<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visiting Vienna during the Christmas season offers a blend of history with festive markets. The city transforms into a hub of holiday activity, with several Christmas markets scattered across historic sites, each filled with seasonal goods, food, and glühwein. This trip also brought encounters with Vienna&#8217;s imperial past through its museums and palaces.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Christmas Markets and Festive Atmosphere</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vienna transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, with Christmas markets dotting the city landscape. We explored markets at various iconic locations such as St. Stephen&#8217;s Cathedral, Rathausplatz (City Hall), Schloss Schönbrunn, and Schloss Belvedere. Each market featured rows of wooden stalls selling ornaments, handcrafted gifts, and warm seasonal drinks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxGdbxQ-AqUcknGad4LP5GxUpfpgQS4JoQ5j6DDMncSDS47bei42N7_IsM5-Eu0A/photo/AF1QipNA0c2XiyJH2b-eLORDrkVMm1sdPo7XYakJz6gs?key=aFNILUdzTDZaRFFGbGVrYTlfMlo0NjlGWkMtTl9R" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczP7N-II7-iQlv82kmxQLkyhw2lXnYk0jWOjWRE7GR8I33BoIPtNcOcEzeqRdM5yXLi9gm7WEaxkDe7Dci0ZpQPChgnkYyo7IiuozoqiB4HlkGe3ojm1rzxVNE1byp_U6ped_aitlCXsGn2YfEHWZ0s1PQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The markets feature countless stalls serving Glühwein (mulled wine) in decorative mugs, which visitors can keep as souvenirs for a €5 deposit. The hot drinks were perfect for when walking around in the cold. There&#8217;s also food like Kaiserschmarrn (like a fluffy shredded pancake with sugar and jam), hot dogs, and chimney cakes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxGdbxQ-AqUcknGad4LP5GxUpfpgQS4JoQ5j6DDMncSDS47bei42N7_IsM5-Eu0A/photo/AF1QipP4HDovBo1CyZod_R_9KVXY1pQ1GhED0oE01OLJ?key=aFNILUdzTDZaRFFGbGVrYTlfMlo0NjlGWkMtTl9R" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMquKRPBiklxbUQ1tfHDWU_o26BVeYso2vOiGZSvIllLRscBkQsrMOWTem6g4wuL8axPzXg7jcbJQ9TFVLpIYc6L31IpQn7QzkfOjpPIQUhX3xTLpshY23LcOJyLF90LFKE_VnnnFmvJ5JKkeNFwJHrmA=w1560-h877-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While many stalls offer Christmas merchandise, we discovered that most vendors source similar items (likely outsourced). However, we learned of an artisanal market featuring exclusively local craftwork, though we weren&#8217;t able to visit it during our stay.</p>

<div class="wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We heard about a market that exclusively sold locally made items, though unfortunately, we missed the chance to visit it. Another notable scene was the line of people outside Stephansdom, awaiting Christmas mass, reflecting the importance of the cathedral in Vienna&#8217;s holiday traditions. Despite this, the atmosphere remained lively</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Museums and Palaces</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vienna is known for its rich collection of museums and palaces. Among the highlights of our visit was the Albertina, though art museums are not my usual preference. A more engaging stop was the Schmetterlinghaus, the butterfly house, located near the Hofburg Palace. This greenhouse contained numerous butterfly species that fluttered among tropical plants, including banana trees. The butterflies flew around at their leisure. Some would land on the leaves, or even on the walking path, so we had to be careful as we walked.</p>

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOxGdbxQ-AqUcknGad4LP5GxUpfpgQS4JoQ5j6DDMncSDS47bei42N7_IsM5-Eu0A/photo/AF1QipOM83LV6jzVKDLThhzJsjSl-AcdNR8Rl3-LP9Ke?key=aFNILUdzTDZaRFFGbGVrYTlfMlo0NjlGWkMtTl9R" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOqaJjhIvOfEzFcFEQLROnABc6l69KJFrsUnxSyoiZePK_nwhDyeCswOIbqk3875Ng7Th_ClVvyWtf4VoithdSm69nnXY72D4ZhpjuFWKrUkZ98-wHN9omGDaA4qy3OlUbacY3RQVBwiC0g7V5SU4sNoA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>
</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the more memorable moments was witnessing a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis. However, the warmth inside contrasted sharply with the cold winter air outside, making heavy winter clothing less comfortable during the visit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Schatzkammer, Vienna&#8217;s imperial treasury, presented a vast collection of jewellery and regalia from the Habsburg era. The treasury holds significant historical pieces, including the Imperial Crown of Austria and the Royal Scepter, reflecting the power and influence the Habsburg dynasty once held. The collection includes the largest emeralds in the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Schloss Schönbrunn (a UNESCO World Heritage site), we took a guided tour through Maria Theresa&#8217;s private quarters, which are only accessible with a guide. Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions, was a pivotal figure in European history, known for modernizing the empire and her diplomatic maneuvers, including the marriage of her daughter Marie Antoinette (one of her 16 children) to Louis XVI of France. Schönbrunn, often likened to Versailles, served as a summer residence for the Habsburgs and features intricate Rococo interiors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Kapuzinergruft, the Imperial Crypt, provided a sobering experience as we explored the tombs of the Habsburg family, including those of Franz Joseph I and Maria Theresa. Franz Joseph, who reigned for nearly 68 years, oversaw significant political changes in Europe. The crypt narrates the legacy of the Habsburgs, a family that ruled Austria and much of Europe for centuries.