<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We headed eastward across the Iberian Peninsula toward Gibraltar. The journey took us from the white-sand beaches and kite-surfing spots of southern Spain into a curious pocket of British sovereignty carved into the rocky coastline. What made this crossing particularly memorable was not just the destination, but the peculiar formality of leaving one zone and entering another: the Spanish border officer stamped our passport as we exited the Schengen area &#8211; this time the Schengen stamp had a small car icon in the corner, marking our vehicle&#8217;s departure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc/photos/9da37d54-50fc-4dd1-a242-06c890d8bdf9" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/9da37d54-50fc-4dd1-a242-06c890d8bdf9/thumbnail?key=ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc&amp;size=preview&amp;c=IrcRDIB2eHd%2Fd4eXd4eqYPtLcw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gibraltar itself represents a geographical and political anomaly, a British Overseas Territory situated on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco. As we drove closer, the landscape transformed completely, and soon we could see what defines the entire region: the Rock of Gibraltar towering massively above everything else, its limestone bulk rising over 400 metres above sea level.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="first-glimpse-europa-point-and-the-southern-edge">First Glimpse: Europa Point and the Southern Edge</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our initial stop was Europa Point, the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, a flat, rocky headland that marks the boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The point gets its name from the mythological figure Europa.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc/photos/5028cac9-6fb2-4dfe-b947-5882ba69dd77" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5028cac9-6fb2-4dfe-b947-5882ba69dd77/thumbnail?key=ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc&amp;size=preview&amp;c=o%2BcRJIZ3h3d%2FeIiJh3Z4cIgIhw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Near Europa Point sits Gorham&#8217;s Cave Complex, a cluster of archaeological sites. The complex consists of caves situated at sea level, each containing archaeological and palaeontological deposits spanning over 100,000 years of Neanderthal occupation. In 2016, this site received UNESCO World Heritage status, earning its designation because of the exceptional evidence it holds about how Neanderthals lived. We tried making a spontaneous visit, only to be turned away as the site operates on an extremely restricted access system, with a three-year waiting list to gain entry for serious visitors. The limited access, while unfortunate for us, reflects the delicate nature of these sites, where any uncontrolled traffic would risk disturbing irreplaceable scientific evidence.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-monkeys-on-the-mountain-encounters-with-barbar">The Monkeys on the Mountain: Encounters with Barbary Macaques</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we ventured toward St Michael&#8217;s Cave, ascending the winding paths through the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, we began encountering the Rock&#8217;s most famous residents: the Barbary macaques. They represent Europe&#8217;s only free-living wild monkey population.</p>

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tourists constantly attempted to feed them, despite clear warnings. The animals have learned to exploit this human generosity, demonstrating remarkable problem-solving by unzipping bags and rifling through pockets in search of food.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-cathedral-beneath-the-rock-st-michaels-cave">The Cathedral Beneath the Rock: St Michael&#8217;s Cave</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The path to St Michael&#8217;s Cave climbs steeply on a well-paved road for thirty minutes before reaching the entrance. Several lookout points along the way made the walk up less of a grind.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc/photos/6ad7c8ec-a934-437c-ac2d-468d012a1b26" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6ad7c8ec-a934-437c-ac2d-468d012a1b26/thumbnail?key=ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc&amp;size=preview&amp;c=YucZHIR4h3h%2Fd3d2d4d3cHoGmA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cave system itself is a network of interconnected chambers carved over millions of years by rainwater slowly percolating through limestone. Today, the largest chamber functions as a space for hosted concerts, theatrical productions, and opera performances. The cave derives much of its visual drama from its extensive formations of stalactites and stalagmites &#8211; mineral-rich water dripping from the ceiling deposits layer upon layer of dissolved rock, gradually building downward from the roof while simultaneously building upward from the floor. Some stalactites hang like pale icicles; others have fused with stalagmites rising to meet them, creating continuous columns of mineral deposit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc/photos/6fc3e799-3c6e-486f-ad3f-d4bd7b71b4be" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6fc3e799-3c6e-486f-ad3f-d4bd7b71b4be/thumbnail?key=ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc&amp;size=preview&amp;c=FxgKBIAvcYeLeGdjeIkU%2FjX1eg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The name derives from a similar grotto in Monte Gargano, Italy, where &#8211; according to Catholic tradition &#8211; the Archangel Michael made an appearance. This connection explains why the cave carries religious significance despite being fundamentally a geological formation rather than a sacred site in the traditional sense.</p>

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An installation called &#8220;The Awakening,&#8221; a light and sound show, transformed the cave into an additional cultural experience. Within this light installation appears an ethereal figure &#8211; an angel formed by the projection mapping technology and the natural rock formations.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="moving-on-the-reality-of-a-short-stay">A Short Stay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite the natural and historical richness of what Gibraltar offers, we didn&#8217;t linger longer than a few hours. Tourism in Gibraltar often works this way &#8211; the territory is small, and its main attractions cluster around the Rock. Many visitors arrive on day trips from southern Spain, explore the key sites, and then depart. We were no different. We faced a 4.5-hour drive toward Granada, leaving Gibraltar behind and transitioning into the landscapes of inland Andalusia.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">See more of Gibraltar <a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/ULE-xn-fkvMnfGYGV5eaRJug17bbzzGhMEh1gI6jYLpk4PdbxHG8ADoj4LqrR0zjhvc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We had always been curious about Istanbul’s history, but actually wandering through Sultanahmet put us in the centre of centuries-old architecture. Our self-guided walking tour led us from Byzantine structures to Ottoman buildings, each with its own distinct purpose and character.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/f5cd340e-72da-4157-b453-85bceab3d3e5" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/f5cd340e-72da-4157-b453-85bceab3d3e5/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=4dYNFIJ1h3ePd3d5eHV6gLQIOQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of fitting into simplified geographical labels, there’s a strong sense of being part of a culture formed in the crossroads of Europe and Asia, shaped by both the legacy of the Ottoman Empire and the reforms of the modern Turkish republic. Many people see themselves as belonging to a distinct Turkish identity.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hagia Sophia&#8217;s Thousand-Year Transformation</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our first stop was the magnificent Hagia Sophia, a structure that embodies Istanbul&#8217;s identity more than any other building. Originally constructed by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I between 532 and 537 CE, this architectural marvel has undergone many transformations.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/95c0b7a7-0d12-459c-bfb1-c38233e5ef55" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/95c0b7a7-0d12-459c-bfb1-c38233e5ef55/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=X8YFTIozkYdviWeXqXOJgJcIeA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The building&#8217;s history reads like a political timeline of empires. For nearly a millennium, it served as the principal cathedral of Eastern Christianity until 1453, when Sultan Mehmed II converted it into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. The Ottomans didn&#8217;t destroy the Christian elements but rather incorporated them into their Islamic architecture, adding minarets, a mihrab, and a minbar while preserving many of the original Byzantine mosaics. Even today it remains the centre of politics, having witnessed protesters unfurling a &#8220;Free Palestine&#8221; sign, before quickly removing it, presumably for a social media campaign. Other sensitive topics like the Armenian genocide and the population exchange with Greece reflect ongoing struggles with historical memory and national identity. Our guide tended to avoid these questions, due to their political sensitivity.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/8ad8c4c7-3edb-4531-bae7-be0121e4bdb4" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/8ad8c4c7-3edb-4531-bae7-be0121e4bdb4/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=FQgGDICHdnd%2FeYhyh2lJwNY1CQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The transformation continued into the modern era when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk converted it into a museum in 1934, symbolizing Turkey&#8217;s secular reforms. For 86 years, it existed as a unique blend of Christian and Islamic heritage until July 2020, when it was reconverted to a mosque. This most recent change sparked international debate, but it ensures that this architectural wonder continues to serve as a living, breathing place of worship rather than merely a historical artifact.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/3763dc6a-b95f-4197-b53b-01ab89397186" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/3763dc6a-b95f-4197-b53b-01ab89397186/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=FggGDIDPVVZmeZhhd4sMfm3B%2BA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What captures visitors&#8217; attention immediately are the massive circular calligraphic roundels &#8211; some of the largest in the Islamic world. These wooden panels, inscribed by the Ottoman calligrapher Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi, display the names of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, the first four caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali), and Muhammad&#8217;s grandsons Hassan and Hussein.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Christian mosaics that survive today offer glimpses into Byzantine artistry. During the Ottoman period, many were plastered over but not destroyed, allowing for their later restoration during the museum years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Blue Mosque: Six Minarets and an Architectural Controversy</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Directly across from Hagia Sophia stands the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque, completed in 1616 during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I. The mosque was designed by architect Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa as an imperial show of strength to complement the imposing Hagia Sophia. Its most distinctive feature &#8211; six minarets &#8211; caused considerable controversy when first built, as only the Prophet&#8217;s mosque in Mecca possessed the same number. Unlike Hagia Sophia&#8217;s converted structure, the Blue Mosque was purpose-built as a place of Islamic worship.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/75ea51dd-fa79-45f0-b129-7c68ab98543a" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/75ea51dd-fa79-45f0-b129-7c68ab98543a/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=YKYNRIiMiJZvh4d4d4V2gGgHdw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Minarets serve both functional and symbolic purposes. Their number indicates a mosque&#8217;s importance: most mosques have one minaret, significant mosques have two, and only the most important imperial mosques have four or more. Originally, muezzins climbed these towers five times daily to call the faithful to prayer, with the call projecting in all directions from the circular galleries.