Because of my trip to Hong Kong, I took the opportunity to visit Macau (perfect for a day trip). I met up with a friend of mine whom I met while studying at UBC, and she took the time to show me around. Language wasn’t an issue since people in Macau speak Cantonese like in Hong Kong and shops will accept Hong Kong Dollars too!

I had always known that Macau used to be a Portuguese colony, and I was impressed to see how much Portuguese architecture remained, considering that a lot of British architecture in Hong Kong no longer remains.

This is A-Ma Temple (媽閣廟) in Macau. In Cantonese, the pronunciation of the characters “媽閣” sounds like Macau, and it is believed to be the origin of the city’s name. Story goes that after the Portuguese sailors landed near the temple, they asked the natives what the name of the place was, and they were told “媽閣”.

We went to the planetarium show too, and they showed us how various constellations and planets looked in space, but unforunately, all the explanations were in Japanese. Still, it is worth a visit for those who enjoy stargazing.

Another specialty of Nagoya is Hitsumabushi, which is grilled eel on rice. Probably many non-Asians may think that this is weird to eat, but regardless it is very very good, but expensive. According to the local culture, there is a “standard” way to eat this. First is to eat a quarter of it as is. Second, is to add various spices like green onion, and wasabi to it and eat another quarter. Third is to mix it with the given broth and eat another quarter of it. Lastly, it is to eat the last quarter with the favoured method of the three.

Not sure if this is a thing in Nagoya, but someone had the great idea of mixing melon in their spaghetti batter. Step 1: Make spaghetti with melon batter. Step 2: Add whipped cream. Step 3: ???. Step 4: Profit! Apparently, the kiwi one was better, according to a friend.

For a lot of Vancouverites, Seattle is a common travel destination for day-trips or weekend trips. Some friends and I decided to take a trip down to visit another friend of ours for the weekend. After going on this trip, I’ve realized again how much I enjoyed travelling around even if this trip was somewhere close to home. Even though it can get tiring to walk for over 20 kilometers in a day, but it doesn’t matter because there’s so much to see and do. It reminded me of my previous travels and how free I felt while I was travelling.

It was quite quiet in the car on the way there as the two girls in the back slept while the guys in the front didn’t talk much (I was busy finishing up my homework for a course because I forgot to plan my time accordingly). We departed Vancouver at about 8 PM and arrived at my friend’s flat at about 10:30 PM. We spent the rest of the night having some beers and playing Pandemic on its hardest difficulty (it started out pretty mild, but the plague escalated quickly and went out of control).

Space Needle

The Space Needle is probably about the most iconic building in the entire city.

Around the vicinity, there are a lot other tourist attractions such as the Pacific Science Center, the EMP Museum (formerly known as the Science Fiction Museum), and plenty of green space.

We also visited the Amazon campus, which is where our friend was working at. What surprised me is that there wasn’t any huge signage that Amazon was there. The only Amazon sign I could was by staring really hard through the glass into the building lobby.

Just Chilling

We stopped to rest a bit at the lobby of a nearby apartment complex. While we rested, I learned how to play Shuffleboard (albeit badly) and played a game or two.

Seattle Underground

Our next destination was a tour of the underground portions of Seattle. To get to the tour location, we walked through a neighbourhood full of hobos that I would have otherwise avoided at night (it’s relatively mild compared to what East Hastings in Vancouver is like). On one occasion, a hobo asked me if I was ready for the Seahawks game where I promptly replied, “very readys”.

The tour guide told us that where we were in Seattle used to be a lot lower in terms of elevation. After a fire that destroyed the city, the city regraded the land and so all the buildings that used to be above ground were now underground. The tour took us around the underground sections to show the history of the area.

The picture below shows what people use the space for now – storage.

Because of the regrade, sidewalks had to be rebuilt one story higher than before, so city engineers added skylights onto the new sidewalks in order to illuminate the underground areas. On the surface of the sidwalks, one would be able to see the skylights from the other side at ground level.

In the past, the underground area was used for a lot of questionable activities, such as organized crime, speakeasies, prostitution, etc. Because of its history, this area of town is still considered by many locals as the sketchy part of town.

Pike Market

Pike Market feels like the market in Granville Island in Vancouver, but is a lot bigger. I can’t explain it, but for some reason I greatly enjoyed staring at all the seafood.

This restaurant is so popular that when we tried to walk in at 7, to get a spot, the waitress told us to come back at 9. We had heard really good things about this place, so we actually starved ourselves until 9.