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Culinary Experiences</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vienna&#8217;s culinary scene combines traditional Austrian dishes with influences from neighbouring regions. We sampled Flammkuchen, a thin flatbread from the Alsace region topped with crème fraîche instead of tomato sauce. The local Schweinsbraten (roasted pork) came served with Knödel (potato dumplings). This hearty dish involves slow-roasting marinated pork until tender, and the dumplings soak up the rich gravy, creating a filling and comforting plate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wiener Schnitzel, one of Austria&#8217;s most famous dishes, did not particularly stand out to me. I found the Japanese variation, tonkatsu, to be more enjoyable.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Flight Home in Comfort</h1>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The return flight offered a chance to experience business class. Upon boarding, sparkling wine was served, and throughout the flight, options for higher-quality food and drinks were available, including steak, cheese plates, smoked salmon, and Johnnie Walker Black. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We landed late in the day in Auckland, and at that time many restaurants were already closed. We managed to get to <a href="https://beastandbutterflies.co.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beast &amp; Butterflies</a> fifteen minutes before the kitchen closed. We indulged in two standout dishes: the first was a lamb rump from Hawke&#8217;s Bay, a region in the North Island famous for its quality meats, and the second was a whole yellow belly flounder, a fish native to New Zealand waters. The lamb was cooked to perfection and was accompanied by sweet mini peppers, and briny olives. The flounder had a satisfying char on the exterior and was dressed with confit lemon, adding a subtle citrus note, and scattered with capers and parsley for bursts of salt and freshness.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After our <a href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2024/08/05/new-zealands-natural-wonders-caves-and-geysers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">countryside adventures</a>, we returned to Auckland for the final leg of our trip. By the time we arrived, dusk had already settled over the city. A thick blanket of fog obscured much of the harbour. The true culinary gem of our Auckland experience was <a href="https://ahirestaurant.co.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ahi</a>, a restaurant that takes pride in sourcing ingredients from across New Zealand. The menu even lists the local origin of the main component for each dish.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each dish showcased a different region of the country. We began with a unique appetizer from the Hunter Hills in the South Island: wallaby tartare served on a chip made from puffed wagyu beef tendon. Tartare, being a preparation of finely chopped raw meat, offers a pure, unadulterated taste of the protein. In this case, the wallaby tartare presented a lean, mild gamey flavour profile with a subtle sweetness. As for the crispy chip underneath, while it was good, I wouldn&#8217;t have known it was a wagyu beef tendon without being told.</p>

Both cities build their downtowns (or CBD, central business district as it&#8217;s called in Australia) next to the ocean with iconic landmarks next to them (i.e. the Harbour Bridge vs Lions Gate Bridge, and Opera House vs Canada Place, Botanic Garden vs Stanley Park). In many ways, it feels like being in Canada but with better weather. My first stop was the Circular Quay. This is the place people think of as the stereotypical Sydney.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Circular Quay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Sydney Opera House, with its distinctive sail-like design, is not just an architectural marvel but also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Completed in 1973, this masterpiece by Danish architect Jørn Utzon has become synonymous with Sydney&#8217;s skyline. Its unique expressionist modern design features a series of precast concrete &#8220;shells&#8221; that form the roof structure, creating a striking silhouette against the harbour waters.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipNvLmrC45QStHQlnv3QXpp2pSxxop1IzJxaFgC8?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczNJ0U4wXzipDIQkBc_NCpxFYzMenYTMiy5YL1DgbbYPKIc6Uw2R0b212soBXcCHr3GuM6wgd302Yu1oapmhGCenYO2eesIWv174NWhJK6BkADKr6AuqDNMbcN8v84LBH7Bd0hU-7bfarMmffLSYeLBM9A=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Adjacent to the Opera House stands the equally impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge. This steel bridge opened in 1932 and remains the world&#8217;s largest steel arch bridge. There is a tourist attraction there where people can walk along the arch of the steel beams (people are tethered for safety).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipP_bXBHPdDsQVYU8UUrE2EDlmrxA67wg4KXPG_I?