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/8c84b4b4-1f4b-428a-a64f-e3e0c937c048" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/8c84b4b4-1f4b-428a-a64f-e3e0c937c048/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=1fcJFIJXeAaFiId1d4eVeG%2Bs9w%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The mosque earned its popular name from the more than 20,000 handmade İznik tiles that adorn its interior. These ceramic masterpieces feature intricate designs of tulips, roses, carnations, and lilies in predominantly blue hues, beautifully illuminated by 260 windows. The craftsmanship represents the pinnacle of Ottoman ceramic art, with each tile contributing to a harmonious whole that creates an almost meditative atmosphere.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/2939d45d-10dd-4f1e-b135-38b18b499ab1" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/2939d45d-10dd-4f1e-b135-38b18b499ab1/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=GQgGBIA5iXh%2FaYiRiHtMbb9E9Q%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During our visit, we observed the quiet distribution of Qurans to interested visitors, reflecting the mosque&#8217;s role as both a place of worship and cultural exchange.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Basilica Cistern&#8217;s Mysterious Depths</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Built in the 6th century during Emperor Justinian I&#8217;s reign, this underground marvel was designed to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople and Hagia Sophia. The engineering achievement is staggering: 336 marble columns, each approximately 9 meters tall, arranged in 12 rows of 28 columns, supporting the weight of the vaulted ceiling above.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/3dc922da-abfb-4d72-8b7a-0bbee627270b" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/3dc922da-abfb-4d72-8b7a-0bbee627270b/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=VhgKBIIneYiPdmhkiHk5v4r0ug%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cistern&#8217;s most intriguing features are the Medusa heads serving as column bases. These carved blocks were discovered during restoration work between 1985 and 1987, having remained hidden for centuries.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/3542179f-fee3-4883-9431-10c3397000b3" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/3542179f-fee3-4883-9431-10c3397000b3/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=UxgKDIAEp2iGeIqGmYgJgLsB6g%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Several explanations exist for these mysterious sculptures. Some historians believe the heads were intentionally placed upside down to neutralize Medusa&#8217;s legendary power to turn viewers to stone. Others suggest they were simply repurposed architectural elements from earlier Roman buildings, positioned for purely structural reasons. A third theory proposes they were placed as protective talismans against evil spirits.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/7c2b5882-0b1e-405f-90fa-0a5bf7bb0d57" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/7c2b5882-0b1e-405f-90fa-0a5bf7bb0d57/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=TwgKDILvu2poh4aHeHf1ZgWMZw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cistern&#8217;s Islamic history reveals an interesting cultural perspective on flowing versus still water. When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, they largely abandoned the cistern because Islamic tradition considers moving water more spiritually pure than stored water. This cultural preference led to the cistern&#8217;s gradual neglect until its rediscovery and restoration in the modern era.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/13a7549b-269b-4ca4-a62c-98792e1eeeca" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/13a7549b-269b-4ca4-a62c-98792e1eeeca/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=0rcJFIb2plpElnZ1ZYZgqkr4Wg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The atmospheric lighting and the sound of water dropping from the ceiling create an almost mystical environment that makes visitors feel like they&#8217;re exploring an underground cathedral. The wooden walkways allow close examination of the varied column capitals, some Corinthian, others Ionic or Doric, evidence that the builders sourced materials from diverse ancient structures throughout the empire.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Imperial Opulence: Inside Topkapi Palace</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Topkapi Palace served as the primary residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years, and walking through its courtyards and chambers offers an intimate glimpse into imperial life. The palace complex is vast, containing multiple courtyards, residential quarters, administrative buildings, and the famous Harem, where the sultan&#8217;s family and concubines lived in seclusion.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The palace&#8217;s Sacred Relics chamber houses one of the world&#8217;s most significant collections of Islamic artifacts. These relics were brought to Istanbul in 1517 when Sultan Selim I conquered the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, establishing himself as Caliph. The collection includes items purportedly belonging to Prophet Muhammad himself: strands of hair from his beard, a tooth, his footprint, several swords, and most significantly, the Blessed Mantle (Hırka-i Saadet).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether one believes in the authenticity of these artifacts or not, their historical significance as symbols of Islamic leadership and spiritual authority is undeniable. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The palace also contains remarkable examples of Ottoman craftsmanship and design. The tile work throughout the complex rivals that of Portugal&#8217;s Sintra Palace but with distinctly Turkish colour palettes and motifs[highlighted in visitor notes]. The various reception halls, and the sultan&#8217;s private chambers each tell stories of ceremony, diplomacy, and daily life in the Ottoman court.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I checked in together with one of our tour group members who happen to have the same flight connection as me, but in the process, the attendant mistakenly checked one of her suitcases under my itinerary, and I noticed it too late, causing us to spend time to work with the airline to return her luggage, a process that, thankfully, worked out a day later. I also met an Indian passenger on her first flight ever &#8211; traveling from India to Turkey to Frankfurt to Canada.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These moments reminded us that while Istanbul&#8217;s historic sites provide the framework for exploration, the people we meet, fellow travelers, guides, and locals enriches sightseeing into genuine cultural exchange. The laughter, shared observations, and collective wonder at ancient achievements created memories that we will carry with us.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Practical Observations: Modern Istanbul&#8217;s Challenges</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The economic challenges facing Turkey were evident in pricing that approaches American levels despite significantly lower local wages. Inflation rates exceeding 47% in late 2024 have created substantial pressure on both residents and visitors. Unlike some nations, Turkey didn’t engage in excessive pandemic spending; however, several distinct factors have fueled inflation, such as persistent currency devaluation, lowering interest rates in the face of rising prices, and heavy reliance on imported goods (some even highly taxed). The political situation continues to generate debate, with critics arguing that democratic institutions have been weakened while supporters maintain that stability has been preserved.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The taxi situation in Istanbul remains problematic for tourists, with widespread reports of scams including overcharging, longer routes, and &#8220;broken&#8221; meters. The prevalence of these issues suggests systemic problems that detract from the city&#8217;s tourism appeal. Using public transportation or pre-arranged transfers appears advisable for visitors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Istanbul’s airport stands out for its striking design and enormous scale (albeit with less than sufficient air conditioning), and amenities like business lounges with a mini golf course and a pool table give arriving travellers a strong first impression. However, this impressive gateway doesn’t fully hide the economic and social challenges that many people in Turkey face beyond its sleek halls.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We started our visit in Selçuk, small town in İzmir Province sits at the heart of one of Turkey&#8217;s most significant archaeological regions, where layers of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Roman history create a compelling narrative of civilizational change.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-stork-highway-of-ancient-rome">The Stork Highway of Ancient Rome</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Walking through Selçuk&#8217;s streets during the ongoing heat wave, we couldn&#8217;t help but notice the most unusual sight: massive white storks perched confidently atop Roman aqueduct ruins and modern utility poles alike. These aren&#8217;t just random visitors – they&#8217;re part of an annual migration pattern that has turned this historic town into Turkey&#8217;s unofficial stork capital.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/0862caf7-2f9b-4c41-9b42-b6eb20a7ce6b" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/0862caf7-2f9b-4c41-9b42-b6eb20a7ce6b/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=ZLYFLIZ4aJd%2BeHhwdnqJgJwHuA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every March, storks return to Selçuk from their winter homes in sub-Saharan Africa. The storks choose the highest points available for their nests, including the remnants of Byzantine aqueducts that once supplied water to ancient Ephesus. Local authorities have even installed special platforms on utility poles to prevent the birds from electrocution while preserving their traditional nesting sites.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="mysteries-of-the-multi-breasted-goddess">Mysteries of the Multi-Breasted Goddess</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our visit to the Ephesus Museum revealed one of archaeology&#8217;s most debated artifacts: a towering statue covered in what appears to be dozens of breasts. This is the famous Artemis of Ephesus, but those protuberances might not be what they seem.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/3573fc06-e6e3-4acf-a596-b9cb991d15fe" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/3573fc06-e6e3-4acf-a596-b9cb991d15fe/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=x%2FcJBIAIp2hziniIeHYJh0PwSA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 292-centimetre-tall statue actually represents a fascinating scholarly controversy. While traditionally interpreted as multiple breasts symbolizing fertility, many experts now believe these oval objects are bull testicles, hung as offerings during sacrificial ceremonies. Some scholars even suggest they could be bee larvae, as bees were sacred to Artemis. What makes this debate particularly intriguing is that none of the &#8220;breasts&#8221; have nipples – a detail that ancient sculptors, masters of human anatomy, would hardly have overlooked.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/7701496f-925f-4322-8dfb-52c9ae8a5145" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/7701496f-925f-4322-8dfb-52c9ae8a5145/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=kxgKHIIJnIhxiIaGe3cHdHQwFw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This statue likely stood in the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, making it a tangible connection to one of antiquity&#8217;s most celebrated structures. The temple&#8217;s destruction by 401 CE means this museum piece represents our closest link to understanding how the ancient world venerated this powerful goddess.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="where-emperors-built-upon-apostles">Where Emperors Built Upon Apostles</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ruins of the Basilica of Saint John dominate Ayasoluk Hill, their weathered stones telling a story of imperial ambition, religious devotion, and inevitable decay. Emperor Justinian I commissioned this massive structure between 548 and 565 CE, designing it as both a pilgrimage destination and a worthy monument to house the tomb of John the Apostle.