Even from the trailhead one can see Taipei 101 in all its glory. I never did make it up to the observation deck of Taipei 101 though – I’m not one to particularly enjoy those kind of sights. The thing that did pique my interest about the Taipei 101 though is its counterbalance – its system of minimizing vibrations (e.g. from wind), only because I learned about them in university.

After the hike, my appetite was so good I ate two full meals one after another. A friend told me to try this turkey rice from a stall at the Taipei 101 (apparently it’s a thing), but to be honest, I didn’t enjoy it all that much. As I walked through the food court though, I saw a Liao Fan Hawker Chan – they’re famous in Singapore for soy sauce chicken. Despite having already eaten the turkey rice, I was determined to eat this too! I missed it a lot since I went to Singapore two years back.

The food coma hit me pretty hard though after those two meals, and that was a sign for me to go back to my AirBnB and rest up for the next day.

For one reason or another, I never made it out to Saint Joseph’s Oratory the other times I visited. According to my cousin, “it’s one of the best free attractions in Montreal”.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory is Canada’s largest church, and it enshrines a statue of Saint Joseph within it, I wasn’t able to take a good photo myself of the the oratory in all its beauty, so here’s one from Wikipedia.

We weren’t allowed to go inside the main nave (where the people sit in church) of the basilica since it was closed for an event. But we were able to go to the Crypt Church on the floor below.

The statue of Saint Joseph is located in the Votive Chapel. People all over come here as a pilgrimage to pay their respects.

Since Saint Joseph’s Oratory is located on Mont Royal, there is a viewpoint nearby to look into the city.

A short hike from there was the Mount Royal Cross. The temperature was only slightly below freezing, so it wasn’t as cold as I expected Montreal to be. I was told that it’d get much much colder in January and February.

The next place we went to was Old Montreal. It was pretty dead, even for a Sunday afternoon. It makes sense since I’m way past the busy tourist season! In the summer, all the restaurants set up patio seating outside, but it was too cold to do any of that in November.

Lastly, I went to the Underground City. Like a lot of cities that get really cold, the city has built a network of underground tunnels so that people can avoid walking outside in the cold winter. Some parts of it are actually really nice!

One of the places I wanted to go on this trip was the Biodome, which tries to recreate different ecosystems in the world to display various plants and animals that live there. Unfortunately, it doesn’t reopen until summer 2019.

• The cost is the added time required to tweak to do the setup and customisation

After I chose to switch to the self-hosted installation, I faced the problem of having to migrate all of my content, site stats, and followers.  I also had to set up proper URL redirection to the new website.  Most of the guides I read did answer how to migrate content, and set up URL redirects, but it was not so clear as to how to migrate my site stats and followers.

Content Migration

Migrating Site Stats and Followers

Migrating site stats and followers requires installing the Jetpack addon and linking it to the WordPress.com account (so that the self-hosted WP and the existing WP blog are connected).  Afterward, a support thread has to be made on WordPress.com to ask WP staff to do the rest of the migration (there seems to be no other way).  I found the information on how to do this at this site: http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/161633/migrating-stats-from-wordpress-com-blog-to-self-hosted-wordpress-org-blog.  The post I made for my own site migration is here.

Setting Up URL Redirection

This part costs money unfortunately.  I paid ~$17 CAD for this so that my own URL would be redirected for the new one.  If redirection isn’t required, then there is no need to buy anything.  The setup is pretty straight forward.  After buying the redirect, it is just a matter of setting the destination WordPress site to go to.  Reference link here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

Since it was late September, we weren’t expecting any snow.  It wasn’t even cold for that matter.  We all met up on campus in the morning and off we went.  From there, it was about a 2.5 hour drive.  I would have stopped in Squamish to go to Tim Horton’s if I had known to take that exit.  We arrived at the UBC Whistler Lodge at around 11.  The lodge had a pool table and an arcade machine!  They didn’t have Tetris on the arcade machine though.  If they did, that would have been super awesome.

The lobby also featured nice First Nations artwork over top of the fireplace.

We spent about an hour and a bit with presentations from each of the sub teams (mechanical, electrical, and software) so everyone could get a little bit of an orientation about what everyone else was working on on the team.  This was helpful in that each sub team would not be working alone on their components anymore.  This promoted the very important idea of multi-disciplinary teamwork.

After the exploring, we decided to walk around to check out the scenery.

We spent the rest of the day socializing with one another and it helped us all get to know each other a little better.  It’s definitely better to know one’s teammates better in order to help team chemistry.  It definitely helped the team get a lot closer.

People took part in a variety of activities: Big 2, drunken poker, Apples to Apples, just chatting, among other things.  Pretty sure everyone had a good time.

We stayed for a day and a night at the lodge.  Before we left, we took a nice stroll in the Whistler Village. It was nice since there was not a lot of people during the off-season.

On the drive back, we stopped at some viewpoints to appreciate the scenery.

Once we left Whistler, the drive back became a lot more boring. I guess I was just in a hurry to head home then. I figured that was a long enough break (even though I only had less than a month of school), so I probably should take care of my actual priorities again…