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPEe4bbI0DpVl1hbW6SxOMklUpztUHqKA19LwDTikTWQfNjsgmfFD8iOChCgTKQz59Vw_j_LXuGLT9rkD_IkdfvuWV2ptGAxahh_izMoHYPRCOvwJZN3F06CbkjUJoPjCpF884Sy1KtzCjurjbHHVQLng=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Souvenir shops lined the waterfront selling stereotypical Australian souvenirs like kangaroo and koala plushies. They also sell a lot of hats, which I recalled that those are also very stereotypically Australian thanks to people like Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Royal Botanic Garden</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Established in 1816, this green oasis in the heart of Sydney is Australia&#8217;s oldest scientific institution. The gardens showcase a diverse collection of native and exotic plants, especially ones that are not present where I live. One of the standout flora was the Bird of Paradise plant, native to South Africa but thriving in Sydney&#8217;s climate. Its vibrant orange and blue flowers, resembles an exotic bird in flight.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipOIzWwutc6XyIHahLYZgCTa9Zs6IdaW_fIuSpo9?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczP5Ptr8ID-MzhxPa6R3F7kZOCRwaNnAJQfw6I6J-AfWufuziNafXz9fhId1wGnvcfGUTjWmGvDtqwDvqM5_Jsf-KkdwoQBo_UPlbBS2OiqMwe6fEJk6vCa1UcX5BEQcVuobI68qxfb7E7RHiga7K_Z-TQ=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I also encountered a variety of birds that I don&#8217;t usually see (I&#8217;m told some of them are garbage birds though). One amusing incident involved birds in the trees nearly missing some oblivious bystanders with their droppings (and oblivious even after the fact).</p>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Royal Botanic Garden proved to be more than just a green space; it was a living museum of biodiversity, a sanctuary for urban wildlife, and a peaceful retreat from the city&#8217;s bustling energy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Barangaroo</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also took a walk through a nearby neighbourhood called Barangaroo. This area, named after an influential Aboriginal woman from the early colonial period, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a disused container terminal to a vibrant waterfront precinct with a mix of parklands, cultural spaces, and modern architecture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipMrdvub94IGVw8n4XP99ViiD1gFzoGn9wJx51MY?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczO04lfOYFUxVAmMSD8UXCUa8EkA_ta-ZUYZajqaEf4O0jjr_k484_vWiNB8Q33GafVJLl7GNafDumm1Gdpx410BzNEDEOUjhLcvjnSDR2JO7sGSIBIL1u1C0KUMsSp2mdGDSrm2Hi1YOusdtEsf9iQ9eA=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Walking through Barangaroo, with its urban renewal, reminded me of strolling through Yaletown and Olympic Village in Vancouver, offering harbour views and an urban atmosphere.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Manly Beach</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People also associate beaches with Australia. Close by to Sydney is Manly Beach. This popular stretch of golden sand is renowned for its excellent surfing conditions and laid-back atmosphere, and it also has an amusing name. According to Capt. Arthur Phillip, who named the beach, wrote of the indigenous people living there, &#8220;their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipNOM3emWKFRYstmKdQ-nu42Vyyg6BXb7nlwxXRp?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPdgN0JIHx-pT2YhdLJ0Q6xdPiDJ6PZ3qpAt9FXrlilM2tvJoojj5umcxOhCIdmEWZP2dq2_ZXfvkEEyYVa0P_7wEMXkrtxI_CNLfl8UQzFpwINv0Jy0yPBuCkvCTraa3_e73qKccF9nBQDsvTzzKAWdw=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Birds also hang out in the nearby trees, chirping so loudly, they sounded like bats. It almost makes it scary to even approach the tree even though I know they&#8217;re just birds.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Manly Beach encapsulates the quintessential Australian beach culture &#8211; a perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and relaxed coastal living.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Culinary Adventures</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sydney&#8217;s culinary scene proved to be quite delightful and exotic. In the spirit of trying local specialities, I sampled grilled kangaroo at <a href="https://themeatandwineco.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Meat and Wine Co</a>. This lean meat, similar in texture to beef, offered a milder flavour with a subtle gamey note. It&#8217;s a unique protein that reflects Australia&#8217;s distinctive fauna and culinary traditions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipO3UbZITQDRi7L-vcpK0SaQYsAwkTn8i7bfMdRi?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOzGJZu2U9hL1NMkBSpTPZVQj0D3MaWUan8SnzClty13QG7uJgbqGexqgMZdSfqOmvh_FDP3u3vaurUhMDZmDtUxJoEvOLB06Qk7z-3fRVr54zaZcW9Axkeza5c3gCRlgMH7ZQLPzgn0IRLeRfPy4XZrg=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another local delicacy at The Meat and Wine Co I had the pleasure of tasting was barramundi, also known as Asian sea bass. This white-fleshed fish is prized for its sweet, buttery flavour and firm, moist texture. When cooked, barramundi offers a delicate taste that&#8217;s less &#8220;fishy&#8221; than many other species.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipNE4B2fDvQPk166mqSD-kZq4Qft1lbEPsO6GZ6p?