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/e0f23b26-0644-40b5-b4fd-0864bfe60f31" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/e0f23b26-0644-40b5-b4fd-0864bfe60f31/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=ZBgGDIIUZmZwiYeEZ3Vnj2T2aA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The basilica measured 428 by 213 feet, making it potentially the seventh-largest church in the world if reconstructed today. Justinian modeled it after the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, creating a cruciform structure crowned with six domes. The builders incorporated materials from the nearby Temple of Artemis and other Ephesian ruins, recycling ancient marble and stones into Christian architecture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/539c0661-5eda-451d-8dee-4f145e6e3bd6" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/539c0661-5eda-451d-8dee-4f145e6e3bd6/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=4NYRNIiIeIh%2Fd3d2iHaXgIQISA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The basilica&#8217;s decline began with Arab raids in the 7th and 8th centuries, which forced the construction of defensive walls around the structure. By 1304, invading Seljuk Turks converted part of the building into a mosque, and in 1402, Tamerlane&#8217;s Mongol army destroyed it during their invasion. Earthquakes in the 1360s completed the devastation, leaving the impressive ruins we see today.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="a-castle-built-on-sacred-ground">A Castle Built on Sacred Ground</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Crowning Ayasoluk Hill above the basilica ruins stands a fortress that represents the practical realities of medieval defense. The Ayasoluk Castle, built during the Byzantine era around the 6th century CE, incorporates stones from dismantled Roman buildings, including materials from Ephesian structures.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/52dcda4c-5827-4c9f-a7bc-abab37862353" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/52dcda4c-5827-4c9f-a7bc-abab37862353/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=YsYJTIqneGeJd4eLhoB4cIcGdw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The castle&#8217;s strategic position made it valuable to successive rulers. Seljuk Turks expanded it after conquering the area in 1090, and Ottoman forces later added their own modifications. The fortress enclosed fifteen towers connected by 1.5 kilometres of walls, protecting a small community that included a mosque, cisterns, baths, and residential quarters.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/2860116b-9f49-4a25-9ced-8af428006998" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/2860116b-9f49-4a25-9ced-8af428006998/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=4cYFRIqAmIbJeJaoeWOIgIYIeA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What makes this castle particularly fascinating is its relationship with the basilica below. Rather than destroying the Christian site, medieval builders incorporated it into their defensive strategy, using the basilica&#8217;s walls as part of the lower fortress complex. This created unique architecture where Islamic military architecture literally rests upon Christian sacred space.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="divine-intervention-at-the-neighbourhood-mosque">Divine Intervention at the Neighbourhood Mosque</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our exploration of Selçuk&#8217;s religious landscape led us to the İsa Bey Mosque, a remarkable example of 14th-century Anatolian architecture. Built between 1374-75 by Syrian architect Ali ibn el-Dimişki, this mosque demonstrates the transitional period between Seljuk and Ottoman architectural styles.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/86f5b9a0-4800-479b-93c2-d43c538fc4d7" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/86f5b9a0-4800-479b-93c2-d43c538fc4d7/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=IBgKDISXh3h%2FiIdxhnd5cHwItw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The mosque&#8217;s segregated prayer areas for women represent traditional Islamic practice, though such arrangements can appear restrictive to visitors from different cultural backgrounds. These architectural divisions reflect religious interpretations that prioritize modesty and separate worship spaces, practices that have shaped Islamic religious architecture for centuries.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/e355f9a5-dd16-49ea-aacd-18ff4e222d71" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/e355f9a5-dd16-49ea-aacd-18ff4e222d71/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=WigGDISMomVPeIlxmIUSsJcGuA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During our visit, we discovered that the mosque offers free Quran copies to interested visitors – a practice that connects contemporary Islamic outreach with the site’s long history as a religious centre. While there, we met a local man who was especially eager to talk to us about Islam. He explained that he hadn&#8217;t actually planned to visit the mosque at that time; he was on his way to complete some errands, but on a whim decided to stop by and pick up a Quran for a friend. Instead, he ran into us and was convinced that our meeting was no coincidence, telling us he believed it was divine intervention.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our conversation quickly turned philosophical. He earnestly shared his belief that the Quran contains the answers to every question in life, presenting it as the ultimate guide to truth. At one point, he shared a rather striking perspective: he said that people who believe in God are the highest tier of lifeforms, followed by animals, with people who don&#8217;t believe, especially those who &#8220;act like they are their own god&#8221;, ranking below animals. I couldn&#8217;t help but laugh internally, realizing that by his definition I must be beneath the neighborhood cats lounging in the sun! He meant no offense, his words were offered with sincerity and a desire to share his worldview. Still, I got the impression he didn&#8217;t realize we weren&#8217;t religious ourselves, or how his ranking might sound to an outsider.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="echoes-of-the-population-exchange">Echoes of the Population Exchange</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our journey to Şirince village, perched on a hillside 8 kilometres from Selçuk, revealed one of Turkey&#8217;s most poignant historical legacies. This mountaintop settlement, originally called Çirkince (meaning &#8220;ugly&#8221; in Turkish), was supposedly named by its Greek founders to deter other settlers from discovering their mountain paradise.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/130b5669-d189-4144-bf0e-4ae84262eab5" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/130b5669-d189-4144-bf0e-4ae84262eab5/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=2sYNJIRtl3ifh3dqh4eKYsAIFA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The village prospered under its Greek Orthodox Christian population, who spoke primarily Turkish despite their religious identity. By 1908-09, over 1,000 houses sheltered Greek families who cultivated vines, tobacco, figs, and olives while maintaining their distinct cultural traditions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs/photos/1046861d-7202-4166-8dd1-8deea38bf4cb" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/1046861d-7202-4166-8dd1-8deea38bf4cb/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=0Tv7sW6MSRXsWQSo_SN0c9IVKLy2CMLz7HFh5xPLMeZ3aaPVlfjPJhkTCFMFCtBeWEs&amp;c=mOcJFIIjhJfPhFiPlpqlQYALNw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> The 1923 Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey devastated Şirince&#8217;s established community. This compulsory transfer, formalized in the Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations, displaced approximately 1.6 million people based solely on religious affiliation. Greek Orthodox Christians from Turkish territories moved to Greece, while Muslims from Greece relocated to Turkey. The abandoned houses we encountered represent this traumatic displacement.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-grandeur-of-ancient-ephesus">The Grandeur and Complexity of Ancient Ephesus</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The archaeological site of Ephesus, directly connected to modern Selçuk, represents one of the Mediterranean&#8217;s most significant Roman cities. As we walked among its ruins during the intensifying heat wave, the scale and sophistication of this ancient metropolis became immediately apparent. A local restaurant owner&#8217;s joke about Efes beer – suggesting we walk a few kilometres toward ancient Ephesus since &#8220;Efes&#8221; is simply the Turkish name for the ancient city – highlighted how thoroughly this archaeological site integrates with the culture. The beer&#8217;s naming represents a modern commercial connection to ancient prestige.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/93b059d7-64fb-4461-b457-a4774373bd3c" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/93b059d7-64fb-4461-b457-a4774373bd3c/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=YNcNRIh5eIdvh3h8eHWXgIYJaA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Temple of Artemis ruins, reduced now to a single reconstructed column, still commanded respect as the remains of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Though little survives of this massive structure, which once measured 137 metres long and featured 127 columns each standing 18 metres high, the site&#8217;s significance resonates across millennia.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/6ac16b21-0d0b-4d02-bcd7-d884b80cdc67" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6ac16b21-0d0b-4d02-bcd7-d884b80cdc67/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=WxgKDIJ4h4iMd3d%2Fdo32kmENBw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ephesus declined through a combination of geographical and political factors. The Küçük Menderes River gradually silted up the harbour, cutting the city&#8217;s vital connection to maritime trade routes. Natural disasters, including a devastating earthquake in 614 CE, damaged infrastructure repeatedly. The rise of Christianity displaced traditional pagan worship, while Gothic invasions in 262 CE destroyed much of the city, including the Temple of Artemis.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was captivated by how Ephesus’s grandeur was engineered. The ancients combined brute force and technical innovation. Iron pins and lead clamps held massive marble slabs together, damping seismic shocks and locking the city’s great structures in place (though unlikely they knew how well that method would stand up to an actual earthquake).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We realized that knowing Latin wouldn’t have helped us decipher most Ephesian inscriptions. The city’s later inscriptions switched entirely to Greek, the region’s lingua franca after Alexander the Great’s conquest. An odd feeling &#8211; usually we lament not knowing Latin, but this time, it wouldn’t have helped at all. Amid these weighty ruins, we saw samples of the ichthys fish symbol (colloquially known as the Jesus fish symbol), scratched into ancient stones, symbolizing early Christianity. In Greek, it&#8217;s written as ΙΧΘΥΣ, and is sometimes seen abbreviated using a symbol resembling a pizza cut into eight slices.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Temple That Bridged Empires</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among Ephesus&#8217;s countless architectural treasures, the Temple of Hadrian stands as a masterpiece of cultural synthesis. This elegantly proportioned structure, built around 117 CE, demonstrates how Roman architects embraced and transformed Eastern design traditions through its distinctive Syrian arch.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/d9549aba-361a-4e02-871c-3de6f8a97825" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/d9549aba-361a-4e02-871c-3de6f8a97825/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=HAgKJIafaoaviYhnZ2ZmcFAFFg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The temple&#8217;s facade tells multiple stories through stone. Tyche, goddess of city fortune, crowns the keystone wearing walls as her crown, symbolizing her protection over Ephesian prosperity. Above the inner doorway, a relief of Medusa emerges from acanthus leaves, not the terrifying monster of myth, but a protective figure surrounded by the Mediterranean vegetation that inspired Corinthian column designs.