUT5tnBjUL3siggMBpGvFMnx5fCoxowVaOSgf7BosmkQYJnZFdvHOF5LdaffaAmsQHER7r5bInQ=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another thing that the Dutch are famous for is their beer.&nbsp; Everybody knows Heineken in North America (probably), but it’s really expensive there.&nbsp; Here, it’s like a staple, so I had to try it.&nbsp; We sat at a table overlooking the canals and enjoyed the view while we drank our beer.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipPTiD-t_sLkFREnlQoh8gUFMt0hQrsW2xoDgliA?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEX7KtS6dBeeh7pqnMkN0I5O3g0VPlwtn59htg17UifWIGvXSvLuDjpbxCHJNtG9GjciQZWHYbiwMRBifZacRwUPljo19FIbdkDYKX0yHnhSZb498kCOyVdKGS3uLe1S954qRNrhSU2Fw7svzwcevYIJ2g=w690-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Afterward, we made our way to Museumplein, also known as Museum Square.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Museumplein</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We went here that night and also the next morning.&nbsp; This area houses four museums: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Diamond Museum.&nbsp; In addition, there is also a concert hall and a giant sign for the city.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPa9n2Ej_ck040ZL4pGpyETPDulmSZEps-MBUZNiPw-tI1PviD4kZTPViOw7Zee3w/photo/AF1QipNeqKO50C-iPGyLxy0L-0fHqpgNXRgPpI9z6dtz?key=UkFJR2MwanQ1dTJWYkpTUmNmak5oNmdSWDBIMlNn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVIYdHpjxbIQYv1qesvOjJyAPLlsnHt85c7WaBYt4KF9Pg4Vhkp7cAH8MJknom10VberLvEs1mx3KVCb4AfDL7KGbQzCu7yatLjzyBYhcDoHuSfb3bYkijmurIKeOH1lFHwNvE5-eoLF4N1akD84PJQRQ=w1226-h919-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to going to Museumplein that morning, we went to the flower market first.&nbsp; I was told that the Netherlands were also famous for its tulips.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Flower Market</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I expected, there were indeed many varieties of flowers.&nbsp; They even sold little ceramic “shoes” (basically a shoe shaped container) that people can use to grow their flowers in.&nbsp; I also can’t really say I was surprised when I saw cannabis seeds there too.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After checking out this place, we went to a nearby park called Vondelpark.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After going here, we went to Museumplein to see the place during the day.  After chilling out there for a little bit, we went back to the town center for some food before our train back.  We left in the early afternoon and by the time we went back to Stuttgart, there was time for a beer before going home.  Throughout the whole trip (Brussels and Amsterdam), I only spent around 80 euros with accommodations included, but not train tickets.  I ended up borrowing that money from my friend and we both had just enough.</p>