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOGO8u3I7HG-KjI3LbFNhwYMWT6sbWWLsoR-J1PEOVBIX59ZiqgbhChmT4WliSUJgy_3GIRkOB83zGej9EYVpg_HlC9AIkib2BrGUmIWwKZhAeK5yHPvmycSI7Tdw9kHowT88Wmha1B-g6UzD4wXeXuLw=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dinner with friends I know in Sydney at <a href="https://merivale.com/venues/bar-tottis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bar Totti&#8217;s</a> was another culinary delight. This pasta place came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. Luckily, we had a reservation because by the time we arrived, there was a crowd of people waiting at the door. This trendy eatery has earned a reputation for its exceptional pasta dishes cooked al dente with flavourful sauces that complement rather than overwhelm the pasta itself. It&#8217;s also renowned for its baked bread, a signature item on their menu. The bread is served fresh out of the oven, airy and fluffy on the inside with a perfectly crisp crust. It&#8217;s also accompanied by a variety of dips and spreads.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I also found myself developing a newfound appreciation for salads, discovering that they can be far more than just a boring mix of greens. The city&#8217;s cafes showcased salads bursting with variety – multiple types of leafy greens, complex carbohydrates, diverse proteins, and flavourful dressings that elevated the humble salad to a satisfying meal.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMLRvouMpAj561I81zfjb1TGH9KH0J58_54zvx3no0spO8eS2O4xqPGiETTWuql1A/photo/AF1QipObAhbfSq1U-Y4lIspAa0AknKhJ0DB-gv1aLFX1?key=RWZWVnhySC12dUgtaGZDcXdvZXF3X0g0UU9NYkZn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPI6XtXjddnUZayd-BXaMvIjgn82J-xl_9W_KWgpBnuoABcEjav7mpKSxaWd8ZMFYks2LoZhI-6T8nkFGBL4Vy2OUtcXit1zVrE7ddyrWTyAjyEE-3q1cBIxdQYXXzAVXNK1nbOp4Ufy24tj8VR7EOKrQ=w1924-h1082-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overall, I was quite impressed by Sydney&#8217;s food scene.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We started the day in a sleepy town we couldn&#8217;t pronounce, Arles. It&#8217;s mostly known for its rich history as part of the Roman Empire. It&#8217;s main attraction is the Arles ampitheatre. The night before, we had walked by it with our bags walking to the AirBnB, but in the morning, we could see it in all its glory. It was built in 90 AD and still stands to this day. Back then, when Arles played an important role in the Roman Empire, the stadium drew massive crowds, but nowadays, Arles&#8217; prominence is not what it once was and now the ampitheatre hosts local events. However, one local event in particular is the Feria d&#8217;Arles, a bullfighting festival. It&#8217;s hosted in mid September and we saw people posting signs for it &#8211; apparently we just missed it by a couple of days.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the Roman times, the main rival of Arles was Marseille as a port town. Back then, the town was closer to the Mediterranean and the Romans built a series of canals to the sea, but over the centuries, the silt flowing from the river has buried the former harbour. Marseille is the bigger city today, but in that time, Arles was of considerable importance to the Romans. The leaders of Arles sided with Julius Caesar in his war against Pompey. Once Julius Caesar won and consolidated power, Marseille&#8217;s possessions were transferred to Arles. The city went into decline during the barbarian invasions that led to the fall of Rome.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For breakfast, again we found that the French, at least in this part of the country, don&#8217;t open any of their restaurants until noon. Even the places that are open, only serve drinks. This often left us hungry from morning till noon. At least for lunch, we went to La Gueule du Loup (literally translates to the Mouth of the Wolf). There we got to try a bull steak and a bull tataki (maybe a reference to the bullfighting event). Apart from the bull meat, the steak itself is prepared the standard way with a red wine sauce. Upon ordering the steak, I realized I didn&#8217;t know how to say rare in French, but the server was nice enough to explain it to me &#8211; &#8220;saignant&#8221; (the same server later also taught us how to pronounce Arles, like &#8220;arrrl&#8221;). The tataki was much more special &#8211; a blue rare bull steak with a miso/sesame sauce, mushrooms, and a black rice risotto topped with truffle oil (tataki is a Japanese culinary term, but the only thing Japanese about the dish was the use of miso and sesame). The black rice is grown locally in the region of Camargue, that Arles is a part of. They even brew beer with the rice, but the taste isn&#8217;t too different from other types of lagers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After lunch, we headed over to Avignon, which used to be the seat of the Catholic church (as opposed to the Vatican) for 7 successive popes in the 14th century. Eventually, there was a dispute resulting both Avignon and Rome both declaring their own line of popes and for a time the papal succession had branched. The line of popes from Avignon were subsequently declared as illegitimate &#8220;antipopes&#8221; (but we like to say &#8220;bastard popes&#8221; for fun). The last antipope eventually agreed to relinquish the title and became a bishop. The popes resided in the Palais des Papes. The palace itself was both a fortress and a residence for the Avignon popes. The walls were intentionally very thick to withstand long sieges &#8211; to add on to that, the city has its own walls too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The inside of the palace explains the long history of the Avignon Papacy along with different rooms in the palace. Like European history in general, it&#8217;s pretty tough to follow because there are so many interconnected people and events happening concurrently.