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="roman-domestic-life-preserved-in-paint">Roman Domestic Life Preserved in Paint</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Terrace Houses of Ephesus shattered our expectations of ancient Roman domestic architecture. These luxury residences, inhabited by wealthy families from the 1st to 7th centuries CE, revealed that Roman homes were far more colourful and sophisticated than typical stone ruins suggest.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/08f7f2d7-cb1a-47e8-a4cd-c1486aab8bfb" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/08f7f2d7-cb1a-47e8-a4cd-c1486aab8bfb/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=ZBgGDIAFYlsEt5aqZXh%2Fp%2FrlnQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The houses featured extensive frescoed walls with floral motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative scenes painted directly onto plaster surfaces. Archaeologists have carefully restored many of these paintings, revealing the artistic sophistication of domestic Roman decoration. The mosaic floors display intricate geometric and figural designs, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship available to Ephesian elite. These restorations represent authentic ancient artwork, not modern interpretations.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/88ed4654-7c12-422c-9c88-e2db6eecc1eb" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/88ed4654-7c12-422c-9c88-e2db6eecc1eb/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=WggGBIASWFeNaaddan%2B%2FmPTdSA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The houses incorporated sophisticated engineering, including hypocaust heating systems that circulated warm air beneath floors and within walls, and plumbing that provided both hot and cold running water. These amenities matched those available in Roman public baths, demonstrating the luxury standards of Ephesian wealthy families.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-library-that-conquered-death">The Library That Conquered Death</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Library of Celsus stands as Ephesus&#8217;s most iconic structure, and deservedly so. This magnificent building, constructed between 110-135 CE, served the dual purpose of housing scrolls and honouring the dead. Tiberius Julius Aquila commissioned the library as a memorial to his father, Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, who had served as Roman consul and proconsul of Asia. The building functioned as both a repository of knowledge, holding approximately 12,000 scrolls, and as Celsus&#8217;s mausoleum – his marble sarcophagus rests in a crypt beneath the building.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/a9c69543-8584-49df-b9eb-8b97a9717213" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/a9c69543-8584-49df-b9eb-8b97a9717213/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=nBgODIJ2Z3dvd3aNd5ijTwfJMw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fire destroyed the library&#8217;s interior around 262 CE, though the façade survived until earthquakes brought it down in the 10th or 11th century. Austrian archaeologists reconstructed the façade between 1970 and 1978, creating the impressive sight that draws crowds today for both daytime visits and evening light shows.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg/photos/21152431-e6b6-47ee-941d-1fabd1b8ae54" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/21152431-e6b6-47ee-941d-1fabd1b8ae54/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=EmD27SanuDrHq7Rxx1ppjC9pcuChE58BDUwR4lAX1hiK6b4mZ-ih7oxyT73Nl4R1FDg&amp;c=XwgODIJDeHh%2Fd3ePeJm1Tzf7NA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we left, we saw people lined up for hundreds of meters lining up to see the evening light show &#8211; many of them coming in from cruise ships. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standing on the windswept cliffs of the Gallipoli Peninsula, we found ourselves at the crossroads of continents and centuries. This narrow strip of land in northwestern Turkey, where the Aegean Sea meets the Dardanelles Strait, witnessed one of the most significant military campaigns of World War I. The Gallipoli Campaign of 1915-1916 transformed this strategic peninsula into a defining moment for multiple nations, creating legacies that continue to resonate over a century later.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-campaign-that-changed-nations">The Campaign That Changed Nations</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Gallipoli Campaign, known to Turks as the Battle of Çanakkale, began on April 25, 1915, when Allied forces attempted to force passage through the Dardanelles Strait. The strategic objective was ambitious: capture Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war, and establish a supply route to Russia through the Black Sea. What planners expected to be a swift operation instead became an eight-month ordeal that would define the national consciousness of Turkey, Australia, and New Zealand.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw/photos/9be83243-f832-4231-b5f7-46e686f04b95" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/9be83243-f832-4231-b5f7-46e686f04b95/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw&amp;c=pMYJNIichWhfl3aKeHWHcHkIpw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The peninsula, stretching approximately 60 kilometres into the Aegean Sea, became the stage for one of history&#8217;s most brutal campaigns. The terrain itself posed enormous challenges &#8211; rugged cliffs, steep ravines, and scrubland that offered little cover but countless hiding places for defenders. The geography that made Gallipoli strategically valuable also made it nearly impossible to conquer.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-making-of-atatrk">The Making of Atatürk</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among the Ottoman commanders defending Gallipoli was a 34-year-old lieutenant colonel named Mustafa Kemal, who would later become known as Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. His actions at Gallipoli, particularly his defense of Chunuk Bair, established him as the &#8220;Rock of Gallipoli&#8221; and catapulted him into national prominence.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw/photos/38ffe2c9-a6c6-4489-a9fe-f420049f5d33" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/38ffe2c9-a6c6-4489-a9fe-f420049f5d33/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw&amp;c=IQgKNIaPe4enloh%2BiGd1YFUGVg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kemal&#8217;s tactical brilliance and inspirational leadership during the campaign became legendary. When he famously told his troops, &#8220;I am not ordering you to attack, I am ordering you to die,&#8221; he embodied the desperate determination that would ultimately repel the Allied invasion.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw/photos/37aa2b8f-a9d0-4998-9fd0-c362cf398f65" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/37aa2b8f-a9d0-4998-9fd0-c362cf398f65/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw&amp;c=YbYJPIh%2Fl3h0eodoh6RmgGoFqA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kemal&#8217;s success at Gallipoli wasn&#8217;t just tactical; it was transformational. His ability to coordinate defenses, inspire troops, and maintain morale under impossible circumstances demonstrated the leadership qualities that would later make him the founding father of the Turkish Republic. The victory at Gallipoli became a cornerstone of Turkish national identity and pride, representing the last great stand of the Ottoman Empire and the birth of modern Turkey.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-staggering-scale-of-loss">The Staggering Scale of Loss and a Personal Connection to History</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The numbers behind the Gallipoli Campaign reveal its devastating human cost. Over 559,000 Allied personnel participated in the campaign, facing more than 300,000 Ottoman defenders. The casualty figures paint a sobering picture of the campaign&#8217;s brutality. The Ottoman Empire paid the highest price, with over 87,000 deaths and 300,000 total casualties. Among the Allied forces, Britain and Ireland lost 29,500 lives, Australia 8,709, New Zealand 2,779, and France 12,000. These numbers represent not just military statistics but entire generations of young men who never returned home.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw/photos/424e09b3-5feb-4457-9f17-700ad22e304f" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/424e09b3-5feb-4457-9f17-700ad22e304f/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=dYJ5dbQWHRcxO4qqFWTFFifgGbIUGIbtjpTZqAO0CkQB-IQwRZc-A3WBTkZd3CjYtIw&amp;c=H%2BcRLIZ4eHd%2Fd3d1eIeIgIEIGA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In our tour group, there was a woman from New Zealand whose family story brought the campaign&#8217;s human cost into sharp focus. She found the grave of her grandfather&#8217;s cousin, who had died during the campaign. Through the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, she located his final resting place among the rows of white headstones that now mark the peninsula&#8217;s cemeteries. She later shared that other family members had survived Gallipoli only to die later at the Battle of the Somme, where over 57,000 British casualties occurred on a single day.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="a-source-of-national-pride">A Source of National Pride</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Turkey, Gallipoli represents far more than a military victory – it embodies the spirit of national resistance and the birth of modern Turkish identity. The campaign is celebrated as a defining moment when Ottoman forces, under Kemal&#8217;s leadership, successfully repelled a major Allied invasion. This victory became a rallying point for Turkish nationalism and continues to be commemorated as a source of immense national pride.</p>

The park serves both as a historical preserve and a place of pilgrimage for Turks, who visit in large numbers to pay their respects to the &#8220;Martyrs of Çanakkale&#8221;.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Istanbul commands the narrow waterway between Europe and Asia, a city where three empires have left their architectural signatures across 2,000 years of continuous history. The Historic Areas of Istanbul, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, encompass some of humanity&#8217;s most significant achievements in urban planning and monumental architecture. This is a destination where Roman foundations support Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques crown hilltops, and modern life flows through ancient streets that have witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. Our week-long exploration of Turkey began and ended in this continental crossroads, where the Bosphorus strait connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and divides not just continents but epochs of human achievement.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="first-impressions-of-a-continental-bridge">First Impressions of a Continental Bridge</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The journey to Istanbul had begun with a business class flight, featuring a surprisingly excellent grilled duck leg &#8211; tender, juicy, and far exceeding expectations for airline cuisine. The connection through Madrid provided time to relax in the lounge before boarding Turkish Airlines for the final leg.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turkish Airlines, the country&#8217;s flag carrier, serves traditional Turkish mezze platters on international flights, featuring selections like ezme (spicy tomato paste), muhammara (red pepper and walnut dip), and various cheese preparations. The cold appetizer service, while authentically Turkish, presents flavours that challenged my unaccustomed palates with their intensity and unique spice combinations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our first night&#8217;s accommodation was a newly constructed hotel that showcased both the promise and pitfalls of Istanbul&#8217;s rapidly expanding tourism infrastructure. While the breakfast buffet displayed beautiful presentation, the protein selection was limited. One memorable detail was the availability of purple olives, which are actually black olives that have been treated with a natural fermentation process, giving them their distinctive colour and slightly different flavour profile. The newly opened hotel gleamed with modern finishes, yet a closer look revealed shortcuts beneath the polish: water from the sink’s U-trap had a slow drip, hinting at rushed plumbing work.