My friends encouraged me to try and order in Japanese, so I did. I started by saying to the waitress that I’d try to speak Japanese (私は日本語を話してみます), and then I listed off the food one by one and then success! While it was nothing complicated to do, it was cool doing that anyways.

After lunch, we stayed for a bit longer at our friend’s flat before heading back to Vancouver. Seattle was a much welcome change in scenery and it has further enforced my desire to travel around to different places.

The tour group met up in the morning at Independence Square. We checked in with the tour guide and boarded the tour bus. It probably even be called a tour bus. It was basically a van that could seat around 15 people. It was old and rickety, which was alright I guess. The only problem with it was that it didn’t really have a good suspension nor seatbelts.

Not to mention that the drive to Chernobyl was about two hours on a really bumpy road. On the really bad bumps, my whole body flew up and my head hit the ceiling of the car. I was still recovering from jet lag and I guess I was so tired that I slept anyway, while waking up intermittently when the bumps got too bad. The tour guide played an intro video about Chernobyl on the way there and I slept through that too.

The Abandoned Kindergarten

We toured an abandoned kindergarten. The building was made out of wood and so we were able to go inside and visit it. The tour guide mentioned that people used to be allowed to enter most of the buildings in the area, but lately some of the concrete buildings began to crumble. Because of that, it is no longer allowed for people to enter concrete buildings. The tour guide also said something along the lines of “if you get hit by a falling concrete block in the head, you’ll probably die, but if you get hit by a falling piece of wood, you’ll just get hurt”. By that logic, wooden buildings are still okay!

It makes a lot of sense that there is a lot of random junk lying around since the people did leave in a hurry during the evacuation, but some things didn’t really make sense. Like the doll in the above picture: why is it randomly missing its limbs? There was also a tricycle on the floor with no wheels. Did someone think the wheels were worth something and took only the wheels?

In this area there were also tons of tiny mosquitos and I got stung so many times by these “irradiated” mosquitos. The tour guide said that it’s better when it rains when the mosquitos are even bigger. He said that because they’re big, they’re easier to notice and to get rid of. But if you get stung…the swelling probably isn’t going away for a while.

Reactor Number 4

We went to reaction number 4 next. The disaster began at this very reactor. We were able to get as close as 300 m away from it. Beside it was the new sarcophagus structure that was being built to replace the currently existing leaky one.

I didn’t think we’d be able to get this close to the reactor. At this point the Geiger counter was reading about a few microsieverts per hour, which is over 10 times more than what normally people receive in a given day.

Pripyat

Before Pripyat was evacuated, the city had a population of about 50 000 people and we got to walk around the abandoned city. We were told not to touch anything or sit on any surface for fear of radiation contamination.

After so many years of neglect, trees grew out of control and blocked off entire streets. In some sections of the city, what used to be roads and intersections just became completely blocked by trees. In some of the heavily paved areas, grass and weeds grew through the cracks in the concrete. Bits of concrete were clearly missing from the surface of the buildings too and metal surfaces were all rusted. It’s a shame that we couldn’t go inside the concrete buildings here.

We also went to the amusement park, where the iconic ferris wheel is located.

It was so rusty that I questioned when the spinning part of the ferris wheel would just crumble and fall. Or maybe the seats would be the first to just drop one at a time. Maybe the entire ferris wheel would just fall over on its side. Even in the picture, the ferris wheel looks like its leaning a little bit toward one side.

Beside the ferris wheel were the bumper cars. I found that pretty creepy. I also remember that randomly on the street there was an abandoned bumper car just lying there. That made me wonder how it got there. Did someone think that was worth keeping and drag it there only to abandon it? I wonder what was going through the people’s minds when they were evacuating.

Memorial

Within the Chernobyl area was a memorial for the events that happened and also for the three nuclear events that happened in Japan. In the picture below between the two cranes, there are replicas of nuclear rods.

There was also a path with signs showing names of all the cities and villages that were affected by the nuclear disaster. In such a short time span, so many lives were changed forever.

Back to Kiev

After having a giant lunch at the power plant canteen (no irradiated food I’m pretty sure), we headed back to Kiev. I don’t recall eating dinner that day.

As we passed through the Chernobyl zone checkpoint, everyone had to go through a standard radiation screen. We stood in this machine and the light would turn green to signal that we were okay. I wonder what happens when people fail that.

After passing through the checkpoint, it was another two-hour ride in a van with no suspensions where I fell asleep for pretty much the whole way.