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once we crossed the border back into Israel, we headed for the Dead Sea, a lake with so much salt content that it&#8217;s practically impossible to sink, and we ended the day in Tel Aviv, a large, populous city on the Mediterranean coast.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Dead Sea</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s known as the Dead Sea because there isn&#8217;t any macroscopic aquatic life in the lake due to the high levels of salt in the water. The high levels of salt make it super easy to float in the water &#8211; it&#8217;s literally impossible to sink. It was kind of tough to hang out in the water though &#8211; February is not a good time of year for lounging in the water.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOHHb6kH0Vk4NSm5N4qMfk7PVelN1EqnxtB6anys0Tc22yAsO0LT7MytR7rENKq6A/photo/AF1QipOXbOaX6E5u8OQeaAL4NRXI6uWrQwqSjE5-34Co?key=bm4wM3NtV1B4ODFoM3hyRGVBSmd2WlpIeUMxTElB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bGxCUSZ53OBJWa4677iAMBtFfTCp-pBcAAhcjDC6E1VnTUQMX4ihML77YNaawATiQ-fqAZsVR93tL0sF2iZfw38mCB6qwQooI3MGsgqSfroi1PAPdjwzm9oygvaU_D6w3YknIGEtom5wr7pXK9C9X-8yrIgbm57pzGauA_AEgemafHbywQgXx97IurPEUBzuCfq6JHkY9qZQmrM8OIwetQ54rdo4vaYahV4GjtY7drEh2u3HAEwZbpVAByCDiXOouSeSFiCvw6caNPnOXX8u6wQuI8hW2T4KTyf58XRB70_lX6S8F8Ewjfp1rMw4lyZj8pJBRoxtAOoabNMJ2wP-afss4PtyjCCU_5ihrnb0z7fLExWIRg36Efp26rmi0gdx2vsKkwPuMYoS_vFISGQlVIDXIagUXuFlRY7eRjs-4s3xW1NXgWRuJGmUyDkLLmGP2rtrlILPSsPrrnfzdTFRAjfRvTVFGORC-S3uaWschwpzxmIgjPwT5Ta3YUShcRR6z7Z-DaTPVB_vObc5t7nDZsYm0aI7Pq3m-QVVdIet_WRzR5EOR4RCQo04mNtPo7hIBnx3Jbof9qLMkaagLJ9YcVXV8IFfmX_UqITLFlsMiBul6IBHkaDcbFkvEZa5e9EzVgXIa2bFCABUQtHrPJabt2U7F8Vk9IRlIyaX3e9C97wBFii4ujX0uDyBzK4NNVfl8BLww00yVeWxruFGCPggMy_25tSRQs2K6p0cMiXvUSnj20qkumhqm-Co=w1436-h808-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Dead Sea is located between Israel, Jordan and the West Bank. Theoretically, one could swim from one side to the other without worrying about drowning, but it is a lengthy 15km swim. Not something I&#8217;d try, and besides, there&#8217;s probably patrols that would stop people from doing that.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The mud here supposedly has health benefits because it has an abundance of certain minerals. We saw people spread the mud all over themselves to reap the benefits of the mud. I tried a little bit on my hands and arms, but the mud just dried out my skin a lot &#8211; yeah not doing that again&#8230;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And of course, there&#8217;s hummus! It&#8217;s savoury dish made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with other aromatics. The place we went to advertised itself as &#8220;the second best hummus in Tel Aviv&#8221;. So&#8230; what&#8217;s the first best hummus in Tel Aviv? I still don&#8217;t know the answer, but maybe it&#8217;s the one that&#8217;s homemade in a local&#8217;s home? This is literally the best hummus I&#8217;ve ever had, and I&#8217;ll compare all the hummus I eat in the future to this one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s pretty much it for Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea &#8211; and our two-week trip! We headed to the airport three hours early (Ben Gurion Airport is notorious for having really strict security). There were multiple checkpoints and at one point, a member of the airport security staff asked us to follow him and as we walked he asked us some questions and let us go. The staff checked every nook and cranny of our bags and all of the electronics we had on us before letting us go. From there, we began our journey home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Jerash in the north of Jordan, we made our down all the way down south to Petra. Petra is the most visited attraction in Jordan is the main reason why people want to go to Petra in the first place. The first time I saw it was when I watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as a kid, and at the time, I didn&#8217;t even think about it too much &#8211; I didn&#8217;t even know it was called Petra until years later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always thought that Petra was just a single structure &#8211; the same one that gets shown everywhere, but that structure is just The Treasury that&#8217;s a part of an entire city built in the rocks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOPGlVy0NaXBBCSIKbI6m89NY_t-lkdZS3RUnDSJNVt2yYDnofM9g1Ltvz3TaS_J26ShCxA5WJwv_omA6uMbkxl1EIMfkqkRBPuPR1efyVxWxH5KtXRPbBtiY-OCQNQqAmepGuhSJ9NeP8RyMNGlcPl6A=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the entrance, we walked 30 minutes through a winding gorge formed by a fault line that tectonic forces split apart until we reached The Treasury. Stray dogs followed us every step of the way hoping for scraps of food. Leaving at 6:00 didn&#8217;t help because the only people that the dogs could beg from was us.</p>