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="walking-through-conquest-and-faith">Walking Through Conquest</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the morning, we met a subset of our group tour that also signed up for this optional walking tour. It began at the Gate of Charisius of the Theodosian Walls, the massive fortification system that protected Constantinople for over 1,000 years until Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II finally breached them in 1453. These walls, built in the 5th century, stretched for 12 miles and featured double lines of defence with towers and gates. The conquest of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire and the beginning of Ottoman rule over this strategic city.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/eb6fc60f-27cf-4efc-ad15-52ff5416dc72" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/eb6fc60f-27cf-4efc-ad15-52ff5416dc72/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=2%2FcNDIJZd4efeHd6d3qmcHMLCA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our guide also shared a local idiom about fig trees, explaining that calling a &#8220;fig tree&#8221; appears complimentary but actually suggests they ruin everything around them &#8211; much like how fig trees&#8217; aggressive root systems can damage foundations and infrastructure.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mihrimah Sultan Mosque</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We visited the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, designed by the master architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This mosque, one of two built for Sultan Süleyman&#8217;s daughter, demonstrates the sophisticated engineering and spiritual symbolism of Ottoman architecture. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mosque architecture reflects Islamic principles and practical needs. The mihrab (prayer niche) always faces Mecca, orienting worshippers toward the holy city. The minbar (pulpit) stands to the right of the mihrab, while the main prayer hall remains free of furniture to accommodate prostration. The qibla wall (facing Mecca) receives the most decorative attention, often featuring intricate calligraphy and geometric patterns.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The building process showcased the ritual of wudu (ablution), which Muslims perform before prayer. The wudu process follows specific steps: first, practitioners state their intention and say &#8220;Bismillah&#8221; (in the name of Allah). They then wash their hands three times, rinse their mouth three times, cleanse their nostrils three times, wash their face three times, wash their arms up to the elbows three times, wipe their head once, clean their ears, and finally wash their feet up to the ankles three times. This purification ritual prepares both body and mind for prayer.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Church of St. Mary of the Spring</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Church of St. Mary of the Spring, known as Zoödochos Pege, represents a significant Orthodox Christian site. Emperor Justinian I built the original church here in the 6th century. The current structure dates to 1835, rebuilt after Ottoman forces destroyed the Byzantine-era building.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The church&#8217;s Byzantine art reflects the Eastern Orthodox tradition that survived the Iconoclastic periods of the 8th and 9th centuries. These paintings, featuring saints and angels with golden halos, represent the triumph of iconophiles (image-lovers) over iconoclasts (image-breakers). The artwork employs traditional Byzantine techniques, using gold leaf backgrounds to suggest divine light and eternal glory.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The holy spring beneath the church has attracted pilgrims for 1,500 years. Orthodox Christians believe the water possesses healing properties, and the site remains active for religious ceremonies.</p>

Traditional pide dough contains flour, yeast, water, salt, and sometimes yogurt or olive oil. The boat shape is formed by folding the edges, creating a rim that holds ingredients like minced meat, cheese, or vegetables seasoned with Turkish spices such as cumin, paprika, and parsley.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Art of Turkish Coffee</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turkish coffee preparation represents a centuries-old tradition that UNESCO recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The process begins with finely ground coffee beans, ground to a powder-like consistency much finer than regular coffee. The coffee is brewed in a cezve (a small, long-handled pot traditionally made of copper) with cold water and sugar if desired.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The brewing process requires patience and attention. The cezve is heated slowly over medium heat, allowing the coffee to warm gradually. As it heats, dark foam begins to form. The key moment arrives when the coffee approaches a boil &#8211; the foam is carefully distributed among the cups before the coffee itself is poured. This foam is considered essential to proper Turkish coffee service.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/bbb047a0-271e-4aaa-b8f8-e916302bf92f" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/bbb047a0-271e-4aaa-b8f8-e916302bf92f/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=mVgKFIhfNWdmh5hiuZjEj2r8uQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The resulting coffee has an earthy, intense flavour that can surprise newcomers. The grounds settle at the bottom of the cup, and the coffee is never stirred once served. The texture is notably different from filtered coffee, with a slightly grainy consistency that reflects the traditional preparation method. This coffee culture extends beyond mere consumption &#8211; it plays a role in social rituals, including traditional marriage customs where the bride-to-be serves coffee to the groom&#8217;s family.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="living-history-in-modern-times">Living History in Modern Times</h2>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cruising-the-continental-divide">Cruising the Continental Divide</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Bosphorus cruise provided perspectives on Istanbul&#8217;s architectural evolution across different periods and empires. This narrow strait, connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, serves as the boundary between Europe and Asia, making Istanbul the only city spanning two continents. </p>

These wooden structures, many dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. People still live in these houses today, and for a time, they could lounge on their patio overlooking the river, but not many more due to the tourist traffic.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cruise also revealed the Rumeli Fortress, constructed in just four months in 1452 by Sultan Mehmed II as part of his conquest preparations. This fortress, along with the Anadolu Fortress on the Asian side, allowed the Ottomans to control Bosphorus traffic and cut off Byzantine supply lines.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the water, we observed the Dolmabahçe Palace, a 19th-century Ottoman palace that served as the empire&#8217;s administrative center during its final decades.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-spice-routes-istanbul-hub">The Spice Route&#8217;s Istanbul Hub</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Spice Bazaar, built in 1664 as part of the New Mosque complex, served as a crucial link in the global spice trade. Historically called the Egyptian Bazaar because it was funded by revenues from Egypt, the market connected Asian spice producers with European consumers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/1844c143-523b-45a3-a6b8-a97df2c26bd8" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/1844c143-523b-45a3-a6b8-a97df2c26bd8/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=nBgGDIIGpIhLU3p3SJfBlAA%2FGA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turkey&#8217;s position along historic trade routes gave it access to spices from across Asia, but the country also produces distinctive spices that reflect its unique climate and culinary traditions. Turkish red pepper flakes (pul biber) vary in heat levels and include smoky varieties like isot biber from Şanlıurfa. Sumac, made from berries of the Rhus coriaria bush, provides a citrusy tartness that&#8217;s become essential to Turkish cuisine. Turkish spice culture developed over centuries of trade and cultural exchange. The Ottoman Empire&#8217;s vast territory allowed for the cultivation and trade of numerous spices, while the empire&#8217;s diverse population contributed different culinary traditions. This history explains why Istanbul&#8217;s spice markets offer such variety and why Turkish cuisine incorporates flavours from across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Central Asia.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY/photos/a1414a38-9441-4dd3-9f6b-975830182cfb" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/a1414a38-9441-4dd3-9f6b-975830182cfb/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=cbhR4i5hkqO3FWxji_PRpX6Qy40WUK3yxbH2ySkeTUrH_AaNSC90Ul1NBK8rA3cFcfY&amp;c=VzkKHIKHqIhPZWdziJVmfID1KA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The spice market today caters heavily to tourists, a far cry from what it used to be, with vendors selling everything from traditional spices to novelty items like &#8220;Turkish Viagra tea&#8221; (likely a blend of herbs with no proven medicinal properties). However, authentic spice shops still operate here.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="an-unexpected-group-dynamic">An Unexpected Group Dynamic</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That evening, we met with the rest of the tour group. Our group gathered around a street-side table in Istanbul, waiting for our eighth and final member who had been delayed. Our group had clicked immediately, and someone joked that the missing traveller might be the odd one out. At that moment, a man walked past our table with a distinctly sour expression. We called out the missing member&#8217;s name as a joke, not expecting it to actually be him &#8211; but it was!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His taxi driver had taken him on an expensive detour around the city (taxi drivers across Istanbul are notorious for being scammers), explaining his mood. Once he joined our table and shared his story, his demeanour shifted completely. Later that evening, several of us continued to a rooftop bar, where conversations flowed as easily as the drinks. Istanbul&#8217;s Sultanahmet district, where we stayed, contains numerous hotels with rooftop terraces offering views of the city&#8217;s distinctive silhouette of domes and minarets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our group of eight travelled around the country in a van, staying in budget hotels and exploring destinations that attracted a younger backpacker crowd. The tour format allowed for spontaneous discoveries and shared experiences that individual travel might have missed, as more posts will soon show.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our day began early as we sailed into the flooded caldera of Genovesa Island, a horseshoe-shaped remnant of a volcanic eruption in the far northeast of the Galápagos archipelago. The island&#8217;s circular shape shows its origin: a volcanic crater that collapsed inward after an eruption, allowing seawater to pour in and create a protected bay.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/defcd69a-3f53-4543-8dd4-f0ae0b069908" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/defcd69a-3f53-4543-8dd4-f0ae0b069908/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=mhgGDILIjGjomom%2FV3qC8E7DBg%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Often referred to as &#8220;Bird Island,&#8221; Genovesa supports immense colonies of seabirds, making it one of the most densely populated bird habitats in the Galápagos.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">An Island Full of Birds</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Genovesa is a sanctuary for seabirds, and nowhere is that more obvious than along the Prince Philip&#8217;s Steps trail. From the moment we landed, it felt like we were walking through a live aviary. Every few feet revealed different birds. First, we saw the Nazca boobies. These large, white seabirds with black-tipped wings and yellow eyes are one of the iconic &#8220;Big 15&#8221; species of the Galápagos. We saw both attentive parents and their fuzzy, down-covered chicks. Some of the chicks were already testing out their wings, flapping them clumsily as they stood in place.