The build itself starts with the rear suspensions. There’s actually a spring built in that makes the suspension work. The four arms are constrained to only allow up/down motion, while the central axle is attached to a ball and socket joint so that the rotational power can still be transferred from the engine. When the car is built, you can push the car down and it’ll bounce back up to its neutral position.

The set also includes a Lego reconstruction of the differential. The differential allows each wheel to spin at different rates. The video shows this in action with each wheel spinning opposite directions. It even supports the transmission of power from the engine itself! It’s really quite impressive!

I wasn’t as impressed with the engine as much though. There are six cylinders, so I expected each piston to compress each 1/6 of a rotation, but Lego has trouble with this kind of resolution so it doesn’t do that. Instead, as the drive shaft is rotated, two pistons can compress simultaneously.

From there, the build continues with the construction of the front of the car. The car is two-wheel drive, just like the real F1 cars (done to save weight)

Because the F1 car is so low to the ground, the steering column must be horizontal. The lack of 4WD reduces the space required for the front of the car means there’s less competition for space for the steering column.

The rest of the build completes the outer shell of the car – the aerodynamic stuff. There’s a lot of sticker placement and some of the stickers are so small that having a small pair of tweezers would have been helpful to place them.

The museum showcased their history by displaying their past motorcycle, car and aircraft engine designs.

Some of their brands like the BMW 328 still exists today, but there is little resemblance in the historic version of it.

They’ve made so many cars that they have a giant display of all the logos.

One of their concept cars was displayed too. The idea was that each fin on the car could orient itself depending on whether the car wanted to accelerate or decelerate.

Another concept car was the BMW GINA. There isn’t a lot of information about this car. I guess it stayed as a concept car.

The museum also had a bonus exhibit for Rolls Royce, which is one of BMW’s child companies.  Not really a car I’d buy, but it would still be pretty sweet to own one.

The BMW Museum was pretty interesting and I wish I had booked the factory tour ahead of time.  Apparently I was supposed to book the factory tour a few weeks in advance in order to get a spot.  That would have made the visit to the museum even better.

People describe Stuttgart as the cradle of the automobile because of the invention of the automobile in this city. Many people also consider the city as the origin of the automotive industry. Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Maybach all produce their cars here in Stuttgart. Even automotive parts giant Robert Bosch Gmbh set up their headquarters in the region. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche both opened a museum in Stuttgart to show off all the cars they designed over the years. In January, I went to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, and yesterday, I visited the Porsche Museum.

The Porsche Museum differs from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in the way that Porsche displayed their sports cars and racing cars more than their other cars. The Porsche Museum is also smaller than the Benz Museum and contains less cars. I thought the cars that the Benz Museum displayed seemed much more interesting, but that has to do with my interest their pre 1950’s cars more than the new Porsche sports cars. One thing I thought was very cool about the Porsche Museum was that they had a car that everyone could sit in. I can’t think of any other time where I’d be able to sit in a Porsche! As usual, I take lots of pictures whenever I go places, but unfortunately, I left my SD card at home, so I had to take all the pictures with my phone camera.

Today, I was able to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum, and this place was totally worth going.  This museum has to be a must-see for any tourists going to Stuttgart.  It presents a history of the company and features many cars that the company has designed and built over the years.  I took a lot of pictures, and have uploaded them all! The quality of the cars here are just fantastic.  Although a lot of the originals no longer exist, the replicas still look very good.  I had no idea that there was so much history here. 

The history begins at the invention of the internal combustion engine by Nikolaus Otto, and the subsequent invention of the automobile by Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, and Wilhelm Maybach to the modern day automobiles.  The museum features all kinds of cars, from luxury cars, public transportation vehicles, and emergency vehicles.