</div>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We arrived so early we were practically the only people there. We admired Petra on our own without the large crowds of tourists everywhere. We took our time walking up to it, all around it, up the slope to get a better view (nobody is allowed inside it though). We did all of this before the crowds showed up.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipPngPYecWRYSTWj0zuFuYUUHI5cJ8PfA1_TSb39?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczMyZlmv_36huADNt3QJrQGvbUlLB_vim6L0jJTnAXi4i4gSg-SLNMMZHCWCu7_mP5O744jo9eM033CbE4ptKTyqwIH45BH6nNrF0PVnWWGif_cC5tOO-GFrpZfUYM-57XMZOU4l70wFhfWPE3cYFUY_PQ=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Petra was the capital of a kingdom of the Nabataean, a group of nomadic Arabs who established the city as a major trading hub. The Nabataeans constructed massive structures by carving it all out of the sandstone. Although it&#8217;s called The Treasury, the building is believed to have been the mausoleum of the Nabataean King Aretas IV.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area around Petra is also home to the Bedouin people, a group of nomadic Arab people who inhabit the desert regions in northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In the modern times, many have abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and many Bedouin around Petra work as tour guides, offer camel rides, among other things. One of the Bedouin people there is actually the descendent of a woman from New Zealand who married a Bedouin man and wrote about it, called Married to a Bedouin.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipM4dy-b2gwWj_KnozSyYPgQqE9nkT9KuyX5C_b5?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczPRA4x_-vFKvFtfAKA9hGoXLMJmIU8iRFsSSz4tR6QXcEk97FhTCKANAfr_MQdtFyeHHFgWAhdH8rUJjjORagaoaJgrBJ0MTX1rTUF_yOh5hdyk21Yn8EoP-YBCkInKcAJlcFQkDiybuMopFwlq-QpPqA=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The area is over 250 square kilometers, something I totally didn&#8217;t expect (because I totally did not do my research before I went). I&#8217;m not too big on hiking and I was totally not prepared for a hike that day &#8211; I would have totally brought more water, and more food along with me that day. Despite that, I hiked up the 900 or so steps to the monastery anyway, while getting hassled by vendors trying to sell me their junk. Temperature-wise, the temperature shot up to a whopping 20 degrees Celsius from the 0 degrees Celsius just two days before. My body did not like that.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We spent about 8 hours in Petra, walking along the rock faces, seeing the ancient ruins, hiking up the hill, but if I had more energy I totally would have hiked up the other trials for even better views of the area.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMOvho7wNkG0_7O5mD6v8xHmDRNQHhawjpfTmeYIlN88FuPXADQGrZC5-dMe8G6gA/photo/AF1QipPXfF3hhmGaObiG6X1t6JiMVZ5Eqb6HDlCG0d-J?key=eUwyaHVCOWpVZG44eEFWLXh3X1YzY0VXbDQ0dzhn" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/AP1GczOvM8w4yrXYL4D2fILr3NwZmFlMNZos8-uPTNVvqWuiXTqXKNe3wr6GWWFDS92poaByJca4AQ-lOWJ9miJhsEYvJdQRLlDdNzJUapQvvTWKL4VTTOznkfxMacQ6jgdY15VhL5ffOenkqfKQy8Q9cmI43w=w1634-h919-s-no?authuser=0" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For dinner we had mansaf, probably the national dish of Jordan. It&#8217;s a delicious dish made with lamb and rice dish mixed with a yogurt sauce! This tasted even better than the chicken rice dish we had the day before. I had no idea that lamb and yogurt was such a great combination. It was a great meal to refuel after such a long day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Elephant Mountain in Taipei is a popular place to get a night view of Taipei. It&#8217;s only a short hike (albeit uphill) from Xiangshan station. Once the incline starts, it&#8217;s essentially a continuous flight of stairs until the viewpoint. There&#8217;s more to the hike than just the viewpoint, but most people end their hike at the viewpoint since they&#8217;re only there for the view anyways. The hike isn&#8217;t particularly strenuous, but it REALLY helps to bring water because Taiwan is hot and humid, which makes people sweat much more.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOoV8n1nYkJUnDyL3bK3FQrV-ynFqV2pcXmnvrsEn2gPtBjs3rhYhwtoN7ldPDmWA/photo/AF1QipNtrteisjqZmS2PXtxl8SdfFSSWeFA6AQ2p4tc0?key=QS1UTzE1UThyVWVBOTZwcVI1WDNUamdDbkMzakJ3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8mAyDbNW2FZOHD3HLsbl38WvmGg7_7AgwQWG3kcv8has7GkLBVp2rDOt1LAOe6WUMjZDwRN0k3XdMoFl6Nm6ECRhxwrzg2eHIUe6JXj8CLI6mZE0LEA4qT_UsmSbssTUxNAQzqon4vAlBVDPAUHZHZnY1UrnXmuOJa3eQiu-ak25Du23tZZfb4Hab3Rhy66EottRiqEFnUd-ip_-bMP5uMWZS4OK2aHpjAcSaH5y-FAkUwuyQsOq8VirMkObYcUWpSVXke2YftR4ZF_bCnnKg313ObvTMUeObre9LYhrijGOrXnVPMrKPqlih2_KXxadi4lPZ2Q9ZqBzusqFgWlAOcs8lhOxhgmojMZBEcZvg5YsosCvwb3jp0J2xtFXJYQNDZhO73eB6Pvi_gn-iKs69VeCQn1FjcoyuBKcD5aOQOV6sSZkDNnRu4hSPlFgbP_i6uERcGN0Kz1YzwDREEfk1upWbJui8PEVRzxRxbxnCT4XWP_uNt6wU97DAd8muMws8AWoFofDDHVTsviWjxU7xY3BSdZ95tCcPPXnJuYatOVxHfC7sAvjZeqpFyfqZBaDhakbz9lR_ELAwJ3Bd6J8AyLhrk2QlbcnbrOLtzGyZsPahD-pLaWqgfklsW3TyXYXr4urZ-quJgFAhc4hSguotp0GBpDF3p-dvEYtzjjqnKqNjM944Qv5TFlyleJ9iDferw0sHYO1axQax5nDuv7iBsHRCeP9sDJMJnT_c2QVww3jDSiw=w1464-h824-no" alt=""/></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even from the trailhead one can see Taipei 101 in all its glory. I never did make it up to the observation deck of Taipei 101 though &#8211; I&#8217;m not one to particularly enjoy those kind of sights. The thing that did pique my interest about the Taipei 101 though is its counterbalance &#8211; its system of minimizing vibrations (e.g. from wind), only because I learned about them in university.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After the hike, my appetite was so good I ate two full meals one after another. A friend told me to try this turkey rice from a stall at the Taipei 101 (apparently it&#8217;s a thing), but to be honest, I didn&#8217;t enjoy it all that much. As I walked through the food court though, I saw a Liao Fan Hawker Chan &#8211; they&#8217;re famous in Singapore for soy sauce chicken. Despite having already eaten the turkey rice, I was determined to eat this too! I missed it a lot since I <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="went to Singapore (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2018/01/04/singapore/" target="_blank">went to Singapore</a> two years back.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The food coma hit me pretty hard though after those two meals, and that was a sign for me to go back to my AirBnB and rest up for the next day.</p>