</p>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/3acff8d6-2a5a-42f3-b77d-36e9e9abc60c" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/3acff8d6-2a5a-42f3-b77d-36e9e9abc60c/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=HvgFDIBIgnV0doegmoKWnx26%2BA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Nazca boobies didn’t seem to care about our presence. Some sat in the middle of the trail, forcing us to detour. They didn’t beg for food or try to flee. It was clear we were in <em>their</em> space. They looked at us with curiosity, as if evaluating <em>our</em> behaviour. One was even attracted to the bright coloured shoes of someone in our group. We joked at the bird was imprinting on them.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/2ec78ffa-5d09-429d-9fb8-ef61206227dc" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/2ec78ffa-5d09-429d-9fb8-ef61206227dc/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=IoUFHIT3aodqk3h2ZnctcNcCdw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also encountered several red-footed boobies up close (another Big 15 of the Galápagos ). Unlike the Nazca or blue-footed boobies, red-footed boobies are smaller and more agile in flight, using their dexterity to catch flying fish. They are also the only booby species in the Galápagos that nest in trees, thanks to their strong, grasping feet. Their nesting behaviour allows them to avoid the crowded ground-level colonies favoured by other species. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/6b4cb360-08d8-4949-9684-6f2d3df3321b" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6b4cb360-08d8-4949-9684-6f2d3df3321b/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=l%2FgFFIJ9dZd%2BhXhdipCKn7oDdw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also observed many great frigatebirds nesting. We had the fortunate of seeing the males with their red throat sacs inflated like balloons. However, we didn’t see the closely related magnificent frigatebird, which looks nearly identical but differs subtly in iridescent sheen and eye ring.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further along the trail, we also spotted one of the iconic Darwin&#8217;s finches. This one was a brown finch, and though we knew it belonged to one of the local species, it was remarkably difficult to tell whether it was the small, medium, or large ground finch. These species differ primarily by the size and shape of their beaks, which have adapted to different types of seeds. In the field, even seasoned naturalists can find it tricky to differentiate them without observing feeding behaviour or using binoculars to compare subtle proportions. Genovesa is home to several of these species.</p>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/d076fb2f-7ecc-4d2f-8f24-855fa275e36e" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/d076fb2f-7ecc-4d2f-8f24-855fa275e36e/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=3ygKFILyf0V2eYZ2eIjxhBdPaA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Spotting Rarities with a Naturalist&#8217;s Eye</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We were lucky to be hiking with someone in our group who had spent decades as a professional naturalist. Her eye for detail helped us spot species we would have otherwise missed, including Galápagos doves nestled in a rocky crevice.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/6290db8a-b910-4c86-bdfa-ee3561e43303" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6290db8a-b910-4c86-bdfa-ee3561e43303/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=HQgODIKVmHeWiId%2Fdoe3fI%2F75w%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our naturalist companion was able to spot the elusive short-eared owl. The short-eared owl is the only owl on Genovesa and is a daytime hunter, adapted to prey on storm petrels that nest in the island&#8217;s lava crevices. Seeing one is considered a highlight by bird enthusiasts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/b74a228f-61bc-4397-8c5f-71af08bb0737" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/b74a228f-61bc-4397-8c5f-71af08bb0737/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=IRkCDICkSttUlYeFkVBwUv7nRw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She spotted this owl even when swarms of birds circled the crater. From a distance it looked like hundreds, maybe more.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/d753bd27-d243-42e9-b412-689fb7b227f7/video/playback?key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=pucNHISHiHePeHiFeIh4gI0H2A%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked the guide how often people got pooped on by birds, and he said &#8220;all the time&#8221;.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Did the Birds Get Here?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we observed the vast diversity of birdlife on Genovesa, a natural question arose: how did all these birds get here in the first place? Genovesa, like all the Galápagos Islands, is of volcanic origin and has never been connected to any continent. That means every species had to arrive by sea or air. In the case of birds, it&#8217;s a mix of seabirds and land birds that flew in from the mainland over generations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Seabirds like the Nazca booby, red-footed booby, and great frigatebird are strong fliers capable of covering vast distances over open ocean. They likely reached the archipelago by chance during migration or storms, eventually settling and breeding. Unlike land birds, which evolved in relative isolation after their ancestors arrived, many seabirds still travel between islands or even back to mainland South America during their lifetimes.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Circumnavigating the Crater</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After the hike, we boarded zodiacs for a ride around the inner edge of the caldera to get a better sense of its geologic origins. The steep, eroded walls of the crater revealed layers of volcanic tuff &#8211; compressed ash from past eruptions. In places, erosion had carved angular overhangs and caves. The crater rim is breached on one side, allowing the ocean to flood in and creating a calm anchorage for small vessels like ours.</p>

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Along the cliff face and the trees above, we continued to see more birds nesting. There were even some marine iguanas resting on rocks.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Courting Frigates and a Nap in the Sand</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After lunch, we embarked on another short nature. Right as we began, we passed a sea lions sprawled out comfortably on the sand, fast asleep. They lay there without a care in the world, entirely unfazed by our presence. Many Galápagos animals are not concerned with human visitors, as long as we respect their space.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg/photos/d34d5dc6-afd6-4475-91a8-8dcf26c83e72" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/d34d5dc6-afd6-4475-91a8-8dcf26c83e72/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=5xgGBIDph6q0l2d%2BsWB5h%2F8lJw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we continued, we came across a group of nesting frigatebirds in full courtship display, with their bright red throat sacs fully inflated. They flapped their wings, made rattling calls, and shook their inflated sacs in dramatic fashion &#8211; all in an effort to catch the eye of a passing female. The sounds and motions were loud and theatrical.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/3701a297-702b-463b-bf04-b13f1fd8af80/video/playback?key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=VggGDILGiYd0ZYePmYPET6VFBw%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our guide mentioned research into their mating behaviours, including experiments where scientists altered the appearance of the sacs by painting them blue. Surprisingly, the colour change didn’t seem to affect female interest. In another case, a researcher punctured the sac to study healing &#8211; and it reportedly repaired itself within a few days. These stories underscored how much remains unknown about even the most visible species.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Cloudy Snorkel and Playful Sea Lions</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We ended the day with a snorkel along the rocky beach. Unfortunately, the water was too cloudy to see much underwater life. The coarse volcanic rocks made walking on the beach difficult; a few of us got small stones lodged in our flippers, which rubbed uncomfortably against our skin.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/465a9b44-10d7-4607-b141-d99ec5f123da/video/playback?key=gvpLnecetXBBk_efaCGpdAwVsvFZXbbrBXl2Hnjh26qdwtFRkoByL-STvQlCWD30HMg&amp;c=o%2BcFHISHnsywfCJnIk93kIUHSQ%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But the snorkelling wasn’t the real highlight. Back on shore, a group of sea lions came ashore and began to play. They chased one another, nipped each other’s flippers, rolled onto their backs, and flopped in and out of the surf in an endless loop of games. Their energy and antics entertained us for nearly twenty minutes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing we noticed throughout the trip was the near absence of native terrestrial mammals or amphibians on the islands. Unlike birds or reptiles, which can fly or survive extended periods at sea, most land animals couldn&#8217;t make the crossing from the South American mainland. The Galápagos are over 900 kilometres from the coast, and animals unable to float, fly, or raft on vegetation simply never had the chance to colonize these remote islands.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Day 2 of our Antarctic expedition took us to: Bongrain Point with its vibrant Adelie penguin colony and a fascinating zodiac tour around Lagoon Island. Each offered a distinctive glimpse into the wilderness that defines the southernmost continent.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bongrain Point</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The morning began with a slightly challenging landing at Bongrain Point. Our skilled zodiac drivers carefully navigated through numerous small icebergs scattered across the water. At one particularly difficult passage, one of the crew members actually had to enter the frigid water to push an iceberg out of our path &#8211; they were there to make sure their guests were safe and could enjoy the adventure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-video"><video controls src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5c835c3d-8cbe-45af-8e73-e8133110759b/video/playback?key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=3ucJDIKAiHeoaIdjant%2FXPr5pQ%3D%3D"></video></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once ashore, we were greeted by a colony of Adélie penguins spread across the rocky beach. The colony had a distinct orange hue &#8211; a result of their filthy guano staining the landscape.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE/photos/41bd337a-a3ac-4393-9c55-f6325e099305" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/41bd337a-a3ac-4393-9c55-f6325e099305/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=oPcNFIKGh3d%2FiHiLd4iJcJQIGA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We even got to see the adult penguins feeding their young.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE/photos/678accd6-b34b-476a-a7a6-e6a69c5904b6" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/678accd6-b34b-476a-a7a6-e6a69c5904b6/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=qucNDYLnaGifV5aIlXmHdwOnOWC6" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We watched as penguins hopped onto the small icebergs near the shore, skillfully balancing on the shifting ice.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE/photos/5c86db84-6d91-4a85-b565-8358dc77099b" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/5c86db84-6d91-4a85-b565-8358dc77099b/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=ZdcNDIJ6eHd%2FiHd0eId3cGsHtw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nearby, we spotted skeletal remains of birds, though their cause of death was uncertain. Given recent concerns about avian flu, we briefly speculated about the possibility, though it was more likely a natural occurrence, but we&#8217;ll never know. &nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE/photos/d54f1dd8-641e-464d-817a-f1009ad945c1" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/d54f1dd8-641e-464d-817a-f1009ad945c1/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=IPgBBICQYEpvSIdPlCaIvXD2CQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similar to our previous visit to <a href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2025/03/08/antarctic-expedition-day-1-red-rock-ridge-and-stonington-island/" data-type="post" data-id="10949" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Rock Ridge</a>, we remained along the shoreline during our exploration. Looming inland were massive mountains that would present a significant challenge to traverse on foot. Beyond these natural barriers likely lies little more than additional rock and ice formations, as Antarctica lacks terrestrial life forms that cannot swim or fly, with the exception of some extraordinarily hardy plant species and microscopic fauna.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE/photos/90f224fb-274d-46eb-baf1-908d3a964cc0" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/90f224fb-274d-46eb-baf1-908d3a964cc0/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=YOcNDIJ%2Fd3euhYdalmlwYgcodQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One fascinating geological feature we noticed was the abundance of rocks with remarkably clean splits along the beach. The most likely explanation was probably due to water seeping into tiny cracks in the rocks, then as the ice freezes, it expands, gradually forcing the stone apart.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE/photos/a7d36f07-756d-409d-a7bd-4ed22675fd9e" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/a7d36f07-756d-409d-a7bd-4ed22675fd9e/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=WMrDKNA2NFomX27dzJB7tMkRJHfPDrfbFRDkUErO7jGbucOoQwqlVq6lhA_95ctvAmE&amp;c=JAgGBIDhV4dvx3WkeHbQVwScSA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lagoon Island</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our afternoon activity shifted from a landing to a zodiac tour around Lagoon Island, allowing us to experience the Antarctic environment from a different perspective.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk/photos/6fb70cf0-3e48-4dac-ba0e-cc461d206ab0" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/6fb70cf0-3e48-4dac-ba0e-cc461d206ab0/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk&amp;c=HQgGDIKDc6iUWIh2OM%2BYcXA5CA%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We cruised past groups of elephant seals sprawled on the shore, their massive bodies lounging contentedly after feeding (I interpret this to be a food coma). We learned that these seals will eventually engage in territorial battles to establish dominance, with the victorious male earning mating privileges with the females &#8211; nature&#8217;s ancient selection process at work. They are the deepest diving air-breathing non-cetaceans and have been recorded at a maximum of 2,388 m. They eat a wide variety of sea life such as squid, fish, and krill.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk/photos/c557157e-5baa-409a-a8f5-6af6ebee9e9a" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/c557157e-5baa-409a-a8f5-6af6ebee9e9a/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk&amp;c=GwgOFYKZZoePiHiGlzmHiJWAVglY" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further along our journey, we spotted what initially appeared to be another penguin colony from a distance. However, our knowledgeable guides identified them as Antarctic cormorants. While penguins and cormorants are both black and white, the key distinction is that cormorants can fly, unlike penguins, and their colonies aren&#8217;t orange with guano. Our guide shared a helpful identification tip: &#8220;if it looks like a penguin but flies, it&#8217;s probably a cormorant.&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk/photos/1cbcf1ea-3307-4a01-8436-b12690604626" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/1cbcf1ea-3307-4a01-8436-b12690604626/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk&amp;c=nucRDIJ1h3hviIeLd5qSjyX6SQ%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The zodiac tour also provided a close-up view of icebergs in various stages of melting. Their shapes and sizes were ever-changing, shaped by differences in ice density and shifting weight distribution. Occasionally, when a section of an iceberg melted unevenly, it could rotate about, exposing a fresh surface to the elements.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk?at=ae9fb5d8-21b7-4e08-a8be-694f4f168fbb" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/ae9fb5d8-21b7-4e08-a8be-694f4f168fbb/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk&amp;c=IrYNHIKGd3d%2Fh3dyiIeWcFYKZw%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the distance, we could see enormous ice mountains stretching across the horizon. The clear Antarctic air created an interesting optical illusion—these massive formations appeared much closer than their actual distance. This phenomenon made it challenging to accurately gauge the scale of the landscape, adding to the otherworldly quality of the Antarctic environment.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.henrypoon.com/share/gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk/photos/57b3a47b-ac18-414c-ad22-72c3c2a76639" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://photos.henrypoon.com/api/assets/57b3a47b-ac18-414c-ad22-72c3c2a76639/thumbnail?size=preview&amp;key=gGyNUGsyVrpsmxOV9NsImBmViTduVh6HAcPg5n_CHMeD85wLS9lT5WZ57-JltCQHiBk&amp;c=JOcNDIBEd3d%2Fh4d5iHZzEE4Y8g%3D%3D" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just like the day before, as we experience the continent in different ways, we continue to gain a new appreciation for the immensity and raw beauty of Antarctica &#8211; a continent largely untouched by human influence, where nature still reigns supreme.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I can totally see why people call Orlando the &#8220;theme park capital of the world&#8221;. It definitely has an unparalleled collection of world-class amusement parks likeDisney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. Additionally, the city is home to Kennedy Space Center, the launch site for the Apollo missions that landed humans on the moon.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOfbSYGuVB1mQPuonZQh9lYLWHlhyvrtlpAUf1PTCvn90LHl8mGETOaPF3abO4Vtw/photo/AF1QipORyGeQpc3g0wiBbzHFwdpj6V4uHKi7DxMoPW9q?key=WExzUlRmZ0FFYllfVHlPS2trTmV5RVozdktSMFhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPwSGnXRRYRUtT1QA2T_7TjvL9svbpGmyV8hbehcjnb5CIivR_93RwlqSuT2G87nd0e4TuU89AF7EfeoscCaP9nEVCn0UcOkcd0NGywMxPAZ-7e-wG12E3FUGCW-9-6Pq1vuXCTJ7d-UM7DyxNzNQqgtQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We drove out to Cape Canaveral to visit the Kennedy Space Center, the primary launch site for human spaceflight missions in the United States. It&#8217;s one of the major attractions that doesn&#8217;t center around amusement parks. Visitors are welcomed by the Rocket Garden that showcases a diverse range of rockets used for past achievements that serve at a tribute to the achievements of space exploration.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOfbSYGuVB1mQPuonZQh9lYLWHlhyvrtlpAUf1PTCvn90LHl8mGETOaPF3abO4Vtw/photo/AF1QipNnKnbicAT5py1EAlcsw-_5vvSWjf_zlavvgWaG?key=WExzUlRmZ0FFYllfVHlPS2trTmV5RVozdktSMFhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOUSTu1p2DS_W2pFUHwSL7sTe96MyzCZ2khv2Xr1PYjtzV2YMnQpqMXafTmR2VB8CbblTrRtXWEmdFP1ExvB_nXYMAxXsBdHtX0ekJWFw4kK1HFJJrHcDAKUV3_d4fn2RMe0Wr-8j58Uwr3HrqTtMWRiw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the key attractions there is a the tour that takes visitors around the space center, and one of the key attractions along the tour is the Vehicle Assembly Building, a colossal structure where NASA assembles and prepares its largest rockets for space missions, including the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. It stands as an iconic symbol of human space exploration and engineering prowess and is one of the largest buildings in the world. It played a pivotal role in assembling rockets and preparing space shuttles for their missions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOfbSYGuVB1mQPuonZQh9lYLWHlhyvrtlpAUf1PTCvn90LHl8mGETOaPF3abO4Vtw/photo/AF1QipMyia0uBpewK6KOFoL6YXL4PzBg_alUWQ8K7Bgx?key=WExzUlRmZ0FFYllfVHlPS2trTmV5RVozdktSMFhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczO-9VGk5II3fWgn5K8y7N7YTr4KxGUEKvjfa2uaKmn4rsHj37Mv25MMIMoelfT5ZKKqskXYPUQtaiPtdibkhe8lIMo2LNhNNX1NInCjXqfjhy65Wn6DAlvkdDCZwypfpANPIPbAx7LDlt0217OI5Z1oZg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another cool attraction was the mission control room. It&#8217;s no longer in use, and has since been repurposed as a simulation of a rocket launch. As the launch clock continues counting down, different systems of the rocket come online and their statuses are reflected on the screens and dashboards around the room. Until finally, when the countdown goes to zero, rocket launch noises fill the room and the screens show the rocket launching. The windows behind also glow bright orange to show the burn of the thrust.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOfbSYGuVB1mQPuonZQh9lYLWHlhyvrtlpAUf1PTCvn90LHl8mGETOaPF3abO4Vtw/photo/AF1QipM-wsz-wNeVZvAlPFw1vMgq4fbUA8oAsvkkI1oI?key=WExzUlRmZ0FFYllfVHlPS2trTmV5RVozdktSMFhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPowVp6jklv51qqM9qLM6xTrbhIfXBlEThdXICm1agRHAvuuQD1_CqVgVGFwJ59RWkwgf0GB5qnC-qVbU-mqgtzoMSDPnDlFqXc43MaIZeSG3KwyQgcZzVbZk1k1uqUzeAuWLBGIELZRp4IC3GAW9MKlg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The tour concludes with an exhibit of the Saturn V rocket, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built &#8211; the one that carried astronauts to the moon. It was difficult to grasp the scale of the rocket until I saw it in person. Each section is separated, showing each of the stages of the rocket launch. The Saturn V rocket launches by igniting its powerful engines, generating millions of pounds of thrust, and lifting off from the launch pad. As each section of the rocket runs of fuel, it separates from the rest, and propels the spacecraft and astronauts into space (most of the fuel is spend leaving Earth&#8217;s gravity). Attached to the end are the modules for the lunar lander and the craft for returning back to Earth.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOfbSYGuVB1mQPuonZQh9lYLWHlhyvrtlpAUf1PTCvn90LHl8mGETOaPF3abO4Vtw/photo/AF1QipODmG2pS5MdyIrqM2d5RkbWk_6vfWAsmG2eKH3D?key=WExzUlRmZ0FFYllfVHlPS2trTmV5RVozdktSMFhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczNJf-ZIh54tqwupivcT2owPT3gRV4M8s-65Fz-st4HijKEV37mKD8tbkrSVfoSnG-Y-a-k-qIBbqvr9yt3xxjm-0C9EQLgLPGAxgFd1P0ZsK9dEn_BbiuS2FTiJxrm5nrhaznTEDV60Dv4Zna-W0FURyw=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was also cool to see the lunar lander up close. It was a spacecraft designed to land astronauts on the moon during NASA&#8217;s Apollo missions. It consisted of two parts: the descent stage, which landed on the moon&#8217;s surface, and the ascent stage, which launched the astronauts back into lunar orbit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOfbSYGuVB1mQPuonZQh9lYLWHlhyvrtlpAUf1PTCvn90LHl8mGETOaPF3abO4Vtw/photo/AF1QipOkvyBRGBCWV9t2V4yzMaiy6R7UTjKMxZCXIWEz?key=WExzUlRmZ0FFYllfVHlPS2trTmV5RVozdktSMFhn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMd8IVvWlrgsWXW0B4zArA5EuocdZhaFuwlmiXoxTa6WDG--nE6SoQFjr5QJUA0CeGMf9KEsIYUXxwloJ62ghatK4eivh5L3gHrH_uFZ4XaogNxOrGsKmEL9VE2b5gf6RgSxBF8nAlxfd1rsBTI-JNxpg=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 1981, the space shuttle program was launched with the aim of creating a reusable spacecraft capable of launching payloads into space, deploying satellites, conducting scientific research, and safely returning to Earth. The exhibit also featured a simulator that simulates the experience of a rocket launch aboard a space shuttle &#8211; essentially a motion simulator that mimicked the G-forces and movements of a shuttle launch. Supposedly it&#8217;s a high fidelity simulation of a rocket launch, but surprisingly the G-forces only went up to what I vaguely recall to be 3.5Gs and felt actually quite mild (even children went on the ride and were completely okay).<br><br>A visit to the Kennedy Space Center adds a unique and educational dimension to the Orlando experience. From the awe-inspiring Rocket Garden to the monumental Vehicle Assembly Building, the center embodies the triumphs of human space exploration. It was cool to experience the simulated rocket and shuttle launch and getting up close to the lunar lander and Saturn V rocket.