When people talk about Taiwan, food is often one of the first things that is mentioned. <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Beef noodles</strong>: a
soup noodle with big chunks of half fatty and half lean beef in a beef

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Hot pot</strong>: it&#8217;s the idea of taking a pot of boiling water or soup and cooking meat and vegetables in it. Pretty much anything goes here: any kind of meat, vegetable, mushroom, etc.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Stir fried morning glory</strong>: not a vegetable that&#8217;s common in Canada/USA, but can be found in Asian supermarkets. It looks and feels like green onion with a slightly thicker skin, but tastes like spinach and has a nice crunch.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Szechuan style spicy wontons</strong>: the wonton is very similar to other kinds of wontons (ground pork and shrimp in a dough wrapper). In this case, it&#8217;s got a spicy, yet savoury sauce that slightly numbs the tongue.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings)</strong>: similar to a wonton as far as its filling goes (it can be pure pork, pure shrimp, or mixed) with a key difference in that it contains hot soup. They originated from Shanghai, but it&#8217;s made its way into mainstream Taiwanese cuisine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve already talked about the <a href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2019/06/02/eating-live-shrimp-in-chiang-mai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">live shrimp</a> and the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="bugs (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.henrypoon.com/blog/2019/06/03/eating-grasshoppers-and-crickets-in-chiang-mai/" target="_blank">bugs</a>, so this food post is going to have normal stuff.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first stop is a food market not far from where we stayed. The curry dish isn&#8217;t as spicy as it looks and is very flavourful. The beef noodles is pretty similar to pho, but with their Thai spin on it with the herbs that they use. I&#8217;d say it had a bit more umami than the typical pho. The Pad Thai I thought wasn&#8217;t as flavourful as I liked, and was actually kind of plain. The other two dishes are highly recommended though! </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOduKvEzUMAVNV5m87PwJUokWWm8ObgpJa8HWOM65a8kCWhdUDlo1NTxtobBHrb5w/photo/AF1QipNAUEhChwPNIHs2xPUoh4ELhtl1cFNZf2YVILtP?key=dTdzM080Y3I5blhCTXE0QlkzU2d4eFkxZkN5UXRR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/UpHOj4TvYEpV2Ur16x7EBuzKUoH598w4qVoQrYMEu01eqWEgkrVP2MAaq5ktlQNjrMFaJ9UFw91K-zLi0u-Q68-uvTBSCTgiYqXIgk5412pXVV8hW3Cjt1aEEq5e-BVafA7sm2fGDsnP-LKCoXuG0XhvIU8VvUPOXWSxmLBKscTVi_zleBEV7oPHeY5ZQmRkNA16qYckXl9ddFacRwyxP6jLaHSqWEhYcr0ifnPumfZQ8ryztfBdMybhnAq6EqYndgTVs5_c7B5OsdIQTZt8yPhnIqPxi9rM1eWskuK42kHNw7eiTrt6sYHBYIWE7F_k-b0fwGxgRZslWpai6vwUu4ah79tYE7Lv_64gsPi4hsPHR9l-PLpdflAh_WXqiERciquNCkrihFm4rdauzUJ22NTttJ4jrRG3QWutMkyqg12af-clhOkrQXDneoAXykfoWfZZlwys4yPL80p_REms106Z6Np2n134CU4fba-fY-ceQhLBvs-rS-sZLQzohWqwg5pH58M8bRCPkL6Q6NGNW2r9LbmnWtvTYtUKlvZxKh_iAN_LtVwFDXZAgm7F4AwmYUezciip1Va2aPQQA2V4Z-cBHS3mZH7ij-gNa2PvfbTvMt2D2HJ0JG9dVg1zxhrIppy2NhIMjT7pvGiqLbtYe6SMIX-2ot26WFyeRCA2qUD61NEx85KJ2G42YgZBc-ZF9EfwkZOwI7HkBfQJq3xMAjj-vg=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a><figcaption>Clockwise from top left: panang curry, pad thai, beef noodles<br> <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/UEaeswTuJGpKNCeDA" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">https://goo.gl/maps/UEaeswTuJGpKNCeDA</a> </figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As far as fruit smoothies go, the fruit seemed to be so much more flavourful. I know that with bananas they are harvested before they&#8217;re riped so they can last for a few weeks as they are transported, so it&#8217;s possible the same thing is happening with these fruits. But since these fruits are local, they get to fully ripen on the tree.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I also saw them add a little bit of salt to enhance the existing sweetness and acidity of the smoothies. It made it perfectly sweet, without being overpowering.