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aside from tropical beaches in Bali, there&#8217;s quite a bit to do inland in Ubud. We hired <a href="https://www.instagram.com/baliflow_id/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Enrico (opens in a new tab)">Enrico</a>, a driver/tour guide who spoke super good English and he was around our age so it was super easy chat with him. The first destination he took us to was a coffee plantation (I never knew what a coffee plant looked like before this!), where they had <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Luwak coffee (opens in a new tab)" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_luwak" target="_blank">luwak coffee</a> and a slew of different coffees and teas for us to try. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN-26mDX_B0HX0Ra4yH9Htj8KwilOEDX565CuQwq0wHDxAFVRKbdsqfCC2P-qrsQg/photo/AF1QipO3SzEcnp7Mz96N5B7m_OHReNdBTpywDBz4-9w6?key=RmE4eTBhUlhLRkMtblJDZnRnYXo4QUIyN21xbHFn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEXYqTtoLDhzFr-SQWG1e327sTlOpV5UTFe_DxGTbtZlAbeGNWfdc1HGezaOibpindBk54ptcst1IHaP1WMYHUzzntWX0hy5ozuC1AMh_0JKYB5x1BgPFZOZrscFpNtMTLyobbVbiGs_YHpJR_CrNp8VXA=w1636-h920-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a><figcaption>The luwak coffee is at the top, and each of the other coffees/teas are labeled <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)" href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN-26mDX_B0HX0Ra4yH9Htj8KwilOEDX565CuQwq0wHDxAFVRKbdsqfCC2P-qrsQg/photo/AF1QipOSh-LKFxIMX0mY-pD4eNbc7K4B6nL6fxiFE05w?key=RmE4eTBhUlhLRkMtblJDZnRnYXo4QUIyN21xbHFn" target="_blank">here</a>.  There&#8217;s even durian coffee!</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The luwak coffee has no added milk or sugar and is sweet on its own. It tastes like regular black coffee with sugar in it, but then I&#8217;m not a coffee drinker, so my taste for it isn&#8217;t as nuanced.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The luwak eats the coffee cherry (the fruit that contains the coffee bean), and. The bean itself is partially digested and defecated and then used to make the coffee. Yes, the coffee is actually made from part poop. Plantations send people out into the woods to specifically look for the poop. The guide said 1 kg takes 42 days to produce.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s one of the most expensive if not most expensive coffees in the world. Our guide at the plantation called it a &#8220;cat-poo-ccino&#8221;!! The plantation doesn&#8217;t actually charge for any of the tours and samples (except for the cup of luwak coffee), but rather they rely on people buying coffee and tea to make money.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN-26mDX_B0HX0Ra4yH9Htj8KwilOEDX565CuQwq0wHDxAFVRKbdsqfCC2P-qrsQg/photo/AF1QipOfxvj7FqeG_D0b2mL-S-F2nilkbiQ2OyIZ2jte?key=RmE4eTBhUlhLRkMtblJDZnRnYXo4QUIyN21xbHFn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OoXQrajrhxC5pKUFD6FVwI8bFGL3ztUxLnehiNmGCQfD48x0MybNCvdo_jCmuP69wrZuuVIVU7rDt_dieks9jIGx09d0nXBUgAddLs3otpgMi2fqke4pQw8w7zo_MXz4Y1dTaxVqh37q8u6wrg--Sd6bXs1k5a-dqh564g3A5bgrCaczqtNt6YLW7SdDH6fSRssDzOhV3KaauxYhLusOyr40SQWQYnuVwEruVnLrbPA6eSINim0uDZ1OwEUHd-bOE0R2WFNoeAVbethnPkDsiZmYbMyp0fXxovdSszhW_2y_F1E1IUdrp8iaJ8A6q2xmJCfaiyBhAx7WWAt3KXUmCtVO3QGbZyb3-0ZEOD7oUYp3UVbUgKYG62Fe2n8lqLSs7BCtTzFLHzPYNLGYkt9h0Lo3PVhUY5B_vE5GUqsTqCW8tP2edL6CSo2Xh7AZuWiM6wgOePxoa6urYMHOWpTtHEGqaoPn8pdYuiNQWaypujsw-3H2BO87kbbisNnLpk9dywe6Ykkol82WoCmWoLXNJgb2RFHTxB1_Zmpcb1flxfy1u0d7dfm7rH14SyxOJXdUs3Q8I27bSe5QKwAY2SLVAjozGUxZbN7lm06yhyN5jqhlrmiecziWdvZSfpJHtaiVMLyrRN2sgnYD6d7zEFnwVYL4VIV6LBmgWg4VBzto5NGJkmWOxwzS-MP4AmfIIkb4AKubwMsKQIQ4UXrEkle2TNcY_w=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a><figcaption>They&#8217;re nocturnal, and our guide at the plantation tried to wake the poor guy up</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next stop was the monkey forest. It was really cool to see monkeys running around with humans so close to them.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN-26mDX_B0HX0Ra4yH9Htj8KwilOEDX565CuQwq0wHDxAFVRKbdsqfCC2P-qrsQg/photo/AF1QipPvRDGWDF1rbuUZZ5hxSt5EAJvLq6kyBNw9aA_O?key=RmE4eTBhUlhLRkMtblJDZnRnYXo4QUIyN21xbHFn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AL9nZEVmz-R8ypZcIeLdmtN4_Z1jukCrT2KgbzV8-tU3Mz7N_tFDINz-PVAxDuRCsDVkNHaltJPM5JnwKuiYZ2-xWa6wYs94HTh3PBJQho0k3ynp6xmcYeBZH_s6Y7JpukbuUYdZGwuB6lP2ypbP9jueKM70Aw=w1636-h920-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a><figcaption>They literally just sit in front of you, forcing you to walk around them</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There was a sign that said to not stare at the monkey for too long, but I clearly forgot&#8230;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Monkeys like to play too!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The monkey forest was the coolest place in the whole tour. Mike&#8217;s video has even more clips of the monkeys. Check it out below.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next stop were some rice fields. But a freak rainstorm occurred and cut that way short. At first we thought, it&#8217;d be okay with a little, but then it just poured. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From there we drove back to our accommodations and passed by some more rice fields. Throughout the car ride, we chatted with our guide about sorts of things like the history of Indonesian independence, North American culture, and life in Indonesia. One thing that really stood out to me was that he spoke very fondly about how dad prepared dog meat really and how much he enjoyed eating it. To him, it&#8217;s something super normal and part of the culture, but it seems so foreign to us in North America.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People hear about Thailand and immediately think &#8220;oh you can go ride elephants!&#8221;, but in reality, many elephants in that business are not treated well by their owners. The various elephant sanctuaries in Thailand purchase elephants (funded by donations) from these owners to save them from abuse. We got the chance to visit one of these <a href="https://www.elephantnaturepark.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephant sanctuaries</a>. It costs ~$100 USD per person, but it&#8217;s cool to see elephants up close and the money goes to a good cause.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each elephant has a story of what it spent its life doing while in captivity such as elephant riding, or illegal logging, etc. Some even have injuries like broken hips from their past abuse. But now they get to live out the rest of their lives in the sanctuary.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMJ6rY_of9m61OdSjgalDanT3mh0zkGhjN-yg9nSpU8xtjI4gr886-e_LQm0ElWwA/photo/AF1QipO7PfixiHXMpq93dRBbxj7Flet7pXKuXoCot7uj?key=YmowMlN6V2VuNW1iQzlOTGFoVGFva1lhZ1JHQUFR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kC4ssChROjgwd8FdMByof_UnyJiQIswSWNtDEuQHwaJr5QfsCfz2z1JxwIjrrqQdLUUHaNgD7pfgGZnwD9Iyj-ptvPRbxp_-CyG2WicyPV_akfgei-VqzJmdSnQC1yWAX52_e2_GlBYoQ47u0zVzI0yOokUfyv9WEAtANk4ILYAem32aSlAB0Lt6IUoyvOMbI9pYR1n7-_nnruiQ2dstnLGUHX00kHTNw-UTahVkLOEqbH65iNpSEuYQrzFHG6uMIUpgeoIo1F5boG00wr7KyceVbjQdBSt4htjRduzTvaqhbvbLGAxzGOkx2ncsPbjaGWrJcdqsrG0sciNGMSzQQRRC1MDI6aBb5Yxg54givm4r_vNO98E1a98Og43iNCbHpxZry_BN5QI5jKQ9qBj9y_VYyt0fSYGsGfvAeSJC7EyTRPVtwB6AJD-vaZC1ByeIO_zPBSM1-EMLGHTLPOpHBIOmfyYqxCEyRY9xjTencSaHyps_yaqrsSWyjO4plIDxKY2lqM9T3xNJ1irsORQL9edIXAl8d4AbMEIEMv3GlEaegl_axyg7ygUH8kJjT2b6dQaGzGPD4IscNzn8c4rt4w0xo0SMQ3jxViElWG6xyzD3ychRrUQvCwUCwco2UqgTiP9gs6uqULtOtwZJH582fj6E4yEOrGxbFK-zSQloIuKoT2BLhin-MI0CIwdSCIsSv47R4UQZNFn2TIx3qj2ExuB97Q=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The santuary is not just for elephants, but for cats too! There are also dogs lazing about as well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We started the tour off with feeding the younger elephants. Even though they&#8217;re only a few years old, they&#8217;re still huge. It was cool to feel the elephant grab an entire bunch of bananas with its trunk and put it in its mouth. For a brief moment, I felt the scaly skin of its trunk, covered in dirt, brush against my hand. The reason elephants are covered in dirt is because the dirt protects their skin from the sun. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMJ6rY_of9m61OdSjgalDanT3mh0zkGhjN-yg9nSpU8xtjI4gr886-e_LQm0ElWwA/photo/AF1QipN1tPWBKFqjnpmLHjBvZAD4zXUagmxROwzdRScs?key=YmowMlN6V2VuNW1iQzlOTGFoVGFva1lhZ1JHQUFR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4dNYojfrj-RH_SW5lQGf6Dpp1VqdraGmCrXpxozUbGbShDfyouRK2UcPPV3P2QguDodSAn-JG6A7zb9yBVSHPji6KtRUjSt2spwfPN3NenUwb46cP_abbmCRd92Sjau3_kGaoCeHcUHo_weQAx3TcXaNgNIrHGHaMo3hsWJ2pnB_hdihDMQxBh2LrG86IANC7HXD81FBPPA0HOSPhdNKBUlm8_3jDRgK6brAItRUSR8M7plAUq-_X0raxj77CQyMWfKnyomjdkyINnoD3qfmGapy_unbQ7WVIJLVHPSeqPrBgkr16ACpYBrg62y0qtqLeHBEiVannnfGmyfD-q23PvOUg-rNkH6oRPnhpUJejj--e8IoW-Y1eeAIq4gEyB6G6J05NBNjYwqzT5HjRVi6Uzld2UfjqKf28l_HXHk2Zer4ZFYzXlusk4ri3ETnJdAmwVpM_ofRqHGTBpTTclagCUKYc_aeVZNKHJh-Pf6cXSBl_LIqbiruDoZvHEkSjtcyiGKD2vdyUBGM-Rfu8MX0opneO4_sS91KsJ6LSd6AMvnlJjoEFZ18XRZ_ctpTvPrI6Cdwx3l89rkg6v1k01mSzyJyAkbbmIjxvHwfSp9-SnE6_K7dPgGK6PQf0bAFOKaUSYWP21yZKoiF-ISzIx7nBDM-CDUBQuW-vUbH8lEEiv5FxgCarYxdCuhNHLuHvSzaboyACfV3u_ip_nvI8E2metO_6w=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We got to pet a few of these elephants. I learned that elephants actually have hair! Some elephants had less hair due to their abuse. The guide explained that when they are used as riding elephants, they tend to lose a lot of hair from people climbing on and off of them. Their skin feels scaly as one might expect, but the sparse hairs are quite stiff &#8211; kind of like the bristles on a toothbrush. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMJ6rY_of9m61OdSjgalDanT3mh0zkGhjN-yg9nSpU8xtjI4gr886-e_LQm0ElWwA/photo/AF1QipOvTjN6YXNV8qIFq1BRxz-VSaKMjU6-32h_I-2x?key=YmowMlN6V2VuNW1iQzlOTGFoVGFva1lhZ1JHQUFR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MoqN5ME_yxnyZATXnF2ECjsaxOtcDax_WveQjfjduPDlF2oOymCEarKSzLR9C0iT_L-bST3sR-v8P4qU8GiFYHxk8-OuBMlAwkyTdb-xqP5DSbZupZaqTEM14oRsRuWs8qCTDHppuwRDwodtpcz-qOKeZaXEG_OuFmdbkiPHvWTCNEf2v_uKuuWP52EHgxhZEC6OYVRkcJ29iGyVUXV5fjfMICPc0BjZW_0SZR21G8P9eypHYPnuPL3SX8LQO6D5lrMGK1GxLZ95Spr9LN5PjGebw5upNacR3gaorSdhlUHHA7461YlVoAHt05TypzXGQFoQFhkBdmmlDso-ZHxXBwveeFh4vF_c70KqrU7zKVOAeL8xJIxp6LbohucMgWoSKeYKZwUcqC-z1Lo56HRdXNCLrie3nZJCnHzc9I_cpzcJ1gvNGOhNlTag5EA7fQ1j6XKtMINr6n9L7JRqYXpdcdfIe8-kLq0KEKHKmKrojim9TwVj_u0e7dAccBBzKj5IA02_Jr6fZOMsSfEmmp7h4UFIbwrGY4BHGXi0esfkv3W-xFympspzapJ8wvLg5O8o-qo-31jBsSse9ZHBTWo6OLuzLQ_qbbDy4d-Wba5AfYf8G3-siaHgGjEwI0dsvc16mzoHiWdxng1YPPl3vkNwT1Rrmct52jqEgzHy9UrPwpfMjYqsHvS8lVovUt-TCXefg8W26ymnFv7pDdQJZtSqWdqQyA=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was so hot that day, they went playing in the river. It was probably the hottest day of the trip so far. So hot that I really didn&#8217;t want to move out in the sun.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMJ6rY_of9m61OdSjgalDanT3mh0zkGhjN-yg9nSpU8xtjI4gr886-e_LQm0ElWwA/photo/AF1QipP0ZYPvHBBsfUW-owQvhGgCtrq2GHxAI78QsasT?key=YmowMlN6V2VuNW1iQzlOTGFoVGFva1lhZ1JHQUFR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xWQ0KwL3xJIKYGOzteQnQUyuV3SJ1KSiPGWUXsNabzNC78craNEgaWT7QRPxxWXJW6fyhUd8VP7wQBWDS6naTOgMfvMnQP7jOAK5AGPEM-9iRsVdUhfQxFd5mg7UcOdVWEN7re-HawWXDTEeQfmtwSWHkgzTFChbv7SnX0NCM6vERd4Fuc430q9O0pKSLE4Z8qikGr8u5ynOUCkR1NwH6UZvNnfG5MqerOfQZIvdB7pHN7FVEyvyEHcH7D99yP6DGZiE8S9-i807m0ttZlP9gUxyMuEh1incxb0Ebh5qZLLE85RMcdVD1AdDQRTUIbZm2ufMeFvieSmUxlWeSytQrgsPqItX82uTdfy-apYNAdPzyltIjqchraXJj1U0PPenmDd0OTjMzbum0oTuw6iAsDaBHnoNpLc_LFqBD2Pb1wBtZMi2SCkSSdkpdzmcM60-UQkHtN3xkMeLcMtLjCPT3g_z1vMldXmcXVrwCqhRy9maVBZoni-Wq_K6kW_SfrR0hXDw0zN2BmQ5mheeBa269OZJpAVQs178Q86PVT1XKMvJRvMKHwhVPz7rpRWtWACbo8BKmq7nZEme0GLqkEpw59EN6GxAxNeEQiwvEdO85pLx4Y4hkaEO7ECEey_KbSnOmKGSH4aSfBbi01dgufln-jQ_Tg0vCXizJLO6BSmoqTQlbsirdhFtJQ1nAGhssXm5qCffeibP9pn7IAkZrW5V2hEAHQ=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This guy came running right for us. The guide said some of these elephants were the same ones we fed, and so it was possible they recognized our scents thinking we had more food. There are no fences in between humans and elephants, and there are attendants everywhere that the elephants listen to. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The guide told us that the more sunken in the elephant&#8217;s head is at its temple, the older it is. As it ages, the air inside the elephants skull slowly leaves, which causes the sunkeness. I definitely noticed this between the smaller/younger elephants and the larger/old ones.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Be sure to check out Mike&#8217;s video about the elephant park. It&#8217;s got clips of us feeding the elephants and us trying to dodge them as they charge toward us. There&#8217;s even an elephant that peels the bananas before eating them!</p>