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOduKvEzUMAVNV5m87PwJUokWWm8ObgpJa8HWOM65a8kCWhdUDlo1NTxtobBHrb5w/photo/AF1QipM8q1BjNvwXZCBZEdIW_4YERKDD3eUSAtUAl6pv?key=dTdzM080Y3I5blhCTXE0QlkzU2d4eFkxZkN5UXRR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NSBy6DCIst7aKltWN_rLCbaV5b_ZEx3jV-4yumomI79hqyYQwwD8mWdES_QDAajzUNccbDYv02mcwTT5iJ2mnNflAiMxHTo6bXcxVio26N9eENoO2dhJG2slMJq3e-F9dx_BfOspxGsOKReLf7yol_HJRUsjEkWgIotGLBlBKxlLwR6_QJdiddV2E0W5ohGhuPZo8fTTMwtbLankKk8GtBxNYD_K_hEJs0L41HFa-DsHZ-A7s_oR2CyNQ4MCs1D6agdZKoSpTieQUQHH0QGb3puPvWzC32VCMZNP5DrHx-Xh2dAZdx5Zbh6KzdR7me0n-1HNnrdCGLDeENsmgHkvpi-itgMw3mcnEHK4L12lsr7PK_fprkkay-8gIReSAyzyFAmEKF2TP6zrO8uODud0m4smhALwBgf-iGF-Mtn2VihVs503cGtJbJpc5UVSBMb_WuTa9fBQcqkIIt1S_FRAgxCNweLtmYgI5bQiGWzDCMGELc3DW2iCskiciEX_q1BdXUeDzLXof96gec6-VRUX2Wri8n7IhOVMMg-LhMEzT2Sk_mwKBUpTFO0VktKTacyO92Zp8_dILhBQW9A4IygG9-CjDF7ZFccVTfqcRxG_0sIWXIJzb0f6Lj-vx9dv-zAXhC62kIf8Mn7uC3S4Wx6Cy2QbX6UoFNKTqprlXpYt-0ROPFJagSlWDo6sUamZ-tRuxtzwLKU91u4VzeYMk_qit27exQ=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a><figcaption>From left to right: pineapple, mango, and honey queen orange</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next is probably the most famous dish in northern Thailand: Khao Soi. It&#8217;s a noodle dish with soft noodles in the soup and deep fried noodles on top. The soup itself can vary in spiciness, but is made of a curry-like sauce with meat, chilis, lime, and coconut milk.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main attraction about this dish for me is the spiciness of the soup. It isn&#8217;t just a big spicy attack on the senses, but rather it&#8217;s nuanced because it&#8217;s balanced by the coconut milk.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOduKvEzUMAVNV5m87PwJUokWWm8ObgpJa8HWOM65a8kCWhdUDlo1NTxtobBHrb5w/photo/AF1QipPbhVGFHcQu-s3Enpsyjbg9uKIH9LLb9sb_oN1K?key=dTdzM080Y3I5blhCTXE0QlkzU2d4eFkxZkN5UXRR" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4L0XLXIgDm3FcevSe5NJHC6c8SXrmlE94JwMsQrGk2VhJszZ9sv5lmlF6IS_jJdfgdLTGXn1DlR6-gL4A1lChaZTfPNU5FABtcef9wA4Ye7hCClTpJSgnJqU037b7-Gaz33od-OTXio1E48gJcaOwRNh3wFW0TiYjJmH94oS48Ro-p9woepJXEyjT5qdQMwxHVWc1w0QmgKQWu-J2tvlWRf0IZ8wgjoCI9OegoU8pIYS1vW5cz7ab6ku4DTnyFiwhHxExQIOD3-zG-lwr74v2e5DX4nrH0JPuIK0Kmsw21oON8zWlQGFVIkOVaI5KxLdO1HwlTalN1zj-1RsVvs712U1HyCE6ZW5aitJSXoGdoOpDMloRH-I1Sw4myVbszv1mz_n3yPzDdkvlJeVZMk-TeWbeuJkR8GiofROCreNx7qIHeEb6lSgyI9bZ37ZwsNa0E1HqPQk4un1U60LU2YV2tMhv4bL9uodY3Pj8NgCZcW5vEJNs-86Dtv0MTboMCao-CFbMctpdwSsO0rr0ZbP27k14urXN6zwtm-kIFwOXeExSMIFaFk8Rh1E0tR77JhNS4Gxh60tK3YdNcOgV8NJyoh0rRVeBRG6vgqUwoV6_yLkCBM74_r2eYOLONXgDNaRT0K-9EN-bJdzsn9Khpwbv4xVAdbAz55gjblOn_qSkOAv07ak4ZXRyCxRZSdp4zcAs39jvlAnkSWaTpnmmRM4TVcaDA=w1704-h959-no" alt=""/></a><figcaption><a href="https://goo.gl/maps/XSJwL5seVhNWdPRA9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">https://goo.gl/maps/XSJwL5seVhNWdPRA9</a></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last but not least, we had some tom yum, yellow curry, and morning glory. This place is an actual restaurant with western style ambience, so naturally there was a price premium to that.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s kind of difficult to comment on how the yellow curry and tom yum tasted because it was way too spicy for our senses. I definitely tasted the spiciness and sourness of the soup, but the spiciness overpowered me quickly. The best by far as the morning glory. I just really like leafy greens with crunchy stems. The chilis added gave it a slight zing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I managed to get a week off work and I spent it with some friends in Southeast Asia! The first destination: Chiang Mai, Thailand. One of the goals of the trip in general was to eat whatever we could find &#8211; anything different and exotic. Mainly exotic. We arrived at a nice water reservoir with restaurants by the beach.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And now for the dish we came here for&#8230;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Chiang Mai dancing shrimp" width="1280" height="720" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NOT3sZyZVzo?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the lid is opened, the shrimp immediately try to jump out, so the lid can&#8217;t be opened for very long. They&#8217;re hard to grab too because they keep wiggling. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They taste like eating small pieces of shrimp sashimi, but at the same time I had to chew through the shells. There&#8217;s a little bit of flavour from the spice and herbs that were added, but it&#8217;s subtle. We were given some chili sauce on the side to give it more flavour. The spicy sauce is what you&#8217;d expect from chilis and cilantro.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Shrimps are literally bugs" width="1280" height="720" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nKuU63ODjjY?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div><figcaption>The shrimp seem to move a bit erractically, so it&#8217;s possible there was some alcohol in the bowl as a part of the sauce</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have no idea how &#8220;clean&#8221; this dish was since it&#8217;s raw&#8230; I could only bring myself to eat a couple for fear of getting parasites or some other foodborne illness. My friends on the other hand were completely grossed out by this even though they initially wanted to eat it. To be fair, this is the first time I considered shrimps to be like bugs at all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My buddy made a video summarizing the entire experience. See below.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Otherwise, that&#8217;s it for eating live shrimp!<br>See all the photos <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)" href="https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOduKvEzUMAVNV5m87PwJUokWWm8ObgpJa8HWOM65a8kCWhdUDlo1NTxtobBHrb5w?key=dTdzM080Y3I5blhCTXE0QlkzU2d4eFkxZkN5UXRR" target="_blank">here</a></p>
